    We had a relaxing stay.

    It was a great Accommodation, just as the Reviews said. I was also surprised by how spacious the open-air bath was. The Room felt average for the price, but the food was delicious. However, after learning that the Accommodation we stayed at the night before was part of the same group, I felt this one didn’t offer quite as much value in comparison—but since it’s in popular Kurokawa Onsen, it seemed understandable. The meals were similar to those at the sister property, though with a slightly different menu. This is an Accommodation I would recommend.

    The Timeless Charm of a Traditional Ryokan

    I was able to take a sudden day off and stayed here—every staff member had an amazing smile. The Onsen and the food were both delicious! There are so many different Onsens, and it’s the perfect place to relax. The woman who served our meal was very considerate, and we truly enjoyed dining thanks to her. Thank you. One small disappointment: the drainage in the in-Room bath wasn’t very good. You may want to have it checked, as female guests in particular might notice. That said, this is such a wonderful Ryokan that it more than makes up for it. I’ll be back. Thank you.

    The Onsen

    I was a bit worried about the impact of the earthquake, but I finally visited Kurokawa Onsen, which I had always wanted to see. It truly felt like an Onsen among Onsens, and I was able to relax and unwind. The meals were also delicious, making it a wonderful stay. I couldn’t help noticing the Kumamon sitting at the front desk, and ended up giving it a hug. I’d love to visit again if I have the chance. Thank you very much.

    Exceptional hospitality

    We stayed for one night. The Onsen was wonderful and very relaxing. The meals were delicious, and we really enjoyed chatting with the staff member who took care of us, which made the meal even more enjoyable. Since we were traveling to Nagasaki the next day, we truly appreciated your thoughtful arrangement to serve breakfast earlier. Thanks to you, it became a very fun girls’ trip. After returning home, we heard about the major earthquake in Kumamoto and are very concerned. We are also survivors of the Kobe earthquake 30 years ago, and we still remember how difficult it is without lifelines and how frightening aftershocks can be. We are sending our support from Kobe and hope Kurokawaso and Kumamoto Prefecture will recover as soon as possible. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    We were able to relax to the fullest.

    Completely satisfied in every way. The hot water, the food, and the staff’s hospitality were all beyond reproach. An Accommodation where adults can relax and unwind.

    The retro-style Room...

    The retro-style Room was lovely. The Onsen was gentle on the skin and very nice. However, the corridor to the Room had many stairs and steps, which made it difficult to walk.

    This is a truly wonderful accommodation.

    My spouse and I, a middle-aged couple in our 50s, stayed for one night. The atmosphere (especially the entrance approach), the Facility, the Onsen, and the meals were all wonderful; in particular, we thoroughly enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. Thank you to all the staff.

    We thoroughly enjoyed our two-night stay.

    I chose Kurokawa Onsen because I wanted to enjoy an Onsen while visiting Takachiho in Miyazaki and the Aso area. Thanks to the attentive service, we had a truly heartwarming stay. The tea and sweets provided in the Room and the wide selection of amenities were wonderful, and we were able to relax and fully enjoy both the private family bath and the open-air bath.

    Escape the Hustle

    Stayed here for one night and had a very good experience overall. The staff were helpful and attentive, though it helps to know a little Japanese as English isn’t widely spoken. That said, they were patient and did their best to communicate. The ryokan is about a 10-minute walk from the main shopping area and the onsen-hopping district—far enough to feel peaceful, but close enough to explore easily. The room exceeded expectations: spacious and in a traditional Japanese style. While we were at dinner, the staff laid out the futon on the tatami, which was a nice touch. For the family onsen, reserve a time slot at reception as soon as you check in. The private bath was well maintained and a great way to enjoy the hot spring without the pressure of public bathing. Meals were beautifully presented with generous portions and a full kaiseki-style service. The taste was good rather than outstanding, and the quality of the grilled fish was inconsistent between our two identical sets. Overall, highly recommended for an authentic onsen village stay.

    The Room is old and small.

    The reviews and photos looked very good, but I was disappointed because the current condition was quite different from the photos. The Room was small and old for the price, and I was also disappointed that it had futons. The meals were good, and the bath was average. In the past, Yufuin and Unazuki Onsen (Toyama) Yamanoha were cheaper, with better Rooms and meals. I probably won’t go to Kurokawa Onsen again.

    Unique experience! It was great!

    Stayed in a Western-style Room with Open-Air Bath (Annex). The Room's open-air bath was just the right size or slightly larger for a couple, making it perfect. The view and atmosphere from the bath were amazing. We alternated between soaking and taking breaks to avoid overheating, but it became an unforgettable memory. Thank you!     Enjoy Onsen to the Fullest

    This was my second visit to Kurokawa Onsen. Last time, I stayed at a very luxurious accommodation with a bath so spacious it felt excessive for just two people. At Kurokawasou, the room did not have a private bath, but the private family onsen was excellent. The meals were also delicious and very satisfying. Next time, I would like to stay in a room with an attached bath. Although maintenance must be challenging, the faucet in the washroom seemed loose. For this reason, I would rate the facility 4 stars, but I definitely look forward to staying here again!

    Three-Generation Travel

    We stayed with three generations: 70s, 40s, and a 3-year-old. Although it was a bit away from the Kurokawa Onsen town, it was quiet and relaxing. The meals, both breakfast and dinner, were very delicious with just the right portions—absolutely satisfying. The Onsen was exceptional as expected, with perfect water temperature that made us want to stay in forever. All the staff were kind and attentive, showing thoughtful care throughout our stay. It was our first visit to Kurokawa Onsen, and we were thoroughly satisfied. Thank you for celebrating my mother's birthday as well!

    A truly wonderful accommodation.

