    It was very good, but a little disappointing.

    With a courtyard and chickens, the atmosphere is unique and soothing. From the hall to the Room, restaurant, and lounge, there’s a gentle scent of wood, stylish indirect lighting, and breakfast made with Nara-style ingredients served with great care. With the all-inclusive plan, you can enjoy as many delicious drinks and foods as you like. The Hotel location is also convenient—there was nothing to complain about. However, at night when there are fewer staff members on duty and the lights are dimmed further—when only a small number of guests are quietly having drinks—a group of three women turned the wonderful tatami space into something like an izakaya-style gossip session… Since they had been drinking, they talked nonstop at machine-gun speed about their home life, husbands, children, and local topics. I didn’t want to listen (and wasn’t trying to), but it was impossible not to hear everything. They laughed loudly over and over. I left my seat early, but their voices still carried… Even though such a beautiful lounge is provided, sprawling out on the floor in “private izakaya mode” was hard to tolerate. I believe most guests come here to get away from everyday chatter like this and enjoy something special. It’s fine if children get excited during the day with families around; however—as in any Hotel—groups that don’t match the atmosphere should understand that those who stay silent are often simply enduring it. The result is that considerate guests leave their seats while people without manners take over whichever seats they want. Would it be possible to make an announcement or display a notice when using the lounge—such as “Please refrain from conversations or loud laughter that may disturb other guests”—or have staff gently check in? Even when they weren’t sitting next to me, voices that intrude beyond personal space feel like poor manners in a Hotel. It felt such a waste for this space at “Setre Naramachi.” Other than that, all of the Hotel staff were extremely polite and kind. I would definitely like to stay again.

    An ideal location for sightseeing, with attentive service.

    Arriving drenched in sweat, I was able to take a breather right away in the lounge with the complimentary shaved ice service. It felt like the best kind of hospitality. The Room felt smaller than I expected, but everything was pleasantly well kept and I had a comfortable stay. Joining the morning walk was also worthwhile—I learned things for the first time thanks to the guide’s explanations, making it a meaningful experience. All of the staff were friendly and courteous. With Kofuku-ji Temple, Nara Park, and the station all nearby, it’s an ideal location for sightseeing, so I’d definitely like to stay here again when I visit Nara.

    I’m satisfied.

    Above all, the location is outstanding. Set on the shore of Sarusawa Pond with Kofuku-ji Temple right in front, you can also reach the Nara National Museum and Kasuga Taisha Shrine by strolling along the shaded approach through greenery. And since it’s in a corner of Naramachi, you won’t have any trouble finding places to eat nearby. The early-morning walk around Nara Park guided by a local volunteer guide was also a fun event. The Hotel features generous use of Yoshino cedar throughout both the exterior and interior, and the guest Room is filled with a soothing natural wood fragrance. Instructions for using the air conditioner and shower were placed in easy-to-find spots, so there was no confusion. Both the front desk staff and restaurant staff were consistently pleasant and welcoming, allowing me to relax throughout my stay. Breakfast included steamed Yamato traditional vegetables and meat served with eight different condiments, which made it enjoyable to vary the flavors. For guests on a Multiple Night Stay, they even offered thoughtful touches such as switching pork to beef, which I really appreciated. The chilled milk and fruit juice included in the all-inclusive plan were delicious as well. At dinner, the French course began with venison as an appetizer; I was surprised by how mild-tasting and tender it was—truly excellent. If I had one request: since lighting in the Room is somewhat dim, I would have liked a desk lamp or similar light for reading or writing. Also, because the sink basin is high and shallow, water tends to run down to my elbows every time I wash my face—this was my only minor concern.

    Recommended

    I didn’t expect to find such a great Hotel in such a convenient location. There’s a lounge where you can relax after sightseeing, local cuisine unique to the area, and many other features that make for a clean Room and a comfortable stay. The service was also excellent, and I had no stress at all. I’ll definitely consider staying here again the next time I visit Nara. Thank you!

    I used to love Setre, but now I don’t.

