This is our first return visit in a year.

Upon arrival, your son—nearly three years old now—welcomed us with a cheerful “Welcome.” His slightly shy expression was so adorable that it instantly brought a smile to our faces. Having known him since he was a baby, seeing him again each year is one of the reasons we keep coming back. This time we stayed in the Room “Hagoromo.” From the spacious veranda, we could lie back at night and gaze up at a sky full of stars. Spending time there in the pleasant evening breeze, pleasantly tipsy after dinner and drinks, felt like pure luxury. The cuisine was a summer herbal course. The mousse-like sauce made with herbal broth had a distinctive depth of flavor—I couldn’t resist asking for a spoon and enjoyed every last drop. The tomato simmered in herbal broth and served chilled also had more of a Western touch than before, making it an elegant and refreshing dish. The happy-hour herbal-syrup frappe was perfect for cooling down after our walk; it felt truly reviving. The morning coffee also tasted exceptional, so I asked about it and learned they use rare peaberry beans. Because only one bean develops instead of the usual two, the flavor is said to be more concentrated—and I was told the owner carefully roasts them from green beans himself. I was deeply impressed to see the same sincere dedication found in their herbal cuisine reflected in their coffee as well. Once again during our meal, the proprietress spoke with us warmly by our side. I started writing Reviews after last year’s visit, and looking back, I realized that Accommodations I rated highly always shared one thing: heartfelt hospitality with true attention to detail. This Accommodation embodies that better than anywhere else—and I feel that even more strongly now.

A Trip to Hida-Furukawa at the Best Accommodation

We stayed at Busuitei, a historic culinary Ryokan renowned for its herbal cuisine and long celebrated as “Hida’s VIP suite.” This long-established Ryokan has been loved by members of the Imperial family and cultural figures such as Shotaro Ikenami. After arriving, we stepped inside and were immediately struck by the grandeur of the main pillars and beams. The building was every bit as impressive as rumored. Then to our Room: impeccably cleaned, not a speck of dust. The two connected rooms were furnished with beautiful pieces, and the view from the veranda was wonderfully calming. While enjoying a “Menamomi Latte” prepared by the bright and charming young proprietress, we chatted about medicinal herbs, hoba miso, and the history of Busuitei’s architecture—she taught us so many things in an enjoyable way. At last, dinner time. They confirmed details in advance such as our aperitif preference and dining pace—service quality that truly impressed us. Each carefully crafted dish featured medicinal herbs throughout, and every bite was outstanding. You can really sense the high level of skill from the head chef and kitchen team. During the meal, we learned more about medicinal herbs from the proprietress and enjoyed conversations with the staff—it was a wonderful time. After dinner, we refreshed ourselves with their original herbal bath additive before turning in for the night. The next morning brought another elaborate and delicious breakfast. Their hoba miso originated at “Culinary Ryokan Busuitei.” At checkout, we decided to take home amber sugar candy (kohakuto) that we had tried—and loved—the day before, along with herbal tea. They also wrote us a lovely “Travel Memory Book,” took photos with us (the proprietress, young proprietress, head chef, and staff), and made our farewell feel truly special. Everyone saw us off until our car disappeared from view. Busuitei more than lived up to its reputation as a distinguished long-established Ryokan—we left completely satisfied in both body and mind. Thank you for adding such a memorable highlight to our Hida-Furukawa trip; on our way home we found ourselves saying again and again: “We want to come back.” Thank you very much.

    Enjoy an immersive herbal experience

Our family of three stayed here. We were instantly soothed by the herbal (Menamomi) latte served on arrival—it had a gentle flavor and paired perfectly with the herbal sweets. The Room is a single-story layout with three rooms including the bedroom, and when you raise the blinds, a wonderful view of the Miyagawa River opens up before you. The garden plantings are also beautiful. The Facility is just right—everything you need, nothing excessive. The Accommodation itself does not have an Onsen, but we were able to make our own herbal bath salts and enjoy a wonderfully fragrant bath in our Room. It warmed us through and through. Even the amenities, such as lotion, are made with herbs—the concept is consistent throughout and very well done. And above all, the meals were outstanding. They accommodated our difficult dietary requests in great detail, allowing our whole family to truly enjoy mealtime. Of course, everything featured herbs throughout, and we were also delighted to have Hida beef. After dinner, they delivered a relaxing blend of herbal tea to our Room for us to drink before bed. For breakfast, the highlight was definitely the hōba miso—so aromatic that it made us want more rice. There were plenty of picture books that families with children will appreciate; after our child fell asleep, we parents enjoyed them too. The staff were also incredibly kind to our child, which made them very happy—thank you so much. Because only three groups can stay per day, we hardly ran into other guests at all. The staff maintained just the right level of attentiveness, and we felt truly refreshed. On a personal note, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection in many moments during our stay—this has become an Accommodation we will definitely return to. We look forward to visiting again soon.

This is an Accommodation I would definitely like to visit again in a different season.

