    Thank you for a wonderful time.

    We had a truly wonderful time. The homemade-style meals, the thoughtfully prepared Room and space, and the open-air bath while listening to the sound of the waves were all exceptional. The all-inclusive plan was very satisfying. And we were deeply moved by the former proprietress’s storytelling. It reminded us to feel grateful once again for being alive—being allowed to live—here and now. Thank you very much. This is a highly recommended Accommodation.

    New Year Family Trip

    Looking forward to our first family trip of the New Year The stunning sea right in front of us, with the sound of waves amplified by the terrain, was truly amazing. While gazing at the ocean, I shared stories with my daughter about the time of the disaster—it was hard to believe this was the same sea that had raged during that time. The Ryokan has undergone remarkable restoration, which is wonderful to see. While conditions were well-prepared, there were issues with food quality, service, and unclear warnings directed at children during dinner? It wasn’t us causing trouble; it should have been directed at a group of four unruly adults next to us who broke glasses and created a commotion. We will not be returning.

    Dinner was satisfying, but breakfast was somewhat lacking. Although it is all-inclusive, I was slightly disappointed as I do not drink alcohol.

    It was excellent.

    I reserved a room with an open-air bath. However, due to the cold weather, I couldn't use the bath, which was unfortunate! Still, the room was spacious, clean, and very relaxing. As a couple in our 70s, we were delighted that both dinner and breakfast were served as set meals. The ryokans we stayed at 3 and 2 days prior had buffet-style meals for both dinner and breakfast, which felt hectic with people constantly walking behind us—quite disappointing. Houraikan is not a large ryokan but offers an opportunity to listen to stories from earthquake storytellers and provides thoughtful hospitality—a truly wonderful place to stay.

    First-ever five-star satisfaction rating!

    After the match at Unosumai Reconstruction Stadium, I called multiple times to ask how to get to the Ryokan, causing some inconvenience. Despite not having made a reservation for the shuttle bus, you kindly picked me up at Unosumai Station, which was very helpful. The room was spacious and clean, and the Onsen water was at a comfortable temperature. Dinner was excellent, featuring local sashimi and other delicious dishes. The portion size was just right—not overwhelming—which I appreciated. The landlady's storytelling about the earthquake disaster allowed me to relive those moments while learning new aspects of the area, making it an invaluable experience. Although it left me slightly emotional in the morning, I wondered if hearing it in the evening might have been better timing for me personally. If I had one suggestion, it would be regarding room lighting. With only direct ceiling lights (which were glaring when looking up) that could only be turned on or off for the entire room at once, having even one desk lamp or indirect lighting option would improve comfort greatly. I hope to have another opportunity to visit again!

    First, the sandy beach, the sound of waves, the bath, the Room, and the atmosphere are all excellent. However, more than that, I believe it is the spirit of the storyteller hostess that makes it truly special. Now celebrating its 15th year—don't miss this opportunity!

    A Trip to Kamaishi You'll Want to Visit Again

    It has been 14 years since that day, and I was finally able to visit Kamaishi. Although the bus from Morioka was delayed by nearly 30 minutes, causing me to miss the shuttle bus, I contacted the Hotel and the former landlady (now an advisor) kindly came to pick me up right away. Feeling anxious in an unfamiliar place, her warm smile was a great comfort. The Hotel is clean, quiet, and very relaxing. The meals were all delicious (especially the grilled Setta Karei fish—it was exceptional), and the local sake "Hamachidori" from Kamaishi complemented them perfectly. After dinner, guests can listen to free storytelling about experiences during the earthquake disaster—a valuable and deeply moving account filled with reality. The next morning, I visited Nebama Beach right in front of the Hotel. The calm blue sea stretched out before me with gentle sounds of waves soothing my soul. The heartfelt hospitality of all staff made this trip truly unforgettable. This is a Hotel I would love to visit again next time with my wife!

    It was a satisfying accommodation.

    The location is excellent, with the sea right in front of the accommodation, making evening walks very pleasant. (I didn't try it myself, but I imagine mornings would be great too.) The staff were incredibly kind; when we asked if they had a cardboard box to send our luggage, they opened up a package delivered to the accommodation and provided us with one, which was truly appreciated. The meals were delightful, featuring fresh seafood that left us amazed. Among them, the abalone sashimi was tender and delicious, and we were surprised by how large and meaty the grilled flounder was—it alone felt like enough to fill us up. The all-inclusive feature with free drinks including alcohol was also very appealing. There was a wide variety of beverages available as well. At night, there was an insightful storytelling session about past earthquakes by what seemed to be a former proprietress? It turned out to be an educational experience as well. This is definitely an accommodation I would love to visit again!

