    A secluded Onsen Accommodation in a villa area, but it wasn’t as good as expected.

    It felt like a hidden Onsen Accommodation tucked away in the Nasu Highlands villa area. The Room we reserved at “Bettei Tokiwa” was just as lovely as we had imagined. From the gated entrance, the stepping stones and mossy garden were full of charm, and the semi-open-air bath screened with a cool-looking reed blind was at the perfect temperature. We were able to relax and truly enjoy our first Onsen trip in a while. Dinner from 6:00 p.m. featured an overwhelming number of dishes—starting with Tochigi beef as the main—and some were even served in Mashiko-yaki pottery, letting us appreciate the chef’s thoughtful touches. On the other hand, breakfast didn’t quite meet expectations. The salad was far from fresh “Nasu vegetables,” looking more like pre-cut cabbage, and for some reason it came with basil-flavored dressing topped with cold bacon and sausage. The store-bought pickles, toasted nori, and spicy cod roe were also disappointing. There was also an oversized but bland rolled omelet and what seemed like a napa cabbage hot pot with a single meatball—making the contrast with dinner the night before quite striking. That said, if you start wishing for more there’s no end to it—but since we came all this way to Nasu, we’d love options like a piping-hot omelet with crispy bacon, freshly squeezed juice, or brioche loaded with cheese. It would also be great if breakfast could be chosen from Japanese or Western set menus!

    The meals are excellent.

    I came to spend a relaxing time with a friend. Both dinner and breakfast felt carefully prepared. The flavors weren’t too strong, and we could really taste the vegetables. It had been a while since I’d been able to enjoy both an unhurried meal and quality time with a friend. Next time, I’d like to bring my family. If you stay here, it’s best to arrive hungry—every dish was delicious, and I was already quite full just before dessert (laugh). The staff also kept a close eye on the pace of our meal, so we were able to relax without any stress. Also, the rolled omelet at breakfast is outstanding.

    It was very good.

    Overall, it was very good. The service and meals were wonderful. I was surprised by how generous the portion of meat at dinner was. The yuba, honey, vegetables, and meat—all locally sourced—were prepared in a way that really brought out their natural flavors. The rolled omelet at breakfast also had a rich flavor, and I was very satisfied. However... the building itself is quite old, and there were several points where I felt repairs are definitely needed. It made me wonder if it was built around 40–50 years ago as some kind of corporate retreat facility. The design itself is lovely. But the closet door in the Room seemed to be left broken, and the lower part of the bathroom door was still badly worn. Also, the dining table we ate at was wobbly; when I stood up it tilted to one side, then bounced back and caused a glass to fall and spill water... The bed and sofa in the Room creaked as well. Even when I wanted to charge my phone, there were no outlets near the bed, etc. It was also disappointing that the dehumidifier in the bathroom was noisy (I think I saw this mentioned in another Review). If these areas are improved, since everyone working there was great, I think it would make for a nice hidden-gem Accommodation.

    It was a kind and welcoming accommodation.

    During our stay, we met only two staff members (they handled everything from front desk service to serving dinner and breakfast), and both were very kind. One of my companions has allergies, and we truly appreciated the thoughtful adjustments to the menu. The Accommodation building itself seems to have some age, but it was clean, and the Room was also well maintained. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    I had a comfortable stay!

    I booked a room with a semi-open-air bath for my onsen-loving boyfriend's birthday. The designer room was stylish, and he was thrilled, saying, "This is the best accommodation I've ever stayed at!" The service was excellent. Upon arriving by car, we were greeted immediately, and our luggage was carried for us. When I gave my name outside while handing over the luggage, I was surprised to find that a name card had already been prepared when we entered—such smooth operations! At dinner, since we had a late lunch and couldn't eat much at first, the staff kindly suggested reducing portion sizes for us. Thanks to their thoughtfulness, we were able to enjoy delicious dishes in smaller portions! Additionally, I had requested a surprise cake but wasn't sure how it would go. However, they offered to bring it to our room instead of serving it during dinner. This allowed us to enjoy the cake later when we felt ready—what thoughtful service! We truly appreciated their hospitality and would love to stay here again!