Delicious meals, heartfelt hospitality, a relaxing pace of time, and excellent value for money—every aspect made for a truly satisfying stay. I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much. That said, the Room we used this time was perfect in terms of atmosphere and charm, but in terms of convenience the washbasin area and bathroom were separated, and the bedroom was a bit far away... (lol) Next time, I’ll try staying in a different Room. At check-out, I asked about a nearby shop where I could buy fresh locally grown vegetables. You immediately recommended one—but it turned out to be closed on its regular day off (Thursday)! What a shame... I’ll look forward to that next time as well.

    I thoroughly enjoyed Hida.

The Accommodation was well maintained and very clean, so we were able to relax and enjoy our stay. We had the Hida beef shabu-shabu course, and everything from the appetizers onward was delicious. It was a wonderful Accommodation where you can experience the charm of Hida in a quiet town. We would love to visit again.

    A Warm Ryokan

I’m glad I decided to stay at this Ryokan. Everyone was very kind, and their attention to detail reached every corner. The place was also very clean. I was happy to be able to try hoba miso at breakfast, as this is said to be where it originated. The herbal bath and tea were also delicious, and I was very satisfied.

A Ryokan with warm hospitality and exquisite cuisine.

A warm and welcoming accommodation with delicious medicinal cuisine. Initially, my family was concerned that the medicinal cuisine might prioritize health over taste, resulting in bitter dishes. However, their worries disappeared with the very first dish served at dinner. The flavors were truly fitting for a culinary Ryokan, and both the quality and quantity left us completely satisfied as a family. The hospitality from everyone, especially the hostess, warmed not only our bodies but also our hearts beyond what the medicinal effects could achieve. Although the bath is not an Onsen, it features a herbal bath that allows you to enjoy the pleasant aroma of herbs effectively. Since the bath is quite large, I thought adding more herbs might make it even more enjoyable! We are still enjoying the herbal bath sachet we received as a souvenir after returning home—it’s just perfect for our smaller home bathtub. Even though we stayed for just one night, we deeply appreciated your warm hospitality. We will definitely stop by again when passing through this area!

    The autumn leaves were beautiful.

On clear winter mornings, mist rises in the valley, creating a stunning sea of clouds. This time, we were fortunate to witness it while also enjoying the autumn foliage. The head chef has been replaced by the young hostess's husband, introducing new menu items that blend Western elements harmoniously with previous dishes—showcasing how cuisine evolves. Surrounded by unchanging warm hospitality, we were also comforted by the growth and innocence of their two-year-old child. Upon arrival, it was delightful to mix our own bath salts with preferred scents—a thoughtful touch. Using these self-made bath salts in the Room's bathtub provided a relaxing moment even without an Onsen experience.

A journey that rejuvenates both mind and body.

The Karada Totonoe Kaiseki dinner was exactly as the young hostess described at check-in—free of any herbal bitterness, yet rich in flavor with a delicious and nourishing broth. From the moment we entered the accommodation to after check-out, we felt the warm hospitality and attentiveness of the hostess and all staff members everywhere. The room was calm, quiet, and provided a truly relaxing atmosphere where we could unwind from daily fatigue. The town of Furukawa was also serene and charming, making it a wonderful trip for my wife and me. We would love to visit again in a different season.

    It was an interesting project.

Compared to Takayama, Furukawa is a charming town with a simple and tranquil atmosphere, as it has not been overly developed as a tourist destination. Local children play in the shrine grounds, koi swim in the streams, and there is a nostalgic and relaxing flow of time. It’s my go-to place for healing when I feel tired from daily life. Known as one of the settings for the movie "Your Name," this quaint town becomes quiet after 4 PM, with shops closing early. If tourism increases like in Takayama, visitors might struggle to find dinner options. Although I hesitated to share this hidden gem before, my conversation with the young proprietress inspired me to write this review for the first time. I heard about a special herbal-themed course available only in June and couldn’t resist revisiting upon hearing the word “limited.” The description—“young herbal leaves paired with Hida beef or seasonal fish”—excited me about what kind of dishes awaited. As shown in photos, you can create your own unique flavors by combining herb-colored sushi rice with seasonal ingredients—a one-of-a-kind experience here. Herbs could be replenished during the meal, showcasing thoughtful attention to detail. Five types of herbal salts and three condiments like sansho oil were provided for guests to freely enjoy an open-ended culinary journey without any “right” answers. Conversations with the proprietress made dinner fly by. When asked if I noticed any changes since my last visit, she mentioned introducing surveys based on feedback from guests who wanted their preferences considered more closely—such as whether they’d prefer alcoholic aperitifs or adjustments to meal pacing. Some critical reviews seem tied mainly to users from Yahoo Travel who may have taken an advisory tone like “I’m saying this for your benefit.” While such opinions are valid too, I encouraged her not to dwell on them too much because accommodations listed on IKYU.com already meet high standards—and reviews there often come naturally from people wanting others to know about their positive experiences. Running an accommodation business must be incredibly challenging; however, seeing such efforts makes me want wholeheartedly support them even more. This turned out longer than expected since it’s my first review—but thank you so much for providing such wonderful experiences!