    This was my fourth stay. I’ve brought friends and family here before, but this time was very disappointing. One of Setre’s biggest attractions is the all-you-can-drink alcohol included with dinner. The meals were honestly a shock. I used to love the all-you-can-eat onigiri breakfast, but it has changed to steamed dishes in a bamboo steamer… It was the same in Himeji, so I wonder if this change has been made everywhere. Dinner also felt downgraded: what used to end with curry or somen now ended with bread; the fish and meat dishes felt less substantial; an appetizer that used to include flounder was only vegetables; and another dish that used to be shirako was replaced with mushrooms… (Photos 1 and 3 are from two years ago; photos 2 and 4 are from this visit.) I really felt the difference and was very disappointed. I’d like to bring friends again, so I hope things improve.

    A wonderful Hotel with warm, soothing comfort

    A wonderful Hotel with a warm wooden feel, perfectly located for strolling around Naramachi and just steps from Sarusawa Pond and Kofuku-ji Temple. There was a free drink bar available until morning, along with snacks and cheese, and I was surprised by how high the quality was. The bed in the Room was also very comfortable, so you can sleep soundly. In the garden were two adorable chickens, Kohaku-chan and Momiji-chan (Yamato chicken?). This time I stayed only one night, but next time I visit Nara I’d like to stay for more than one night. Thank you to all the staff for your outstanding hospitality.

    Slightly disappointing

    I love all-inclusive stays and have visited many places, but this was the first time I left feeling disappointed—maybe because my expectations were too high. It felt like there wasn’t much consideration for guests’ feelings... I didn’t really experience the benefits of an all-inclusive stay, and only disappointment remained. However, the drink pairing at dinner was excellent. The portions were on the smaller side, but everything was delicious, so I was satisfied with that. The staff were thoughtful in many ways and left a good impression. I think it could become a very good Hotel if things were considered more from the guest’s perspective rather than for self-satisfaction. The pet bird was adorable!

    Plenty of free content available

    A Hotel filled with the warmth of wood, located right in front of Sarusawa Pond in Nara. There are plenty of free amenities to enjoy, including a game & music lounge, an alcohol & light snacks lounge, a stargazing terrace, and a footbath. And believe it or not, chickens wander around the courtyard (lol). The guest rooms also have a terrace with a counter and are a lovely space with the same woody scent as the common areas. However, I did notice a few things: the toilet and bathtub are in the same space (though it’s not a cheap-looking unit bath like you’d find in a Business Hotel), the sofa table wobbles quite a bit, and there are no amenities such as toothbrushes (you’ll need to bring your own except for bath amenities). In the morning, you can join a free Nara morning walk led by volunteer guides. It starts at 7:00 AM, and there were quite a lot of participants—6 groups totaling 10 people. The places visited aren’t different from daytime sightseeing spots, but walking through Nara in the crisp morning air feels wonderful. Breakfast is served after the walk: three tiers of steamed dishes (seasonal colorful steamed vegetables; Yamato pork with steamed vegetables; ancient rice), Asuka sake lees soup, koji ponzu sauce, salt-koji soy milk sesame dressing, and stylish small plates of condiments (wasabi; soy sauce–koji mayonnaise; house-made green onion sauce; house-made herb salt; whole-grain mustard; Yamato tachibana pepper; shichimi spice blend; sesame). It’s packed with local ingredients and dishes—truly “Nara breakfast.” The steamed Yamato pork was especially delicious.

