No problem even if JR service between Atami and Odawara is suspended.

The staff seem quite young overall, but the service is excellent. The atmosphere inside the building is also chic and pleasant. On our checkout day, heavy rain caused JR service between Atami and Odawara to be suspended, but the Accommodation provided a free shuttle to Odawara Station. This apparently happens a few times a year due to typhoons and similar weather, and they offer the same support in those cases as well. The sauna in the “Shinonome” Room with an open-air bath and private sauna is outstanding. [Sauna Room] Designed for two people (three if you squeeze in). If you’re alone, it’s long enough to lie down. Two sauna mats are provided. Self löyly is possible; there is a bucket and ladle, but no aroma oils. Temperature can be adjusted via an external controller; I believe the maximum was 110°C. Possibly because of the high ceiling relative to seating height—and because heat drops easily when the door opens/closes—you only really feel strong heat while seated when set to max. When lying down it can feel slightly less hot, but frequent löyly helps compensate. No thermometer or hygrometer. Through a glass window you can see the cold bath, relaxation area, and outdoor view. A 20-minute sand timer with 5-minute markings is provided. [Cold Bath] Right next door after exiting the sauna room—open a door into the semi-open-air area—so access is very convenient. It seems to use tap water; in September it was just under 20°C. With running water it felt around 18°C. For someone like me who doesn’t like water below 15°C, it was ideal, though those who prefer ice-cold temperatures may find it not cold enough. It can fit two if necessary, but it’s basically sized for one person. [Relaxation Area] In the semi-open-air area there are two low chairs and two low tables that can also be used as footrests—again, great flow from sauna to cooling down to resting. There is also a single-person hammock. Usable even in rainy weather since it’s semi-open-air; there are trees right in front of you and you can hear a nearby stream—an excellent setting overall. Two bathrobes are provided, along with plenty of towels. [Other] Next to the cold bath in the semi-open-air area there is an open-air bath attached to the Room; it appears to be heated/filled/circulated (not free-flowing). It’s larger than the cold bath and can accommodate two people at once for bathing comfortably without feeling cramped.

    Very satisfied

From the phone call before our stay, the service was very courteous and pleasant. Many of the staff seemed young, but everyone was wonderfully attentive, and we were able to relax throughout our stay. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and it was also lovely to move to the lounge and enjoy dessert while taking in the view outside. We would definitely like to stay again.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

It was a truly wonderful Accommodation. The staff were also very kind and welcoming. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, we were able to relax and fully enjoy our stay. We would love to come again—thank you. The only thing was that the toothbrush was a little hard. The interior design was excellent.

    It was very good.

The Ryokan covered the taxi Shuttle Service for both arrival and departure, and we were also treated to a complimentary full bottle of wine. We were very satisfied and would love to stay again.

Not as satisfying as the price suggests.

Given the high price, it didn’t feel worth it. The shop only has a small selection of souvenirs, and there are no stores nearby, so I recommend buying what you need at a convenience store in advance. Having dinner slots at 5:30 p.m. and then 8:00 p.m. leaves too big a gap. I wish there were more creativity in the menu. I said breakfast at 8:00, but it was changed to 9:00. It seems this was renovated from an old Ryokan, but the stairs are steep with high steps, making it difficult for older guests with mobility issues to go up and down. When I called, an older-sounding front desk staff member answered with “What is it?” At least they could say “How may I help you?” They should improve staff training. If I had to praise something, the Onsen and the meals (especially breakfast) weren’t bad. Still, I won’t be returning.

    Meals, etc.

We stayed for one night in a Room with an open-air bath. The food was heavily seasoned, not distinctive, and felt mostly pre-made. For breakfast, the rice was plain white rice cooked in cheap-looking tableware that seemed like something sold at Daiso or a 300-yen shop, far from what you would expect for a rice pot. When we asked for water, it was served in a wine glass. Many of the non-slip tapes on the stair treads were peeling off, and the aging of the Facility was noticeable.

    Excellent

The Onsen and the food were both amazing! Dinner portions were a little small, but the taste was excellent. I would have been fully satisfied if I could have had a larger serving of rice, even just with the ochazuke.

