    Mr./Ms. Chitose stay...

Mr./Ms. Chitose stayed with us for the third time this year. One of this Accommodation’s highlights is the meals, but above all, it’s the quality of the hot spring water. We look forward to visiting again.

    コリダリスブルー

Savor the unique charm and seasonal ingredients of a mountain village in the thawing snow season at an Accommodation with natural hot spring water.

On my first trip to Niigata, my daughter—who has visited the Matsudai and Matsunoyama areas many times for her research—had told me all sorts of good things (the wild mountain vegetables are delicious, the local sake is delicious, the rice and vegetables are delicious… basically everything is delicious), and this time I finally got to stay in Matsunoyama Onsen. The young Asian woman at the front desk (perhaps even describing her that way is outdated now…) spoke such excellent Japanese it felt native-level, and everything—from the check-in explanation to paying at the shop the next day and settling up at check-out—was smooth and wonderful. Our Room was a twin with a semi-open-air bath fed directly from the source. It also had an 8-tatami Japanese-style space with wooden flooring (with chairs and a table) by the bedroom, plus a separate shower booth that was very handy for rinsing off quickly. We’d heard the spring temperature is close to 90°C, so we assumed we’d need to add water and stir it together before we could get in; choosing a slightly smaller bath (“Yamazakura”) when making our Reservation turned out to be exactly right. After breakfast, we were also able to enjoy it as a footbath before check-in. The meals we’d been looking forward to were served in semi-private dining rooms in Matsunoyama-go: dinner was “Satoyama no Gottsuo,” and breakfast was “Matsunoyama Asa Manma.” For dinner drinks, we ordered on a tablet at the table. We chose three kinds of “Tsumaari Kurabe,” which paired perfectly with three satoyama appetizers. Then came one small dish after another featuring wild mountain vegetables—mountain enoki mushrooms, kogomi fern shoots, udo shoots, butterbur sprouts—followed by sashimi including Uonuma Miyuki trout. Next was their terraced-rice-field hot pot: spring cabbage and mushrooms with locally raised pork and crispy rice added in. The miso-based carp soup reminded me of flavors from my childhood (in Shinshu). For dessert, their Spanish-style rice ice cream was a wonderful idea—and truly delicious. “At Asa Manma,” six beautifully arranged Chitose staple side dishes appeared under the theme “friends of white rice.” There were onsen eggs with Mirai natto, simmered wheat gluten cakes (fu), wild mountain vegetables grilled on a ceramic plate, rice served in an ohitsu tubule pot? plus miso soup. Thank you for such an amazing meal. Before check-in, we parked at lot near entrance? Actually: By way of note: before check-in we parked our car at parking lot at entrance? Let's translate clean: By way of note: before check-in we parked our car in free parking lot with toilets near entrance? We'll do final. By way of note: before check-in we left our car in the free parking lot (with restrooms) at入口?? Let's finalize. By way of note: before check-in we parked our car in free parking lot (restrooms available) near entrance to town area?? We'll keep natural. Also mention flowers list; translate names common English/latin maybe; keep etc. Let's craft final text without Japanese remnants like titles; but can romanize? better translate as set-menu names maybe keep as menu names romanized; ok. Need remove stray "tubule pot?" fix. Let's deliver clean translation only with line breaks preserved same as original paragraphs.

    A simple, warm Accommodation

I’ve stayed at many Accommodations, but this one felt truly original and made for a memorable stay. The meals were on the smaller side, but everything was delicious—local specialties and unique dishes using wild mountain vegetables, all carefully prepared with locally sourced ingredients. For breakfast, I also enjoyed the signature white rice along with a wide variety of toppings to go with it. As others have mentioned, the Onsen has a distinctive aroma and very salty water, and I’m glad I visited for that experience as well. One point for improvement: I wanted to enjoy the high-quality bath multiple times, but since we had to bring the bath towel from the Room each time, we ended up reusing the same one repeatedly. It would be great if bath towels were also provided in the public bath area.

    I stayed in a 10-tat...

