    Natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source

    This is the oldest hot spring in the San’in region, and it’s also a natural free-flowing Onsen—an absolute must for an Onsen enthusiast like me (laugh). The building does feel old because of its long history, but that’s part of its charm, and I hope it will continue for many years to come. The meals were a bit too much for me as an older guest; I would have preferred smaller portions with higher quality. The staff were wonderful. Thank you very much.

    The Onsen had a wond...

    The Onsen had a wonderful atmosphere and was very relaxing. I stayed here on a solo trip, and I felt that great care was taken overall, including the meals and the Room. It is a truly soothing place for those who love secluded hot springs.

    Relaxing Onsen Accommodation

    We visited again in summer as we loved our previous stay, this time to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday and enjoy crab dishes. The Onsen is excellent, and the crab cuisine is outstanding. The hostess kindly gave my wife a pair of chopsticks as a gift for her 60th birthday celebration. We were deeply touched by this thoughtful gesture.

    Highly recommended. To be clear, if you're looking for a bustling onsen town with souvenir shops like other onsen destinations, you might find it lacking. However, this accommodation was so exceptional that such things felt insignificant. Enjoy the onsen. Enjoy the meals. Enjoy the warm hospitality. This ryokan embodies the true essence of what an accommodation should be. It has become one of the places I absolutely want to revisit. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality during my stay!

    The Onsen was amazing, but...

    Stayed with my husband and mother to celebrate her 80th birthday. Thank you for the thoughtful celebratory gift. The summer oyster "Natsuki," specially ordered by my husband, was impressively large, and the chef's special ponzu sauce was absolutely delicious. Every dish was delightful, leaving us completely satisfied. The natural flowing Onsen was exceptional—possibly the best I've ever experienced. The slightly deeper bath felt incredibly relaxing, and I enjoyed multiple soaks during our stay. However, during checkout, we were asked to wait in the lobby until a car parked in front of the parking lot moved out of the way. Despite waiting for a long time, no one came to inform us or assist further; we felt forgotten as staff disappeared into the back without even seeing us off. This has never happened at any other accommodation before and left us feeling quite lonely. Although both the Onsen and cuisine were outstanding, this experience at checkout was disappointing considering how wonderful everything else had been.

    The best bath, meals, and hospitality. However...

    I have visited twice so far, and each time, I was extremely satisfied with the wonderful baths, meals, and hospitality. However, I have one request if possible. It concerns the portion size of the meals. My spouse and I are not particularly light eaters, but during our first visit, we were surprised by the large portions and found it difficult to finish everything. For our second visit, we requested "smaller portions," and you kindly suggested reducing one tempura dish. While we appreciated your thoughtfulness, what we had hoped for was not a reduction in the number of dishes but a slight decrease in overall portion sizes. We love tempura very much, so it was a bit disappointing that it was chosen as the item to be reduced. Since we have always been taught to "finish everything served," we want to enjoy every dish without leaving anything behind whenever possible. I believe there may be other guests who feel similarly; therefore, having an option for a course with smaller portions while keeping all dishes would be greatly appreciated. While I am eager to visit again soon, I am considering waiting until such an option becomes available before planning my next stay. I hope this feedback will be helpful for your future considerations!

    The Classic Japanese Ryokan

    This was an accommodation I had always wanted to visit, and my wish finally came true. It exceeded my expectations and provided immense satisfaction. Of course, the onsen was perfect in both water quality and temperature. The meals were full of a homemade feel, and even as a big eater, I was completely satisfied with both breakfast and dinner. The staff provided thorough explanations with warm hospitality that made the stay very pleasant. In recent years, many Japanese ryokans have been renovated into stylish modern spaces, losing some of their traditional charm, which I found disappointing. However, in this sense, Iwaiya is an accommodation where you can fully experience the culture of Japanese ryokans. This trip made me realize how much I hope such accommodations will remain forever into the future. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality!

    The Onsen and cuisine were excellent.

    It was my first visit, and I especially enjoyed the Onsen and the food. The Onsen, sourced from a private hot spring (source temperature 49.5°C), features a large bath with authentic charm and natural flow directly from the source. However, the faucet in the washing area is positioned low while the chairs are high, making it slightly inconvenient to use. The Room was on the second floor of a historic building, and some noise from the third floor could be heard. The desk was a traditional low table, which made my knees ache; a chair and table setup would have been preferable. The fridge in the Room was well-stocked and free to use, which was great, but unfortunately, it didn’t cool very well (and there seemed to be no way to adjust the temperature). The food exceeded expectations. The appetizers and sashimi were beautifully presented with generous portions. The sashimi platter included five types of fish (especially notable was the white squid), crab was served despite being out of season, and both tempura and steak were delicious. However, the grilled Spanish mackerel with miso sauce was served cold, and the simmered dish came out later than expected (it was listed as fourth on the menu). A bit more attention to timing and order would improve the dining experience. Alcoholic beverages were free during meals, which added to an enjoyable dining atmosphere. The dining area seemed to be a large hall divided by curtains for privacy; while you couldn’t see others directly, conversations could still be heard. Iwai Onsen is quieter compared to other hot spring towns in Tottori Prefecture but offers an authentic experience for those who appreciate traditional charm and genuine natural flow Onsen baths.

