I’m truly disappointed.
Despite the wonderful hot spring water, the meals were disappointing. I have already shared this with the president. The seasoning made it impossible to taste the ingredients at all—too strong, too salty, and lacking proper dashi. It felt like an old-fashioned Onsen Ryokan in the worst sense. These days, lighter seasoning is the norm. If this could be of any help and you would like my input, I can introduce Accommodations known for excellent dining, based on 30 sampling visits per year. Why not use them as a reference? I look forward to hearing from you. Although I somehow feel I may not receive a reply... Wishing you continued success.

Courtyard
It rained heavily all day. Still, from the Room we watched the large courtyard pond, the rush of water running from the roof into the gutters, and droplets falling one by one from the pine needles. Since the bath in the Room also opens onto the courtyard, we were able to enjoy that atmosphere there as well.

It was the best Ryokan I’ve stayed at recently.
I stay at about 10 Onsen Ryokan a year, and this was the best. Even the president came to greet us.

The hot spring water quality is excellent!
The Onsen water quality was outstanding! I tried several other Onsen facilities for a kind of “Onsen tasting,” and this Ryokan’s bath was the one that left my skin feeling smooth after soaking. The staff were also courteous and left a very positive impression.

The hot water is excellent.
The Onsen was simply wonderful. The large public bath, private bath, and indoor bath were all 100% free-flowing from the source, gentle on the skin, and deeply relaxing. The private bath in particular was very comfortable. The meals were also delicious. The Shinshu beef wasn’t overly fatty, and I was happy that even though I ate more than I usually do, it didn’t feel heavy. The Room had a cozy retro feel as well. Thank you very much.

Highly satisfying free-flowing Onsen straight from the source
Thank you very much for taking care of us on our first stay. Ueda Togura Onsen seems to have been quite prosperous in the past, but today it is a calm and charming Onsen town with a different atmosphere from those days. What stands out most about this area is, without question, the outstanding quality of the hot spring water. This Accommodation is small and intimate with just five Rooms, yet it offers a large public bath separated by gender, a private bath overlooking the garden with a pleasant breeze, and an in-Room (semi-)open-air bath filled with a gentle sulfur scent. All of them are luxurious 100% free-flowing natural spring water (no added water), and the bathing facilities were truly excellent. In addition, both dinner and breakfast are extremely substantial—so much so that you will be completely full thanks to the wide variety of dishes. The chef (from the Showa era generation) prepares each meal with great care, and they are served privately in each guest Room on the second floor—an indulgent touch. The seasoning was light and vegetable-forward, well suited for seniors or guests who are mindful of their health. That said, even so, we felt the portions were too large; removing three to four items such as appetizers, fried dishes, or simmered dishes would still be more than enough. We would also appreciate some improvement in how rice is served. It is brought in a small wooden tub, but the rice becomes slightly sticky and clumps together. Rice is an important part of any meal here in Japan, so we hope you can consider ways to serve it at its best. The fifth-generation owner and the female staff work seamlessly together to create a warm, traditional family-run feel that puts guests at ease. The building is a 45-year-old sukiya-style structure; however, it is kept very clean throughout. Given its reasonable price and spaciousness for what you pay, we did not mind its age at all. One area showing wear was the washbasin counter—renovating it when budget allows could greatly improve first impressions. As someone who loves Onsen stays, this has become one of my top candidates to return to. I look forward to visiting again someday—thank you very much in advance.

The Onsen was very nice, but.
I stayed on a Friday night in a Room with an open-air bath (Onsen). I had wanted to visit this Facility for many years, which made it all the more disappointing. The staff were kind, but I’d like to share a few points I noticed in hopes of future improvement. Overall, it felt like the Accommodation rate did not match the service and the condition of the property. Inside the building The attendants walk through the hallways in tabi socks, while guests (including us) wear slippers. The attendants also enter guest Rooms wearing their tabi. I couldn’t help noticing that their tabi looked a bit dirty. At an Accommodation in this price range, I imagine many guests would be concerned about this. Guest Room We were in a corner Room surrounding a garden. As it got cold, we turned on two heaters. Wondering if they were actually working, we checked them and were shocked to find that part of the wall around one warm-air unit had collapsed. The other heater was near the entrance; when we looked closer, there was quite a large spider web. Had this Room not been used for some time? Meals Overall everything was quite salty. The menu listed “Head Cook” rather than “Chef,” which made me wonder whether meals are prepared on-site. It felt more like dishes were simply reheated and served—I didn’t get any sense that food was being freshly prepared nearby. There were also many stain-like marks on the walls of the dining area. Since it is essentially a banquet hall divided into sections, it didn’t feel private at all. My husband had another Accommodation booked and canceled his Reservation because I recommended staying here instead, so I truly felt sorry. The only highlight was the Onsen—it was wonderful.

