I was able to relax deeply in the Japanese-style Room. The indoor bath and open-air bath in the Room were wonderful, the meals were delicious, and the staff were very pleasant—overall, it was a highly satisfying stay.

We stayed here to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We had a detached guesthouse with an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and thanks to that we were able to fully enjoy the Onsen. I usually don’t spend much time bathing, but the open-air bath felt so wonderful that I soaked in it many times. The Room was a Japanese-Western style room, but since I have trouble with my legs, I thought it would have been nice to have a chair. The older Room had a slight musty smell, but we were able to stay comfortably without any issues. We had dinner at the dining area. There were many dishes, and the salt-grilled yamame trout and grilled wagyu beef were outstanding. The service was attentive as well, and each dish was brought out at just the right time. We also received sparkling wine for the birthday celebration, which made my husband very happy. When we left, we were given souvenirs (the croissants were incredibly delicious) and even seen off by the staff. It was a very fulfilling two days. We will visit again. Thank you very much.

A bit disappointing!
We had always wanted to visit Kurokawa Onsen, so after searching around we chose this Accommodation and visited as a group of four. The indoor bath wasn’t particularly impressive. We waited for the bath with the waterfall to be lit up before going, but the path there was pitch-dark with no lighting and felt very scary, and the bath itself was small and disappointing. For dinner we chose the course featuring grilled wagyu beef on a wire mesh. It was tasty in an ordinary way. All of the staff were pleasant and kind. Breakfast started at 8:30 at the earliest, and we would have preferred an earlier time.

Not recommended at all.
Sometimes I come across places and wonder, “Why on earth does this Accommodation have such high ratings?”—and this is exactly one of them. After check-in, for some reason I was hurried along to my Room. But when I crossed the front desk to retrieve something I’d left in my car, they were serving the next guests welcome drinks and fruit/dessert. When the female staff member at the front desk saw me, she looked like she thought, “Oh no!” If guests on a no-meals Plan are not offered welcome drinks and similar items, then please state that clearly to guests and also announce it on your website and with a notice at the front desk. I arrived without knowing this and felt mocked; it left me extremely upset. [Room] Everywhere (except the bathroom) smelled of mold, felt damp, and was dimly lit. It’s just old overall. I wouldn’t feel safe staying here alone. [Bathroom] There were dead insects everywhere (I understand it’s in the mountains, but… even with daily cleaning, would that many carcasses really end up on the floor?). Despite being very spacious, several lights (2 out of 5?) were burnt out, so at night it felt creepy and I couldn’t bathe. It’s already dim even when all lights are on for atmosphere—this was unacceptable. [Good points] The quality of the hot spring water (my skin became smooth), and the female staff member’s response at checkout (since I was in a bad mood she seemed flustered; I feel sorry for her). I will never visit again so I’m not asking for any improvements; however, given how highly rated this Accommodation is, it just doesn’t sit right with me—and I wanted to share what happened to me. [Additional note] After checking out, I’m staying in Kurokawa Onsen now, and even though it’s an Onsen right next door, I’m surprised by how different the level is. The water here really was excellent… which makes it all the more disappointing.

Quiet
The sound of the waterfall and birds in the peaceful surroundings was wonderful. The staff were very courteous, and the food was absolutely delicious.

The open-air bath in the Room was very spacious, and I enjoyed a long soak in the warm water while looking up at the moon. However, no hot water came out of the shower even after waiting for several minutes. There were three shower stations in the indoor bath, but just like the open-air bath area, none of them had hot water. Moreover, one of the three showers did not even have cold water. It was disappointing because the open-air bath itself was so nice.

It was excellent.
The Room had a wonderful contrast between the old pillars and the new wallpaper. It was raining, but the open-air bath had a roof, so we were able to enjoy the Onsen in a great atmosphere. The meals were also very delicious. I would like to visit again.

We were truly delighted by your thoughtful hospitality!
From the pre-stay communication to the thoughtful care during our stay, and even the souvenir as we left—everything was absolutely perfect! We were truly touched by the kindness of the proprietress and all the staff. The meals were lightly seasoned, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine, and we enjoyed them very much. This is an Accommodation we would love to visit again for a relaxing getaway.

