    Golden Week Family Trip (Kumamoto)

I visited Kumamoto for three nights during Golden Week and stayed here for the last two nights. I truly enjoyed the meals, and the open-air bath in the Room also had a wonderful view. However, it was very disappointing that the water pressure in the Room’s open-air bath (shower, etc.) was low and difficult to rinse off with, and that noise from the floor above carried through and made it hard to relax. Still, as its name suggests, this Accommodation is one I would like to visit again when the autumn maple leaves are at their best.

    Perfect for a staycation.

With a free-flowing natural hot spring bath in the Room, in-room dining, and a massage chair, everything can be enjoyed without leaving your Room. This is the best place for a stay-in retreat! We chose the Gourmet Light Meal Plan, and it was just the right amount for us in our 60s. A highly recommended Accommodation.

    A Trip with My Parents

When traveling with my elderly parents (who have trouble walking and poor eyesight), we usually choose a nearby, barrier-free Onsen. Based on past Reviews, Happo-en seemed like a safe choice, so we booked here. It was right in the autumn foliage season, and from our Room we could clearly see beautiful maple leaves and camellias (I think). The Room was spacious, with a separate bedroom and a separate dining area. The in-room bath had a separate washing area, which made it easy to use, and the Tamana hot spring water itself felt smooth on the skin and very pleasant (I ended up soaking five times in total including the public bath). Meals were served in the Room, and the portions were just right. We were also able to relax in the lounge with coffee and tea. We even received an alcohol tasting. Simply amazing. If I had to mention any issues, it would be that the Room was almost too large (lol) and that checkout is at 10:00 (understandable). We’ll definitely be back!

    I was very satisfied.

Stayed on December 30th. The Room was spacious with a completely separate bedroom and living room. The bath was perfect with natural flowing hot spring water at the right temperature, leaving the skin smooth. The meals were made with local ingredients and were all delicious. A checkout time of 11:00 AM allows for a more relaxed stay.

A perfect accommodation for both babies and adults!

We stayed as a family of four, including my husband, daughter, and 7-month-old grandchild. Since only the West Wing accepts children, we thought the room might be old, but it was very clean. The tatami flooring in the Japanese-style room allowed our grandchild to move around safely even though they are not crawling yet. Having both dinner and breakfast served in the room was very convenient for us with a baby. We rarely encountered other guests in the large bath or hallways, but hearing occasional baby cries from other rooms in the West Wing reassured us that it was okay if our grandchild cried too. The meals were delicious, and as mentioned in other reviews, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We were especially touched by having a designated diaper disposal bin provided—it’s often unclear where to dispose of them at other places! The availability of various baby items made us feel truly welcomed. This was our first time visiting Tamana Onsen, and we loved its soothing water quality. We left completely satisfied and look forward to bringing our grandchild here again!

Enjoy precious moments with your elderly mother.

The Room bath was also available at other Ryokans, but the tatami flooring in the Room bath here was non-slip and prevented coldness, making it very senior-friendly. The in-room dining provided at a dining table separate from the living area was also a nice touch. Seniors often find it troublesome to leave the Room once they enter, and unfamiliar places can make them cautious about their footing, but here I could spend all my time comfortably in the Room! Of course, the meals were delicious, and the staff were kind and attentive—very satisfying! If I had to mention something, it would be that I noticed some noise from the air conditioner.

    It was a wonderful stay.

The staff at the accommodation were very kind, making for a pleasant stay. Meals were served in the room on time, and the taste was excellent. I would love to visit again. The onsen in the room was also amazing!

The room bath has excellent water quality and is wonderful. 1F rooms are slightly dark even on sunny days.

Overall, a good accommodation. Passing through the elegant entrance lobby and lounge leads to the room. The 1st-floor room we stayed in was renovated with a spacious dining area and a calm atmosphere (there were steps in places like near the windows, toilet, and bathroom, so caution is needed). The semi-open-air bath (with lockable sliding doors) and the courtyard visible from the room had a small hill with steps. While rich in greenery, it allowed limited sunlight, which might feel dark depending on personal preference. The hot spring quality in the room was excellent. The large public bath with tatami flooring was comfortable without being crowded but fell slightly short due to shower pressure and drainage issues. Meals were served in-room and were satisfying overall. However, possibly due to it being a busy weekend, staff seemed rushed at times. It was unfortunate that drink orders placed through reception were often delayed. While there are benefits to having meals served in-room, it also led to some time inefficiencies; dining at a shared dining hall might have been more convenient. The staff were generally kind and helpful, making this undoubtedly an excellent accommodation overall. That said, considering current high prices, staying in such an upscale room may not have been necessary for us personally. If we visit again next time, we’d like to try staying on the 2nd or 3rd floor with smaller rooms instead.

    Elegant Hotel

We had a companion with mobility issues, but the thoughtful accommodations made our stay comfortable and hassle-free. The in-room dining at the table was perfect, allowing us to enjoy our stay with elderly parents without worry. The food and bath were exceptional. We would love to visit again!

    It was the best accommodation.

