    This is a wonderful Ryokan!

Due to unexpected trouble, my check-in was significantly delayed and I was about to give up on dinner, but they kindly prepared it for me without any fuss, which was a huge help. The food was delicious and full of Gifu flavors, the Room had a wonderful traditional atmosphere, and the Onsen was incredibly relaxing—everything was perfect! Next time, I’d love to stay and enjoy it at a more leisurely pace.

Although I made a last-minute Reservation for No Meals Included after 6:00 PM, the staff provided very courteous guidance, and I was able to smoothly enjoy the large public bath, the lounge, and my stay. Thank you very much. It was a truly memorable stay.

We fully enjoyed the views of the Nagara River and traditional cormorant fishing, making our stay truly memorable.

I chose Juhachiro because I had always wanted to see the traditional cormorant fishing, and they offer a boarding Plan. After working up a sweat on a walk around Kawaramachi, I refreshed in the large public bath, then had dinner from 5:30 pm. We gathered in the lobby at 7:15 pm and were guided to the viewing boat. The pier was just outside via the Accommodation’s private passageway, and it was incredibly convenient to board casually in the Accommodation’s yukata and slippers. After the cormorant fishing ended a little after 8:30 pm and we returned to the Accommodation, I enjoyed another soak in the large public bath—making it an unforgettable day. I truly felt this was a luxurious cormorant-fishing Plan that only an established Accommodation with over 160 years of history could arrange. The Room was generously sized, with two semi-double beds and a large dining table, and above all, the view of the Nagara River flowing directly below was beyond my expectations. Dinner was served in a private room: local dishes full of flavor such as Hida beef hot pot, salt-grilled ayu sweetfish, and simmered eel. Breakfast also offered an impressive variety—almost like a lunch buffet—and I was completely satisfied. Also, towels are stocked in the large public bath so you can use it anytime without hassle, and at the lobby lounge you can enjoy drinks and ice pops until 9:00 pm—such generous hospitality made me very happy (the Nagara River Onsen original-blend iced tea was delicious like nothing I’d tried before). Inside the building were displays such as shikishi boards from title matches for shogi masters, sealed-move papers, panels on cormorant fishing, and historical timelines; exploring inside was enjoyable as well. This time my purpose was cormorant fishing, but once renovations to Gifu Castle’s main keep are complete, this is an Accommodation I’d love to visit again for that reason too.

    It was a great Accommodation.

It was my first time visiting Nagaragawa Onsen. I booked an affordable Room with no view, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when I opened the window, I could actually see the Nagara River and even watch the cormorant fishing boats depart. All the staff were very pleasant. It was also nice that drinks and ice cream were available freely. It was a great Accommodation, combining a traditional building with modern Facilities. The brown-colored Onsen was a first for me as well, and it warmed me up nicely.

The brownish hot spring water is excellent.

A 10-minute taxi ride to downtown. At night, enjoy delicious food in Gifu City. Great value for money and a very good Accommodation. All the staff were kind.

I returned because the view from my Room during last year’s stay was incredibly relaxing. Unfortunately, while I could see the Nagara River from the window, it seemed to be directly above the bath area, so I couldn’t really enjoy the view. There was also a banquet hall on the same floor, and the hallway was filled with food smells and quite noisy, with children running around—so my relaxing trip ended up being a bit disappointing. As for breakfast, given that many guests of all ages stay here it may be unavoidable, but there wasn’t much that I wanted to eat. Since meals strongly affect your final impression of a stay, this stood out to me. That said, all staff were pleasant and kind, so I think this Accommodation’s service is excellent.