I stayed in a 10-tatami Japanese-style room. The window had only shoji screens and no curtains, so it became very bright in the morning and I woke up in the 5 a.m. hour, which made it hard to relax. The Onsen water quality and setting were excellent, and it truly felt like one of Japan’s three great medicinal hot springs.

    Stayed in a room wit...

Stayed in a room with a private bath, No Meals Included. With tatami flooring throughout the building, the large public bath, and the standalone open-air “Tsukimi-no-Yu” moon-viewing bath, getting around inside was very comfortable. Since it was No Meals Included, the Accommodation provided information about the Onsen town at check-in. There were places I wanted to visit, but the private bath was so perfectly adjusted that I didn’t feel like going out. The reason I ended up with No Meals Included was that I didn’t confirm carefully enough when booking through IKYU, but thanks to that I was able to fully enjoy the in-room bath and was completely satisfied. The source water is said to be very hot, so perhaps only a small amount is added, but even early in the morning when temperatures dropped (with the outer door of the private bath left open—semi open-air), it stayed at the same comfortable temperature as at night. Many Accommodations have cooler water by morning (which seems natural), so this was surprising—perhaps due to skilled hot-spring management. After soaking in both the large public bath and Tsukimi-no-Yu, you won’t want to go outside. Next time, I’ll make sure it includes meals before making a Reservation.

An Accommodation you’ll want to return to

This was our second stay, and it reminded us how much we love this Accommodation. From the warm welcome on arrival to our departure, we had an exceptional time. The staff’s hospitality was outstanding; the Onsen water quality and baths were excellent; and both dinner and breakfast were delicious—everything was perfect. Since it was a cold time in February, the building felt a little chilly at times, but even so, it is a wonderful Accommodation. This is an Onsen Accommodation we definitely want to stay at again and visit every year. Thank you very much.

    Enjoy Onsen to the Fullest

We enjoyed the Onsen thoroughly as we stayed in a room with an open-air bath and had the option for late check-out. Having a towel dryer was very convenient since we used the bath multiple times (it would be great if all rooms had one). The area is known for its delicious rice, so having a light meal course that still allows you to enjoy rice is a nice option. However, even when arriving early, the hot spring eggs are always unavailable—please consider increasing their quantity.

    I had a relaxing stay.

I arrived earlier than the check-in time, but the staff kindly accommodated me, leaving a very good impression. The meals were delicious, especially the rice! The Onsen was also excellent!

    The hot water is excellent!

I heard the onsen was excellent, so I made a reservation! The aromatic and hot water felt very effective and relieved my fatigue. The room also had a bath, so I enjoyed soaking in the onsen to my heart's content. The staff maintained an appropriate distance, making me feel comfortable. Dinner was served at a good pace, which was great. If I may suggest, it would be nice to have towels available in the bath area since bringing them from the room is a bit inconvenient. Everything else was wonderful!

    Summer Vacation Trip for Two

On August 11th, we enjoyed the Satoyama Gotsuo Plan. Both dinner and breakfast featured unique menus using local vegetables and specialties, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The rice was exceptional, and for dinner, we could choose between a bowl of rice or a salted rice ball. The meals were truly delicious. The Onsen had a slightly thick and unique water quality that felt very pleasant. We had heard that the Onsen's temperature was naturally high, but when we visited the outdoor "Tsukimi no Yu" bath early in the morning, it was too hot to enter. Despite efforts by four men who happened to be there to add water or stir it for some time, it didn’t reach a comfortable temperature. We eventually gave up bathing there and went to the main bath instead. It was unfortunate as the outdoor bath had such charm; however, aside from this point, our satisfaction with this accommodation was very high. We hope to visit again in another season!

We hope to improve the dining experience.

Everything about the accommodation was truly perfect, except for the meals. Both breakfast and dinner lacked volume and felt as modest as a vegetarian meal. There was no standout dish to serve as a main course, leaving no memorable impression of what we ate, which was disappointing. It would have been better if the meals had a bit more flair. The menu consisted mostly of small side dishes, making it somewhat difficult to eat without a spoon overall. The quality of the hot spring water was excellent.

    I had a relaxing time.

