    Exceptional hospitality

Although the building is old, it is very well cleaned and the hospitality is excellent, so I think this is an Accommodation you can be truly satisfied with. It was also fun and nostalgic to be able to contact the front desk using a telephone you don’t see these days—perhaps making good use of the property’s vintage charm. One small thing: the yukata brought to me because the size didn’t fit had a slight odor that concerned me a bit. That said, I may simply be overly sensitive. In any case, the service is outstanding, and every staff member provided wonderful hospitality. I was deeply impressed by their thoughtful attention to detail. By chance there was a festival that day and we were able to watch fireworks; they even told us the best viewing spot, which made it a great memory. Thank you very much. As for the meals, the rice was cooked perfectly and delicious. The side dishes were excellent as well, but especially how good the rice was stood out. One suggestion: if the green onions in the breakfast miso soup could be lightly cooked in advance, then warming it at the table would make it even tastier—I felt they sometimes didn’t cook through enough with table heating alone. Still, overall everything was extremely delicious. This is an Accommodation I will definitely want to stay at again when I visit Kaminoyama Onsen.

    Relax and unwind

It was a cozy, home-like Accommodation. The Room also had a private indoor bath, so we could soak whenever we liked and truly relax; both the cuisine and the tableware were a delight, making our stay very fulfilling. At night, perhaps because there were few streetlights, we could see the stars beautifully. In the morning, the view of Mt. Gassan and the surrounding mountains from the indoor bath was wonderful, and it made me think that Kaminoyama Onsen might actually mean “Onsen of the Gods’ Mountain.”

    The food is delicious!

This was my second visit. I really enjoyed both the meals and the bath in the Room! I was hoping to enjoy a bath while it was snowing, but it was unseasonably warm, which was a bit disappointing. Still, I’d like to visit Hayamakan again. As I mentioned last year as well, I’d be happy if coffee were available until around 8:00 PM at night when I feel like having some. I also don’t think the vending machine had hot coffee. The food and service are great, so I’d love to come again. Thank you very much.

    What a kind Ryokan!

I have stayed in Kaminoyama many times, but this was my first visit to this Ryokan. It is a wonderful place. I was very pleased with the kind service during breakfast and dinner. The shuttle service driver, lounge staff, and others also provided warm hospitality. I already have a reservation for January, so I would love to visit again in February or March. This Ryokan truly lives up to its reputation. I'm happy to add another Ryokan that I can repeatedly visit. Thank you very much!

    I had a relaxing time.

I have used this place several times, and this time I stayed for a family trip during Obon. The food was delicious, and I ended up enjoying more drinks than usual. The rice was also very tasty. The Room's bath was excellent as well. The lounge offering coffee and Calpis after bathing was perfect!

The photos and the Room are too different.

The room felt quite old upon entering, possibly because the photos were taken right after renovation. There was a musty smell as soon as I walked in, which was off-putting. The limited power outlets meant I had to charge my phone and PC in different places. The table was too small for two people to enjoy tea together, and the chair had a small footrest that seemed intended for relaxation but wasn’t practical at all—I ended up spending most of my time on the bed. From the bed, it was impossible to see the small TV placed on top of the refrigerator, so I resorted to watching videos and news on my phone like I do at home. The Onsen in the room offered a nice view; however, during daylight or with lights on at night, it seemed completely visible from outside. Meals were served in a private dining room by attentive staff. A young Japanese woman noticed that my husband’s feet were large and brought him more comfortable footwear instead of tight slippers—her thoughtfulness left an impression. On the other hand, another young female staff member who appeared to be foreign struggled with Japanese and couldn’t explain any of the dishes properly. She also seemed unfamiliar with proper serving etiquette; plates and rice bowls were placed haphazardly. Each time she made a mistake, she repeatedly said “Gomenne,” which surprised me—it likely meant “I’m sorry.” While her effort was commendable and not unpleasant overall (I even felt like cheering her on), some guests might find communication issues frustrating if they don’t speak her language fluently. As for the food itself—the highlight of any Ryokan stay—it missed its mark entirely from start to finish: nothing tasted good at all. For example: corn namul made simply by mixing canned corn with sesame oil (disappointing), sashimi served flatly arranged at an unappetizing lukewarm temperature, Yamagata beef steak accompanied by what looked like pre-packaged supermarket salad or worse quality than that if possible! Dining is supposed to be one of Onsen Ryokan's main attractions; paying money only for meals less enjoyable than homemade ones feels unacceptable—improvement is strongly needed here!