The food is delicious, but there are issues with the Facility.
Listed on IKYU.com with good Reviews, priced over 70,000 yen for 2 people in Kumamoto, I expected a comfortable stay but encountered some issues. The toilet's washlet was not functioning, the safe was broken, and the open-air bath in the Room was too hot to use (it was adjusted but gradually became hot again). There was only one portable basket provided for going to Takimi no Yu. The food was delicious. While the presentation lacked excitement, it allowed us to enjoy local ingredients. The fact that the Onsen is hot might appeal to those who prefer water close to its source. Please note that there are many steps and slopes on-site. In winter, snow can fall; if traveling by car during snowy conditions, snow tires are essential. Takimi no Yu featured two beautiful waterfalls of different sizes! A higher temperature for Takimi no Yu might be preferable.

Hospitality Accommodation: Are winter tires required in winter?
It was a wonderful accommodation. The onsen with natural hot spring water and the open-air bath in the room made it a very luxurious stay. A kotatsu was also provided, allowing us to relax as if we were back at home. The meals were meticulously prepared, with each dish served with great care. However, it snowed during the night, which added to the charm of the experience, but since we came with regular tires, we were worried about our return trip and had to check out in a hurry—this was unfortunate. Even then, the staff kindly helped us remove snow from our car, which was very helpful. I truly felt their hospitality until the very end. Next time, I would love to visit during another season and take my time enjoying this place again.

Did you have the New Year you envisioned?
This was my first time staying at this accommodation. I usually stay in Kurokawa Onsen, but this time I decided to try a new place! After arriving at Kurokawa Onsen by highway bus from Fukuoka, the shuttle service to Manganji Onsen made the transfer smooth and easy. From the phone communication before my stay to the warm hospitality during my visit, everything exceeded expectations. The room's private indoor bath and open-air onsen were both charming and incredibly relaxing! The dining area was a private room, allowing our family to enjoy a leisurely meal together. As mentioned in reviews, the dishes were highly satisfying in both menu variety and taste! They even remembered my birthday from our phone conversation and surprised me with a delightful celebration—such a thoughtful gesture! From check-in to check-out, every moment was truly blissful. Thank you so much for such an amazing experience! Although there seemed to be fewer staff members, everyone responded promptly with wonderful smiles, making it an exceptionally comfortable stay!

Take a Moment to Relax
I visited during the autumn season. It was an accommodation with a calm atmosphere and an onsen that allowed me to fully relax. Staying in a detached room with a view of the river, I enjoyed a truly luxurious time. The meals were served in private dining rooms, offering delicious and delicate dishes in a private setting. This is definitely an accommodation I want to visit again.

An extraordinary experience in a convenient and comfortable world.
In a world where convenience and comfort are prioritized throughout the seasons, this accommodation offers a truly extraordinary experience of an otherworldly space and time. In mid-December, while it was cold outside, even with the heater on, the room felt chilly. It was hard to leave the warmth of the cushion. Going to the bathroom or bath required braving the cold, which was quite tough. The TV was outdated and did not support Netflix or Prime Video, so I watched movies on my small iPad instead. The meals were in a nostalgic traditional kaiseki style with decent flavors that paired well with sake. The service level was average—not much different from standard ryokans and far from luxurious accommodations. However, it was evident that great care had been taken to ensure guests would not encounter each other face-to-face during their stay. In today's comfortable and convenient world, these experiences have become rare treasures. It truly was a valuable one-night stay!

We stayed as a group of seven, including my sister's family.
I chose the sukiyaki dinner. The portion of meat was just right, and the horse sashimi and tatami were delicious. The bath was not crowded, so I could relax and enjoy it. I would love to stay here again.

