I’ve stayed in Hakodate and Jozankei a few times, but this was my first time visiting the Akan River. I didn’t know there was no TV available.

The location is excellent, but I’m concerned about the cleanliness.

Above all, I chose this Hotel because I was looking forward to the in-room open-air Onsen bath overlooking the Akan River. However, to be honest, it turned into a very disappointing stay. My biggest concern was the cleaning and maintenance, including the in-room open-air bath. I had been really looking forward to soaking while looking out over the Akan River, but the bathing area was quite small—and more importantly, the window was extremely dirty, making it impossible to enjoy the view. The screen door also showed noticeable dirt and wear. There were spider webs, and two large moths were trapped between the window and the screen. Not only the window but the entire bathroom felt unclean, and in the end I didn’t feel like using the in-room open-air bath I had been so excited about. After that, I used the large public bath area as well, but there were issues there too. It seemed that overflow water from the outdoor bath wasn’t draining properly; about 5 cm of water had pooled near the door back to the indoor bath. To open the door you had to step into that pooled water, and since it appeared connected to water from outside as well, it raised serious hygiene concerns for me. On a positive note, the location truly was wonderful. Through our Room’s large windows we could see wide views of both river and trees. Sitting on a bench with coffee while watching (and listening to) flowing water and swaying branches felt like a real luxury. We even saw deer crossing river and grazing—moments that made me think “I’m glad we stayed here.” I haven’t stayed at any Kyoritsu Resort properties before, but I have stayed many times in other Hotels and Ryokan with Rooms featuring private open-air baths. Even compared with those experiences, I’ve never felt this disappointed by how an in-room bath was cleaned or maintained. I’m not looking for luxury. A small tub is not an issue in itself. But when a Room is designed specifically to overlook Akan River yet dirty windows prevent you from enjoying view—and when entire bathroom lacks sense of cleanliness—that is disappointing regardless of price range. This Hotel seems to promote its Onsen facilities and location as major attractions. That’s exactly why I hope you will thoroughly review cleaning standards and maintenance for these in-room open-air baths.

A Secluded Hotel Surrounded by Nature

This was my first trip to Eastern Hokkaido. The location is, above all, outstanding—rare and truly one of a kind. It feels like there’s nothing that could replace it, and I imagine managing and operating the Hotel must be quite challenging. This time I couldn’t see it from the Hotel, but my son’s family stayed here four years ago as well and said they saw Ezo deer relaxing outside the bath, which made me feel you value and protect nature. Even in the midst of Hokkaido’s great wilderness, this is a properly run Hotel. The Onsen is wonderful. Not only is the water quality excellent, but there is also plenty of hot water, and having free-flowing hot spring water in the Room made me very happy. We were sightseeing this time and weren’t expecting much from the Onsen, so this was a very pleasant surprise. There were a few unexpected issues in my son’s Room, but you changed Rooms for them and handled everything promptly. When we were leaving, the manager even came out personally to apologize. Follow-up when something happens is so important—when you have that kind of support, it makes you want to come back. The only issue we couldn’t resolve was that our Room’s air conditioning was fixed to heating mode, with a note saying to use the window screen if we wanted it cooler. However, because it coincided with a season when large numbers of tiny insects come in through screens, we couldn’t open it. Since I tend to get hot easily, I ended up drenched in sweat at night and couldn’t sleep—it was difficult. My son said their Room had no problem at all, so that part remains a bit of a mystery. Other than that—including meals and cleanliness—I think this is more than good enough as a Hotel. Thank you very much.

    The quiet Onsen is wonderful.

I found this Hotel through the group’s Hotels in Hakone, and was drawn to its riverside atmosphere and the Hotel’s appearance, so I planned my trip with staying here as the main purpose. I stayed here on the first day, and especially loved the Onsen and how the river flows right in front of the Hotel—the greenery of the trees beyond was wonderful and very relaxing. The meals were good, but I think they would be even better with a bit more variety in main dishes and fruit.

