Thank you very much.
During our 2-night, 3-day stay, we were able to truly relax both body and mind. Since we live in Saitama and this is Kagoshima, we can’t visit often, but we would definitely love to return. From the warm welcome to the delicious dinner… the treats of shochu and fireworks… I’m still thinking about how best to describe how wonderful it all was. The food was never flashy; instead, it was carefully prepared using freshly harvested vegetables and local fish and meat, and it felt as if I was becoming healthier from the inside out. Simply delicious! You can also feel the attention given to the tableware and presentation. The hot spring water… without a doubt, it was outstanding. We also felt completely at ease in our Room. Above all, we could sense kindness and care in every detail. The message written on a beautiful leaf, and the rice balls and rolled omelet you gave us to take when going out or returning—both were heartwarming and delicious. Thank you very much. Your warm hospitality—while maintaining just the right distance for each guest—was excellent in every way. This Accommodation reminded us of a gentle kindness that daily busyness had made us forget. Lastly… we hope that adorable pair of chickens stays healthy for a long time. Thank you for such wonderful memories. We would love to visit again for sure.

A heartwarming Accommodation you can be proud of on a global stage.
In a wonderful location along the Amorigawa River, a thatched-roof building stands quietly, and from the moment you arrive, it feels like you’ve stepped into another world. Being greeted by two chickens was also an unexpectedly charming sight. What stayed with me most was the hospitality of the staff. We enjoyed many dishes that made the most of local ingredients. It wasn’t just about being lavish—each course conveyed a heartfelt desire to delight those who made the journey here, and I truly felt that warmth. In the evening, we were able to enjoy fireworks by the irori hearth while sipping shochu. The care taken to create even these simple moments really showed how exceptional this Accommodation’s hospitality is. By chance, we also had an opportunity to hear directly from the owner about the early days after opening. Listening to how they overcame times that were far from smooth and built what Masyouen is today helped me understand why this place has been loved for so long. The private Onsen in our detached room was full of character as well, and soaking slowly in nature was something special. This is not an Accommodation that moves people with luxurious Facility alone; it’s a place where nature, architecture, cuisine, Onsen—and above all, human warmth—linger in your heart. There are many places I’d like to stay again, but this one made me feel like I wanted to come back home.

I was soothed by Japan’s nostalgic, quintessential countryside scenery.
This was our return visit after last year. This time, we stayed in the “Wind” Room. The setting—surrounded by the gentle sound of the river and abundant nature—was just as wonderful as ever, and we were able to relax and forget about everyday life. The “Sky” Room we stayed in last year was also lovely, but personally, I feel that a Room with a more traditional atmosphere suits this Accommodation’s ambiance and scenery even better. The meals featured plenty of local ingredients and vegetables, beautifully presented and gentle on the body. The staff were all warm and welcoming, making our stay truly comfortable. It’s a wonderful Accommodation that makes you want to come back again and again. We’d love to visit again in a different season.

A relaxing Accommodation for lasting memories
Both the outdoor and indoor spaces feel comfortably human in scale. The thatched roof, earthen walls, and other natural materials, along with the seamless connection between inside and outside, create an exceptionally pleasant and wonderful atmosphere. I would love for people in the architecture field to experience this. We stayed in the “Kaze” building. The full-width terrace is open to the front, partially screened with vertical slats and entirely covered with bamboo blinds. The lush green view from there seemed to tint the Room itself in green—an extraordinary space unlike anything we have experienced before. Photos cannot capture how good it truly is. When making our Reservation, we debated between Ishiharaso and this property, but we are very glad we chose this place for the spatial experience and for the time we were able to spend here. As an older guest, I found the meal a bit overwhelming in both portion size and number of dishes. The small rice ball given to us on departure was perfect on the train ride home, and the small bouquet brightened our table for several days, bringing back fond memories of our trip.

Meals
The Room and bath were good. The meals were average, with nothing particularly memorable. Overall rating: 3.

Relaxing time
We enjoyed everything—the staff’s warm hospitality, delicious meals, and the Onsen. The vegetables were especially tasty. The living room bath was also fantastic!

