I finally got to visit Shirahone Onsen and soak in its milky-white waters. The meals and the hospitality/service were just right, and I had an even better time than expected.

This was my first time staying here.

This was my first time staying at Shirahone Onsen. Given the staffing shortage, I think it would be helpful to more actively introduce systems that encourage self-service—for example, placing call bells and water in the dining area. In many situations, a brief note or explanation would make things clear. The Onsen atmosphere was excellent, just as reputed.

I can’t wait to soak in that bath again.

This was my first return in eight years. I had been hoping to visit that bath again someday, and chose this Accommodation because it is close to the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway, our destination. The amazake and oyaki served at check-in were delicious. I wanted to buy some to take home, but they said they are not for sale, which was very disappointing. (I also couldn’t find them at the roadside station they recommended.) Compared with before, the dining area has been updated with tables and chairs, and the meals also felt upgraded. The attendants were all Japanese and provided courteous service. The open-air bath is now by reservation, so it was nice not having to go check for availability. To reach Zaboan and the baths, you need to climb a long staircase, which may be difficult for guests with mobility issues. I recommend staying at Zaboan while you are still able-bodied. Since this is a standalone house-style Accommodation, it would be nice if there were a vending machine on site.

    The bath is amazing! However...

I had high expectations for this accommodation as it was a place I had always wanted to stay, which made the disappointment even greater. I stayed at the end of November, on a day when snow had accumulated. Even after changing into a yukata, the provided jacket was a thin summer-style haori. According to the accommodation, they have winter versions but hadn't started offering them yet. As there was no other option, I wore my own down jacket while moving around inside the facility. To reach the detached building, there were long stairs with stoves placed along the way; however, none of them were lit. When we arrived slightly early for dinner time, we were told that preparations weren't complete and asked to wait in a lounge area where again no stove was lit—leaving us shivering as we waited. The meal itself left no lasting impression on me. While I understood it was an old building beforehand, there were stairs everywhere you went—it might be challenging for those with weak legs or knees. The private bath was absolutely wonderful; however, I wouldn't return just for that experience alone.

    It was a bit cold.

Stayed for the first night of a 3-night, 4-day trip in late October. Check-in starts at 3 PM; we arrived a bit early but were not allowed to enter the accommodation until the designated time. There was no staff present, and a notice explaining this was posted. At check-in time, we proceeded to our room, which was in a separate building. The main bath is located up a long and gentle staircase from the main building, and further up another set of stairs via an exclusive corridor for guests staying in the separate accommodations. This might be challenging for those with weak legs or mobility issues. The room itself is an old historical house that has been relocated? We expected it to be cold but were pleasantly surprised by underfloor heating that kept it warm inside. However, there was quite a bit of dust under the bed and other areas, so cleanliness could have been better. The private open-air onsen bath was smaller than expected but still enjoyable. Dinner had a homely mountain village feel to it, while breakfast offered options like onsen porridge which we appreciated. This visit fulfilled my long-time wish to stay at Sasa-ya in Shirahone Onsen—a place different from where I usually stay—evoking nostalgic memories of childhood trips with my parents. P.S.: Although it was already quite cold during our stay, temperatures dropped below freezing the next day. Despite having stoves along the long corridor mentioned earlier, they were not lit even though they were installed there for warmth purposes—it felt very cold as adjusting them ourselves wasn’t an option due to safety concerns with fire equipment. Perhaps this happened because it was only late October? Still, I would have appreciated more appropriate measures based on weather conditions at that time!

Relaxed and rejuvenated at Shirahone Onsen.

We chose this accommodation as a place to stay before heading to Kamikochi the next day. It is located up a narrow mountain path. The bamboo leaf tea available anytime was a nice touch. The onsen had a strong sulfur smell and, true to its name, the water was milky white and free-flowing from the source. The warmth lingered even after bathing, making it very relaxing. The long-formed white bathtub was unique and had a great atmosphere, but I felt that the height when entering could be slightly dangerous if not careful. Meals were made with local ingredients and were delicious; however, I thought an additional dish like grilled fish would have been nice. If I have another chance to visit, I would love to stay here again.

