    Nara Trip

On our way back from a trip to Nara, we stopped by Uji, where we have relatives. It was our first time staying overnight in Uji, and we looked forward to this Accommodation near the Uji River. The staff were very kind, even allowing us to park our relatives’ car—thank you very much. The bath was wonderful, and we could also see the Uji River, so we were able to relax at a leisurely pace. We heard that the property is scheduled for rebuilding and are looking forward to it. Thanks to this stay, we were able to fully enjoy Uji.

    The service was disappointing.

I stayed here expecting a renovated Room. I had already understood from Reviews that the building itself is aging, and the price reflected that, so I was looking forward to at least having a comfortable Room. However, what surprised me as soon as I entered was the level of cleanliness. Dust had accumulated in many places throughout the Room, and there was even visible dust on top of the telephone. The Room itself has been nicely renovated, but the lack of basic cleaning really dampened my mood. I didn’t feel any consideration for helping guests stay comfortably. There may be reasons such as staff shortages, but at minimum, higher-priced Rooms should be properly maintained. What was even more disappointing was dinner. Even though it was a day with few guests, the dishes took a long time to arrive; it took nearly an hour and a half just to reach the rice course. The serving pace was far too slow, and while waiting I became both hungry and mentally exhausted—by the end, I could barely eat any of the rice or dessert. Since dinner had such good ratings, I had especially been looking forward to it, which made it all the more disappointing. This was not an inexpensive stay, so given my expectations, the gap between expectation and reality felt significant. If you are considering staying here in the future, I recommend choosing with the understanding that “renovated” does not necessarily mean “comfortable.”

    By the Uji River

The view overlooking the Uji River was wonderful. The large public bath felt surprisingly small. While the building does show its age, the “Semi-Open-Air Bath Deluxe Twin” Room was luxurious.

We stayed in a Room ...

We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath. We usually choose a Room with an open-air bath when we travel. Let me be frank. In terms of the balance between the price and what you get—value for money— it seemed that the other guests staying that day were not in Rooms with an open-air bath, and I felt that those Rooms might be more reasonably priced. My companion went to the large public bath at night, but didn’t feel the need to go again in the morning. The meals were very delicious!

    Visited on New Year's Day.

We stayed in Kyoto, a city often visited for day trips, on New Year's Day. The front desk staff were kind and helpful without being overbearing, and they assisted us whenever we had questions. The ryokan was well-equipped overall. Its location is convenient, with Byodoin Temple and the approach road nearby. The room was not new but very clean. It included a semi-open-air bath where we could relax comfortably. There was also a large public bath, making it ideal for family trips; however, as there were many international guests in groups, it sometimes felt crowded in the public bath. The private bath in our room provided a more relaxing experience. The meals were delightful—New Year's dishes that were visually appealing and delicious! Most notably, the eggs at breakfast were incredibly tasty! I would love to have their meals again. However, during dinner service near the kitchen area, we overheard some staff complaints or unmotivated remarks; improving attentiveness to guest interactions would enhance the experience further.

Accommodation ideal for those who want to thoroughly enjoy Byodoin Temple.

We visited to enjoy the special nighttime admission at Byodoin Temple during the autumn foliage season on a Friday night. Usually, you can enter Byodoin from the South Gate, which is about a 5-minute walk from the accommodation, but this route does not pass by the shops near the main gate. For nighttime admission, entry is through the main gate, which takes about 10 minutes on foot. However, most of the nearby shops within walking distance of the accommodation close around 6 PM. Since dinner at this accommodation is served between 6 PM and 8 PM and we wanted to enjoy nighttime admission, we ended up struggling to find dinner options. In the end, we drove to Byodoin for nighttime admission and used a parking lot near the main gate before heading to a chain restaurant in town afterward—quite disappointing. It would have been nice if there were bento boxes for nighttime visitors or dinner plans with slightly adjusted times available. The building itself had a charming historical atmosphere without feeling outdated. The renovated room was clean and raised our expectations high. The staff's service was polite but felt very manual-based without much helpful guidance or a welcoming vibe. In particular, one male staff member in the lobby ignored our greeting in passing during breakfast time; perhaps he was actually a taxi driver inside? If so, allowing them into guest areas might not be ideal. What made this stay especially unpleasant and regretful was that our room's bathroom had low water pressure with only trickling water flow—and when trying late-night bathing—the temperature never rose above body heat levels! It left us cold & miserable enough even considering checking out overnight altogether! While their third-floor public bath facilities were good overall—if guests must bring towels from their rooms—it’d help having baskets provided instead too. Despite sounding like complaints throughout here—the free-range eggs served fresh during breakfast tasted amazing enough turning things back toward smiles again eventually! Thank you kindly nonetheless!

