A Relaxing Stay Where Time Slows Down

It was a wonderful Room with a stunning view of rolling hills and distant mountains. The meals were beautifully presented, highly original Japanese cuisine, and the distinctive tableware—together with the interior—created a strong sense of cohesive style. The service was also pleasant, and their dedication really came through. Thank you for allowing us to spend such a relaxing, peaceful time.

    The highest peak

I was extremely satisfied with everything—the entire Facility, the staff, the cuisine, the quality of the Onsen, the calm atmosphere throughout the property, and the view from my Room. I believe this is one of Japan’s finest Ryokan. I traveled round-trip from Haneda Airport just to stay at Zaborin from Tokyo, and it was absolutely worth it. Thank you for your hospitality. I will visit again.

    Wisteria Maiden

We stayed for two nights over a long weekend. The location and the building are wonderful, but the food was not good. The dishes were overly elaborate, and the natural flavors of the ingredients were lost; the combinations felt discordant. The breakfast bread was completely dried out, and even after we mentioned it, it was the same on both days. Although we had the same breakfast each morning, our Western- and Japanese-style meals were mixed up both times. The driver was great, but overall we did not feel much hospitality.

We stayed for two nights over a holiday weekend. The location and architecture are outstanding, but the food was not good. The ingredients were overworked, which ruined their natural qualities and resulted in mismatched flavors. The service also lacked hospitality overall: the same Japanese and Western dishes were served on both days, orders were mixed up, and the bread was dried out. The driver who provided the Shuttle Service was excellent.

Let go of the body, dismiss cleverness, leave behind form and discard knowledge, and become one with the Great Way—this is called “sitting in forgetfulness.”

Zaborin faces the same birch forest as Shiguchi. For some reason, although the room is 70 m²—half of Shiguchi’s 155 m²—the view through the windows feels almost panoramic and utterly breathtaking. The public areas also draw in abundant outdoor scenery; natural light gives the entire building a rhythm from day to night, and at every turn you’ll find a picture-perfect, poetic scene. I personally think this is a place best visited when snow blankets the mountains. With snow walls enclosing the courtyard, it embodies an unspoken, simple Zen-like calm. All fifteen rooms are named after different crystalline forms of snow—making the design concept unmistakably clear. Created by Shouya Grigg as well, Zaborin places special emphasis on baths that can be enjoyed with unobstructed views both inward and outward. Every room comes with an indoor bath and an open-air onsen bath, both featuring exceptionally high-quality free-flowing hot spring water direct from the source. One night with two meals and three baths (or more!)—pure indulgence. Awarded two Michelin Keys, Zaborin is remarkable not only for its architecture and hot springs; for me, the cuisine was what I looked forward to most. Executive Chef Yoshihiro Seno—Hokkaido-born, formerly a design engineer turned chef with experience in New York and Tokyo—returned home to create “Kita-Kaiseki,” highlighting Hokkaido’s finest ingredients. Paired with beautifully crafted tableware by local artisans, each dish becomes an artwork that whets your appetite. I ended up staying in Niseko far longer than planned—not for anything else but to experience a complete stay from start to finish. Both Sansui Niseko and Zaborin are works by architect Makoto Nakayama; and since Zaborin—as well as Shiguchi and Somoza—share the same owner, Shouya Grigg, it all feels like a northern poem with echoes from beginning to end. Or you could call it pure self-indulgence.

    For my wife's birthday celebration.

A 1.5-hour flight from Tokyo A 2-hour drive by car After all the effort to get there, here is my honest opinion: I will never use this accommodation again. Having visited luxury onsen accommodations across the whole country, I have never encountered a place so unworthy of its price range. The location is excellent, but the hospitality and service were shockingly poor—almost amateurish. For the first time ever, I felt anger on my wife's birthday and was compelled to write a review here because it was that bad. If you cannot provide proper service for tourists, it's better not to try at all. This feels like a rip-off.

    Staff training is insufficient.

Visited with my wife for our honeymoon. It was my second visit, as I had been here 5 years ago before meeting my wife. Then, a staff member came to the room and mentioned that it was a revisit and that I had come with someone else last time. However, they told this to my wife while I was in the bath, not to me directly. Even if they thought it was well-intentioned, there’s no guarantee that someone visiting after 5 years would be with the same person as before. Moreover, my accommodation history as the reserver is personal information shared between me and the accommodation but not something disclosed in relation to my wife. Coming here for our honeymoon only for a staff member to come into our room and essentially tell my wife that her husband visited previously with another woman is unacceptable. The staff's sense of service is severely lacking, and such an incident wouldn’t have occurred if they were more sensitive about handling personal information. Our honeymoon experience was ruined, making this stay worthless. Afterward, we only received an oral apology.

    The worst accommodation experience.

I checked in on October 3, and this was the most unpleasant experience I have had in decades of traveling in Japan. Here is what happened: 1. Upon arriving at the hotel by car, I gave my name to the staff at the entrance, but they could not find my reservation. At the front desk, a woman who seemed to be a manager questioned me harshly about why there was only one representative for a reservation for two people. When I showed her my other reservation history on IKYU.com and explained that "this is always how I book on IKYU," she finally stopped talking. 2. While waiting in the lobby to check in, staff asked me twice, "How will you depart tomorrow?" At first, I didn’t understand and asked back, "What do you mean?" They explained that they were checking whether I needed shuttle service arranged for departure. This was very confusing since I had arrived by car and handed over my keys to the hotel. Were they suggesting that I leave my car behind and walk or take a taxi? 3. After entering the room, I realized it was different from what I had reserved. I had booked a twin room but was given one with a single double bed. 4. The style of the open-air bath also differed from what was described during booking. The same female manager came to my room again and angrily stated, "You booked through IKYU and not directly on our official website. This is not an issue with our hotel; you should contact IKYU."