We stayed for one night and two days on a weekday. The accommodation was highly ranked, and with many positive reviews, we had high expectations. The exterior gave a quaint impression, but upon entering, the calm lobby and the spacious interior that felt like a maze made us excited. The staff at the front desk and attendants were very polite and provided excellent service. What impressed us most was the size of the room. Our room featured bamboo accents throughout, with separate spaces for sleeping, dining, and living areas. It felt more like an apartment than a ryokan—spacious and comfortable. We checked in after 3 PM and spent time relaxing in our room before dinner by enjoying tea in this extraordinary space that offered great relaxation. Even ordinary activities felt special in such a luxurious setting. Dinner was seasonal kaiseki cuisine tailored to my husband's allergies as we informed them beforehand; they prepared a special menu for him. The creative dishes were highly satisfying, including additional items like spicy lotus root and horse sashimi which were incredibly delicious. It was our first experience having meals served in-room; sharing this private space with just my husband while enjoying delicious food made me feel truly happy. The bath featured a semi-open-air design with a spacious tub filled with onsen water that left both of our skin smooth after bathing—a memorable experience indeed. The bed in the bedroom allowed us to sleep soundly. Breakfast the next morning was also served in-room—a luxurious spread featuring freshly cooked rice from an earthen pot that was simply outstanding. Though we haven't indulged much at accommodations before, it was worth every bit of luxury this time around. This exceptional accommodation gave us unforgettable memories!

    Repeat guaranteed

We stayed for one night with three children, including breakfast and dinner. The accommodation was clean, and above all, the warm and pleasant service from the staff impressed even the children. And the meals were absolutely delicious! The coffee here is exceptional. We are now considering making this an annual visit. It was a very satisfying accommodation. Thank you very much!

My first visit to Tamana Onsen, Happoen was an excellent accommodation.

Our family lived in Kumamoto for about four years due to a job transfer around 40 years ago. We often visited Aso and Kurokawa, but this was our first time staying at Tamana Onsen Happoen, and we were extremely satisfied. The service provided by the staff in the Room was impeccable. The food was delicious as well. The quality of the Onsen water was light and refreshing, leaving us feeling pleasantly warm. We apologize for mistakenly checking out 15 minutes late; however, we were grateful that all the staff saw us off with bright smiles. Dinner featured the chef's specialty tomato stew, which our family of three thoroughly enjoyed. We also appreciated the coffee service in the lounge and savored every sip of their delicious coffee.

A Property close to Fukuoka, guaranteed to make you want to return.

This is my second visit, and the Room is spacious with a private open-air bath of an impressive size. This Ryokan has been renovated, blending Japanese and Scandinavian styles to create a calm and refined Room, showing great attention to detail. For dinner, it happened to be during the Setsubun season, so they had prepared for bean-throwing and Ehomaki, and my friends and I talked about how lucky we were to stay at such a good time. The access from Fukuoka is convenient, and for those who want to relax without going to popular tourist spots, this Property will surely touch your heart. I will definitely visit again.

The Ultimate Property of Tamana Onsen

This time, we stayed to celebrate my wife's birthday. We stayed in the largest Room at the Property, which included a semi-open-air Onsen, allowing us to enjoy it multiple times. Both dinner and breakfast were served in the Room, allowing us to enjoy delicious meals in a quiet setting, which was wonderful. At the end of dinner, they brought out a surprise birthday cake that I had pre-ordered for an additional fee, along with a photo-taking service and a photo gift. My wife was delighted, and we are truly grateful. The Room, bath, cuisine, and hospitality were all impeccable, making this a top-tier Ryokan!

    Great value for money

It was my first visit in 12 or 13 years. I didn't have many memories from before, except for the open-air bath. This time, the Room was spacious and comfortable at 100 square meters. The Room bath (semi-open-air bath) had a perfect temperature from the hot spring source, allowing for a generous flow of spring water, and I enjoyed it three times during my one-night stay (plus once at the large public bath). For meals, I chose the delicious small-portion Plan served in the Room, and both the quality and quantity were more than satisfactory. The staff's service was also kind and attentive. Next time, I hope to visit during the autumn foliage season.

    Tatami Onsen

This is my second stay. The onsen is not too hot, and the tatami flooring instead of tiles gives it a warm feel, which I like. The food was intricately crafted for the New Year, and the taste was good. It's nice that all rooms have in-room dining, and there is a dining area in the room. I was able to enjoy a variety of delicious dishes in just the right amount. I would like to use it again if I have the opportunity.

    A must-stay experience

The guide was very pleasant, and the Room had a spacious living area with a dining table next to it for enjoying meals. The bath was a semi-open-air bath, and beyond that was a large bedroom with an engawa. It felt more like living in a house than staying at a Ryokan. It was very spacious and comfortable. The seasonal dishes served were all incredibly delicious. Having meals brought to the Room was the best part. Nowadays, you often have to eat in a buffet style or in a restaurant with strangers in a noisy environment, but here, you could enjoy your meals completely privately and at your own pace.

    With my elderly mother

The staff were kind and attentive, even seeing us off. The hot spring was very pleasant. However, as I was accompanying my elderly mother who has difficulty walking, the wide edge of the bathtub made it a bit challenging for her to get in and out. The meals were delicious, especially the breakfast.