Though slightly dated, the service, food, salted rice balls, Onsen, Onsen eggs, and sake were all excellent. The only downsides were the lack of a comb in the bath area and no power outlet at the sink in the Room. Still, I would love to stay here again if I have another chance.

I would like to stay longer next time.

I really enjoyed Matsunoyama Onsen. The accommodation offers great value for money, and I would love to visit again. The entire facility has tatami flooring, so there’s no need for slippers, which was very convenient. The onsen, one of Japan's three medicinal hot springs, has a unique aroma and provides excellent warmth. Meals featured plenty of vegetables and local dishes that suited my taste perfectly. Breakfast was delicious—I even had seconds! The chopped summer vegetable dish called "Yatara" was particularly tasty. It seems many guests are repeat visitors, which is understandable given the quality of this accommodation. The relatively new open-air bath was very pleasant, and I could see a sky full of stars. I loved the atmosphere of the library called Chitose Bunko; we talked about staying for a multiple night stay next time to relax and enjoy reading there at leisure. One night simply wasn’t enough. However, one downside was that the futon consisted only of a thin mattress and blanket, making it hard to sleep well. Next time, I’ll choose a room with beds instead.

    The Onsen was great!

The building is well-maintained, and the staff provided courteous service. The meals were delicious, and I had seconds of rice. Unfortunately, the Room had a tobacco smell. When adjusting the air conditioner, a faint tobacco odor became noticeable with changes in humidity. While the pillowcases were replaced, bringing them close to my nose also revealed a tobacco scent. The futon mattress is made of very soft sponge material.

The perfect accommodation for a relaxing and leisurely stay.

This was my first visit to Matsunoyama Onsen, and I chose this accommodation because I wanted to try the "Touji Pork" (laughs). First of all, the staff were amazing—so friendly that it felt like coming back home. Even though I arrived early, they kindly let me check into my room ahead of time, which I greatly appreciated. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable for relaxing. The bed was also very cozy to sleep in. The bamboo leaf-wrapped dumplings served as a tea snack were incredibly delicious and got me excited right from the start (laughs). As for the onsen, it lived up to its reputation with its unique qualities—the water kept me warm for a long time! The large public bath was excellent as well. I especially enjoyed the "Tsukimi no Yu" bath and the private open-air bath that becomes free at night—it was absolutely fantastic! The boiled eggs and sake offered after bathing were also delightful treats. And then there’s the food—simply outstanding! While simple in style, every dish complemented rice perfectly. The rice itself was so delicious that I ended up eating a lot during both dinner and breakfast. Of course, the Touji Pork was incredibly tasty too! I also found it fun that orders could be made via a touch panel system—it added an interesting touch. I visited their bar located just in front of the accommodation as well; their sherry wine was exceptionally good! Chatting with them made for an enjoyable evening until late at night—I left completely satisfied. This is such a wonderful place where you can relax quietly at your own pace—a charming accommodation offering warmth and simplicity that makes you feel at ease.

Onsen with a proud and timeless history

Arrived at the accommodation during check-in time. Enjoyed five Onsen baths: the first right after arrival, the second before dinner, the third after dinner, the fourth before bed, and the fifth in the morning before breakfast—two more than usual. With fewer people around, it was a relaxing experience to soak in hot, salty water that deeply penetrated and rejuvenated my body. After bathing, cold water was refreshing; leftover ice pops or Onsen eggs were a delightful treat. Dinner felt slightly lacking but being able to have unlimited servings of Tokamachi rice was appreciated. Breakfast was thoroughly satisfying. Nearby attractions include the stunning beech forest called Bijinbayashi and historical sites like Murayama Residence (connected to Ango Sakaguchi) and Omineyama Museum—both worth visiting.