    Excellent Facility in Every Aspect

This ryokan exceeded all expectations in terms of facilities, rooms, dining, and service. The rooms offer a breathtaking view of the natural hills, and the meals were highly satisfying in both quality and quantity. What stood out the most was the exceptional hospitality and service provided by the staff, leaving us truly impressed by their attention to detail. Everything was so perfect that it felt like there was nothing more one could wish for in an accommodation. Although access may be slightly inconvenient, this facility is well worth visiting. I would definitely love to stay here again if given the opportunity.

    I had avoided it bef...

I had avoided it before due to its rating being below 4.5 on IKYU, but it turned out my worries were unnecessary. The accommodation had two Onsen baths in the room with free-flowing hot spring water, making the stay very comfortable (apparently, they installed air conditioning this year). It was my first time using Apple TV, and while I was initially confused, I got used to it quickly. The service was excellent, and both dinner and breakfast were elaborate and deliciously enjoyable. As for wine pairing, the prices exceeded what one might expect as typical "Niseko prices," with some resistance-inducing costs. Among them, there seemed to be relatively affordable wines served in casual glasses with slightly larger portions—this brought a smile to my face. That said, the pairing matched well with the dishes and personally featured wines that suited my taste perfectly. I’ve heard that overseas tourists are increasing even during summer's off-season recently. This made me think about how accommodations might find it challenging to decide whether their main target should be international guests or Japanese visitors moving forward.

Celebrate your special occasion at Zaborin, where warm memories are made.

We had an unforgettable stay at the dreamlike Zaborin for our wedding anniversary trip, and it was truly a wonderful experience. We are deeply grateful to have celebrated such a special day with my wife in this luxurious and heartwarming accommodation. Upon arrival, we were immediately captivated by the serene atmosphere and the architecture blending seamlessly with nature. Stepping inside, we were enveloped by the soft tranquility of the forest ambiance, naturally shifting our focus to simply "doing nothing." The room was modern yet warm, with a design that highlighted the stunning scenery outside—a space filled with a nostalgic yet extraordinary air. The room itself was a blissful retreat, meticulously designed down to every detail. The greenery visible through the windows resembled a beautiful painting that made us lose track of time. The onsen offered both indoor and open-air baths fed directly from natural hot springs. We enjoyed soaking at different times of day while sharing quiet conversations as we relieved our daily stress together. Both dinner and breakfast featured seasonal ingredients prepared delicately to enhance their natural flavors, leaving an impression of exquisite balance and lingering taste. The pacing of each course felt just right, adding an uplifting sense befitting our celebration. The staff maintained an ideal balance between attentiveness and respecting our personal rhythm during the stay—offering warm gestures and thoughtful care throughout until checkout. This rare accommodation harmonizes tranquility, onsen relaxation, fine dining experiences, and heartfelt hospitality perfectly. We look forward to returning in another season for another memorable visit. One minor disappointment occurred during checkout when I requested matcha service from one male staff member but did not receive it due to some miscommunication. However, this did not detract from what was otherwise an exceptional experience overall; I hope this feedback contributes positively toward future service improvements. Our stay became an unforgettable anniversary memory for us as a couple—escaping daily life’s hustle while deepening our bond through precious moments together in such special surroundings. Thank you so much for providing us with this incredible experience! On our next visit, we look forward to enjoying your matcha service as well. 【Recommended Points】 ・Location: A tranquil setting surrounded by nature offers complete rejuvenation for mind and body. ・Room: Sophisticated design paired with luxurious open-air baths creates moments of pure bliss. ・Dining: Beautifully presented dishes featuring local seasonal ingredients provide both visual delight and rich flavors sure to impress any guest!

    Completely satisfied.

I was extremely satisfied with this accommodation as the perfect conclusion to my two-week trip in Hokkaido. What impressed me most was how much thought the designer put into creating a space for guests, while also considering what would bring personal satisfaction. The atmosphere, seamlessly blending with the surrounding nature, truly felt extraordinary. The hospitality, cuisine, and onsen were impeccable in every way. If I had to point out one minor issue, it would be that the bed size felt a bit small. It would be amazing to stay here again for a multiple night stay. Having experienced high-level accommodations across the whole country, I can confidently say this deserves 5 stars. For those considering it, I highly recommend completing your reservation!

    About the bed

We appreciate the excellent service and thoughtfulness. Everyone was very cheerful, and we were able to spend our time with a gentle feeling. I am very curious, but whose bed is in the Room? I am curious because it was very comfortable to sleep and I was able to sleep soundly.

    Great satisfaction at Stays

This was my first visit. I've been to various Onsen Stays, but this was one of the top ones for me. There were many young staff members, and some were not very experienced, but their earnestness was endearing. The art and interior within the Facility are wonderful. The Onsen in the Room was just right, and the view was lovely. About 70% of the guests were foreigners, and during my visit, it was unfortunate that some small foreign children were noisy. However, the meals were very delicious, and the service was good, so it's a Property I would like to visit again.

The Onsen and meals are outstanding.

I think the onsen and meals are outstanding. However, it was disappointing to find a black swimsuit, presumably left by a previous guest, lying next to the bath. Other than that, I am generally satisfied.

I have a very high evaluation of the overall service quality at Zaborin. The quality of the Room and Onsen is also excellent, but the only disappointment was that there were guests with small children on the day of our stay, and we could hear the noise of the children during meals and in the Room. Especially during dinner, the noise from the children was almost uncontrollable, which was very confusing for us and greatly affected our enjoyment of dinner time. My hope when staying at Zaborin was to enjoy the tranquility of the forest, but this time it was a bit disappointing.