The staff's service was excellent, but I felt a bit disappointed.

I stayed in Room 703 of Fuyoutei, which features an open-air bath, a natural hot spring view bath, and a footbath. I usually stay at the neighboring accommodation but decided to make a reservation here this time. From the moment I arrived, the staff's service was excellent—they helped with my luggage and guided me smoothly to my room. However, there were some disappointing aspects. The view of the Zao mountains from the room was stunning, but the room layout made it so that when sitting on the chairs to relax, you end up facing a wall instead of enjoying the scenery. Additionally, while soaking in the view bath with its incredible mountain views was delightful, I noticed that the roll screen on the glass partition window was heavily moldy and unappealing to touch. This dampened my enjoyment of what should have been a relaxing experience. If mold is an issue, it might be better to remove such screens altogether. Furthermore, when resting on the bed, there was an unpleasant smell coming from somewhere—it turned out to be from one of the pillows. It had a faint sweaty odor that made it difficult for me to sleep well at night. While it seemed like pillow covers were properly washed and ironed, it felt as though odors had seeped into the pillow itself over time. Even small issues like these can add up and leave guests feeling disappointed overall. As this is an established ryokan with fond memories from childhood family trips here being part of why I chose this place again for my stay—I must admit I'm hesitant about returning in future visits unless improvements are made. That said—the staff’s hospitality truly stood out positively! The lounge where you can read books was also fantastic! Since I opted for a no-dinner plan during booking reservations cannot comment much regarding meals except breakfast tasted fine yet nothing extraordinary either

    Great value and delicious meals.

I booked this for my parents and friends, and they were very pleased with the delicious meals, great bath, and kind service. The only downside was the slight steps here and there (as they are over 70 years old). They mentioned that having handrails in the bath area would be helpful. Also, they found it a bit difficult to locate the switch or mechanism to flush the toilet. Perhaps an initial explanation or a clear instruction poster in the restroom would help? The good points: The room was spacious, and since it was one man and three women staying together, they appreciated being moved to a room that could be separated—thank you for accommodating this! They also enjoyed the meals very much. When we informed you that someone didn’t like raw fish, you kindly provided an alternative menu—thank you for your effort! My father loves Onsen baths, so he especially enjoyed the natural flowing hot spring water and bathed four times—it was perfect for him. The price was reasonable as well, and its proximity to a shop offering all-you-can-pick cherries made it even more convenient—they were delighted about this too. Thank you so much for taking care of us!

    Everyone was polite and kind.

I have fond memories of staying at the annex of Hayamakan with my family when it first opened, so I made a Reservation for my retired parents. Since the former annex had become Shikitei, I Reserved a room there to stay in that memorable place. Upon arrival, the front desk informed us that they had prepared a slightly larger Room of the same type, so I assumed it was in Shikitei. However, we were guided to Hanayoutei instead. While I truly appreciated their thoughtful consideration for our group of three, it was a bit disappointing as we had specifically Reserved Shikitei due to its sentimental value and because my elderly parents would benefit from having chairs available there. I regret not noting this in the remarks section when making the Reservation. The staff were all very kind and welcoming with their smiles—thank you for your hospitality! My apologies if this feedback seems harsh despite your kindness. Even though it wasn’t exactly as planned, I’m glad we could stay at Hayamakan again and relive some cherished memories.