    New Year’s in Nara

    I stayed for one night on New Year’s Day. There is no on-site parking, but there is a coin-operated parking lot next door, which was convenient. Even though I was a bit worried because it was New Year’s Day, I was able to park without any problem.\n\nI left my luggage at the front desk and explored the city. The location is right in front of Sarusawa Pond, and you can even hear the bells from Kofuku-ji Temple. Deer come quite close as well—an excellent spot.\n\nThe food was very delicious, and you can also enjoy coffee and draft beer in the lounge. In the morning, I joined the city walking tour. Since I live in Kansai, I haven’t often had the chance to visit Nara as part of a tour, so hearing from the volunteer guide was truly worthwhile.\n\nThey kindly changed my breakfast to osechi (traditional New Year’s dishes), and when I couldn’t finish everything, they neatly packed it into a box for me to take home—thank you very much. The osechi was delicious. Because it was osechi there wasn’t a warm soup dish included, but when I requested one they added a bowl dish for me, which warmed me up.\n\nThe canelé was also excellent. Seeing how happily the staff were working had a positive effect on me too—it makes me feel like this year will be a good one.

    We had a great time.

    I stayed in December. This was my second stay, and since I couldn't fully enjoy the services during my first visit due to being unfamiliar with them, I was looking forward to this time. I was able to watch the sunset over Mount Ikoma from the stargazing terrace that I missed last time. The sunset view from the Room was also wonderful. The Hotel's convenient location allowed me to explore Naramachi and enjoy the historic city of Nara. Inside the Hotel, I enjoyed free drinks like plum wine and wine, along with snacks while relaxing in the courtyard watching chickens. This time, I stayed in a Room with a bath; the large bathtub helped me recover from walking around all day. For breakfast, it was rice balls last time, but this time it featured ancient grains and steamed dishes—perfect for warming up on a cold morning. There was even a canelé gift! I definitely want to stay again next time. Thank you very much to all the staff!

    I would love to visit again.

    We stayed as a couple and were very satisfied with everything, including the convenient access to tourist spots, the cleanliness of the Facility, and the meals. The all-inclusive plan was great as it covered alcohol during meals, snacks, and drinks. We will definitely visit again when we go to Nara.

    I stayed for two nights starting on my birthday. In the room, there was an origami "deer" and a hotel card. Upon closer look, it was a handwritten Birthday Card! The room had tatami mats, allowing me to relax without wearing slippers—a truly comforting space. On the last day, as I was returning to Kanto, I experienced severe migraines from midnight and continued to feel nauseous and vomit in the morning. I consulted with the staff, who responded with great kindness and care. Thanks to their support, I managed to return home safely. I regret not being able to properly express my gratitude before leaving. There are things I wanted to do on the last day that remain unfinished, so I hope to visit Nara again and stay at Setre Naramachi once more.

    I’ll be honest, but I will book again.

    At check-in, it was crowded, but the staff handled everything politely. Thank you very much. The room was very comfortable and well-designed. Having a sunken kotatsu was absolutely wonderful. As for the bath, since it was neither an Onsen nor a large public bath, I rated it lower; however, as it matched the expected facility, I am satisfied. I used the lounge on the first floor and unexpectedly enjoyed a barbecue service there—it made me happy and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also had dinner at the hotel. While I opted for sake pairing, I felt that focusing too much on Nara-produced options might have left out better pairings elsewhere. That said, dining in such a lovely atmosphere was delightful. I'm looking forward to seeing improvements next time. After dinner, spending time with the chickens in the courtyard brought me great comfort and relaxation. Although my comments may seem strict at times, this is one of the best hotels in Naramachi area in my opinion. I'm hopeful for further improvements in the future!

    A Hotel where you can be soothed by the sound of the Kofukuji Temple bell.

    I previously stayed at Setre in Maiko and enjoyed the homey atmosphere and relaxing time. Since Setre opened in Nara, I had been curious about it. This summer vacation, I stayed with my grandchildren and felt reassured as there were many families staying as well. The grandchildren were thrilled with the juice in the lounge and even more excited to see chickens in the courtyard! The room was clean and minimalistic, which felt refreshing. The building, made with plenty of wood, had a warm and welcoming feel to it. We only had breakfast at the hotel, but I found the adult menu somewhat disappointing. The red rice was cold and hard, while the sake lees soup was too rich—though the pork belly shabu-shabu was delicious! The staff's service was excellent. When we asked for milk that wasn’t available initially, they promptly prepared fresh milk for us. They also served meals carefully and attentively. My kindergarten-aged grandchild seemed to really like Setre. We were almost fully satisfied overall and left feeling good for our next sightseeing destination. Thank you very much!