    Felt like staying at a private villa.

    A Ryokan located in the villa area of Nasu. It features a Goemon-style bath and an open-air Onsen, both clean and comfortable. The room was spacious, almost too much space, making it feel like staying in your own private villa. The meals had a Japanese touch, with all dishes featuring delicious dashi that provided a sense of calmness. Being in the villa area means neighboring houses are close by, but fortunately, the house next door was unoccupied during our stay. If windows were open next door, it might have affected the peaceful atmosphere. Overall, we were very satisfied with the excellent hospitality, relaxing room and baths, and delicious meals!

    Relax with attentive service and enjoy delicious cuisine.

    Thank you for your hospitality. The service and cuisine were excellent. The dinner was delicious with its delicate seasoning. Breakfast was particularly delightful, with the freshly harvested rice being especially tasty. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and enjoyable.     It was excellent.

    I stayed in a separate villa. The Room was spacious, and I could enjoy the private bath without worrying about time, which was very comfortable. The food was delicious and incredibly plentiful. The staff's attentiveness was excellent as well. I would love to stay again.

    A charming and tranquil accommodation located in a villa area

    The building is old, and sound travels easily, so there was a note in the room asking guests to walk quietly. However, the guests in the room above seemed not to have read this request, as their loud footsteps were disruptive and unpleasant. The semi-open-air onsen in the room was spacious, with a comfortable temperature. However, it took some time for the shower water to reach an appropriate temperature, which was slightly inconvenient. The meals were very delicious. However, I personally found the portion of meat dishes too large. It was disappointing that rice wasn’t served alongside the meat; instead, udon noodles were served at the end of the meal. This is just a personal preference. When making my reservation, I saw photos of a two-seater sofa and a single-seater sofa in the room. Unfortunately, there was no single-seater sofa during my stay—I would have appreciated having it. The staff's service was impeccable.

    A 20-inch TV that only shows terrestrial channels may not work properly even in good weather.

    We visited with high expectations for the "detached accommodation" featuring a sauna and Onsen, but the sauna turned out to be a household mist sauna that did not meet our satisfaction in terms of temperature or quality (the lack of sauna photos on both the official website and IKYU.com seems to explain why). The "detached accommodation" also felt damp overall due to poor sunlight exposure. The living space was furnished with only a small two-seater sofa covered in a cheap slipcover and an outdated 20-inch TV—something rarely seen in modern hotels. Moreover, the TV only offered terrestrial channels, many of which were unwatchable due to poor reception (on one night, only NHK and Fuji TV were viewable despite no bad weather like thunderstorms). Meals were served in the main building next door, but the dining area had an atmosphere reminiscent of a budget inn's cafeteria, with cheap tables covered by vinyl mats. While meals followed a standard course format, they fell far short of being crafted by an accomplished chef. Combined with the uninspiring ambiance of the dining area, it was truly disappointing. We came here based on high ratings from Google and IKYU.com but found ourselves let down most by an overall lack of cleanliness throughout. Unfortunately, we do not plan to return again.

    Clean and inviting, with meals that will amaze you.

    The price was impressive considering the meals, the atmosphere of the Facility, and the thorough cleaning. With fewer Rooms, it was very quiet and made for a truly wonderful trip. I will visit again. Thank you!

    I stayed with a frie...

    I stayed with a friend and enjoyed the accommodation in a detached building without worrying about others. The meals were delicious and plentiful, leaving us full until dinner after breakfast. It has become an accommodation I want to visit again. The fresh greenery was also beautiful.