Herbal Cuisine and Warm Hospitality Accommodation

A wonderful accommodation where you can enjoy herbal cuisine. Originally a historical restaurant, the food is exceptional, and during the herbal kaiseki meal, you can have delightful conversations with the chef over the counter. The herbal liquor was a first-time experience for me, and everything from Hida beef to fish (Japanese tuna) and firefly squid was incredibly fresh and delicious. The "Issui" room has hosted notable figures such as Shusaku Endo, Shotaro Ikenami, Mokichi Saito, and even Prince Takamatsu. While it doesn't have an onsen, the private herbal bath that you choose yourself offers a relaxing experience. Even in April's harsh cold of Hida City, heating equipment and a kotatsu were provided for comfort. It’s truly a charming accommodation with few visitors—making it feel special and fortunate to stay there. The hostess was very courteous, and her eldest daughter runs a nearby Western-style restaurant based on herbs—a family worth supporting!

    The meals were very ...

The meals were very delicious this time as well. Recently, many places have fewer dishes and smaller portions, leaving you not fully satisfied. However, Kabusuitei always provides both excellent taste and generous portions. It’s an accommodation I would love to visit again.

    It was excellent.

Stayed in the Hida Beef Kaiseki Plan, Hagoromo. This was my second stay, and I was completely satisfied. It was my first time repeating a stay at the same ryokan, but it truly was an exceptional accommodation experience. The generous Hida beef steak, medicinal cuisine, room and view, bath and amenities, the experience of making bath salts—everything including souvenirs made this another unforgettable memory! I travel every 2-3 months and honestly think this is incredibly good value for money. I look forward to staying here for a third time!

    Thank you for the surprise.

Since it was our wedding anniversary, we stayed at our favorite Stays. We are truly grateful to everyone at the Property for kindly allowing us to bring the wine we received to celebrate my promotion. The surprise cake they prepared for us was also very delightful. The thing I look forward to the most when staying at a Property is the sense of relaxation. I've stayed at various Stays, but my criterion for choosing a Property is whether it calms my mind. Recently, Stays with Onsen open-air baths in the Room have become popular and tend to receive high ratings, but when I actually stay, I sometimes feel that many of them are quite similar. New Stays designed by famous architects have strong concepts and perfect service, but for some reason, I can't fully relax. This Property is said to have a history of being frequented by renowned writers for their writing, and I find myself visiting whenever I can telwork. By the way, I used to find the herbal soup bitter, but this time the balance between bitterness and broth was exquisite, and thanks to a good night's sleep, my stomach felt great in the morning. If I may say, while the lack of a menu is a fun surprise, it would be helpful to have a note on what herbs are used or a simple booklet about herbs in the Property's library. The town of Furukawa seems to have more new shops than before. I also noticed the construction for underground power lines. Watching the townscape change makes the stay at this Property even more enjoyable. Spending time at this Property allows me to escape from the busy everyday life and feel rejuvenated. Thank you very much.

    It was a wonderful trip.

From the moment I stepped into the Stays, an impressive experience began. The excitement continued with each service received... I truly had a wonderful time. The Room, the medicinal cuisine, and the service from the staff, including the proprietress, were all satisfying, providing heartfelt hospitality. Additionally, the beautiful tableware added to the luxurious experience. Although it was a one-night stay this time, I would like to stay longer next time.

My first time in Hida Furukawa

We visited with all our relatives. The inn blended beautifully into the charming townscape and was very lovely. What left a personal impression on me during our stay were the hospitality of the staff, the salt-grilled sweetfish, the Menamomi latte, and the starry sky. Regarding the hospitality, the proprietress and all the staff were courteous yet approachable, leaving a very good impression. I enjoyed having various conversations with them. Initially, the proprietress was dressed the same as the staff, so I didn't notice her, but during dinner, she introduced herself in a kimono, and that's when I realized, "Oh, she's the proprietress." I did think she had a certain presence from the start (laughs). As for the meals, of course, the Hida beef was excellent, but the freshly grilled salt-grilled sweetfish was exceptionally delicious. Also, the welcome drink, Menamomi latte, was bittersweet and unforgettable. I want to drink it again! By the way, herbal tea was also an option. We used two rooms, each in a separate building, with entrances facing each other, allowing our relatives (especially the children) to go back and forth between the rooms. This wouldn't have been possible at other hotels, so it was very nice. The room I stayed in, called Hagoromo, had a wonderful view of the river, and stepping out onto the balcony at night, I was moved by the starry sky. It was a very satisfying trip. Thank you very much!

    Pleasant accommodation

The inn and its proprietress and staff are overflowing with hospitality. There wasn't a single stressful moment during my stay, and I was heartened by the kindness received through the service, cuisine, and every interaction. In particular, despite being a historical building, it was so clean and well-maintained that I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the daily cleaning efforts.
