    An Auberge in Oku-Nikko

I felt that the ingredients were handled with great care. The natural flavors were brought out beautifully, resulting in a course meal that never became tiresome. As shown in the photos, the tableware is wonderful and really enhances each dish. The sulfur hot-spring bath was gentle and soothing—I could have stayed in it forever.

    Your First Trip to Oku-Nikko

This was my first trip to Oku-Nikko, and I stayed here for the first time. I was satisfied with everything—Accommodation, meals, the free-flowing hot spring bath, and the surroundings. The carefully prepared meals were very delicious, and the portions were just right. With only a few Rooms, the property felt calm and quiet, making it perfect for spending relaxing time with my family. I would love to stay again on my next visit to Oku-Nikko.

    Just as expected: Yunomori

This was our third stay, and every year it exceeds our expectations. We checked in at 2:00 PM, and when we came out of the large public bath, it was raining. I had planned to go for a walk, but instead I was able to relax in the Room with a beer, which was great. The ReFa hair dryer in the Room was excellent as well. As for the food, the pumpkin fondue was outstanding—both the concept and the ingredients were wonderful. Every year there is some kind of surprising dish that delights us. I’ll work hard so we can come again next year!

Satisfied with the excellent Onsen and delicious meals

I was able to relax in an Onsen with a gentle sulfur scent, featuring natural mineral deposits and continuously flowing water from the source. The meals were satisfying in both taste and portion size.

    This was my third stay.

This was our third stay—our first visit was in mid-August last year, then late March this year, and now late May. We were hoping to hear the spring cicadas and feel the fresh signs of spring, but we didn’t get to enjoy their chorus this time. If we had come a little later, we might have seen more wild mountain flowers as well. We did get to see deer and monkeys again. The sulfur-scented Onsen and the meals here suit us perfectly, so we keep coming back in different seasons. It’s fun how each visit brings new discoveries even in the same place. The staff are attentive without being intrusive, which makes our stay very comfortable. Unfortunately, we still haven’t seen a sky full of stars after sunset here, so we’re hoping to return again before midwinter.

No matter when you stay, it’s always the best!!!

I have stayed at this Accommodation every year for over a decade, and I’m always extremely satisfied—it’s the best!!! I especially loved the open-air bath in the Room and the meals. Thank you for accommodating our requests regarding the meals with such great attention to detail. I would love to stay again. Thank you very much. P.S. Since you have renovated the Room and other areas, I think it would be a good idea to update your brochures and website with the latest information. It would be a shame not to.

    The food is delicious.

This was our second stay, following last year. Since the large public bath and the open-air bath are now available for private use, we were able to relax. There is a slight sulfur smell, but the water is not highly acidic and feels gentle on the skin. The carefully prepared meals in just the right portions were excellent.

    Snow and Onsen

This was our second stay, drawn back by the snowy scenery and milky Onsen. Our expectations were fully met, and we were able to enjoy both the snow and the hot springs. We were also happy to taste seasonal dishes ahead of time, such as bamboo shoots and butterbur. The shabu-shabu with beef, seri (Japanese parsley), and yuba was delicious as well. There was an unexpected boiler malfunction the next morning, but we were able to use the Onsen at a sister Ryokan. The water there was surprisingly rich and deeply cloudy. For an Onsen-loving couple like us, it felt like good luck—and for about two days after returning home, we could still smell sulfur on our bodies (laugh). We are considering staying again.

I stayed here at the end of March.

We traveled by private car. It was late March, and we were worried about snow accumulation and icy roads, so we called several times to ask about the conditions in the area. Each time, they responded kindly and thoroughly. Although Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto may look close on a map, the weather can feel quite different between them. In the end, we were able to make it with regular tires, but it seems there is usually still plenty of snow around this time—perhaps due to global warming. This was our second stay at Yunomori. It has become one of my most relaxing places. My spouse and I really love the meals, the Onsen, and the overall atmosphere of the Accommodation. The staff also interact with guests at just the right distance, which makes us feel very comfortable. We would love to visit again in a different season.

    We had a wonderful stay.