I like hot water.
Only five rooms in total. We asked about booking the entire property for a family gathering (five households including grandchildren), but infants were not allowed. If that is the Facility’s policy, it can’t be helped, but… Since it’s a Japanese-style room with beds, it would have been helpful to have a desk and chair for business use. They kindly accommodated our request and set them up on short notice. We are grateful for their flexible response.

Wonderful Onsen
I had a very relaxing solo trip. The staff’s smiles and conversations, and the delicious meals, and the free-flowing Onsen straight from the source made my skin feel silky smooth. It was a wonderful trip, and I would love to stay at this Accommodation again.

First night
I visit Nagano Prefecture several times a year, and this Accommodation had caught my attention after reading the Reviews. The parking lot is beside the Accommodation; it was spacious and easy to park. Since you have to step outside to reach the private bath, I don’t think I would use it in bad weather. The large public bath probably fits up to three people. I went in after dinner, and the open-air bath was beautiful—the lighting inside the cypress tub changed colors. Our Room also had free-flowing hot spring water at a comfortable temperature, which was very relaxing. I had been worried after seeing in Reviews that the dining area was on the second floor, but I mentioned at Reservation that I have trouble with my legs, and they kindly arranged seating for us on the first floor—thank you very much. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. On our way there, we noticed a soba restaurant that interested us; it seems to be very popular, so I was happy that we could order their soba pudding through the Accommodation. The proprietress and staff were very pleasant and courteous, and we had a wonderful time. There were historic items displayed throughout the property, which was a delight to see. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

I’m glad I stayed here.
I stayed here after a business trip. Even an Accommodation that costs 300,000 yen per night is not necessarily perfect, and there are usually one or two things you would want improved. With this Accommodation, none of that mattered—I’m simply glad I stayed.

The best smiles and silky-smooth hot spring water—an Accommodation I’d love to stay at again.
From the owner to all the staff, their smiles and friendly conversations made this a relaxing and enjoyable trip. The Onsen, with a faint sulfur scent, has wonderful water quality that leaves your skin silky smooth just by soaking. If the meals felt a bit more upscale and the Facility—such as the electrical systems—were gradually updated, I think it would become an even more flawless Accommodation! Thank you very much for your warm hospitality.

Second time
It had been a while since my last visit. I thought I could have meals in the Room, so it was my mistake for not confirming properly. The amenities could have been slightly better. I appreciated being able to choose a yukata. Thank you very much!

A relaxing accommodation.
Despite the facility not being new, various thoughtful efforts have been made. The cleanliness was impeccable, the president personally greeted us, and the staff provided bright and courteous service, leaving us very satisfied. We could feel the management's dedication firsthand, which left a positive impression. The Onsen was excellent—gentle and delightful to enjoy multiple times without feeling fatigued from soaking. However, we were disappointed with the meals. While taste preferences are subjective (we found them too strong and overly sweet), what stood out negatively was the miso soup—it did not meet expectations for something served in a kaiseki meal. We heard that the menu changes every two months; we look forward to future updates!

Premium Onsen
Enjoy the pure onsen experience with natural flowing hot springs. The octagonal private bath is truly relaxing, and the room bath was so enjoyable that we used it multiple times without feeling overwhelmed by the water, as the spring quality suited our skin perfectly. Meals were adjusted to a smaller portion upon request, which was just right and very helpful. We look forward to staying again if we can complete the reservation next time.