    Amazing bath!

We stayed as a family of four with my parents. The staff were very kind, and the meals were delicious. The relocated traditional house Room was also very comfortable. Above all, the quality of the Onsen and the atmosphere of the baths were exceptional. The private bath had an artistic ambiance, and the large public bath had a charming atmosphere. This is No. 1 among all the Onsens I have visited so far! Thank you very much.

    The Onsen was excellent.

I stayed in a separate accommodation, but there were many stairs, making it a bit challenging to move around with large luggage. As others have mentioned, the meals were quite disappointing, not served in private rooms and felt not worth the cost. At night, it was clear there was a shortage of staff, causing delays in dinner service and long waiting times. The glass doors were closed, possibly as an insect measure, so it wasn't an open-air bath as shown in the photos; however, the hot water was excellent.

The lowest-priced accommodation in this range.

As the title suggests. For two people with breakfast and dinner included, it might be barely acceptable if it's under 40,000 yen and less than half price. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were the bare minimum. I won't go into details... Including all aspects such as service, there was no sense of identity or character as a Ryokan. It felt like everything—reception, cooking, and customer service—was left to part-time staff (not blaming the part-timers). The Onsen itself was excellent but made it all the more disappointing. However, the water is a unique milky bath typical of Shirahone Onsen with deep tubs where you can't see the bottom due to its cloudiness. The upper sides of the bathtub have significant mineral deposits from the Onsen water's scale buildup. Please be cautious when bathing to avoid injury; always hold onto handrails when entering for safety reasons.

    Thank you very much.

It was a great trip. The bath, Ryokan size, hospitality, atmosphere, and location were all excellent. The bath was especially wonderful. However, transportation can be challenging if traveling with elderly people. I would love to visit again.

    A Serene Hot Spring

Drawn by the beauty of the photos of Sasaya's open-air bath, I visited Shirahone Onsen for the first time. The Onsen I had been looking forward to was at a perfect temperature and very relaxing, and the meals were delicious. Waiting leisurely for the bus at Sawatari Bus Terminal and enjoying the quiet environment of Shirahone Onsen allowed me to truly unwind and forget about my usual hectic daily life. Thank you very much.

    Unfortunately.

I revisited after a long time, but it was significantly different from before. Instead of focusing on local production for local consumption, they now use seafood despite being in the mountains, making it feel like an ordinary Ryokan. It would have been better to enjoy the typical local cuisine. Perhaps the absence of a service manager is related to this change. The service itself was good, which made it all the more disappointing.

The bath was very pleasant with soothing hot water. The private bath, which required a reservation, was also easy to use and enjoyable. I had high expectations for the food based on reviews, but it felt like something homemade by the hostess? For this price, the dinner and breakfast were disappointing and not worth it. When I asked about the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway at checkout, I was told to ask the staff at the station directly. The response was so curt that it left me quite surprised.

    A Warm and Welcoming Accommodation

Stayed here after a trip to Kamikochi. It was the height of summer just after Obon. Around 4:30 PM at check-in, the room felt warm with sunlight streaming in, and I was initially concerned about the lack of air conditioning. However, after taking a bath and as the sun set, the temperature dropped significantly, and with just a fan, it became very comfortable. At night, I slept soundly under the futon. In the morning, I woke up refreshed to the cheerful chirping of bush warblers and enjoyed a hot cup of coffee—concluding that air conditioning is indeed unnecessary. It was my first time staying here, but based on reviews from several years ago regarding meals, it seems there might have been changes in content or quality over time. Personally, I enjoyed the gentle flavors of their dishes and homemade miso soup; however, opinions may vary depending on individual preferences. I also read a book about traditional house restoration placed in the room—it conveyed the owner's passion for building this accommodation and resonated deeply with me. Considering factors like maintaining this location and building costs makes it difficult to evaluate whether accommodation fees are reasonable or not. The quality of the onsen water and bath location speaks for itself without needing further explanation. This accommodation offers an extraordinary yet simple experience that embraces you like everyday life—a truly unique stay!

