Traditional Onsen Accommodation
I enjoyed soaking in Zao Onsen’s strongly acidic, milky-white water with a distinct sulfur scent—this is what an Onsen should be like. Since it’s an old building, there are countless flaws if you start pointing them out, so I stayed while telling myself that’s just how it is. The staff work hard, but not at a level that truly impresses. The meals featured many local specialties and were good, but the rice—the most important part—was too firm at dinner and far too soft at breakfast. This Accommodation is recommended for those who love Onsen.

It was a comfortable stay.
Over many years, by prioritizing the Onsen on a limited site, it has become a Ryokan with quite a few steps and level changes. Even so, every effort has been made to preserve the wonderful natural hot spring source, and the staff were truly kind—I hope they continue their great work.

Thank you for your support!
The acidic Onsen I’d heard about was amazing! The large public bath was not crowded, so I could soak and relax at my own pace. At night, the wind and snowstorm were intense, and dust from the attic blew in through drafts from gaps in the room. This triggered my house dust allergy symptoms. I understand it was a difficult time of year to clean due to the seasonal change, but this was disappointing. The meals were very delicious, but dinner in particular was quite large—I couldn’t finish one dish that came after the main meat course. Offering an option to choose might be a good idea.

Delicious Accommodation
Both breakfast and dinner featured well-seasoned dishes. The rice was delicious, and I even had seconds. It felt like going back to my younger days as I finished everything.

The facility is old, but the service is excellent.
We stayed in a detached room this time. It was too spacious for just two people, but it would be enjoyable with a larger group. As many have mentioned, the historic wooden building has areas where air conditioning cannot be installed, so we had to keep the fan running and deal with high humidity. Despite some inconveniences in the room, the thoughtful service from the front desk and dining staff made up for it. The meals were very delicious. The private Onsen was free-flowing, with a temperature of 50°C, so adding water from the shower made it just right to soak in. It was a great Onsen experience. Next time, I’d like to stay during winter!

The room and Onsen were excellent!
We stayed in a separate building called "Hinagura." It is a standalone house utilizing a traditional storehouse, which seemed to have been a spacious café annexed to the ryokan in the past. Although it was just the two of us, with beds and toilets on both the first and second floors, it offered more than enough space for two couples to stay comfortably. The semi-open-air bath attached to the storehouse is said to be the only private bath among all Zao Onsen facilities. It was an incredibly luxurious experience. The meals were perfectly portioned for those in their 50s, and both the taste and presentation were exceptional.

It was wonderful.
The Onsen, meals, service, and atmosphere were all excellent, and I’m glad I stayed here! However, I did notice that the door in the changing room didn’t close properly and was slightly open, and the Room door was also tilted and left a small gap. While I wished for better privacy, considering it’s a 300-year-old traditional building, it’s understandable. Everything else was wonderful, so I gave it 5 stars. (If these issues bother you, you might want to reconsider.)

Zao Onsen
This was my first visit to Zao Onsen. The detached accommodation, Hinagura, is the only one in Zao Onsen with a private open-air onsen directly sourced from the hot spring, which was the deciding factor for my reservation. The water in the private open-air onsen in the room was excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. I would love to stay here again when I visit Zao Onsen next time.

It was a charming, traditional Ryokan!
I thought I had reserved a basic room, but for some reason, I was given a corner suite. Nothing was mentioned, so does that mean I was upgraded? The building is old but did not feel unclean. Many of the staff were from overseas, but everyone provided polite and dedicated service. The only concern was that the air conditioner being a window fan allowed relatively large insects to come in through the open window, but it made me realize how rich in nature this onsen location is! The meals were very delicious. When I entered the onsen in the evening, it was extremely hot, but during my morning bath, it was at a perfect temperature and felt very pleasant. I had a wonderful time. Thank you very much!

The Onsen in Zao is excellent.
I have visited Zao several times. The Onsen is wonderful with its free-flowing hot spring water. This was my first time staying at Takamiya. As mentioned on the website, there are indeed many stairs, which were honestly a bit challenging for an older body like mine. The meals were very delicious.

I stayed at the Deta...
I stayed at the Detached Hinagura Accommodation. Although I felt some unease during a pre-arrival phone confirmation with a staff member, their service upon arrival was courteous and attentive. The detached building, utilizing a traditional storehouse, is the only accommodation in Zao Onsen featuring an en-suite open-air onsen sourced directly from the hot spring, offering exceptional bathing convenience. The room was clean and well-stocked with yukata and towels. The building is spacious but old, resulting in multiple steps, steep stairs, and poorly fitted windows. Particularly concerning were broken window locks and the lack of screens on some windows on the first floor, which felt slightly insecure. While other aged aspects were acceptable, addressing these window issues would be appreciated. There was no air conditioning; however, being in a highland area meant that outside air was cool enough to compensate. At night it became chilly with open windows; summer daytime temperatures might be worth considering. The private open-air onsen attached to the room does not offer scenic views due to its location but did not feel necessary for enjoyment. However, improving privacy through better enclosure design would enhance comfort. Despite some concerns mentioned above, the allure of having an en-suite open-air onsen outweighed them significantly. Having stayed at similar accommodations across Japan before, I found this one’s luxurious quality among top-tier domestic standards for private outdoor baths. The water's properties made long soaks challenging but irresistibly inviting for repeated use—no mosquitoes or unpleasant insects were noticed either. Dinner featured many local specialties and was deliciously satisfying; knowledgeable serving staff enriched our understanding of regional culture while making dining enjoyable overall! Breakfast also impressed us with variety & tastefulness alike! Like many places nowadays employing foreign staff members alongside locals generally provided good hospitality experiences here too except overhearing loud inappropriate remarks about previous ownership behind reception desk during checkout left negative impression unnecessarily shared publicly towards guests present nearby detracting professionalism otherwise displayed elsewhere throughout I wanted to stay once.
This was my first time using the service. I noticed that many foreigners are employed here. I was impressed that their name tags had their countries of origin written on them, and their Japanese was very good. Everyone was very kind. However, the explanations of the dishes were a bit unclear, and there were times when I couldn't catch what was being said. Some of the dishes seemed a bit lukewarm. I was particularly disappointed that the miso soup at breakfast was not hot. Although there were a variety of items for breakfast, the menu was not satisfying. The Room was clean and spacious enough. The amenities were also good. There are many stairs in the building, making it feel like a maze. I thought it might be difficult for me if I get any older.

Nice hot water.
I stayed there in early September. We were informed to call once we entered the hot spring town as we had to climb the outdoor stairs from the parking lot to the inn, and they would guide us to the parking lot. It might have been because we arrived late and it was getting dark, but we found the parking lot easily, and since we didn't mind carrying our luggage up the stairs, we wondered why we needed to call. Other than that, the hot spring was great, the food was good, and it was a lovely inn. Perhaps because it was an old building or because the air conditioner was a window unit, it was noisy and not very effective, so I thought it might be tough to stay there in the middle of summer. I would like to use it again if I have the opportunity.