A relaxing Onsen Accommodation nestled in a retro-modern streetscape

We stayed here as a family during the Obon holidays. “Juhachiro,” nestled in the atmospheric Kawaramachi district along the Nagara River, was a wonderful Accommodation that preserves the charm of a classic Onsen Ryokan. The entire building has aged beautifully in a positive way, and it has been carefully renovated, creating a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. The Onsen is said to be supplied from a source north of the Nagara River, and it felt incredibly soothing. It warmed us through to the core, and we were able to unwind and fully enjoy the baths while being healed by the view of the Nagara River from the window. Dinner was kaiseki cuisine featuring Hida beef and ayu (sweetfish). The presentation was beautiful and enjoyable to look at as well. The seasoning and aroma were exquisite, bringing out each ingredient’s natural flavors; everything was cooked perfectly, and the meat had an almost melt-in-your-mouth texture. We were completely satisfied with every aspect of our stay, and we would love to return again in another season.

Enjoy a convenient and comfortable cormorant fishing boat ride with Juhachiro.

This time, I stayed to enjoy cormorant fishing with my elementary-school grandchild. It was hot during the day, and even after visiting Gifu Park, Squirrel Village & Gifu Castle, and the Nawa Insect Museum, we still had time to spare. Although we arrived before check-in time, we were able to wait in the lobby while enjoying cold refreshments. As always, the Accommodation provided consistently reliable service and a comfortable stay. In particular, for boarding the cormorant-fishing boat, we were able to relax in a private room at the Accommodation until meeting time while enjoying a kaiseki meal, then board via Juhachiro’s exclusive passageway in slippers (they provide bottled water for the boat and tabi socks). The boatman and crew were kind, and we could watch the cormorant fishing up close all the way through cleanup—an experience we thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended.

    High-class???

About 15 years ago, I stayed here the night before my younger brother’s wedding (at Miyako Hotel Gifu Nagaragawa nearby). The memories from that time were wonderful, so I decided to stay again after a long time. While some aging of the Facility is understandable, the Room window glass was dirty and there were spider webs. The dinner venue was also unpleasant: simple tables and chairs set up in a banquet hall, visible dirt on the windows, and dust under the tables. Both dinner and breakfast felt like what you would expect at a chain Hotel, which surprised me. Considering this is positioned as a high-class Ryokan, it was disappointing. At breakfast we were seated together with a large group of junior-high or high-school students, and given today’s rising prices, perhaps around 50,000 yen for two people is simply in line with what you get for the price. That said, all of the staff were friendly and very kind. As this is a long-established Ryokan, I hope you will continue to preserve it with care.

This was our first trip using a wheelchair. As it may be our last trip, we chose a place that is wheelchair-accessible, has an Onsen, and serves delicious meals. From the moment we arrived, you kindly assisted with the wheelchair, and we truly appreciate that you arranged a Room in an easy-to-use location for wheelchair access. The Onsen was also accessible by wheelchair, and we were able to enjoy it about twice. Above all, they had more appetite than usual and ate a lot. Thank you for helping us create one last wonderful memory.

    Cormorant Fishing Experience

We stayed here for an Ukai (cormorant fishing) experience and fully enjoyed the excellence of this long-established Ryokan. We also really enjoyed the large public bath, including the open-air bath and herbal bath.

    Satisfied with everything

Thank you for upgrading our Room. The Onsen was very relaxing, and I felt the staff were excellent. If I had one request, it would be to have a reading light. I would definitely like to stay here again if I visit Gifu.

Please continue to help promote Gifu.

I’m originally from Gifu City and currently live in Tokyo. Even when I come back home for personal reasons, I usually stay at a Business Hotel, so this was my first time staying at Juhachiro as an Onsen Ryokan. It’s an area and a Ryokan I’ve known since childhood, and it really moved me to realize how you have been welcoming guests who visit Gifu as a tourist destination for so many years. It was a shame I couldn’t stay longer, but the calm atmosphere throughout the property and the warm hospitality of the staff made me feel like I was truly on a trip. Thank you very much. I would be happy if you continue to help make my hometown of Gifu even more vibrant together with the entire Nagaragawa Onsen area.

Great service and an excellent Onsen.