This was my fourth visit to Oku-Nikko Yumoto. For the previous three trips, I stayed at the same Accommodation each time, but this time I chose Yunomori for the first time. The public areas and Room were thoroughly cleaned and spotless down to every detail. There are two large baths that can be reserved for private use, and I was able to fully enjoy the powerful Onsen in a truly luxurious way. With only 12 Rooms in total, it felt like occupancy that day was around 60–70%. Perhaps because of that, I never once found both “available anytime if vacant” private baths in use at the same time and had to wait. (During peak seasons or when fully booked, it might not be so easy.) The bath in the Room was also more than sufficient—another luxury. The meals were extremely delicious. For young men with big appetites, the portions might feel a little small. Many of the dishes were served on carefully chosen tableware, and the presentation was beautiful. If there were guests with children who can sometimes be noisy, it might not feel quite as calm, but during this stay, it felt like an Accommodation where you can simply spend quiet, relaxing time just as you hope.

    Everything was perfect.

It was a wonderful, wonderful Accommodation in Oku-Nikko. The open-air bath in the snow cooled my face with the cold wind. The Onsen is free-flowing from the source, warming you from the core. After warming up in the Onsen, we enjoyed a relaxing dinner. The meal was beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients, and we enjoyed it—deliciously and happily. Everyone at the Accommodation was very friendly, and we had a comfortable dining experience. A fire was lit in the lounge’s wood-burning stove, and in its gentle warmth, we were able to spend some time after dinner. We will visit again.

The open-air bath in the Room was excellent!

The open-air bath in the Room features natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source. The temperature was initially too high to enter without adding water, but once adjusted, it offered a delightful experience with plenty of mineral deposits and a pleasant sulfur scent. The texture of the water was smooth, providing warmth and relaxation that made me want to soak multiple times. While soaking in the bath, the view was partially obscured, allowing only a glimpse of the sky. However, at night, countless constellations were visible, creating a breathtaking sight. It would have been even more relaxing if I could enjoy an unobstructed view of the surrounding scenery while soaking in the bath.

Thank you for the wonderful stay. I had a very pleasant and comfortable time. The meals were especially satisfying, with gentle and mild flavors that were kind to the body. I particularly enjoyed the breakfast, which was delicious. The room was quiet, convenient, and allowed me to relax at ease. Apart from the sound of the river flowing, there were no other noises, making it a peaceful environment for rest. The staff's hospitality was also excellent. The Onsen in the room was refreshing with its free-flowing water; however, it was slightly disappointing that the temperature of the Onsen felt a bit low. I look forward to visiting again in spring!

I had a very relaxing stay.

Previously, we stayed near Lake Chuzenji and visited Lake Yunoko in Oku-Nikko, where we fell in love with the area. For our next trip, we decided to stay right by Lake Yunoko and found "Yunomori." Our conditions were proximity to Lake Yunoko, a quiet atmosphere even when fully booked, an adult-oriented space, relaxing common areas like the lobby, and a room with an open-air hot spring bath sourced from natural springs. To our surprise, this accommodation met all of our requirements perfectly. During our stay, we thoroughly enjoyed both the meals and the baths. The private bath in the room was particularly spacious—large enough for two people to soak comfortably—and it became one of the most used baths during any of our stays at accommodations so far. We were extremely satisfied and hope to return again when looking for a relaxing getaway.

    For a refreshing experience

Seeking a cooler escape from Tokyo, I visited Oku-Nikko. I was finally able to secure a reservation at Yuno Mori, which is often fully booked. It was an ideal accommodation for me, with its hidden retreat-like atmosphere in the forest. The meals were delicious, the staff provided excellent service, and the room and facilities were clean and comfortable. As for suggestions, I would appreciate improvements regarding the noisy bed springs and the overly hot water in the large public bath. I've found another accommodation I'd love to visit again!