An Accommodation where time flows quietly

This was my first time staying here. One of the reasons I chose this Accommodation was that I wanted to spend some quiet time watching the flow of the Akan River rather than staying by Lake Akan. When I arrived at the Hotel, there were no staff around, so the entrance was hard to find and I ended up searching for it. After checking in and heading to my Room, the lighting inside the building was quite dim, so I couldn’t find the elevator right away and felt a bit confused. The Room was spacious enough, and it was wonderful to be able to watch the river from the bench by the window. I also saw wild deer and red foxes, which made it possible to enjoy a peaceful time surrounded by nature. As for bathing, there were three types of private baths, and together with the large public bath you can enjoy different atmospheres. After bathing, being able to have ice cream or Katsugen (a local milk drink) and cool down slowly was also a nice touch. The meals included many dishes—so many that it was almost hard to finish them all. Of course, everything tasted great as well; the seasoning brought out each ingredient’s natural flavor. The staff at the dining venue were extremely polite, which made dining very pleasant. Thank you very much for everything. I’m glad I chose this Accommodation.

    Relaxing time surrounded by nature

The views, the food, and the Onsen were all wonderful—we were very satisfied. Our Room was on the forest side, but we could also see the river. I especially recommend the view from the open-air bath. The close-up scenery of the river and forest never gets old. We even saw deer relaxing nearby. There are private baths as well as a large public bath, and our Room also had Onsen water, so we enjoyed trying different options. The temperature was comfortable for bathing. Afterward, we stayed warm without getting chilled, and our skin felt smooth. Every dish was delicious, with flavorful dashi-based seasoning. It seems like the menu changes by season, so I’d love to visit again. If I had one request, it would be that there is quite a lot of food—so I would appreciate a Plan with smaller portions. This time it was a family member’s birthday, so we chose an anniversary trip Plan. Since I don’t drink alcohol, I asked if the complimentary champagne could be changed to non-alcoholic—thank you very much for accommodating this request. The cake was delicious, they took a photo for us as well which became a great memory, and thank you for the birthday gift too. My family was very happy. This is an Accommodation I would definitely like to visit again.

A Chinese guest entered the open-air bath carrying a camera.

Some foreign guests came in wearing swimsuits, holding cameras, and even brought drinks into the bath for a photo shoot. I assume it was for social media, but there were other guests in the bath as well, and they rushed to grab their bath towels. Unless you take measures to prevent this, I won’t feel safe using the bath.

    A little

We stayed here on the last day of our trip to Hokkaido. The autumn foliage was stunning, and the location was very quiet and pleasant. However, the food did not quite suit our taste, which was a bit disappointing. Additionally, the seating area at the back with stairs was very dimly lit, making it hard to fully appreciate the dishes. While we understand some staff were still in training as indicated by their name tags, many seemed to struggle handling tasks independently; more support from senior staff would be beneficial. In the morning hours, we noticed some guests taking photos in the open-air bath area—this should be addressed for privacy concerns. This is such a wonderful place; we hope improvements will be made for visitors seeking relaxation and comfort.

Enjoyed the autumn foliage. The natural view from the room was amazing. Although, based on other reviews, it seems the view can be hit or miss... Stayed for one night and fell asleep to the soothing sound of the river. **Disappointing Points:** - Upon arrival, I requested a shuttle service, but the driver was unfriendly and didn’t say a single word like “Welcome” or “Thank you.” (Perhaps that’s just their personality?) On top of that, their driving was extremely rough and frightening. As my first contact with the accommodation, this left a bad impression and dampened my excitement right from the start. - As many others have mentioned, meals were quite underwhelming—plenty in quantity but lacking in quality. The main dish being a shared hot pot (just chopping ingredients?) speaks volumes about effort. Service and explanations were slow as well; they seemed understaffed. - Perhaps due to fishing season, there were anglers visible in the river from early morning until sunset—not an ideal sight for relaxation. Naturally, no deer appeared because of human presence by the river. Seeing deer from our room was one of our reasons for choosing this accommodation, so it was disappointing. Despite these criticisms, I’d consider returning someday if staying in this particular room again! Hoping for improvements!

    Quiet and pleasant.

The Room was spacious and clean. The staff's service was polite and excellent. It was delightful to see a deer family relaxing outside while dining at the restaurant. I have stayed at another location of Kyoritsu Resort before, and the consistent concept is outstanding. If available at my travel destination, I would definitely choose to stay again.