    An old but good accommodation

    We stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and enjoyed a pleasant time with great weather. The building, which seems to be a renovated large villa in the Nasu resort area, has an overall vintage feel but offers a modern and comfortable room. The entrance door was slightly stiff to close, but that was the only minor issue. The staff provided just the right level of attentive service—friendly and polite without being intrusive. The semi-open-air bath attached to our room was very relaxing, and we spent a long time soaking in it. While the onsen water quality wasn't particularly rich, it felt reasonable considering the location. Meals were refined and delicious. The wagyu beef tasting had generous portions and left us very satisfied. It was slightly disappointing that some sake listed on the room service menu wasn’t available at the restaurant. Breakfast, including freshly cooked rice, was also satisfying. Overall, we were pleased with our stay; however, as the onsen felt somewhat mild in quality compared to expectations set by its portrayal as an "onsen ryokan" on booking sites, there might be a slight gap for some guests regarding this aspect.

    We stayed in a detac...

    We stayed in a detached Room. The Room had a charming atmosphere, with a well-maintained moss garden, and the Onsen was absolutely wonderful. Dinner was carefully prepared, and the teppanyaki was satisfying with its generous portions. Although we had to check out during the night due to an urgent matter, we were provided with a late-night meal and received exceptional hospitality. Even in such a short time, we were able to relax and create wonderful memories. Thank you very much!

    I stayed at this accommodation a few years ago. The name had changed, so I didn't realize it was the same place until I stayed there again. However, everything was completely different—extremely delicious food, excellent service, and it felt like a fresh new accommodation.

    It pleasantly exceeded our expectations.

    I hesitate to write too much as it might make it difficult to secure a reservation at this property, but it pleasantly exceeded my expectations. The cuisine and service were perfect. Although there is no large public bath, there are two family-style open-air onsen baths available, which can be used in time slots. The building and facilities are not new by any means, but they are clean. The clientele seemed to be quiet, which was nice. The late-night rice balls also conveyed a sense of warmth. If I may be allowed to make two requests, I would hope for two more types of breakfast drinks and a shop-like space! The breakfast drinks included water, milk, barley tea, and coffee, but it would be nice to have apple juice and orange juice as well. There are space constraints for a shop, so I can't say much, but it would be convenient to have one. In any case, there is no doubt that this is a property I would like to stay at again. I look forward to the next time.

    A special Stays for important days

    I chose this place to spend a relaxing time rather than focusing on sightseeing at the beginning of the year. The snowy villa area had a nice atmosphere, and I was glad I came in winter. I would like to visit during Christmas next time. As shown in the photos, the food is simply delicious. The most impressive were the steak at night and the fluffy omelet in the morning. There are two private baths. I used them three times: before dinner, after dinner, and before breakfast, by making a time reservation at check-in. The indoor bath was a bit hot, and there was also a cute open-air bath. I wasn't confident in driving on snowy roads, so I took the bus, but it was within walking distance from the bus stop, and there is SHOZO CAFE near the next bus stop. I was able to stop by during the waiting time, so I enjoyed it efficiently, and the location was good. (The sidewalk is narrow, so it's definitely better to go by car.) It was a property I would like to choose again for a special day. Thank you very much.

    I was able to relax.

    The detached room was spacious, and the bath was pleasant, allowing for a relaxing experience. The meals were delicious, and the portions were so large that I felt like I was going to burst. However, it was disappointing that the door to the washbasin area did not close properly, the bath was visible from the washbasin and dressing area, and the signal reception in the detached room was poor, making the Wi-Fi completely unusable.

    Relaxing Onsen

    I was able to take a sudden break with my husband, so I hurriedly searched for a nice inn and made a reservation. Perhaps because of this, or maybe they hadn't read my requests, there were many ingredients I couldn't eat, and the meal ended up being disappointing. The room was spacious and comfortable, but it was unfortunate that the detailed cleaning was not thorough. Having dinner in a yukata is a very nice touch, but the smell of grilled meat from the teppanyaki lingered, and I wonder how others dealt with it? I feel that this might be a challenge for the head chef. Everyone has different tastes in food, so it was a bit unfortunate that it didn't quite suit us. Thank you for your hospitality.