A single accommodation with delicious meals
Stayed in the Special Room "Gekkou." ■ Room Spacious, but has a somewhat old-fashioned feel like a countryside grandmother's house. While it lacks luxury, it is clean. The bathroom on the bedroom side shown in the official layout was not present. ■ Onsen Colorless and odorless with excellent water quality. The open-air bath is about the size of a public bath's outdoor area, and at night you can lie down and enjoy a sky full of stars. Although there is a road across the river, privacy does not seem to be an issue. ■ Facility Due to many renovated areas, accessing the open-air bath changing room requires passing through an outdoor path. Additionally, there are no handrails in the toilet, making it slightly inconvenient. It is far from being barrier-free and not recommended for elderly guests. ■ Meals Meals for special rooms are served in-room and were absolutely outstanding! Generous portions with everything tasting delicious—likely due to Kansai-style dashi seasoning—and tender meat as well. The meals are undoubtedly this ryokan's highlight and even surpassed those of high-end ryokans in Izu Hakone. Located away from Kurokawa Onsen, so onsen-hopping isn't possible; however, this makes it an ideal accommodation for relaxing at your own pace.

Onsen Indulgence
This accommodation offers unlimited enjoyment of natural hot spring baths. The temperature can be slightly adjusted, so as a fan of lukewarm baths, I requested it to be 2-3 degrees lower. They adjusted it during my meal time. However, even then, it was a bit hot for me—but that's part of the charm of natural hot springs. The meals were hearty and satisfying, with warm dishes served one after another until I was completely full and content. By the time the grilled meat arrived, I was already quite full and wished it had been served earlier in the course. For those with smaller appetites, you might want to consider when to enjoy the meat dish. The large public bath with a view of the waterfall features nighttime illumination of the falls. Excitedly heading there at night, I found the illuminated waterfall to be magical and beautiful. However, being alone in the women’s bath at night made me feel slightly uneasy, so I left earlier than planned—a small regret. Since there is an alternating schedule for morning and evening use between two sections of the large public bath area, my morning soak allowed me to enjoy a bath closer to the river. Perhaps because each room has its own private bath facility as well, no one else was using the large public bath in that early hour—leaving me with an indulgent feeling as I had it all to myself!

Aso Trip
We stayed at Accommodation Kafuugetsu for our honeymoon. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, whose attentive and thoughtful service was truly exceptional! This time, we stayed in the Hotaru Room and were amazed by its spaciousness for two people, as well as the private indoor bath and open-air bath attached to the room. We thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the Onsen at our own pace. The meals were also delightful, featuring local ingredients and specialty dishes—especially the soy milk hot pot, which was absolutely exquisite! We left completely satisfied and are already planning to return during winter to experience a different kind of wonder while soaking in the Onsen with a view of snowy landscapes. Thank you so much to all the staff for taking such great care of us during our stay!

Felt it was not cost-effective.
The bath was wonderful, but the room and meals felt outdated. Having stayed in Yufuin the previous day, I couldn't help but compare. While the quality of the onsen was outstanding, I felt that the atmosphere of the accommodation and meals were lacking. It was uncomfortable to see a veteran staff member scolding a trainee in front of guests or repeatedly mentioning that they were new. Honestly, 40,000 yen per person felt expensive.

I definitely want to stay on the riverside again next time.
We stayed here upon a request to visit Kurokawa Onsen for a family celebration of a 60th birthday. We received a call to Check Reservation, and during the call, we were informed that they would prepare a red vest and hood for the occasion, which made us very happy! During dinner, we wore them for commemorative photos and even received sparkling wine for the toast as part of the service. It became such a wonderful memory. Thank you so much. The Room had a calm atmosphere, with both an indoor bath and an open-air bath that were impressively spacious. The open-air bath at "Takimi no Yu" was just as beautiful as in the photos; we could relax in the Onsen while enjoying views of the waterfall. While our Room's private open-air bath was delightful on its own, it didn’t have views of the waterfall—so I highly recommend visiting "Takimi no Yu." The indoor bath in our Room was incredibly luxurious with its spaciousness and charming beams on the ceiling; I absolutely loved it. The staff provided attentive service throughout our stay, making it very comfortable. I wish I could have stayed another night! Next time, I’d love to stay in one of their riverside Rooms again! Early summer might be the best season after all!

