    We were able to relax and take our time.

    The food was delicious, but we were seated in a large hall-like area with assigned tables. Because the layout allowed us to hear everyone else’s conversations, we would have appreciated a bit more consideration for privacy.

    Comfortable Accommodation

    The antique-inspired lobby interior was beautiful. The Room was also comfortable. Meals were served in a private dining room, and since it was next door, it was convenient. The food was delicious and at the standard level for this type of Ryokan. The Onsen is not large, but it wasn’t crowded, so I could relax and enjoy it.

    Nostalgic Asama Onsen

    When I visited Zenkoji Temple to give thanks for completing the Saigoku Pilgrimage, I stayed at the nostalgic Asama Onsen, which I had last visited more than 40 years ago. I chose Kikunoyu, a historic Ryokan built in the traditional honmune-zukuri style. From parking on arrival, the staff kindly guided me into the building. The massive zelkova main pillar and heavy beams were breathtaking, and I was deeply moved by how magnificent the building was—exactly as rumored. Then to my Room: it was spotless, not a speck of dust anywhere. It felt like everything had been checked again and again. You can truly sense their high standards of hospitality and thoughtful attention to detail. After refreshing myself in the Onsen—known as a “beauty bath”—I headed to dinner. Hot dishes were served hot, and each course arrived at just the right time to match our pace. Using seasonal local ingredients, every dish in this kaiseki meal was carefully prepared with great effort, reflecting the high level of skill of the head chef and kitchen team. After dinner, I enjoyed another soak in the large public bath after it switched over for men and women, then went to bed. The next morning, I enjoyed another elaborate and delicious breakfast. At check-out, I had a pleasant conversation with the elegant proprietress (okami), who shared many stories with me. She then saw me off until my car disappeared from view. Kikunoyu truly lived up to its reputation as a long-established Ryokan—I left completely satisfied in both body and mind. Thank you so much for adding something special to my trip to Nagano.

    Delicious dining and a tranquil atmosphere

    This was our second stay. We were very satisfied with the meals—carefully prepared dishes made with quality ingredients and beautifully presented on lovely tableware. The water temperature at Asama Onsen was also just right. Most of the other guests seemed to be couples around our age, so we were able to spend time in a very quiet setting, which made us extremely happy.

    This traditional Ryokan offers a truly satisfying experience with its Onsen, meals, and hospitality. The elegant atmosphere, meticulous cleanliness, and impressive furnishings made it a pleasure to capture photos of various spots. Every area, including the lobby, bath, and dining room, was delightful. I felt completely relaxed during my stay.     A Wonderful Experience

    This was my first visit. I was soothed by the historic building and the calm Room. The meals were carefully prepared using seasonal local ingredients and served freshly made. I truly appreciate this kind of thoughtful service, which is becoming rare nowadays. The large public bath operates on a rotation system, and I was able to enjoy it both at night and in the morning. The water was soft and gentle. I hope to visit again. Thank you very much.

    A charming Ryokan that blends perfectly with the townscape.

    I was delighted when tea was quietly served while chatting with a friend from Matsumoto whom I hadn't seen in 30 years in the lobby. The food was excellent, and we were very satisfied. We were a group of 4 adults and 3 children, and staying together in two connected Rooms was wonderful.

    The Ryokan has a rich history and a charming atmosphere. The folk crafts displayed in the hallway are also eye-catching. The meals were full of seasonal flavors and very generous in portion (apologies for not being able to finish everything...). The bath was wonderful. While not very large, the quality of the water was excellent and very relaxing. The staff provided great service and were extremely kind. It was a trip to relieve daily fatigue, and I was able to relax thoroughly.

    What you expect at t...

    What you expect at this price point becomes the key factor. Considering recent price increases, it felt like it might fall into the reasonable category. Not bad, but something seemed to be missing. After meals, there was no staff interaction, leaving us unsure if we could leave or not. Some staff were overly energetic while others were inexperienced newcomers—if they are young, there's room for growth so it's not bothersome—but overall, I wondered what level this Ryokan aims to achieve. The Onsen may disappoint if you have high expectations based on photos. "Kiku no Yu" is standalone, and there is another open-air bath that fits about three people comfortably in size. Whether it's good or bad for the price depends heavily on your past experiences with Ryokans.

    Amid the rise of faux Ryokan-style accommodations, this is a truly authentic and profound Ryokan where you can feel the genuine quality in every aspect—hot springs, meals, facilities, and service. The hot springs are soft on the skin, the meals emphasize seasonal ingredients and rich flavors, and while there may not be a view, the atmosphere offers tranquility and nostalgia rarely found elsewhere. Works by Hamada Shoji and Samiro Yunoki are casually displayed here, making it an ideal visit alongside Matsumoto Folkcraft Museum. You'll surely fall even more in love with Matsumoto.