From the moment we stepped inside, the lovely aroma created a wonderful atmosphere. The Diamond benefit Shuttle Service was also excellent. Our Room was a corner room with beautiful greenery, and we enjoyed taking baths many times. It was also great to be able to enjoy the beer in the Room whenever we wanted! Each dish was carefully prepared, and my mother, who traveled with me, was very satisfied as well. The portions were more than enough for us. We also really enjoyed the delicious clay-pot rice at breakfast. It turned into a wonderful trip.

    This is my second time.

I was satisfied with the delicious meals again this time. The value for money was also great. We also ordered an additional spiny lobster, and it was delicious. It was disappointing that we couldn’t choose abalone on the day. I’d like to stay here again.

    What a waste.

With more thorough cleaning, replacing broken items such as the basket in the tea set, improving the Room lighting, and even making simple repairs to worn tatami mats, this could feel “retro” rather than just “old.” Instead, I felt that the owner and staff do not truly take care of this Accommodation. Many of the staff seem relatively young, and the male staff—both at reception and in charge of meals—were very polite, so it seems you have what it takes to upgrade this into a wonderful Accommodation. It’s an Accommodation I really wanted to see do better.

    Perfect Accommodation for a Retreat

On a whim, I stayed for one night. It’s about a 10-minute taxi ride from Yugawara Station, and after some steep ups and downs off the main road, the Accommodation appears. As soon as I arrived, staff came to greet me at the parking lot; I left my luggage and checked in at the lounge. The interior was calm and spotless, and although the staff were young, they handled everything smoothly. Even though it was a weekend, I didn’t have to wait long before being shown to my Room. My Room was “Doppo,” which comes with an open-air bath. Since the lobby, restaurant, and Room are all on the same floor, getting around is easy. The Room itself was well maintained and very clean—I had no complaints. The bath was spacious and relaxing, with great water temperature. A few insects are to be expected in the mountains. For dinner I upgraded to the “Special Selection” for +4,000 yen per person. The portions were just right, and while nothing stood out as extraordinary, everything tasted good overall. There were multiple dishes featuring spiny lobster; for the final meat course—Wagyu with truffle and sea urchin—the ingredients were luxurious, though I personally would have preferred a more straightforward meat dish rather than piling on expensive add-ons. Still, my partner and I enjoyed chatting over drinks throughout the meal. The server was very gentlemanly as well, which made dining pleasant. Dessert is served after moving to the lobby—presumably for smoother two-seating turnover—but I actually liked it because we could relax over dessert. The private bath was also great—spacious with an interesting design. Whether 40 minutes feels short or just right probably depends on the person. Breakfast the next morning was properly done without being over-the-top; in particular, the fish was excellent. On departure day they initially planned to take us to Yugawara Station by minibus but switched to taxis due to demand—and covered the fare themselves—which ended up being a nice unexpected service. Overall, this is an Accommodation I’d consider again if I have another chance.

A couple in their 60s staying overnight

Stayed at “Hanare Soseki.” Although it was supposedly renovated in July 2020, the wooden parts of the open-air bath were rotten and gave off a musty smell, and it looked terrible—I bathed trying not to breathe through my nose. I was really looking forward to the Onsen, so this was extremely disappointing. The staff member in charge of our Room told us that the glass door leading to the terrace has no handle, so it’s a hassle to open… They know about it but won’t fix it!? I don’t know what was renovated, but with the open-air bath in that condition, guests will be let down. This Accommodation is not worth the price at all. I want them to realize that just making the front desk, lobby, and dining area look nice isn’t enough. It was a truly disappointing Accommodation full of complaints.

    For elderly guests, ...

The meals were simply delicious. The spiny lobster in particular was outstanding! Everything was well balanced, and we were very satisfied. Regarding the Facility, since bedding is futon-style, it was quite difficult for elderly guests to stand up. We felt it would be helpful if optional caregiving handrails (simple type) were available. (Going to the toilet at night was especially challenging.) There were no slippers in the room, which suggests good cleanliness, but we would have liked them to be provided if possible. (There were tabi socks, though.) The place to hang bathrobes was far too high, and we think it would be impossible for shorter guests. The complimentary drinks in the refrigerator were water and beer; since some guests cannot drink alcohol, it would have been nice to have juice as well. Towels are listed as one face towel and two bath towels, but there is no hand towel, so we would like at least two face towels instead. The service and attentiveness, as well as the Onsen, were excellent. Thank you very much.