    Writing a review offers a discount of about 1,000 yen on souvenirs like canelés, which made me wonder if the abundance of positive reviews was influenced by this. I visited with high expectations due to the many high ratings. First, there were multiple stains in the bathroom of our room that could be easily wiped off by hand. Since we had chosen a room with a bathtub to relax in, we requested to change rooms. The visible dirt raised doubts about whether the rooms were being properly cleaned. During dinner, I felt cold from the air conditioning and asked for warm tea midway through. However, as I had also ordered alcohol at that time, it seemed like they operated on a glass exchange system. The staff's reaction when I requested additional warm tea was unpleasant and left me feeling disappointed. As for dinner itself, while it looked visually appealing and Instagram-worthy, the taste did not quite match up. On the other hand, the steamed dish served at breakfast was delicious. We planned to enjoy an all-inclusive experience within the hotel for an entire day but found some aspects underwhelming. For instance, at check-in and during cocktail hour in the lounge area, there was no change in snacks offered—just three types (nuts, dried fruits, cookies), mini tarts, halved canelés (one per person), and salami slices available throughout both times. During dinner hours only these three snack types remained available as well. Drinks such as alcohol and juice were relatively consistently stocked. The canelés were limited to one halved piece per person; honestly speaking—I would have preferred paying more for accommodation if it meant enjoying one whole canelé instead! Regarding board games provided—they lacked sufficient pieces making certain games unplayable; thus limiting options suitable specifically between two players felt disappointing too. Footbaths involved immersing feet into warm soil-like material near chickens roaming nearby areas where chicken droppings occasionally appeared around washing stations—while understandable given animals' presence—it further emphasized concerns regarding hygiene especially after noticing unclean bathrooms earlier during our stay. That said—the staff assisting us during check-in/out interactions displayed exceptional kindness & professionalism which deserves recognition here! Ultimately though—as someone who opted specifically toward experiencing everything offered inside via full-board plans including meals etc., lingering dissatisfaction arose particularly surrounding lounges’ amenities/services overall quality-wise yet simultaneously acknowledging its potential value serving primarily tourists exploring Nara region instead remains noteworthy nonetheless!

    The Room and Hotel Facility were clean and very pleasant. Recommended for those who want to relax in a calm atmosphere after sightseeing in Nara until the evening. Smoking is allowed on the rooftop. However, due to SDGs initiatives, there were almost no amenities provided, and there was no amenity bar, which was inconvenient. The all-inclusive service I was looking forward to had a limited selection of snacks, and there was no replenishment of depleted snacks. I felt that the service did not match the price point. I would not consider repeating my stay here.

    Close to the Kintetsu station, with Kofuku-ji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and Todai-ji Temple within walking distance, making it a great location. The Room is comfortable and easy to relax in, and the staff provided excellent service. However, I felt that the volume of the hallway music at night could be lowered or even turned off as it was noticeable. As for amenities, I recall only shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and hand soap being provided. You may need to prepare other items yourself due to the concept of this accommodation.

    This was my first stay at the accommodation. I arrived early and planned to leave my luggage and go out, but I was informed that the room was ready, so I was guided to the room. The staff were friendly and approachable. During breakfast, when I struggled with a pot that wasn’t dispensing hot water, a staff member addressed me by my last name, which pleasantly surprised me in a good way. The lounge offered such a wide variety of drinks that it was hard to choose what to have—I wish I could have tried more if I were better with alcohol! When staying alone in a twin room, most hotels usually provide towels for two people; however, this hotel only provided one set of towels for one person. This required some planning around bath times to avoid using wet towels—a minor adjustment but worth noting nonetheless. Additionally, it would have been nice if the TV were slightly larger so that it could be comfortably viewed while leaning against the bed’s headboard. Overall, thanks to its great location and excellent service, I had an enjoyable solo trip in Nara!