    The front desk staff were very polite and provided excellent service. However, the dinner service staff were extremely disappointing. Their behavior significantly lowers the rating of this Hotel. Regarding the fish served at dinner: The tuna had changed color, and there was also butterfish and amberjack. Was it really local amberjack? I’m not sure if the chef told the staff that, but one of them informed me it was local amberjack from Iwate. If such fatty amberjack can be caught locally in Iwate, I’d like to know your supplier as I’d like to purchase some myself. This seems like a case of mislabeling its origin. Also, is it your policy to clear away partially eaten meals just because you want to serve dessert? Are you trying to rush guests so they leave quickly? There’s something wrong with how this Hotel operates. On a positive note, the breakfast staff were very polite and left a great impression. If you aim for an at-home atmosphere in your Hotel, communication is key; if you're aiming for high-end luxury branding, then staffing is crucial too. Is there an issue with maintenance since no water was coming out from both the open-air bath and regular bath? Both the food and Facility do not match their price point. This Hotel was disappointing overall.

    It was a good accommodation.

    The all-inclusive experience was fantastic, offering three types of draft beer including craft beer, delicious Japanese sake, and a variety of soft drinks. The room was a Western-style room on the mountain side, which I thought would be fine, but not having an ocean view in front of the sea was quite disappointing. However, the room itself was clean and nice. Dinner was exceptionally delicious. The highlight was the ceramic plate grill with oysters, cod, and scallops—the oysters were the plumpest and tastiest I've ever had. The soup from it was so good that I didn’t want to leave a single drop. I had such high expectations for breakfast after dinner that it felt a bit ordinary in comparison—still tasty but slightly underwhelming. The bath area was clean with an ocean view which I thoroughly enjoyed; however, it wasn’t Onsen water which was a bit disappointing. Thanks to being informed about sunrise times by staff members, I woke up early to watch it from the beach right in front of us. Although there were some clouds, it was stunningly beautiful. The staff were incredibly friendly and made my stay very pleasant. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

    We had an incredibly satisfying stay. The room was spacious and clean, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful view of Nehama Beach and the pine forest from the sofa. The futon provided was a Muatsu Futon by Nishikawa, offering excellent comfort for a good night's sleep. The baths, both indoor and open-air, were clean and relaxing. Listening to the sound of waves while soaking in the open-air bath was an extraordinary and soothing experience. We also enjoyed walking along the beach in front of the accommodation before sunset and watching a beautiful sunrise in the morning. As part of their all-inclusive service, they offered unique items like lightly pickled cucumbers, pickles, and turnip pickles—something I personally found delightful! The meals were exceptional! Our meal included a sashimi platter served on a boat-shaped dish that was luxurious and satisfying. The abalone and scallops were delightful treats, but what stood out most was how delicious even simple dishes like flounder sashimi were. Interestingly, there were no meat dishes; instead, seafood took center stage in every dish without leaving us feeling unsatisfied at all—the flavors were truly remarkable! The presentation was beautiful as well; for instance, grilled flounder with yuzu marinade was tenderly cooked to perfection while steamed clams with sake had just right seasoning too! Even breakfast impressed us—the grilled salmon served fresh that morning remained soft rather than cold or hard (as often happens elsewhere). It reminded me how long it’s been since I last enjoyed such delicious freshly-grilled salmon! I didn’t know this when making our reservation but learned upon arrival that their former proprietress is renowned as someone who shares stories about her experiences during past earthquakes/disasters—a fact which surprised me because I recognized seeing this place featured on TV before realizing where we’d arrived at firsthand now hearing those insightful accounts directly felt meaningful indeed inspiring actions preparing better future safety measures afterward reflecting deeply unforgettable moments uniquely possible staying here alone left lasting impressions overall     As mentioned in the reviews, the hostess is absolutely wonderful.

    The ocean-facing Room offers a great view, with a bedroom and a Japanese-style room, making it very comfortable. The hostess and other staff members are kind, and the hostess's personality is especially wonderful. It’s about a 20-minute walk from Unosumai Rugby Stadium, and I would love to visit again after watching rugby matches.

    I was looking forward to it, so it was disappointing.

    I reserved a room with an open-air bath, but there were so many stink bugs that I couldn't go out to the balcony or use the bath, which was very shocking... I understand it's a natural phenomenon, but I wish there had been a word about it at check-in. I wondered if the lack of room guidance was for that reason. There was also a smell of stink bugs in the room and the washroom, and I couldn't relax. The food was delicious, but many dishes were already set up and were a bit cold, which was disappointing. During the meal, other guests were being admonished in a condescending manner, which made me feel uncomfortable. The large public bath was renovated and was clean and nice. I have stayed at properties in the same price range several times before, but there was no welcome or farewell, and I felt it wasn't worth the price. I was disappointed because all the reviews were good, so I had high expectations...