    Not suitable for elderly guests who have difficulty with stairs, but the Onsen and meals were excellent!

    The building feels slightly old, but it is a charming folk-style accommodation. The dinner was excellent, though the portions were too large to finish. The quality of the onsen water was truly wonderful. Staying in a room on the 3rd floor with only stairs might be challenging for elderly guests.

    A slightly lonely feeling on a revisit after 10 years.

    This was one of my favorite accommodations that I used to visit several times up until 10 years ago. With excellent onsen, delicious meals, and outstanding hospitality, it was a place I loved. However, as I wanted to explore other options, time passed quickly, and before I knew it, 10 years had gone by. This made me look forward even more to revisiting this time. Returning after so long to Iwaiya-san, the interior remained the same with its tasteful folk-style decor. The high-quality onsen sourced directly from beneath the premises is among the best in the San'in region. The owner, hostess, their second son, and staff were all just as they were before—welcoming us with warm and attentive service. The all-inclusive plan allowed us to freely enjoy drinks during meals or at the lounge in the evening—a feature we appreciated very much. Additionally, thanks to a Diamond privilege benefit, we could use a private bath for free—a personal highlight for me. There was also a new morning drink service (self-serve coffee/tea/vegetable juice), which wasn’t available in the past. It showed their efforts and creativity—something that impressed me. However, one thing that disappointed me was the dining experience that I had been looking forward to as much as the onsen itself. In contrast to 10 years ago when meals were served in-room or in private dining spaces, this time they were provided at table seats divided within a large hall. Although there was ample space between tables for privacy consideration, it didn’t feel relaxing due to being aware of others around us. The meal content also seemed different compared with what we remembered from 10 years ago—the Saikyo-grilled Spanish mackerel lacked flavor; moreover when opening up our final steamed dish both my spouse & myself found ourselves puzzled by its presentation & taste quality overall felt less vibrant than previously experienced where each dish appeared thoughtfully crafted visually too back then… As hearty eaters who rarely leave food behind usually yet sadly couldn’t finish everything served here now instead leaving bittersweet impressions perhaps reflecting cost-cutting measures alongside pandemic-related impacts likely contributing factors evoking mixed emotions somewhat melancholic sense lingering thereafter… In many ways perhaps adapting towards modern trends evolving into today’s style accommodation while still retaining certain aspects unchanged such checkout timing remaining fixed @10am meant rushing post-breakfast onsens hurriedly packing amidst slight wistfulness departing ultimately… Lastly sincere apologies regarding incident during dinner wherein husband accidentally knocked over beer glass causing inconvenience momentarily however deeply grateful commendable swift professional handling situation gracefully resolved leaving positive impression heartfelt appreciation extended accordingly!

    Relax and unwind from your daily fatigue!

    I enjoyed a trip with my friends while leaving my husband at home. We soaked in the most wonderful hot springs, indulged in delicious meals to our hearts' content, and had heartfelt conversations, making it a truly delightful evening.     The hot water is excellent.

    For our second stay, we chose the upgraded meal & all-inclusive plan. The highlight here is definitely the water. The 24-hour accessible bath features smooth and drinkable onsen water! (Yes, you can drink it.) We soaked in the onsen countless times and loved being able to use onsen packs as well. The meals were excellent, with delicious sashimi and meat dishes. The appetizer platter was luxurious, so if you're staying here, we highly recommend upgrading your plan for a better dining experience. Since it was an all-inclusive plan, we could enjoy coffee and other beverages anytime during our stay. This allowed us to relax in the lobby while reading magazines or browsing through pottery displays for sale at a leisurely pace. The entire hallway inside the accommodation is covered with tatami mats, making it very comfortable to walk around barefoot. This is truly an accommodation we'd love to revisit again and again. One small concern: despite being an onsen-focused accommodation, only one set of bath towels and face towels was provided per person. Since we used them multiple times throughout our stay, they didn’t have time to dry before reuse. It would be great if another set of towels could be provided or if face towels were made freely available at the bathing area.

    Both breakfast and d...

    Both breakfast and dinner were very delicious. Dinner portions were large, and I felt sorry for not being able to finish everything. The lounge offered coffee and other services, which was a nice touch. The Onsen, including the private bath, was excellent. It was my first time experiencing an Onsen where the water reached chest level even when standing. However, the shower pressure was a bit weak... A classic and charming Onsen Ryokan. I would love to visit this accommodation again if I have the chance.