    Sauna relaxation time

This time, I stayed in “Shinonome.” From the moment I entered the Room, the gentle sound of the river was soothing, and it felt as if time was moving slowly. The open-air bath in the guest Room features free-flowing natural hot spring water, with a soft feel that made me want to soak again and again. There was also a private sauna and cold plunge pool, and during outdoor relaxation I enjoyed an incredibly luxurious time surrounded by the sounds of nature. The entire Accommodation had a calm atmosphere, and the staff’s attentive yet unobtrusive service made it very comfortable. The meals reflected the season, and you could tell each dish was carefully prepared. It was a truly refreshing trip. I’d love to return in another season and stay in a different Room as well.

    A Relaxing Getaway for a Silver-Age Couple

The Facility felt a bit old, and the hallway had a slight odor. I was disappointed that I couldn’t watch YouTube videos properly in the Room. For the meals, I would have liked to try more creative dishes using local ingredients. The open-air bath in the Room by the river was very pleasant. The private open-air bath is spacious and nice, but having practical chairs to sit on while resting would be convenient for older guests.

    Elevator

Since it is a three-story building, I assumed there would be an elevator. There wasn’t one the last time I stayed either, but because it said the property had been renovated, I thought an elevator might have been added. However, there was still no elevator. Our Room was on the third floor and the large public bath was on the first floor, so I could only go once. Fortunately, our Room had an open-air bath, which was a relief.\n\nPlease clearly state that there is no elevator. Even elderly guests seemed to struggle to go up and down the stairs.

Next time, on a sunny day.

This was my first time visiting Yugawara Onsen. I’ve been to Izu many times, so I’d always been curious when I saw the sign at the Onsen entrance… but this time, instead of going all the way to Izu, we chose Hakone Gora Onsen and Yugawara Onsen. The water quality was completely different from Gora Onsen and very soothing, and I’m glad we chose Hakuunso. The way meals were served and the service felt a little different from other Hotels—unique in their own way—and it really came across that a lot of thought and effort had gone into it. This time it was a rainy one-night stay, but we were able to relax so much that we felt we’d like to come back for a Multiple Night Stay next time when the weather is nice. Just one thing: for dinner, since it was raining, we were seated by the window in the dining area, so I was looking forward to enjoying a window seat at breakfast on a sunny morning—but unfortunately, we were shown to a different seat than at dinner, and it was along the wall… Because I had been looking forward to it, I ended up feeling a bit disappointed. If seats change between dinner and breakfast, I wish they had told us at dinner so we could have been prepared—then I wouldn’t have started the day feeling disappointed… I think that because it happened to be raining at night this time, it made me feel that way even more.

It ranks among the top three.

Great! The hot water (gentle and warming), the meals, and the Room were all excellent. My only complaints were that there were only stairs to reach the bath, and I would have liked handrails on both sides. It’s an Accommodation I’d like to visit again.

    Wonderful

In March, my spouse and I took a trip to Izu to celebrate my birthday and to relax. We researched various Onsen Accommodations online, and chose Hakuunso because the phone service was so pleasant—Done. As we drove deeper into Yugawara guided by the car navigation system, we arrived at the entrance and parked, welcomed by an early-blooming Ashikaga cherry tree in full bloom. Stepping out of the car, the sound of the river was soothing, and the entrance with its impressive noren curtain looked exactly like in the photos. A male staff member quickly came over, carried all our luggage, and escorted us to the lounge. We checked in at a counter overlooking the river while relaxing with the spicy scent of potpourri. The welcome drink made with local mandarin oranges and ume was delicious as well, and their very polished service had us completely satisfied from the start. Our Room impressed us with its spaciousness and comfort beyond expectations. The only downside was that while the flush toilet area was stylish, it felt retro and a bit inconvenient to use. The indoor bath was also a fine hinoki bath, but we especially enjoyed the roofed terrace’s free-flowing open-air bath fed directly from the source spring water (gensen kakenagashi) and sauna—they were very comfortable. Breakfast and dinner were served with great care; both taste and portion size were flawless. Overall it was calm throughout, with a wonderfully understated yet stylish “hideaway” feel. Thank you very much.