A One-of-a-Kind Accommodation
I was finally able to visit, and I arrived with high expectations. In conclusion, this Accommodation far exceeded them. The grounds felt like a small village. The front desk area was open and seamlessly connected with nature. It had rained before check-in that day, but luckily the sun came out right as we arrived. Raindrops fell from the thatched roof and sparkled beautifully. I had seen on YouTube that “rain is actually a good thing here,” and it truly is. There were lots of tadpoles in the pond next to the front desk. A staff member told me, “This season there are tadpoles, so we can’t clean the pond.” The staff felt like part of nature too—almost like villagers in this little world—and it was such a joy. When I asked whether the fruit growing on one of the trees could be eaten, they said, “Every year when it bears fruit, birds quickly eat it all up—but this year they haven’t touched it at all. It must taste bad this year. They know best.” It made me feel like a traveler chatting with villagers, and it was genuinely exciting. Sitting by the irori hearth watching the chickens, observing wild birds, and gazing at droplets falling from leaves and the thatched roof—I felt deeply relaxed. I also tried chicken sashimi for the first time in my life! I was nervous at first, but it was far more delicious than I imagined—clean-tasting with no odor at all like supermarket chicken, yet still rich in flavor. The Kagoshima-style course meal was wonderful. The cute little gift at checkout made me especially happy as someone who loves plants. I took it home and displayed it until it eventually dried out. This may have been simple politeness, but after checkout they complimented my hair pinned up with a kanzashi hairpin. When I mentioned that I often use one because I usually wear kimono, they said they would have loved to see me in kimono as well. Their warm hospitality moved me right to the very end. If only it were closer so I could return more easily… That’s how much I came to love this Accommodation—I even regret how far away it is. I will definitely come again—next time surely in kimono. Thank you very much.

Everything is wonderful.
We stayed here to celebrate my wife’s 60th birthday. We were deeply moved by the warm and wonderful care shown by the staff. We were very satisfied with the meals and the Onsen, and it became a great memory. Thank you very much.

Japan’s finest service is here!
The staff’s attentiveness and service were outstanding. The complimentary shochu served at the campfire area after dinner was excellent. The senior staff member’s thoughtful care—along with guidance on the next morning’s route and consideration for our children—was flawless in every way and made us feel wonderful. The senior female staff member in the dining area was truly professional, and the male staff member was very knowledgeable about shochu, making it a delightful time. This is an Accommodation we would definitely like to visit again.

This was the Accommodation I had long dreamed of staying at.
For those living in Kagoshima, “Wasure no Sato Gajoen” is often mentioned as one of the Accommodations they dream of staying at. This time I managed to free up some time, so I decided to make a Reservation and visit. From the very first welcome, the staff were exceptionally kind and attentive. From check-in, guidance to the bath, explanations about the meals, conversations around the irori hearth after dinner, to seeing us off on departure—it was a relaxing one-night, two-day stay thanks to everyone working at the Accommodation. The dining area had a wonderful atmosphere, and every dish was delicious with generous portions. The Room and Onsen Facility do show their age, but everything was carefully cleaned and we were able to stay comfortably. It was a Kirishima trip that reminded me that an Accommodation like this is perfect for forgetting everyday life and spending unhurried time.

A return visit, and ...
A return visit, and once again, completely satisfied. The Onsen facilities, including the room bath, main bath, and carbonated bath (Ramune-yu), were impeccable. The carbonated bath in particular has a lower temperature but keeps the body warm even after bathing. The meals were not the typical Kyoto-style cuisine but focused on local ingredients and flavors, offering a delightful taste of the region. The staff seemed to be mostly locals, with their dialects and accents adding a comforting touch. Combining the Onsen, meals, staff hospitality, and accommodation building creates a perfect terroir experience. Additionally, there was knowledgeable staff about alcohol—ideal for spending time doing nothing at all. Thank you very much!

Arrived during the check-in time and stayed until just before the check-out time, initially worried about having too much free time, but it was unnecessary. The exterior reflects the traditional Japanese landscape. The room features an open-air bath and a daybed designed for ultimate relaxation. The private bath system instead of a large public bath was a great touch, always available due to the small scale of the facility. Both meals and drinks were delicious. The service was perfectly balanced—attentive yet unobtrusive. It felt like visiting my grandmother's house, creating a wonderful stay. I hope to visit again someday!

Expecting a stay at a famous accommodation...
This is a renowned accommodation featured on various platforms, and I stayed with high expectations. Seasonal factors played a significant role, and during the summer, I strongly felt that insect control was challenging. Opening doors or windows often allowed insects to enter, which was unpleasant at times. The guest room's open-air bath was very relaxing, and the daybed was also enjoyable. However, it was disappointing that the cushions in the room were quite thin. It might be helpful to provide extra cushions so guests can lie down comfortably before setting up the futon. The private bath had an excellent water quality that felt great; however, I found the stairs leading to it narrow and noticed some inefficiency in movement flow. Regarding dinner and breakfast, I found the taste relatively good overall. The watermelon served after dinner lacked sweetness; perhaps substituting it with another option would be better. For breakfast, there was a discrepancy between the written descriptions of dishes provided on paper and their actual contents—about one-third seemed different—which felt odd. If given another opportunity, I would consider staying again during a different season.