    Disposable chopsticks provided for breakfast and dinner feel inadequate, which detracts from the dining experience. It would be better to offer higher-quality chopsticks, such as Rikyubashi, even at a slightly higher cost. The salt-grilled ayu fish is overly salted.

    Delicious cuisine

    A serene accommodation with a solid and traditional structure. The hostess and staff create a warm, homely atmosphere, offering a sense of comfort as if returning to the countryside. Despite my numerous allergies, they kindly accommodated my requests with great care and consideration for which I am truly grateful. The meals were delicately seasoned and delicious. The hot spring has excellent water quality that leaves your skin smooth. I look forward to visiting this accommodation again. Thank you very much!

    The Onsen is not a natural free-flowing hot spring; it uses a circulation filtration system.

    The service, meals, and guest rooms were excellent. However, there was one issue: the basic information section on IKYU.com stated that the Onsen was free-flowing, but in reality, it was a circulation filtration system (as indicated in the changing room as well). As someone who chooses accommodations based on free-flowing Onsen, I found this very disappointing. I would like IKYU to promptly correct this incorrect information.

    The open-air bath is excellent.

    The traditional atmosphere, with features like a fireplace and decorative handballs, provided an extraordinary experience. Among them, the open-air bath, perhaps due to the light snowfall, offered a very magical ambiance and perfect water temperature that filled the heart. It was a property I wanted to visit on a special day.

    It was a very satisfying New Year's stay.

    I stayed for two nights on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. I was able to enjoy a relaxing and luxurious New Year's celebration. It's a personal preference, but I prefer small-scale Japanese-style Ryokan over large Hotels because I expect heartfelt hospitality from the inn. My expectations were met with enjoyable meals, Onsen, and warm conversations. I would love to visit again in a different season.

    Wonderful Ryokan

    A Ryokan with abundant hospitality and a beautiful, elegant proprietress. We thoroughly enjoyed the building with a Shinshu-like charm, the atmospheric furnishings, and the Onsen with a sense of elegance. The dining area was also lovely, and the food, featuring both seafood and mountain delicacies, was of high quality, leaving our family of three very satisfied. I regret not having visited before. I definitely want to visit again.

    A bit disappointing

    My elderly mother (in her late 80s) and grandson (my son) stayed. Although I did not actually stay, I was concerned about letting my mother go to the onsen alone, as she might slip and fall in the wet bath area. Therefore, I found a ryokan with a private bath that is not a unit bath in the room for them to stay. According to my son, "That bath is not acceptable, I can't tell her to use it," and my mother seemed to agree, so they ended up going to the large public bath. It seems they were able to use the large public bath without any issues, so it was fine in the end. However, although it was stated that there was a bath in the guest room, there were no photos. I believe the staff might understand what my son means, and if there is room for improvement, I would appreciate it, as well as attaching photos of the bathroom.

    I was very satisfied.

    Upon arrival, as I was about to park, someone noticed and came out to greet me warmly. The building itself is old, but it seems well-maintained and repaired. The meals, both breakfast and dinner, were very delicious. The portions might be just right for men, but perhaps a bit much for women. In particular, I appreciated the courteous and pleasant service from the staff.

    Stays in Japan

    As stylish Stays are increasing, we visited Kikuno-yu, which continues to be a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The interior was very clean, and the staff, including the proprietress, were very pleasant, allowing us to have a comfortable stay throughout. The food was very delicious, and the hot water was very warming and pleasant. If we visit the Matsumoto area again, we would definitely like to visit again. It is a Property that makes you feel that way, and I hope it remains unchanged in the future. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    Old-fashioned atmosphere

    It was my first time staying here, and it was very charming and pleasant. The highlight was definitely the chrysanthemum bath. It had a unique atmosphere and was very relaxing. The men's and women's baths switch at 10 PM, but the red bath is smaller with fewer washing areas and sinks, so there can be a bit of a wait when it's crowded. However, during this stay, all the other guests were very considerate, so I didn't have any unpleasant experiences. The food was absolutely exquisite! Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and very satisfying! There were plenty of seasonal dishes that were visually appealing and comforting. The timing of the service was perfect, making for a wonderful experience. The sake was also incredibly delicious. There are quite a few stairs, but there are antiques on display, and the red carpeted corridors are impressive. The staff were kind and attentive, making for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

    Very satisfied with the heartfelt kaiseki cuisine.

    This was my first time staying here, and I was delighted by the number of dishes in the kaiseki meal. Each dish was seasoned to highlight the seasonal ingredients, making them very delicious. The presentation of the dishes was also wonderful. Thank you for the very delicious meal.

    It is by no means a new facility, but it is a small, calm hot spring inn that is thoroughly cleaned, and all the staff provided very courteous service, allowing us to have a pleasant stay. If there were an option in the meal plan to reduce not only the content but also the number of dishes (quantity), I feel that even the generation with a smaller appetite could enjoy the delicious food with less guilt.