    The hot spring was excellent.

    We were drawn to the natural hot spring and had a wonderful stay. As per its reputation, the water was excellent. The Room was a standard Japanese-style room as we left it up to the staff's choice, but due to heavy snow earlier, the TV wasn't working, which actually allowed us to relax more. The meals, including sashimi and Tajima beef, were incredibly delicious. Next time, we hope to visit for crab season!

    The best Onsen

    I thoroughly enjoyed the highly-rated Onsen. The food was also excellent. However, it was a bit disappointing that the walls of the room seemed thin, as I could clearly hear the TV from the next room. Even so, I was truly warmly welcomed and would like to visit again if I have the opportunity. Thank you very much.

    From the warm welcome to the heartfelt farewell, our stay was truly pleasant. Thank you for allowing us to use the lobby while waiting for the bus after check-out. The dining experience was delightful, with a bright venue and a variety of dishes that exceeded expectations, featuring plenty of local ingredients to enjoy to our heart's content. The bath lived up to its reputation with excellent water quality and a great atmosphere, though the low water pressure from the faucets was a drawback. The secondary bath also had its own charm, but the scale and hairdryer seemed to be out of order. While the building's age is understandable, the lobby felt cold, which seemed to hinder the full potential of the various services offered. As a suggestion, how about starting to cook the grilled fish for breakfast after guests are seated, serving it piping hot as a main dish later? It could leave a strong impression. This time, I believe my wife also enjoyed the stay, though we missed seeing snow (apologies to those from snowy regions). Perhaps next time!

    The Onsen and meals were very satisfying. The Room we stayed in this time was on the second floor, but the loud footsteps from the floor above and the clear voices of multiple men talking for about 10 minutes past midnight were very unpleasant as we were trying to fall asleep. Additionally, the tatami-covered corridor leading to the bath was very cold. The hospitality was excellent, and the furnishings were lovely, but I hope the yukata could be a samue-style and the shower in the bath could have stronger water pressure.

    Stays at a Hidden Hot Spring

    Stayed during a year-end trip. The interior is furnished with refined folk crafts, providing a relaxing atmosphere. The service is friendly and warm. Above all, the onsen here is wonderful. The naturally flowing water at your feet is gentle and has a silky feel. The meals use many local ingredients and were all delicious and enjoyable. Since it was an all-inclusive plan, we could enjoy drinks at ease. A property I would like to stay at again.

    Iwaiya, famous for its onsen that springs from the ground. The fresh onsen water wells up from your feet, giving you the sensation of a living onsen permeating your body. The building of Iwaiya evokes a sense of history, and you can enjoy the atmosphere while soaking in the onsen with features like stained glass in the bath. The food was delicious and excellent, just as everyone has written in their reviews. As someone who goes on onsen trips about 10 times a year, I would love to visit this property again. Thank you for a wonderful one-night stay.

    We had a wonderful time.

    The food was very delicious, and the onsen was also pleasant. It was refreshing to experience an onsen deep enough to stand in for the first time. There were no lotions or drinking water commonly found in onsens, so I recommend bringing your own if needed. The atmosphere inside the property was also lovely. It was enjoyable to look at the decorations. There are relatively many steps, so I think it's necessary to pay a little attention to your footing. Above all, the service was very polite and warm, making the stay truly pleasant. The morning coffee was also delicious. I wanted to visit during the evening alcohol service time, but I was too full, which is a bit of a regret. Haha Personally, it's a property I would like to visit again someday, so I recommend it.

    A traditional and charming Onsen Ryokan

    A stay to appreciate your daily efforts. This Ryokan, reminiscent of the good old days, features a natural hot spring. Iwai Onsen consists of two wooden three-story Onsen Ryokans and the "Yukamuri Kaikan," surrounded by tranquil rural landscapes. Having heard that it has a history of 1300 years, I imagined a hot spring town with narrow alleys and rustic buildings clustered together, but to my surprise, the two inns are located across a splendid road wide enough for buses to pass each other. I was told that after a great fire in Showa 9, the road was widened, and the townscape was rebuilt. Iwaiya is a three-story wooden building, neither too small nor too large, offering a comfortable stay that feels like visiting grandma's house in the countryside. Both dinner and breakfast were unpretentious and could be savored slowly. The bath has a tub you can stand in, but it's not very deep. Compared to the temperature (probably around 42 degrees) at the neighboring "Yukamuri Kaikan," it feels slightly cooler, but after soaking for a while, you'll warm up enough to sweat. Incidentally, those planning to enjoy a beer after bathing at "Yukamuri Kaikan" searched for a vending machine for canned beer but couldn't find one, and unfortunately, the liquor store next door was closed for the day. It's recommended to procure your drinks in advance if you have such plans. Of course, the Property has plenty of what you desire, so rest assured.