Did we set our expectations too high?
Due to cancellations caused by concerns over the Shinmoedake eruption and Tokara Islands earthquakes, we were the only two guests staying that day. We were very satisfied with the room, and all staff members were friendly and demonstrated excellent hospitality. The meals, featuring vegetables from their own farm and chicken as the main ingredients, were healthy but might be a bit too much for elderly guests. The beef steak might not be necessary. Despite being given options for how the fish and eggs at breakfast would be prepared, they fell slightly short of expectations. The private open-air baths are entirely made of stone but lack handrails, which may cause concern for elderly or physically impaired guests; the open-air bath in the room should suffice. Perhaps our expectations had been set too high due to prior reviews.

A countryside house
This is my second stay at this accommodation, and I am once again impressed by the charm of the thatched-roof rooms and tiled-roof rooms surrounded by nature. The meals focus on natural ingredients, offering a cooking style that highlights the flavors of the ingredients rather than being overly luxurious. While chicken is the main dish, carefully selected vegetables are also served, and even someone like me who usually avoids salads thoroughly enjoyed them with pork miso. The rice was particularly outstanding—perfectly cooked and truly exceptional in quality. The staff provided attentive service, making my stay highly satisfying. Despite this year's intense heat, regular sprinkling of water helped create a refreshing atmosphere. Smoking areas are located near the hearth; although I expected it to be hot there, thanks to the water sprinkling effect, it was surprisingly comfortable. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

The Perfect Stay During the Season of Fresh Greenery
I stayed in the Room of Light. First, I was amazed by how spacious the Room was when I entered! Additionally, there were two baths in the Room. The large windows showcased fresh greenery, creating a perfect atmosphere. The amenities were well-stocked, allowing for a comfortable and carefree stay. The baths had amazing water that kept my skin warm and glowing without needing body cream. The meals were exceptional, featuring a course unique to Gajoen's style. Since the stay exceeded my expectations, I wanted to spend more money and ordered drinks at night; however, due to staff shortages, they mentioned they didn’t know how to prepare them. That said, this quirkiness is also part of Gajoen’s charm! (laughs) Overall, it was an incredible stay. I will definitely come back again!

Encounter with Seven Stars
During my stay, it coincided with the day when participants of the Seven Stars tour stayed at Gajoen. It is said that the concept of the Seven Stars Cruise Train was born when the president of JR Kyushu and the president of Gajoen shared drinks by the irori hearth at Gajoen. The next morning, I was kindly taken to Kareigawa Station by someone from the accommodation, marking my third encounter with Seven Stars in my life. The way the crew members of Seven Stars interact with their guests has similarities to how Gajoen's staff provide service, and their meticulous attention to detail is truly comforting. In "Kaze no Ma," there is a bathtub right next to the room where you can soak in hot water 24 hours a day, making it perfect for someone like me who enjoys freedom and relaxation. Upon departure, I received a small rice ball which came in handy as a quick snack when feeling peckish. Above all, I am deeply grateful for the thoughtful care and kind hospitality provided by everyone at this accommodation.

It was a wonderful accommodation.
The renovated accommodation in a traditional Japanese house was modern, clean, and comfortable. The guest room included an Onsen bath, which was spacious and provided a truly relaxing experience. The meals were intricately prepared and left a lasting impression. We enjoyed grilled kibinago fish and shochu by the irori hearth. It was the season for blooming iwatsutsuji flowers, which added to the beauty of our stay.

Heartwarming Hospitality
About 20 years ago, I purchased a book titled "50 Selected Accommodations for Relaxation," which featured accommodations highlighted on travel TV programs. At the top of the list was Gajoen. Since then, I had always wanted to visit but never had the chance—until now. The thatched-roof buildings, bathtubs carved from large rocks, and chickens roaming freely within the grounds were exactly as depicted in the book's photos. The fresh ingredients like homegrown vegetables and local chicken sashimi were tender and heartwarming. This trip was a celebration of our 45th wedding anniversary, and we received a congratulatory basket made with vegetables and flowers from the accommodation. We were deeply touched by this thoughtful gesture. Even after three days, the potatoes, onions, broccoli, and other items we brought back retained their flavor and were delicious. However, as we are accustomed to living with sofas or chairs in our daily life, staying in a Japanese-style room with a kotatsu was slightly inconvenient for us at our age. Additionally, during this season it was still cold for an open-air bath; however, the exceptional hospitality more than made up for it and left us feeling truly fulfilled. Thank you very much!