Luxury Ryokan
The location is excellent, and the entrance gate was beautiful. The staff welcomed us promptly and guided us smoothly. There was a welcome drink and snack service in the lobby. The lobby featured an irori (traditional Japanese hearth), which added a charming atmosphere. The large public bath offers views of a waterfall for both men and women. After 8 PM, it is illuminated, creating a magical ambiance. Since we were the only guests at that time, we could use it as a private bath. The public bath had face towels readily available and was kept very clean. The dining area consisted of private rooms separate from the main building for all guests except those staying in special suites. The meals were served on sunken tables, and every dish was absolutely delicious! They also accommodated allergies or dietary restrictions in advance. We stayed in a room with an open-air Onsen by the riverside—it was very clean! There was also an indoor bath within the room itself; while the structure of the room felt traditional, everything including water facilities worked perfectly fine without any issues. Towels were provided generously along with yukata robes and loungewear. Since this accommodation is located in the mountains, insects can be quite noticeable around outdoor areas or baths at night—it's recommended to keep lights off when not needed and turn them on only when entering these spaces; also ensure doors are closed properly. For rooms with natural hot spring Onsen baths directly sourced from their springs (kakenagashi), temperature adjustments can be made upon request to staff members! Changing rooms are equipped with fans for comfort! Amenities are plentiful too—complimentary drinking water bottles matching guest numbers were provided. You can even order massages (for an additional fee) to your room—highly recommended as they were excellent! A Yamazaki convenience store is about 10 minutes away by car but closes early; alternatively, there’s another 24-hour convenience store approximately 15 minutes away—we suggest purchasing items beforehand if needed. From start to finish, all staff members demonstrated exceptional hospitality that left us deeply impressed. We would love to stay here again!

[Moonlight] Special Room - The Best!
The open-air bath in the room is incredibly spacious! It's like a pool, surrounded by waterfalls and rivers—an exceptional Onsen experience! Meals served in the room were also relaxing. The horse meat, beef loin, fillet, and rice were absolutely delicious! A private and serene accommodation for adults. The drive from Takachiho Gorge was fantastic! The next day, we fully enjoyed Aso with visits to Daikanbo and Mount Aso's crater.

The Best Bath!
Stayed for one night during Golden Week. After a tiring climb at Kuju, we were warmly greeted at the entrance upon arrival, which left a great impression. The "Susuki" room we were guided to seemed like a standard room among the ten rooms of Kafuugetsu, but it still featured two Japanese-style rooms along with a spacious indoor bath and an open-air bath. Initially planning to use the indoor bath, I was drawn by the name and decided to visit "Takimi no Yu." This open-air bath is designed as if you have exclusive access to a waterfall basin, allowing us to enjoy an idyllic landscape reminiscent of an ink painting until dinner time. The next morning, I used the indoor bath. Dinner was a grilled black Wagyu beef course accompanied by various dishes such as horse sashimi, salt-grilled yamame trout, and wild vegetables harvested near the accommodation. Needless to say, breakfast was equally luxurious. The attentive service from staff members and the soothing effects of the onsen's natural hot spring water helped ease my muscle pain from hiking. Before I knew it, what started as a trip focused on mountain climbing turned into one where memories of staying at Kafuugetsu became most vivid. Next time, I’d love to bring my son and his wife along. Thank you for the freshly baked croissant souvenir—an unexpected yet delightful touch from this traditional Ryokan!

I absolutely loved it!! I've visited many accommodations with rooms featuring open-air baths, but this is the first time I felt compelled to write a review. First of all, I realized that the value of an accommodation greatly depends on its staff. This accommodation offers heartwarming and wonderful hospitality. In particular, I want to visit again just to meet the staff member who used to work energetically in Kitashinchi! It’s been a while since I experienced such pleasant service where tea is brought out without even having to ask for it. The open-air bath attached to the room was also perfectly temperature-controlled, allowing me to enjoy it comfortably even in the middle of the night. Dinner was served at just the right timing, dish after dish. It was delicious and filling—completely satisfying! Thank you so much for your hospitality!

This is the first time I have written a comment on ikyu.com because my stay at the hotel was so wonderful. Both the private hot spring and the public hot spring offer truly stunning views. The dinner was absolutely delicious. All the staff members went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. As we are foreigners, for clear communication, the staff even printed out a note in my mother tongue.

The futon was terrible, just one thin futon like a minshuku. The yukata was tattered. The room was dirty, but having two baths in the room was a relief and comfortable.

It was an inn that all four family members would like to visit again. The meals were satisfying in both quality and quantity.