The best Onsen, a natural and relaxing Accommodation

We used the "Room Assignment Plan" for couples and were delighted to stay in a beautiful room called "Kochou," located a bit away from the main area. The traditional house was impeccably clean, polished to perfection, and comfortable to walk barefoot. For those who prefer slippers, there were high-quality leather ones that were very comfortable, which showed thoughtful attention to detail. The room did not have air conditioning but was cool and comfortable with just a fan. The fresh greenery outside the window was stunning. The highlight of our stay was the onsen. We initially entered the large public bath without realizing that it could be turned into a semi-open-air bath by fully opening the windows. Even through the glass, we enjoyed vibrant green forest views and watched sapphire-blue butterflies fluttering like something out of a fantasy world. The deep bathtub surrounded by layers of pure white limestone felt like being in an infinity pool—a truly relaxing experience for all senses with exceptional water quality. The only disappointment was with the private open-air bath reservation system. After our first use, we were told we could use it again if there were openings; however, since we checked in late, only late-night slots after dinner were available for us. The next morning's slots had already been booked as we had an early departure. It would have been better if reservations for second uses opened only after everyone had their first turn or if some priority adjustments based on schedules or shorter time slots in the morning could be considered. While one visit alone was satisfying enough (and I don't mean to sound greedy), my husband couldn't join during our reserved time due to feeling unwell—leaving me wishing he could have experienced such an amazing bath too. All staff members provided excellent hospitality that made our stay very comfortable. Meals weren't overly extravagant but felt healthy and showcased natural ingredients beautifully prepared—perfectly portioned for someone like me who doesn't eat large amounts—and absolutely delicious. Next time, I hope to plan a more relaxed schedule so I can fully enjoy everything this wonderful accommodation has to offer! Thank you for such a lovely experience!

    First Time at Shirahone Onsen

I experienced Shirahone Onsen for the first time, and the strong sulfur scent made it feel truly unique. The building is old, but it was very clean and provided a relaxing atmosphere. Even though it was summer, it was pleasantly cool, with birds and insects adding to the mountain charm. Overall, this accommodation was wonderful; the staff were kind, and the service was delightful. I had a slight dissatisfaction with the meal content, but that might vary by personal preference... Thank you for allowing me to spend such a fulfilling time!

Excellent hot springs! However, the service could be better for the price...

Stayed for a Multiple Night Stay in the detached "Tsubaki" room. The quality of the Onsen water and the ambiance were excellent, and it was relaxing to enjoy the view of birch trees from the room. The cool climate during the intense heat was very comfortable and satisfying. However, amenities and services were somewhat disappointing considering the price range. There were no drinks available in the lobby, no water provided at the Onsen, and tea along the way to the bath was often not chilled or unavailable for extended periods. There was also no coffee offered after breakfast. Additionally, there were no cotton pads in either the changing area or room—only cotton swabs available in the changing area. It seems that guests staying for multiple nights are rare; on our second day, staff were absent during midday hours when Onsen use was not allowed (no private baths available either as our room did not have its own bath). The meals may have been appropriately portioned without being too heavy but lacked any standout dishes; many items appeared pre-made. While this might be acceptable for a casual Ryokan experience, it felt lacking in value for money at this level. While great as a retreat from summer heat with enjoyable Onsen facilities, unfortunately, I cannot recommend it for a Multiple Night Stay.

The stay was peaceful, and the Onsen was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the Onsen porridge served at breakfast. Dinner consisted of small portions of delicious dishes, which allowed me to finish everything and feel satisfied. While not extraordinary, the food was very tasty overall. I was generally satisfied with my stay; however, one issue stood out—there were many ants in the room from early morning, which made me uncomfortable. Although it’s understandable given the mountain location, their number was unsettling.

    The Onsen is wonderful.