Accommodation with Natural Hot Spring Flow

The room's bath offers a great view, and the hot spring water is automatically replenished every time it overflows, allowing for a relaxing soak at any time. Meals, served in private rooms both in the morning and evening, feature dishes made with Yamagata ingredients and were all deliciously finished. Choosing this accommodation was a great decision. I will revisit if I have another chance to go to Yamagata.

    I visit this accommo...

I visit this accommodation several times a year with my elderly parents. The room features an indoor bath with Onsen water, and the short distance to the dining area makes it ideal for my parents, who have difficulty walking. They truly enjoy staying here. Relaxing in the bath while gazing at the Zao Mountain Range or soaking in a footbath with a drink in hand is one of its many charms. This time, we requested local tempura made from tara buds on short notice, and it turned out to be an incredibly delicious dish. Of course, all other meals were also excellent and thoughtfully prepared to be easy for elderly guests to eat, which we greatly appreciated. We look forward to staying again this autumn!

    I made a mistake.

The ryokan seems to have been renovated, but the interior felt like a maze. The room had a musty smell and was very unpleasant. The open-air bath attached to the room resembled a coffin, making it completely unappealing to use—perhaps it would be better without it. As for the food, keeping it simple and traditional would suffice since this is an onsen ryokan. While reviews mentioned that being able to choose the main dish was nice, I think focusing more effort on other aspects would be appreciated even if there’s only one main dish option.

An accommodation perfect for a multiple night stay.

My first trip to Yamagata Onsen. There were several accommodation options, but the deciding factor was the footbath. I’m so glad I chose this place. The onsen in the room was spacious enough for two adults to relax comfortably, but the footbath was truly exceptional! I thought it would be wonderful to stay for a multiple night stay, immerse myself in the footbath, and enjoy the ever-changing views of Mount Zao from morning till evening. The gently falling snow added a touch of elegance and made it even more breathtaking. The meals were abundant and delicious—so much that I couldn’t finish everything! Both dinner and breakfast were thoroughly enjoyable. Additionally, having coffee served in an insulated mug at the library lounge was a delightful surprise. I brought it back to my room and enjoyed it while soaking in the footbath at my leisure. All of the staff members were incredibly kind and welcoming, providing excellent hospitality. Thank you very much! This is such a wonderful accommodation that I’d love to come back for a multiple night stay next time!

    The meals are excellent!

I stayed at this Ryokan for the first time for two nights! I have been coming to Kaminoyama Onsen every year, and I plan to make a reservation again next time. The room's bath was nice, and the meals were delicious, allowing me to relax. All the staff were very pleasant.

    The all-meat course ...

The all-meat course was too greasy for those in their 50s, causing heartburn. Additionally, there were stink bugs in the dining area and spider webs in some places, which was disappointing. Nevertheless, the private open-air bath in the guest room was so wonderful that it made up for it, and I would like to stay again.

    The meals are excellent.

For dinner, each person could choose from three types of meat or fish, and every dish had a gentle and delicious flavor. The timing of the dishes was perfect, and we were very full. Breakfast also had a wide variety of side dishes, and we finished all the rice from the pot. We stayed in a Room with a bath, and we used it many times. However, there were stains on the ceiling here and there, which was a bit disappointing given how lovely the entrance and dining area were.

    The meals were simply amazing.

We stayed at Shikitei with our one-year-old child. Although it was a bit old, the room was spacious enough, and our child was happily running around on the tatami mats. I believe they had removed some of the room items in advance for the child's safety. The staff were very kind to our child, and I felt it was a family-friendly property. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a private room, which I recommend for families with small children. Sometimes, even in semi-private rooms, you have to be considerate, but having a fully private room was great. The Yamagata beef course for dinner was incredibly delicious and wonderful. I have stayed at the neighboring property just up the hill, but personally, the satisfaction level was completely different. I was happy and full with Yamagata beef. One point, during breakfast, a trainee brought our food but accidentally broke some dishes at the entrance. My husband seemed to have stepped on a shard due to insufficient cleaning (fortunately, he wasn't injured). It's understandable since they are in training, but I hope the cleaning can be done thoroughly.