    We stayed in a room with an open-air bath for one night as a family of three. The spacious public bath was rarely crowded, and it even had a sauna, allowing us to enjoy an incredibly luxurious time. The quality of the hot spring water was excellent, leaving our skin moisturized even after returning home. The meals were prepared with great care, featuring high-quality ingredients and flavors that were truly satisfying. Although it was a last-minute reservation, we were fortunate to find an available room and are deeply grateful for this opportunity. The staff provided exceptional service throughout our stay—thank you very much. Next time, we hope to stay for several nights. We look forward to another wonderful experience in the future!

    A wonderful accommodation where you can relax at ease.

    The spacious Room was very comfortable, with tasteful furnishings that allowed for a relaxing time. Both the private indoor bath and the open-air bath were spacious enough for two people to enjoy comfortably. Having two washrooms and toilets was also very convenient. The meals, served in a private dining room, were delicious and allowed us to dine without any concerns.

    Excellent

    Everything was clean and we were very satisfied with the Ryokan. The dishes were beautifully presented, each carefully seasoned, and absolutely delicious. The Akaushi beef hot pot and salt-grilled sweetfish were exceptional. The room and interior of the building were designed to incorporate natural rock surfaces beautifully, and the decorations provided a sense of comfort. The view from the Onsen was stunning, and the amenities were well-prepared. The hospitality of everyone truly touched us, making it a relaxing and memorable trip to Kurokawa Onsen. Thank you very much!

    It was excellent!

    We visited for my mother's Kiju celebration trip! My parents were very happy, and I was delighted as well! The food was absolutely delicious. The staff member who assisted us during the meal was from Nepal (apologies if I'm mistaken), and their service and hospitality were very pleasant. I was impressed by how well-trained they were. Although part of the Onsen was under construction, the spacious open-air bath felt almost private depending on the time, allowing us to fully enjoy it. My skin stayed smooth for days afterward! I’m usually quite critical, but this Ryokan is truly wonderful. If there’s one thing that caught my attention, it would be some concerns about bath etiquette from what seemed to be overseas guests—used towels and paper cups left behind in the bathing area. While I believe staff members are already doing extra cleaning, this might have been an issue with Japanese guests in the past too. Hopefully, guests will gradually improve over time. I look forward to visiting again someday. Thank you so much!!

    A wonderful accommodation with great hospitality and excellent value for money.

    I often visit Kurokawa Onsen, and while I’ve felt that the meals at some accommodations didn’t match their luxurious facilities, the meals at Kurokawasou were both beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. For a special celebration, they kindly provided a lovely haori for photos with my family, and I was deeply moved by their heartfelt hospitality. Compared to other accommodations, I believe this place offers excellent value for money and exceptional service.

    Delicious meals and the refreshing experience of a spacious open-air bath to rejuvenate both body and mind.

    We visited as a family of five to celebrate my husband's retirement. When our son arrived in Kumamoto directly from Germany and fell asleep on the lobby sofa due to jet lag, we requested an early check-in, which was kindly accommodated, and we were truly grateful. The view of the fresh greenery from the room's window and the excellence of the open-air bath left a deep impression on us. Additionally, despite this accommodation fee, we were amazed by the high quality of the meals provided. Having stayed at many excellent hotels worldwide and renowned ryokans domestically, our family was astonished by how cost-effective Kurokawa-so is. While some aging in facilities is noticeable, it was completely overshadowed by the delicious meals with beautiful presentation and heartfelt service from the staff. We will definitely visit again!

    Excellent Accommodation

    In June, I stayed for one night with my parents. When I mentioned during a confirmation call that my parents are elderly, at check-in they kindly offered to show us a first-floor room that had become available due to a cancellation. We decided to splurge a little and upgraded to a room with an open-air bath. The Onsen at the accommodation was incredibly relaxing, making me want to stay in forever. The service was excellent, the food was absolutely delicious, and it was worth traveling from Kumamoto all the way to Kurokawa Onsen. Kurokawasou is highly recommended!

    What a pity it was a rainy day.

    I stayed in a detached accommodation. Since I stayed on a day with heavy rain, moving through the spacious garden to the detached accommodation was challenging in the rain. The meals are also excellent, so I would like to stay again on a sunny day.

    Overall, it was a good stay.

    I stayed in a detached room this time and had both positive and concerning experiences. The meals were very delicious, and the baths were all enjoyable. The open-air bath, private bath, and the bath in the room were lovely. The onsen-hopping baths felt like smaller versions of the open-air baths, so I thought the open-air bath for guests was sufficient. What concerned me was that the heating in the room didn’t work well, and the use of the irori (sunken hearth) felt somewhat incomplete. The exclusive bath for those staying in detached rooms seemed unfinished as if it was still under construction. Overall, I feel that more attentive maintenance is needed for these detached accommodations. The reception and guidance felt more like being shown to a cabin at a campsite rather than experiencing an atmosphere of a high-end ryokan. It would have been nice to have thoughtful explanations about things like restrictions on private bath usage or how to use tea facilities in the room or heating systems properly. Since first impressions during check-in can shape one’s image of a ryokan, I believe it’s not just about having good facilities but also providing warm hospitality from start to finish. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed my meals and had a pleasant experience upon departure!

    I made a reservation...

    I made a reservation with high expectations, imagining that Kurokawa-so must be one of the long-established inns in Kurokawa Onsen. While preserving its traditional charm, the maintenance was impeccable. I stayed in a detached Western-style room with a Taisho retro atmosphere, and it was truly lovely. The small heater in the toilet showed thoughtful attention to detail, which I appreciated. The onsen was, of course, excellent, and the meals were delicious as well.

    It was a good Onsen.

    It was a visit in December and during the cold season, but the bath was very nice and the meals were very satisfying at the Stays.