A Blissful Onsen Accommodation Surrounded by Nature

Stayed for 2 nights. The spacious 49 sqm room on the riverside with an indoor bath was excellent. The staff were all very efficient, pleasant, and provided extremely courteous service. The meals were all delicious, though dinner portions were a bit too large. I tried both Japanese and Western options for breakfast; however, I felt miso soup wasn't necessary with the Western meal. Overall, it was an exceptional accommodation experience.

    Relaxing Hotel

The view of the river flowing and a few deer playing from the Hotel room allowed us to feel close to nature and was very soothing. The Onsen had excellent water quality and was very relaxing. As for the meals, they were delicious, but it seemed busy with many people around. It was unfortunate that some of the warm dishes were served cold.

If you visit expecting a luxury Hotel, you might feel slightly underwhelmed.

The front staff's service was excellent, and there was nothing particularly unpleasant. However, the photos online were overly appealing, and since it appears in searches for "luxury ryokan," my expectations naturally increased. The room I stayed in was within a reasonable price range, but I didn't feel much of the so-called "luxury hotel" atmosphere in the room, meals, or facility ambiance. This is just my personal opinion, but the private bath also looked different from the images due to aging deterioration.

It wasn't clean, and the staff's service felt more like a convenience store than a Hotel. I was disappointed because I expected a certain level of quality since it was listed on IKYU.

This was my second stay. Last time, due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn't have dinner, so I was looking forward to it this time. However, the quality was unbelievably poor, and the service during meal delivery was subpar. Breakfast was delicious, which made it all the more disappointing. Afterward, I noticed that the dining score on IKYU.com is in the 3-point range and found it understandable.

I chose this place for one of the three nights of my stay after hearing from a friend that the river flowing right in front was refreshing. The response from the front desk staff felt somewhat part-time or temporary in terms of explanations and answers to questions. Dinner was decent, but I think the Western-style breakfast could be simpler, with better ingredients and healthier options. The quality of the Onsen was good, but the Room's bath was too small. I've been enjoying summer trips to Hokkaido every year for several years now, but I felt that the cost performance here was not great.

    The bath is excellent.

Since it was the busy summer season, meals were served by part-time staff, and while there was room for improvement in their language, serving, and clearing manners, it was understandable. Looking at the dinner menu, I was worried if I could finish everything, but the portions were just right. The hot pot with seafood and vegetables was healthy. The dining area felt a bit dim. The open-air bath by the river was amazing; with lukewarm water and a view of the flowing river, I could stay in forever. Without terrestrial TV channels available, it naturally allowed me to forget about city noise and enjoy this quiet accommodation. We visited Kamuy Lumina: Lost Kamuy at Lake Akan from the hotel. During our nighttime drive there, we saw many deer and foxes (though we were nervous about avoiding accidents).

Great location, convenient for nearby sightseeing. The Onsen in the room was comfortable with a beautiful view. In the evening, we saw a deer family, and in the morning, a fox. During our multiple night stay, meals were creatively prepared and enjoyable every day. While understanding the challenges of restaurant seating arrangements, having buffet-style or à la carte meal options would have been even better. Regarding the room, there were signs of aging such as damaged wallpaper, indicating that the facility is slightly dated. I would love to visit again if renovations are made. All staff members were kind and provided attentive service. Thank you very much!

Thank you for your kind service.

Stayed one night with children. Since we arrived in the evening, the only available dinner time was 20:00. The Akan Lake Night Walk started at 19:30, but the staff kindly adjusted our dinner time to 20:40, allowing us to participate. The reception staff were very polite and excellent. The room felt a bit small for five people but was overall clean, with no issues like insects, making it a comfortable stay. The Onsen at 6:00 AM was almost private, and the view from the open-air bath provided a sense of exclusivity and was thoroughly enjoyable. Would love to visit again!

    Thank you very much.