The long-established feel is reassuring, and the air by the Nagara River is wonderful. The property is clean and well maintained throughout. The staff member who assisted us from the parking lot to our Room left a great impression, which made our overall image of the Accommodation very positive.

    A Thoughtfully Appointed Onsen Hotel

About eight years ago, I stayed here with my family after taking an ubune boat to watch cormorant fishing. This time, I traveled alone for personal reasons. I usually stay at the Miyako Hotel across the river, but I found online that Juroku-ro accepts solo stays without dinner, so I made a Reservation. My check-in ended up being very late, but when I contacted them, they kindly accommodated me. The Room was a beautifully renovated Japanese-style room with beds; luckily it faced the Nagara River, with a great view and a very comfortable stay. I also enjoyed the Onsen—it felt wonderful. It was a pity there was no sauna. Every staff member greeted me properly and provided pleasant service. Since I stayed two nights, I was able to join the free morning Sengoku mini walking tour and visit nearby Gifu Park, where we learned about Oda Nobunaga’s history and saw one of Japan’s three great Buddha statues that is not widely known. Although it was a personal trip, I still managed to do some sightseeing. I would definitely like to stay again next time.

After reading the Reviews, I booked on a whim the day before my stay. When I arrived at the Accommodation and the entrance door opened, I was struck by its long-established atmosphere. It is old, but very well maintained. The Onsen was wonderful. My body stayed warm for a long time, and my skin felt silky smooth. Breakfast was a buffet, and the quality of this buffet was high—everything was very delicious. This is an Onsen Accommodation I would love to visit again.

Gifu Castle view from the Room.

I came to Gifu for a conference and celebration. I usually stay at a Hotel near the station, but this time I chose this Accommodation. Nagaragawa Onsen is a treasure of Japan, and I could see Gifu Castle from my Room. After joining an online meeting from the Room, I enjoyed Chinese cuisine in town that evening. The next morning, after having ayu rice porridge for breakfast, I climbed up to the castle, soaked in the Accommodation’s Onsen, and then headed to Gifu Station. Is the framed calligraphy at the historic entrance by Gyokudo? Thank you very much for your hospitality.

An Accommodation with outstanding staff, excellent Onsen, and superb cuisine.

All the staff were wonderful, and both the Onsen and the meals were excellent at this Accommodation. It was right when the cherry blossoms were beautiful, and it was great to take walks along the Nagara River, around the nearby streets, and in the park. Since it’s at the foot of Gifu Castle, I’d like to visit Gifu Castle next time. I stayed in Gifu for the first time by extending my trip a bit for an overnight stay before work in Nagoya. I think it’s great that you can access it in about 15 minutes by taxi from Gifu Station and about 35 minutes from Nagoya Station. Even when staying at a good Hotel, I had been tired of Nagoya’s lack of humidity, but I really felt that Gifu is full of moisture. I would like to stay again.

This was our third stay. This time, as it was a birthday trip for my father, we chose this Accommodation for its delicious cuisine. It had been six years since our last visit, but the food was still of an exceptionally high standard, and we were very satisfied. The service from the woman who escorted us to our room and the woman in charge of our dinner table was polite and excellent. As it was a three-day holiday weekend and seemed fully booked, we expected the Onsen to be crowded, but it was spacious, and we were able to relax and enjoy it at any time without any congestion. We will definitely stay again.

    Overall, I’m satisfied, but…

Overall, we were satisfied, but the staff member who came to lay out the futons entered our Room at the wrong time for our dinner and was in the middle of laying them out when we returned from the bath. We expected them to come back later, but one of the two staff members (a woman) continued working. My wife needed to dry her hair, so she asked them to return later, but was told it was fine to dry it without worrying about them, which put her in an awkward position. I asked again for them to come back later, and only then did they leave. The other staff member understood immediately and started putting things away, but the woman would not listen at all, which was disappointing to see. We were very satisfied with the quality of the Onsen and dinner, as well as the service overall.