    Last-Minute One-Night Stay

I made a Reservation the day before and stayed one night with my son. I booked the day before and stayed one night with my son. To sum it up, it was amazing! Due to our schedule we could only stay one night, but it was so relaxing that we’d love to come back for a Multiple Night Stay. The Onsen, meals, and lounge were all wonderful. Our Room also had great sunlight, and the cherry blossom view from the Onsen was breathtaking! My son loved it too! Next time, we’d like to visit again for a Multiple Night Stay.

    The sauna was amazing!

This was our first time staying in the Room called Shinonome, which comes with a private open-air bath and sauna. The Room had just been renovated, and it was amazing. Since I love saunas, having a löyly sauna in the Room along with a cold plunge was perfect—I felt completely refreshed about four times. Relaxing outside while listening to the river’s gentle flow was also incredible. The meals have improved as well—both presentation and taste were better than before, and the sashimi was especially delicious. I can’t wait to come back for another reset!

    We were extremely satisfied.

We stayed for one night from March 4 to 5, 2026. We were very satisfied with everything, including the meals and the Onsen. The staff were kind and courteous, and we had a very pleasant stay. My wife was especially pleased with the explanations provided by the staff member in charge during dinner. If we have the opportunity, we would love to stay again.

Relax, unwind, and enjoy a wonderful holiday.

We had a wonderful two-day stay enjoying delicious meals. We were very satisfied with the lovely dishes that let us savor the season with our eyes as well. It’s a retro Ryokan, but we were very pleased with the attentive care from the staff. Since there are no stairs, my friend who doesn’t walk much seemed to have a bit of difficulty—though it was just enough to be good exercise. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

    Your First Yugawara Onsen Experience

The service, Room, and Onsen were all excellent. What I especially loved were the dinner and breakfast—they were truly delicious. Every dish tasted great and was beautifully presented. Each piece of sashimi was served individually on its own dish, with matching garnishes inside, which felt very stylish. The beef was tender and well seasoned. After the meal, I was also able to relax in the lounge with a cup of coffee.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We stayed on a great-value Plan, so the cost performance was excellent. The staff kept a comfortable distance, and the service was very good. Some Reviews seem divided about the portion sizes, but this time it was just right and delicious. The terrace light in the Room didn’t turn on (we couldn’t find the switch), so it was dark. The coffee milk was gone (changed to Yakult), which was a bit disappointing. In a Room with only one TV, the reception/signal seemed poor and it sometimes cut out. We would like to visit again.

The bathroom in the room was spacious and nice.

The overall cost-performance was excellent as I used the last-minute discount. The room's open-air bath was spacious and very relaxing. It would be even better if the window facing the bath were a bit cleaner. The staff provided pleasant and attentive service, which was great. Regarding check-in, although it was busy, it would have been better if I could go to the room without much waiting. I would love to visit this accommodation again if I have another opportunity.

    Parent-Child Trip

It was a very lovely accommodation surrounded by greenery. The woman who guided us was kind and had a wonderful smile. She even offered to carry our luggage when heading to the room. The room allowed us to relax while listening to the sound of a stream and birds chirping, sitting comfortably on the sofa. The onsen baths were all at perfect temperatures and felt incredibly soothing, helping us unwind from fatigue. The meals were beautifully presented with attention to every detail, almost like art. The portions were just right as well. Breakfast was delightful, making for a refreshing morning with such an exquisite meal to start the day. Since we could choose a later breakfast time, we enjoyed sleeping in longer than usual in the morning. The tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet) was exceptionally delicious—unlike any I’ve ever had before! The man who served our meals maintained just the right level of interaction, making our dining experience enjoyable. Surrounded by greenery, relaxing in onsen baths with pleasant aromas, and receiving heartfelt hospitality gave me renewed energy to keep going. I would love to stay here again!