The bath is excellent.
The room was turtle-themed. There is a tea room with an excellent atmosphere, but it might not be usable. The baths, including indoor baths, open-air baths, and private room baths, were fantastic. I would love to use them again.

Highly satisfied.
The Facility was as described in the Reviews, so there were no issues. However, I think it would have been better if the amenities were of slightly higher quality. That said, I was very satisfied with the food and Onsen, and the warm hospitality was truly comforting. I will make a Reservation again when visiting Nagano. To all the staff, keep up the great work! I will come back again.

The Onsen is wonderful.
We stayed as a group of five women. The private baths were reserved for us twice, allowing us to relax and enjoy our time. The water was soft, smooth, and had a gentle sulfur scent—absolutely perfect. As explained, the water here doesn’t cause fatigue no matter how many times you bathe in it. We enjoyed the open-air bath in the Room, the private baths, and the separate men’s and women’s baths. The only slight inconvenience was that there was no handwashing area in the toilet, so we had to go to the sink to wash our hands. We also loved the cute, colorful yukatas provided, which made us feel youthful and cheerful. Thank you very much!

We had a wonderful time.
We escaped from the heat of our home to a cool accommodation. With only 5 rooms, we were able to enjoy our stay without encountering other guests. The room included a bedroom, a living area, and chairs by the window, providing a relaxing atmosphere. The private open-air bath in the room was at just the right temperature, offering soothing water that felt like being wrapped in a warm blanket. This onsen is known for being gentle on the body, allowing us to bathe with peace of mind. Dinner was served in a private dining room and featured local fermented ingredients that were both delicious and visually appealing. Breakfast also incorporated fermented ingredients, which gave us energy for an active day of sightseeing. The staff at the accommodation were cheerful and kind throughout our stay. During dinner, even the owner stopped by to greet us and share stories about the onsen, making it an enjoyable experience. If requested in advance, they can prepare onsen manju (steamed buns), so there’s no need to rush out to buy them elsewhere. It was our first visit to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen but this wonderful accommodation left such an impression that we would love to return again!

A relaxing accommodation.
This accommodation has a limited number of rooms, so it was difficult to secure a stay, but I finally managed to book. The facility is old, which I was aware of beforehand, so it didn’t bother me much. However, although not mandatory, having to flush the toilet in the room twice every time is something I hope can be improved. The bathroom in the room is spacious enough for two adults to relax comfortably. While there isn’t much of a view from the bath, it allows for a peaceful soak. The natural hot spring with high-quality sulfur water from Togura Kamiyamada is always satisfying no matter how many times I visit. There was also a private bath available for 45 minutes free of charge; however, since we prefer slightly cooler temperatures, we found the bath in our room sufficient. It would be nice if there were a late check-out plan available as we’d love to enjoy soaking in the morning after breakfast at a more leisurely pace. The meals seemed thoughtfully prepared using local ingredients from Nagano and incorporating seasonal touches. The variety included dishes like grilled Alps beef on ceramic plates and tempura made with young sweetfish (ayu). Breakfast wasn’t extravagant but offered delicious options ranging from salads to simmered dishes. The staff were friendly and created an atmosphere where we could truly relax. I would love to revisit as an ideal retreat accommodation again!

The Onsen was excellent and very satisfying.
The room offers a view of a well-maintained courtyard rather than a grand landscape, and the Chikuma River is not visible. However, once you soak in the onsen, such concerns fade away. The natural alkaline sulfur spring with free-flowing water has an ideal temperature and is perfect for sensitive skin. You can feel your immune system being revitalized. Dinner was the <Melt-in-Your-Mouth Shinshu Alps Beef 240g Plan> shabu-shabu course, which was incredibly delicious but too much for even three big eaters to finish (the regular course also seems to have generous portions). Both the room and hallways were spotless, and with only a few guest rooms, the accommodation was wonderfully quiet. It allowed us to relax and unwind at our own pace. The staff were all kind, everything essential was provided, and it felt like experiencing the essence of an onsen ryokan. We were truly satisfied. We want to visit again—no, we will!