    We visited Nara during Golden Week and stayed as a couple. The location was convenient, close to Sarusawa Pond and Kofuku-ji Temple. It was helpful that they stored our luggage before check-in. The early morning guided walk activity was enjoyable, with the guide sharing various insights. Highly recommended! Dinner portions were just right for me, yet satisfying for my husband as well. They carefully checked allergies, allowing us to dine with peace of mind. Breakfast featured a Japanese-style meal where we could choose two types of rice balls initially—it was delicious! I especially liked the grilled rice ball served in broth like ochazuke. The all-inclusive plan offered a variety of drinks, which we appreciated. There was also a water dispenser near the guest rooms—a thoughtful touch. One downside was the dinner pairing on the second day; there were moments when food and drinks didn’t align in timing. Although it seemed busy, it felt slightly disappointing since we were told beforehand that it would be different from the previous day’s pairing experience and enjoyable in its own way. Overall, we had a wonderful stay—exploring various sights and relaxing at the Hotel made for an enjoyable trip! We’d love to stay here again when visiting Nara next time!

    Morning activities are highly recommended!

    As a native of Nara now living in Hokkaido, I was delighted to see such a wonderful hotel in Nara, a place often overlooked due to its limited accommodations. I appreciated the thoughtful touches that focused on local Nara elements, from the ingredients used to the overall experience, which made our three-generation family trip truly memorable. The wine pairing during meals was also considerate for those like me who are not strong with alcohol but still wish to enjoy it in moderation. Among all the unforgettable experiences, my top recommendation is the morning activity! With cherry blossoms at their peak and fewer crowds, we enjoyed peaceful air and fascinating insights that even impressed my parents who live in Nara. My child also loved exploring records they had always admired! While I understand bringing your own toothbrush is better for the environment, it still feels like a bit of a challenge for some guests. The only downside was being unable to sleep well due to loud footsteps from what seemed like children upstairs until around 2 AM. It would have been nice if room assignments were managed more carefully... That said, an amazing breakfast lifted our spirits again. If given another opportunity, I'd love to explore Naramachi by bicycle and take more time enjoying my stay. Thank you very much!

    Meals that impress!

    I visit Nara every year to worship at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, but this was my first time staying in Nara in 55 years since my high school trip. I remember staying at an accommodation along Sarusawa Pond back then, so I chose a hotel near Sarusawa Pond again this time. The modern design of the exterior, interior, and amenities piqued my interest. Dinner was full of surprises, and I could feel the chef's dedication to creativity and innovation in utilizing ingredients. It reminded me of an astonishing dinner I had years ago at a famous restaurant in Spain's Basque region known for its masterful cuisine. One memorable dish was a delightful fusion of cotton candy and salmon that amazed me. From appetizers to desserts, every dish brought joy. Breakfast with various rice balls was also delightful. The hotel offered an early morning walking tour which I joined; listening to the guide’s explanations was very educational. Seeing familiar views of Nara Park every year took on new meaning after learning more about them—I felt it was well worth waking up early for this experience!

    I stayed in April. Before check-in, I asked if they could hold my luggage, and they kindly agreed, allowing me to enjoy sightseeing in Nara without any worries. Thank you so much for your help. The variety of free drinks was impressive, and I enjoyed spending time at the hotel as well. The room was spacious, and I was moved by the view of Sarusawa Pond, Mount Ikoma, and the sunset over Mount Ikoma from the window. I regret forgetting to visit the stargazing terrace. All meals were delicious as well. I will definitely stay again next time and would love to enjoy a beer on the stargazing terrace then! Thank you for creating such wonderful memories of Nara for me. This time, following our visit to Setre by Lake Biwa, it was another perfect mother-daughter experience. While it's hard to compare, we were truly satisfied with the soothing atmosphere here.     The meals were very delicious.

    The meals were very delicious. It would be even better if there was an Onsen. Since there were no toothbrushes provided, it would be nice to have them available, even for a fee, for those who didn't bring one. However, I was fully satisfied because the meals were great and the room was clean.