    Unexpectedly Wonderful Accommodation

Before my stay, based on various media reviews, I had the impression that the accommodation was quite old, with light meals and excellent Onsen but not much else to expect. Although I didn’t research when it was renovated, I was pleasantly surprised to find a spacious and clean renovated Japanese-Western style room with a pristine toilet and sink. The open-air bath operated on a time rotation system and was very clean with a pleasant aroma of cypress wood. Most guests were older adults, creating a calm atmosphere with few international visitors, which made the overall experience very relaxing. The unique service of hot spring eggs and sake from 4 PM added charm; the eggs were perfectly seasoned with salt and delicious. The large public bath wasn’t crowded, allowing for a leisurely soak. Dinner exceeded expectations in both quantity and quality; each dish had thoughtful details that made it enjoyable and flavorful. Uniquely served salted rice balls allowed us to savor the natural taste of rice—a truly satisfying dinner experience. After 11 PM, two private baths were available for free use until morning, allowing us to enjoy them at night as well as in the morning. The beds were comfortable for restful sleep. In the morning, surrounded by fresh greenery under seasonal sunlight while swallows flew around—this picturesque countryside view left an unforgettable impression. Breakfast featured rice-centered dishes like "manma-meshi," which were incredibly tasty; grilled miso mountain vegetables stood out with their rich aroma unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before during breakfast! Other accompaniments like "mirai natto" enjoyed uniquely with salt added fun variety. This wonderful accommodation left such an impression that I would love to visit again if given another opportunity!

    Enjoy medicinal hot spring baths

I love onsens and often stay alone at various places. In November, I went on an onsen tour about five times. This is my second time at this property this year. Last time, I stayed in the standard type room. Since it was the weekend, the bath was crowded (the large public bath is not very big), so I didn't feel like I could fully enjoy the hot water, but the onsen left a strong impression, so this time I stayed in a room with a private bath. I was able to fully enjoy it. It is said to be one of Japan's three great medicinal baths, and it has a unique spring quality, very salty, with a distinctive petroleum-like smell, and the source is high temperature, giving a strong impression. I was able to enjoy it many times with divided baths in the room. The meals were not extravagant feasts but focused on Niigata's uniqueness, and I personally enjoyed the Niigata-style menu. I felt it was better than last time. I think it depends on the season. They offer a lot of local products, which might be a matter of personal preference, but I enjoyed it. I especially took natto home as a souvenir. A hidden delicious discovery team. If you're aiming for the onsen, I recommend a room with a private bath, but personally, I'm used to living with chairs, so getting up and down in a tatami room was a hassle, so it would be nice to have a Western-style room. If I had to say, that's about my only request; otherwise, I was very satisfied. The proprietress also saw me off properly when I left, and I thought it was a well-managed property. After all, the top must set a good example. It's a good property. I would like to visit again.

I would like to use it again in the future.

I stayed on a waiting list during the long holiday. The food is delicious, and the onsen is excellent. The staff is considerate, and I like this property. One disappointing point was that the futon was already laid out in the room from the time of check-in around 16:30, which was unsettling. (What is the low table for?) If there is a manpower issue, it would be better to just put in a bed. I hope it will be improved as I would like to stay again next time.

    Stay in a universal room

I spent the first night of our trip to eat new rice with my mother and sister at your property. There were many other guests on parent-child trips, creating a calm atmosphere. The onsen was incredibly salty! That's why it warmed my body, making me want to take a bath multiple times. It seemed that ice cream and drinks were prepared after the bath if you went early. I used a wheelchair inside the facility due to my bad leg. The hallway to the room was barrier-free, but the slope was steep and a bit dangerous. For dinner, we requested a plan with a smaller portion, which was just right for our appetite. The onsen pork was tender and delicious. The next morning's breakfast was full of local products, and my mother, who usually doesn't eat natto, liked it so much that she bought some to take home. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    A bit disappointing

The hot water is good, but it's too hot for most people to enter the indoor bath. Even for someone like me who loves hot water, I had to warm up in the open-air bath first. During my bath, no one else entered the indoor bath. The owner also mentioned that people only enter the indoor bath to soak their feet, and only the open-air bath is used for bathing. The meals were different from the usual menu and had some creativity. The breakfast consisted mostly of items that could be preserved for a long time, with many things like tsukudani. The most disappointing thing for us was the futon, which was like the so-called "senbei futon," making it feel like we were sleeping directly on the tatami. Our bodies were sore the next day. The Room was also bland and lacked atmosphere. The service was limited to serving meals, with no communication. Amenities were minimal, with only a hand towel and bath towel provided for the bath, and no towels available for use in the washroom.