The flow of the river is constant and unending.

The view from the room was excellent. It was a convenient accommodation for exploring the Uji River area and provided a quiet stay. I rated the facility, including its location, as 5.

The facility is excellent for inbound travelers.

The accommodation is newly built, the room is spacious and sufficient, and it seemed to have many foreign guests. Since there was a meeting nearby, I had dinner elsewhere and only had breakfast here. I arrived at JR Uji Station around 7:30 PM, and although the accommodation had informed me in advance that there was a taxi stand at the station, taxis were hard to come by. Even after contacting the accommodation and the local taxi company directly, no progress was made, but luckily, one came after waiting for about 30 minutes. It seems to take about 20 minutes on foot from JR Uji Station to the accommodation, so walking might be a better option if you have light luggage and it's still bright outside. After checking in, when I entered the room and tried to make tea, I found no tea leaves in the container, so I called the front desk to bring some. The bath (not an onsen) had lingering odors from previous foreign guests, so I moved between tubs while bathing. This ryokan is located along the Uji River, close to Byodoin Temple, making it an excellent location for exploring Uji.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

We chose this place as we were traveling by car and staying in Uji. The view is absolutely stunning. While the building shows its age, it is very well-maintained, and the large public bath exceeded our expectations. It would have been even better if the sauna was available in the morning as well. The air conditioning in the room directly hit the futon area, which was a bit challenging. In hindsight, we should have moved the futon closer to the entrance area. Uji at night is peaceful with fewer tourists and truly charming. We enjoyed Byodoin Temple early in the morning and visited many shops along the promenade and shopping street. Compared to before, there are more international visitors now, but I still love Uji for its relaxing tea culture. I look forward to visiting again someday! Thank you!

Ideal for visiting Byodoin Temple, located in a quiet setting.

I chose this Hotel because it is close to Byodoin Temple, and despite being along the river, it is tucked away in a quiet area with few tourists. The atmosphere was unexpectedly peaceful with lots of greenery. The Room was spacious, offering a view of the Uji River right outside the window, and the private bath was incredibly relaxing. Although I booked a Plan with breakfast only, I enjoyed delicious Kyoto cuisine at Tatsumiya nearby for dinner. The front desk staff were kind and provided excellent service. If you're staying in Uji for one night, I highly recommend this Hotel.

The room by the river was nice, but I couldn't open the window for ventilation because a lot of bugs got inside the screen, which was unpleasant. There is no Shuttle Service from the station, making it inconvenient. The food was delicious.

    Relaxing Accommodation

Relax and enjoy the view of the Uji River from your Room. Surrounded by vibrant fresh greenery and the chirping of birds from all around, you will feel refreshed. The Kyoto Kaiseki cuisine by Tatsumiya collaboration was also exceptional. Thank you very much, and we look forward to visiting again.

The room offered a stunning view of the serene surroundings, providing a relaxing atmosphere. Tourist attractions were within walking distance, and we also enjoyed Uji sweets. The parking lot was conveniently located right in front of the accommodation, making luggage transport hassle-free and allowing us to use the car multiple times during our stay. The facility featured an observation bath and a large public bath, while the room included a private bathroom with a separate toilet for added convenience. My family was very satisfied with their stay at this accommodation, which gave me peace of mind as well. Although we had to check out early in the morning, we were accommodated without any issues. This time, our stay was before the cherry blossoms bloomed; however, I believe each season offers its own unique charm. If given another opportunity, I would love to visit during different seasons to experience them all!

Despite it being a busy Saturday, we were allowed to park until 4 PM after checking out. We visited Tofukuji and Daigoji for the autumn leaves, and then returned to Uji to visit Byodoin and Ujigami Shrine. We are very grateful, thank you very much.

    Hospitality

It is advertised that there is a Shuttle Service to Uji Station, but in reality, you are told to come by taxi because the driver's time is not available. A welcome drink also seems to be prepared, but I couldn't use it without being informed.

    Uji Sightseeing

The room has been renovated, but the overall atmosphere still feels old. While the hardware might improve with renovations, the outdated feel of the software seems unchanged. If you can appreciate this as charm, you can enjoy a relaxing stay in an excellent location. Considering the accommodation cost, I personally regret not staying at a better accommodation in Kyoto or Nara and visiting Uji from there instead.

The view from the room was wonderful, and the room itself was spacious and clean. Everyone provided courteous service and responded flexibly. It might be a matter of personal preference, but I was concerned that the bed was a bit firm.