During my previous s...
During my previous stay at Myoken Ishiharaso, I loved the fizzy onsen water of Myoken Onsen, so I decided to stay here this time. However, the Ramune Bath was surprisingly only slightly carbonated (disappointing). The room's private onsen was great with natural flowing hot spring water, but it wasn’t fizzy and was much smaller than a typical home bath, which was a bit disappointing (also felt a bit conscious of the view from Myoken Ishiharaso across). That said, the bed was very comfortable and overall the room was pleasant. The renovated bathroom area added to the comfort. Meals were simple countryside dishes centered around vegetables; they were good in their own way, and especially the chicken was delicious! Perhaps due to feedback about strong flavors in some reviews, I found it rather mild for my taste (amusingly so). The thatched roof gave it an atmospheric charm with a unique world view—I can see why it's chosen as one of "Nanatsuboshi" accommodations. It’s unfortunate there weren’t any alcoholic beverages like post-bath beer available in the room; however, this helped me avoid overindulging and made for a healthier stay—so maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all. While I understand there are challenges involved in running such places, I did feel that the pricing might be slightly on the higher side.

Time slip to the good old days of Japan
I am turning 60 this year, and I was able to experience the days of my childhood 50 years ago. From local production for local consumption, white aprons, the smell of firewood, cold baths, to thick kotatsu blankets, everything was thoroughly conceptualized, making it a wonderful time. Thank you.

The pricing does not match the accommodation details.
This accommodation is not suitable for those with weak knees or hips. Using the shared open-air bath may also be challenging. Such details should be clearly stated in the basic information of the accommodation. During this trip with my mother, who has weak knees and hips, I requested special consideration in advance, but felt there was no effort made to accommodate us. It was only after I pointed out that the step from the entrance to the room was too high that any action was taken. When I asked if there were rooms available without steep stairs, I received a vague response about other guests already occupying them. If we had been informed beforehand that staying would be difficult, we could have avoided booking altogether. While I personally could enjoy the open-air bath as someone with no mobility issues, its view is obstructed by bamboo blinds, which might feel unsatisfactory for those seeking a sense of openness. As for meals, while I understand their focus on quality ingredients, it came as a surprise when my mother and I had to share one small grilled fish for breakfast—she took one half (the tail), and I took the other (the head). It wasn’t even a large fish like mackerel but rather a small ayu fish—an experience unlike any other. In my opinion, compared to another ryokan across from this location where we stayed a year ago at a similar price point, everything here fell short of expectations. I felt that the pricing did not match what was offered during our stay.

The atmosphere was simply amazing!
With a quiet and calm atmosphere, the name "Wasure no Sato" (Forgotten Village) at the beginning of Gajoen was perfect! Even before staying, I had a fairly concrete image from the IKYU stay record, but I was able to spend a wonderful time that far exceeded that imagination! The Michelin selection was also understandable! Thank you very much!

It was wonderful.
I made a reservation because of the good reputation from an acquaintance. The room was comfortable, the food was delicious, and the service was kind, allowing us to relax. The meals were prepared to be easy to eat for my elderly mother, and we received souvenirs like rice balls on our way back, making it an unforgettable and enjoyable trip. I would like to stay again.

A property I wanted to stay at once
Selected by Michelin Key This is a property I wanted to stay at. Everything, from the people to the onsen and the atmosphere, was excellent, and the natural carbonated onsen was truly a great experience. There are many things you can't experience elsewhere, such as a snack box set up in the hearth along the way. At night, kappa sake is served at the hearth, allowing for various conversations, which was a valuable experience. The room has an onsen right as you enter, and the innovative design was very surprising. It's a unique room design, and I think it's one of a kind. After a bath, you can relax on the veranda and enjoy the view of the river, which was truly a luxurious experience. There is also a kotatsu, where you can relax and unwind, making it very comfortable. The meals were meticulously prepared, and I enjoyed them very much. The breakfast offered experiences I had never seen at other properties. The chickens were freely and naturally strolling around, which made me feel very peaceful. I'm really glad I stayed here. I would like to stay again in a different season next time.

Experience the charm of traditional Japanese houses.
A lovely Stays where you can experience traditional Japanese life with a thatched roof, plaster walls, and freshly picked vegetables. Unfortunately, it was raining, but they were well-prepared with umbrellas and towels, and the hospitality and service were excellent. The meals were very satisfying, with beautifully prepared fresh vegetables and local meat and fish. (I apologize for not being able to finish it.) They made the leftover rice into rice balls for us. Seasonal flowers were arranged here and there, showing thoughtful attention to detail. The hot water felt a bit lukewarm, but later it warmed the body and made the skin smooth, making it a good spring. In the morning, the rooster started crowing around 4:30 AM (our Room was next to the chicken coop), waking us up early. I wished I could have rested a little longer.

Close, yet in the mountains.
The environment is very good, and the bath has a wild feel which was nice. The meals are good, but they seem a bit geared towards older guests. Since they keep chickens, they start crowing from 4:30 in the morning. My room was next to the old house's kitchen, so there was noise from work and conversations, and on top of that, the crowing of the chickens... I can only say that part was a miss.