    A Relaxing, Peaceful Accommodation

I stayed for one night on a great-value Plan with check-in on Sunday evening. As it was early March, it was quiet, and I could enjoy the bath and meals without crowds in a relaxed atmosphere. Gifu Park, home to Mount Kinka, was within walking distance, and Kawaramachi’s Bunkaya shop was also nearby. It was a stay that let me truly appreciate the charm of Gifu. Thank you very much.

    We had a wonderful time.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were wonderful. At check-in, they carefully explained the facilities, and the staff member who escorted us to our Room was also truly excellent. The Room was thoroughly cleaned and very comfortable. The large public bath was spotless, with a spacious washing area, and the bath itself was great. We had a very pleasant stay. I regret choosing a plan with breakfast only, because the breakfast was truly delicious. Next time, I would like to stay with dinner included. Thank you very much.

This was my first time staying at this accommodation. I had been curious about it for a long time, and it turned out to be an even more wonderful ryokan than I had imagined. First of all, the room was very clean and tidy. The view from the window was amazing, with both the night and morning scenery leaving a lasting impression. The bath seemed to be in its original state before renovation? It felt a bit old but still satisfactory enough. The food was delicious; however, if I may say so, I would have liked to have plain white rice. This time we chose the special kaiseki course—does the regular kaiseki course include plain white rice? Breakfast was served buffet-style; while I initially thought buffets might not suit a ryokan setting, the Hoba miso was delicious, and there were plenty of desserts to enjoy as well. All of the staff were kind and helpful. I would love to stay here again someday!

    I will stay again.

Four women, including my mother, sister, daughter, and myself, visited by car. The large parking lot was convenient, and the meals were very delicious. The staff were all very friendly and made our stay pleasant. Although the Facility is old, it seems to be well-maintained. We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath but also enjoyed the public bath. There were many types of baths to enjoy thoroughly. We talked as a family about coming again next year. Thank you very much!

    Satisfied

Both the service and facilities were highly satisfactory. Highlights include: - The twin bed Japanese-Western style room had convenient outlets (type-A and C) by each bed, along with a headboard featuring indirect lighting, perfect for placing devices like phones, tablets, etc. - The gender-swapped large public bath provided towels and bath towels, allowing easy access without needing to bring them from the room (face towels are also available in the room). - For dinner, we opted for a Japanese kaiseki meal instead of Hida beef. Local sake was abundant, including Takayama's rice shochu. - At the breakfast buffet venue, two-tiered wagons for trays were available to minimize trips back and forth to your seat. During peak times around 8 AM, staff verbally guided us to available seats despite no formal announcements. Additionally, tablecloths were replaced after each guest finished eating—a pleasant surprise! The lobby offered free drinks (including post-bath ice pops), creating a relaxing atmosphere. Although I didn’t participate myself, events like tours of Kawaramachi seemed to be organized as well. Even though my home is relatively close and staying overnight wasn’t necessary, I decided on a one-night stay purely for relaxation and enjoying the cuisine—and it was absolutely worth it! Perfect satisfaction at Juhachiro!

We stayed in a riverside Japanese-style room as a family of four on October 26th and 27th. The hospitality was exceptional, making our stay very comfortable. The staff's service ...

The staff's service during the meal was unpleasant. Despite placing a drink order when I was shown to my Room, the first drink arrived only after I had finished my first course. Subsequent service was also slow. While I thought it might be due to busyness, I couldn't understand why there was nearly double the time difference in serving meals to my Room compared to the adjacent private room, even though we were on the same course menu. From that moment, everything felt uncomfortable—the loud and unrefined footsteps, entering halfway into the Room before saying "Excuse me," and closing the door behind them with one hand as they left. Was this because I am a solo female traveler? Even though I usually enjoy drinking more alcohol, this time it didn’t progress much, and by the latter half of the meal, even eating became difficult for me.