Stayed at Shirahone Onsen after decades. The sulfur Onsen was amazing. The limestone around the bath gave a sense of history. The view from the room, with beautiful birch forests, was stunning. Dinner was thoughtfully prepared. Although I arrived early, I wish I could have at least entered the building even if check-in to the room wasn’t possible yet.

An Onsen Like a Work of Art

I frequently visited the Onsen areas of Hirayu, Fukuchi, and Nakao across the Abo Pass, but this time I decided to stay at Konashi no Yu Sasaya in Shirahone. The road from Sawando was narrow and steep in parts, making it a challenging drive, but it was worth the effort. (I even saw several cyclists climbing that steep slope on road bikes!) Upon arrival at the accommodation, I was promptly greeted at the entrance and offered Kuma-sasa tea (an acquired taste but enjoyable once accustomed) while receiving an explanation of the facilities. To reach my room in a relocated traditional house annex, I had to climb another long staircase—but it all made sense when I saw the view from my room. The sight of Mount Norikura through birch trees was breathtaking and something you could gaze at endlessly. The most unforgettable aspect of Sasaya is its Onsen. The main bath features a cypress tub transformed by lime deposits into something reminiscent of China's Jiuzhaigou World Heritage Site—a white tub filled with milky blue-white water that feels like art itself. The private open-air baths are also covered with lime deposits on their rock surfaces, offering a unique bathing experience unlike any other I've had before. It seems day-use bathing is currently unavailable—likely to preserve its pristine condition—which seems like a wise decision. The private reservation system using wooden tags is well thought out; despite being there on a weekend, I could enjoy multiple baths during available slots. The staff were courteous yet approachable, creating an atmosphere where I felt comfortable throughout my stay. This is definitely an accommodation I'd love to visit again!

The bath was absolutely amazing! There were separate indoor and open-air baths, both free to use. The open-air bath, surrounded by birch trees and lingering snow, offered a unique experience with its cloudy hot spring water and no enclosures—truly unforgettable. The meals were also excellent, featuring local ingredients with great seasoning. The white rice and miso soup were outstanding! However, the front desk closes at 9 PM, and there was no explanation about emergency procedures. This is something that could be improved in the future, especially since there was a magnitude 5 earthquake during our stay.

The hot water is simply amazing.

I stayed for two nights. I finally managed to stay at the long-awaited Sasaya, a rare environment surrounded by wonderful onsen and great nature, a secluded single Stays. It is said that the old folk house, which is the owner's family home, was relocated and renovated, but it is equipped with underfloor heating, towel heaters in the washroom and toilet, and the changing room of the large bath is kept warm. I received plenty of effort and hospitality on how to warmly welcome guests in a cold and harsh environment. The Room and the inside of the Property were kept clean. Even though it was in the mountains, the meals were delicious, and it was too much for me, who eats little, so I had one plate reduced on the second day. The staff responded at a good distance, chatted with me, and I was able to spend a pleasant time. It was a memorable two days. Thank you very much. I reduced one "customer service" as a suggestion for future improvement. I think it is a very rare case for someone like me to come alone by bus and stay for two nights, but I was troubled by the lunch on the second day. I was in a situation where I might have to skip lunch. Since it is a secluded place, it would be appreciated if you could provide a light lunch like rice balls. Even if you inform us in advance, it is difficult to bring a lunch for the next day. It seems that others come by car, so they don't seem to have trouble, but it is impossible for me to walk up and down the mountain road for 1 km, so I was in trouble. This time, I made an unreasonable request and you responded, but I would like to visit again, so I would appreciate it if you could take some measures. Also, I would be happy if there was a vending machine. I have written various requests, but I am grateful that you have overcome the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic and are continuing in your original form. I hope you will continue to protect the precious onsen. I will definitely visit again, so thank you in advance.

This is my first time at Shirahone Onsen. It is a famous hot spring as rumored. I was healed by the Onsen during my two-night stay. The humidity in the room was high, and there were more stairs to the detached building than I expected. The meals were slightly disappointing.