I stayed here for the first time in 7-8 years. The Room was still clean, and the quality of both the meals and service remained excellent. I would love to stay again. Dining while watching the deer was also enjoyable. If I may make one small request, there is a small window near the head of the bed in the bedroom, and for us who usually wake up late, it was a bit tough as the Room became bright early in the morning. It would be great if you could put curtains on that small window to adjust the brightness. Lastly, Ms. T., one of your new female staff members, had a wonderful smile! Please keep up your great work!

    The hot spring was wonderful.

The view from the Room was great, and I had a relaxing time. However, none of the windows could be opened. Although the river flows right in front, you cannot hear any sound or refresh the air. I felt that the meals could be improved by reconsidering the ingredients a bit more. Thank you for your hospitality.

    The location and bui...

The location and building themselves are fine. I enjoyed encountering deer at the Onsen and also had a great time in the sauna. **About the Room** I chose a river-side room expecting a good view, but the room I was guided to had a large roof right below, with many dead insects like moths. While I understand this might be inevitable in nature, I felt uneasy knowing that rooms further down from mine had better views for the same price. **About Meals** I was seated at a counter where dozens of moths were flying around. As for the meals I was looking forward to—both dinner and breakfast—they were disappointing... I've always been fond of Kyoritsu Maintenance properties, including Dormy Inn and Nono Ryokan across various locations, which have always been excellent until now. This is my first time feeling this way. Though I rarely leave comments, I'm writing this hoping for improvements.

    The meals were disappointing.

Dinner lacked standout dishes, with a very small portion of sashimi and cold tempura served despite the wait, leaving us disappointed. For breakfast, although we were informed in advance about the wait time and didn’t mind waiting, the food was served cold, which was also disappointing. We would have appreciated warm dishes being served warm. While the Onsen, service, and room were all excellent, it was unfortunate that we couldn’t be satisfied with the meals. We strongly request improvements in this area.

The Onsen had excellent water quality and provided a very pleasant bathing experience. However, the private bath on the east side was small, which was disappointing. Additionally, the breakfast venue was crowded, resulting in a 45-minute wait for food service, which affected our subsequent schedule.

Better than the shores of Lake Akan

I have stayed here before and enjoyed the abundance of nature, so I used it again. What concerned me was that while the staff at dinner were attentive, the morning staff could hardly explain the meal (it seemed like they didn't remember the words they should explain) and there was no explanation about the self-service drinks at all... I thought it was quite amateurish as they almost forgot to serve the meal plate and rice. Since the self-service drinks are in the middle of the seating area, you can't access them without an explanation, so I wish they wouldn't forget at least this... When I stayed before, there was orange juice and milk, so I looked around and, as expected (I saw the person next to me go to get it), I went to get it myself... There is a shortage of staff everywhere, but it was frustrating from the morning. Also, the hot pot at night and the pot-au-feu in the morning were not great. I thought the same during my previous stay; it's a shame because everything else is good, but the taste and ingredients are not satisfying.

They say it's just a river and Onsen, but the relaxation is extraordinary.

This is my second visit. I was very impressed when I first visited two years ago, and I was finally able to make my long-awaited return this time. As always, the onsen with its natural hot spring water was warm and comforting, the view of the river flowing nearby was beautiful, and this time, I was able to see an amazing starry sky. I was so moved by the brightness and size of the stars that I could hardly sleep. Regarding the meals, dinner was delicious, but I think there is still room for improvement with breakfast... I would prefer not to have pre-prepared dishes and to have hot dishes served hot; that was the only disappointment. The staff were very pleasant, and I think it's truly wonderful that they have prepared many services to delight the guests. I am also very satisfied with the benefits of the Diamond membership. Even though I was so moved by the starry sky that I could hardly sleep and was exhausted the next day, this place is a healing stay for our family. I would love to visit again. Thanks to you, it was a wonderful trip. Thank you very much.

    The meals were disappointing.

I used this accommodation on the last day of my trip to Hokkaido. The surroundings are enveloped in nature, and I was satisfied with the clean room and the opportunity to see deer during meals. The only disappointment was the dinner. The number of dishes was limited, and while they seemed to be of good quality, I wished for a menu that made me feel more glad to have come here. It felt a bit like ready-made food. It's a shame because the environment is so nice. People from nearby tourist spots also mentioned this, and I thought that if this point were improved, its popularity would increase.