    Third Stay

I stayed at this accommodation for the third time, following visits in 2020 and 2022. It is rare for me to stay at the same accommodation multiple times, which shows how comfortable this place is. The sulfur Onsen sourced from Oku-Nikko Yumoto is exceptional. Two years ago, the room was renovated and transformed into a very comfortable space. The private open-air bath in the room became larger, and even the large public open-air bath can be reserved for private use, allowing guests to relax while enjoying the view. The meals served both at dinner and breakfast follow a consistent pattern each time but are sufficient if you don't expect luxury. However, an old hairdryer felt out of place in such a beautifully renovated room. I hope it will be replaced with a new one soon. With its outstanding Onsen and relaxed atmosphere that allows me to unwind without worry, I feel like I'll visit this accommodation again in a few years' time.

I had a relaxing and restful stay.

It was my first visit, and I enjoyed the quiet surroundings while soaking in the Onsen with the sound of the river! The Wi-Fi connection could be better, but taking a bath and reading is also a great option (*´ω`*).

As the name "Mori no Yu" suggests, it is a high-quality accommodation!

Upon arrival, I was confused about the parking space, but a staff member promptly and kindly guided me, which was very helpful. The interior and room I was shown were not flashy but tastefully designed with a calm atmosphere. From the room, I could hear the sound of a stream, and in the morning, the chirping of birds was delightful. Most notably, the semi-open-air bath in the room featured high-quality sulfur hot spring water with floating mineral deposits—truly satisfying along with the private bath. The meals incorporated seasonal ingredients and were carefully prepared; even the tableware added to their deliciousness (I forgot to take photos of some dishes). This has become one of my favorite accommodations to revisit; I look forward to staying again!

    The perfect summer retreat

It was refreshing to spend time without air conditioning for the first time in a while. The meals here, both dinner and breakfast, were elegantly seasoned with high-quality ingredients and just the right portions—perfectly suited to my taste. The Onsen had a rich and invigorating feel, leaving my skin smooth and soft. Since I took multiple baths, having an extra set of indoor wear would have been nice.

The milky white sulfur hot spring was excellent.

<Good Points> - Milky white sulfur hot spring, which is quite rare. You can smell the sulfur as soon as you step into the accommodation's parking lot. - Cool weather in Oku-Nikko even during midsummer, though I wouldn't want to visit in winter. - The food was lightly seasoned and delicious, just to our taste. <Areas for Improvement> - Customer service could be better. It felt a bit impersonal and business-like, possibly handled by part-time staff? It didn't feel like professional hospitality. - The facility is outdated. The bed creaks loudly due to worn-out springs, and there are unnatural dents on the room chairs. The furniture doesn't match the price of this accommodation.

    Overall satisfied.

The Room was spacious and clean. The semi-open-air bath attached to the Room was also large, with plenty of water at a comfortable temperature, providing great satisfaction. The public bath can be reserved for private use, which is nice, but its age was slightly noticeable.

Cool in summer, featuring rejuvenating Onsen and delicious meals.

The Room does not have air conditioning. Instead, it features panel shades with circulating cold water, providing a comfortable temperature even during the hot month of July. The semi-open-air bath in the Room offers natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source; stirring it with a paddle before entering and enjoying it at a hotter temperature is very relaxing. The bathwater is rich in mineral deposits and has a robust quality. Meals are served in small portions per dish but consist of many courses, making the overall quantity just right. Every dish, including Nikko yuba (tofu skin), sashimi, charcoal-grilled ayu fish, and Tochigi Wagyu beef shabu-shabu, was delicious. Around Lake Yunoko lies a national park area with limited Facilities such as an Environmental Ministry Visitor Center; finding lunch spots can be challenging. However, it's an excellent place to take leisurely walks and enjoy nature at your own pace.

Indulge in the luxury of milky white sulfur hot springs.

A quiet and serene accommodation in Oku-Nikko Yumoto. The scent of the onsen is truly uplifting. Excitement builds with the room and bath that meet expectations. Without delay, I jumped into the bath. So relaxing... it washes away all the fatigue from traveling. After soaking up plenty of onsen goodness, I returned to the room, only to hear my wife say, "What’s that? (laughs)." "Huh?" I looked at myself where her gaze landed—my body was covered in mineral deposits from the onsen! It looked a bit odd… (laughs). These are luxurious components of the onsen water, but there were so many floating around that it almost resembled yuba (tofu skin)—fitting for Nikko! For those who love onsens, this might not be an issue at all. As an onsen enthusiast myself, this was a first-time experience for me. It would have been nice to skim them off with a net before entering—or even chopsticks could work since they looked edible! Still, the quality of the water was excellent; even after returning home, my body carried its fragrance for an entire day. Oh, one tip: as this is a natural hot spring with free-flowing source water (gensen kakenagashi), note that it can get quite hot—so we recommend keeping some cold water running gently into your tub while bathing!