Wonderful Onsen.
Thank you for your hospitality. The Facility, although somewhat old, is well-cleaned and beautiful. Above all, the natural hot spring, without added water or heating, and the Room with an open-air bath are wonderful. The temperature was just right, and I was able to enjoy it many times. Being in the middle of winter, I could stay in for a long time. The quality of the spring was also excellent, allowing me to truly refresh and indulge in luxury. Regarding meals, I was informed of Room service, but was directed to a dining area, which made me wonder. However, I was guided to a Room on the second floor, and it made sense! In the morning, being on the second floor, the view from the Room was great, and I could enjoy a calm meal in a private Room. Both dinner and breakfast were elaborate, with a wide variety of delicious dishes. Great value for money. I would like to use it again. Thank you for your hospitality.

Relax and unwind with a soothing Onsen and delicious cuisine for a leisurely day.
A very lovely property, with open-air baths in each room, the rooms are spacious enough, and the food is plentiful, making it more than worth the price. Enjoy the onsen in your room freely, relish the large public bath, and also use the private bath. Dinner is plentiful enough to satisfy even an adult male, and it's very delicious (especially the shabu-shabu meat), leaving you so full that you can just relax in your room and have a good night's sleep. In the morning, soak in the room's onsen again, enjoy a delicious breakfast, soak in the onsen once more, and then check out. Being a historical property, some aging is inevitable. However, I think the property is kept very clean. If someone finds fault with this, they might not be suited for using such a historical ryokan. The staff's hospitality is very polite and pleasant. Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is a bit of a challenging location if you don't research the surrounding environment beforehand, but Ryotei Takano-san allows you to spend a leisurely and satisfying day with just the property's onsen and meals. Highly recommended.

Exceeded expectations, would love to visit again!
I travel several times a year, choosing a property with a hot spring flowing directly from the source and a Japanese-Western style room with a bath (as a bed is essential). This time, I stayed at a ryokan for the first time in a while because the Japanese-style room also had a bed. In this price range, the food (table seating in the dining area) and the onsen were wonderful, and I thought the company was making efforts in various ways. The octagonal private bath, which is considered auspicious, was also well-maintained, and I was able to enjoy a pleasant bath. I also liked that no one entered the room from check-in to check-out. (It is common for ryokans to enter the room for cleaning, etc., but I am not fond of this.) This comfortable distance is pleasant. The only disappointment was the bed. It is movable, so it can't be helped, but it is a bit soft and moves easily. I liked the soy sauce beans served at breakfast, so I inquired about them. I had given up on buying them online as I didn't have time to go shopping, but the property kindly shared their stock with me. (I enjoy them every day.) Such attentive service is unique to a long-established ryokan. I was able to enjoy the heartfelt hospitality of the staff, which was not just by the manual, for the first time in a while. I would like to visit again, and next time, I would like to have a leisurely multiple night stay.

Satisfied even on my second stay.
This was my second stay, and I was very satisfied. My room was on the first floor, and meals were on the second floor. If possible, I would prefer to stay on the second floor for a better view, so please fix the indoor bath quickly so that we can stay there.

The hot water was good.
It is located more on the side of a public road than in a hot spring town, and the noise is noticeable. Even when parking or entering the premises, no one comes out. We were taken to the furthest room, called "Kame." There is a tea room, which adds a touch of elegance. The bath in the room is just the right size, and the water feels smooth on the skin. The large public bath is not exactly large. It was nice to be able to use the private bath for 45 minutes. There are plenty of yukatas and towels, which is convenient. The bags for dirty or wet clothes are also appreciated. We received a call saying the dinner location had changed, but it was disappointing as we were relaxing. Couldn't it have waited? I was disappointed with the behavior and manners during dinner. I thought the dessert would be served after finishing the meal, but... The president came to greet us during the meal, but there was a misunderstanding that we were returning guests. I honestly told him it was our first visit. Nevertheless, he was polite and left a good impression. I was surprised to receive his business card. He also came to greet us in the morning. Regarding the explanation for the next morning during dinner, I was surprised to hear that there were three groups at the same time, and it was first-come, first-served. This was a first. The bed in the room is old, so it sinks and is narrow. The room is relatively spacious and quiet, but I could hear conversations from another room from the outdoor bath.