    The location and Ons...

The location and Onsen are excellent. Surrounded by the lush nature of Oku-Nikko, it was cool and relaxing. The hot spring source is very hot, so adjusting it yourself can be a bit challenging. The large public bath was too hot to stay in for long, which was disappointing. It seems like it would feel great in winter! The renovated room was clean and pleasant. Here are some thoughts compared to other accommodations I've stayed at: The hairdryer in the room was disappointing. There were no amenities provided in the large public bath, and there was no prior explanation about this. Meals had fewer dishes both for breakfast and dinner. While they were tasty, they might not be enough for those with a big appetite in their 20s. The preparation of pike conger (Hamo) wasn’t thorough; one portion had too many bones, but I didn’t mention it at the time as it seemed excessive to complain then... It seems that the lounge's alcohol service has ended; only coffee and ice cream were available instead. There was no reply to my inquiry email beforehand... which was unfortunate, so I called instead. There were a few points that caught my attention during my stay as well.

    It was excellent!

Thank you very much for your hospitality once again. We especially appreciate how attentively you accommodated our dining requests. The renovated Japanese-modern room was lovely and comfortable. The service from the staff, including the proprietress, was as excellent as always. It was perfect! We look forward to staying at your accommodation again!

    Thank you very much.

Thank you once again for your exceptional hospitality. Although we were concerned about the snow forecast, we were fortunate that it had little impact on driving, and we arrived safely. We enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing stay in the wonderfully quiet environment as always. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious. The quality of the hot spring water here is truly outstanding. While it’s slightly hot, even stirring it before entering becomes an enjoyable experience. Before our departure, you kindly cleared the snow off our car with great care. We hope to visit again someday. Thank you for providing such a healing time!

    About Room Facilities

Heating facilities are available, but an explanation is necessary upon guests' arrival as the operation differs from that of an air conditioner.

The snowy landscape of Oku-Nikko is breathtaking.

This was our second stay since last summer. On the day of our stay, we enjoyed the private large bath and the onsen in our room while admiring the snow-covered scenery. By morning, fresh snowfall had turned the roads completely white, and the snow-adorned trees looked like a painting. We relished delicious meals, warmed ourselves to the core in the onsen, and experienced a truly blissful time. The room had been renovated in December last year, with a pleasant wooden aroma and beautiful kumiko partitions that added charm. It was perfect for relaxing at ease. The staff were always smiling and made us feel so comfortable that we look forward to visiting again!

The room is clean!! But for the price...

The room has been renovated and has a clean feel. A space where you can relax. The large public bath can be reserved for private use without a reservation during limited hours, and it was convenient to check availability from a smartphone. The WiFi was stable and comfortable throughout the property. The room's bath was at a high temperature upon arrival, and I adjusted it to a suitable temperature by stirring and adding water, but afterward, perhaps due to the outside temperature, it didn't heat up, making temperature adjustment quite challenging. Well, it's a common issue with flowing hot springs, so it was expected. The meals were creatively prepared and satisfying in quantity, but perhaps because all guests started their meals at the same time, the meal began without drinks (this was a first-time experience). The tables were separated by thin curtains, making it a somewhat unsettling space for dining. Without a bell, we dined while staff frequently walked around. I wished dinner could have been at a more leisurely pace. The room hangers were cheap plastic and difficult to use, the hairdryer and bath mat were at a business hotel level, and in the lounge, only small sake cups were provided, with the glass cups available at arrival mysteriously gone. It would have been better not to provide them at all. Other guests were also puzzled by the small sake cups. Are we supposed to drink from these??? The impression was that it was not worth the price. It's a shame about the small details. In Oku-Nikko, I always used a different property. I tried something new, but... hmm. Maybe my expectations were too high.
