    A highly recommended Ryokan.

I stayed here with my parents and cousin. It was my first time in Kurokawa Onsen, and it’s a truly wonderful place. Among the many Accommodations, “Yamamizuki” was a Ryokan that left us extremely satisfied. [Setting & Baths] The rain we had been worried about never came, so we were able to relax and take our time. Since it was the perfect season, we were moved to be able to watch fireflies from the bath. I also recommend visiting in June. [Meals] Both the portion size and taste were ideal. Rather than the over-the-top extravagance that can be common at a Ryokan, the dishes felt genuinely “just right,” with thoughtful attention throughout. [Hospitality & Service] There seemed to be many international staff members, but their sincerity really came through, and their service was pleasant. With a comfortable sense of distance—not too close, not too far—the hospitality was also exactly “just right.” My parents and cousin were delighted as well, which I think says it all. I would love to stay again if I have the chance. Thank you very much.

    A long-awaited first visit

I’m sharing my honest disappointment because my expectations were high: the meals were extremely bad, and ingredients that should have been served hot were provided cold. On the first morning at 6:30 a.m., the open-air bath was only half full, leaving parts exposed above the water level, making it unusable for lying down; on the second morning at 6:30 a.m., it was lukewarm and not possible to use. Overall, it felt like this place is geared toward inbound tourists who are less likely to complain rather than discerning Japanese guests, which may be why multiple comments pointing out issues have not led to improvements. That said, the scenery was flawless.

The Onsen was a bit disappointing.

The indoor bath water was extremely hot, and the open-air bath water was too cold.\nEverything else felt perfect, but the baths were disappointing.

    It was the best stay.

Thank you for hosting us for two nights. I have food allergies, and I truly appreciate that you accommodated all of them. The meals, the Room, and the Onsen were all wonderful, making these days truly memorable. It was lovely to chat with the staff who served our meals, and their warm smiles made us feel at home. The Onsen had breathtaking views, and we also enjoyed the Onsen at your sister property. The only small issue was that some of the signposted directions were a bit hard to understand, so we got lost a few times. It would be even better if the signage were clearer for first-time visitors. Since it is a little deep in the mountains, extra care is needed when driving on narrow roads, but being away from the busy hot spring town also made for a calm and relaxing stay. What impressed me most was how kind everyone was and how they always greeted us with a smile. I would love to stay again if I have the chance.

    さつき!

    Always great.

This is a wonderful Onsen. This time we were upgraded to a Room with a private bath. There are four indoor baths, three open-air baths (one more than last time), and an in-Room bath. The water temperature varies by bath, but overall it is slightly hot. With mineral deposits floating in the water and a sulfur scent that feels truly therapeutic, it’s my favorite kind of Onsen. The amenities included POLA products and Kurokawa Onsen original oil. The food was delicious as always, and the in-Room bath was absolutely amazing. We would love to stay again.

    The Onsen is amazing!

Kurokawa Onsen has many Accommodations proud of their Onsen, but I believe Sansuikyo is the best. I have visited many times, and I was completely satisfied again this time.

    The bath is amazing!

The price is reasonable, yet the meals and baths are excellent. There are three baths, each with both indoor and open-air options, and you can also enjoy the baths at our sister inn (Miyama Sanso), providing an unparalleled level of satisfaction.

Warm hospitality amidst quiet and beautiful scenery

I visited after sightseeing in Aso during a trip to Kumamoto. I enjoyed a relaxing time surrounded by beautiful greenery. The Onsen was wonderful, and although I stayed in a room with a private open-air bath, the shared bath was also fantastic, allowing me to enjoy the sound of the river and forest bathing while soaking in the Onsen. The meals were full of natural flavors and absolutely delicious. The staff were friendly without being overly attentive, making it a very comfortable accommodation to stay at. Although it's far away and I can't visit frequently, this is definitely one of the accommodations I would love to return to again.

    Long-Awaited Yamamizuki

Every year, I look forward to enjoying Kurokawa Onsen with my elderly parents. Despite arriving early in heavy rain, the staff welcomed us warmly. Each room had its own unique charm and was very comfortable. The meals were exquisite, with detailed explanations and smooth service leaving a great impression. Staying at this long-awaited Ryokan seemed to make my parents very happy. If I may point out one thing, there was some discomfort as the hem of the yukata still had tape attached after cleaning. Perhaps due to being used by guests from various countries? There were also unexpected crumbs from leftover snacks in certain places. The hospitality of the staff was outstanding. If given another opportunity, I would love to visit again during a different season!

    A bit disappointing.

I was looking forward to staying at this accommodation because of the good reviews and my long-time interest in visiting. The meals were delicious, but I was surprised when the staff, possibly a part-timer, placed a small dish on the table by holding it from the top. Their explanation was also hesitant. The hot spring water felt nice, but the temperature seemed a bit lukewarm. In terms of service, there was no welcome drink provided; only some sweets were left in the room. I had to make tea myself. The building is old and has character, but I noticed an unpleasant musty smell. Perhaps placing incense or aroma diffusers in the hallways would help improve this issue. What bothered me most was the smell from the toilet—it reeked of ammonia all the way into the washroom area and ruined what could have been an enjoyable trip.

    The hospitality was excellent.

We visited for a three-generation family trip. Despite the unfortunate rain, we were guided from the parking lot and had our luggage carried to our room. They also kindly lent us umbrellas, which was very helpful as we had a one-year-old child with us. Upon entering the ryokan, they took care of our shoes at the shoe rack. Since our shoes got wet due to heavy rain during the trip, we asked if we could dry them in the room, and they even dried them for us! At check-in, since we came from afar, they upgraded us to a room with an onsen. It was such a surprise as it was our first time experiencing this kind of service. We were so grateful to stay in such a wonderful room. The room itself was beautiful, and its private bath was impressive too. The onsen offered stunning views of the river with an open and relaxing atmosphere—truly one of the most scenic onsens we've ever experienced! Many onsens do not allow small children; however, this place welcomed them warmly. That alone meant so much to us! One indoor bath had hot water while both outdoor baths and other indoor baths were perfect for even our one-year-old child to enjoy comfortably. The baths at Miyama Sanso were also lovely. The meals were luxurious and delicious—especially their "dago-jiru" soup left an unforgettable impression! We tried dago-jiru elsewhere during this trip but found their pork bone-flavored version here to be by far the best. Staying in such a luxurious room has become a memory we'll cherish forever. My mother always wanted to visit Kurokawa Onsen, and choosing this ryokan turned out perfect for her wish! From hospitality to rooms, onsen experiences, and cuisine—this accommodation is undoubtedly the best among all ryokans we've stayed at before. Although it's far away making frequent visits difficult for us—we hope someday when visiting Kyushu again—we can stay here once more. Thank you so much for everything!

    Thank you for your patronage.

Thank you for the stay; it was a relaxing time. However, I was surprised that there were no amenities like lotion provided. I would have preferred samue or pajamas instead of yukata. Also, encountering a swarm of ants and a snake on the path from the bath to the open-air bath while being undressed was quite alarming.

We prefer to be served by Japanese staff.

Meals were served by Indonesian and Korean staff. While the facilities may be adequate, the service quality raises some questions. It is understandable that hiring young staff in a remote mountain area can be challenging, but employing foreign workers without cars in such a location where transportation heavily relies on vehicles seems worth reconsidering.

    77th Birthday Celebration

Surrounded by nature, this facility offers delicious meals, several baths, and exceptional hospitality, making it truly charming. Flowers are beautifully arranged throughout the premises, and everything is impeccably clean, providing a soothing experience both inside and out. They also prepared a special celebration for my mother's 77th birthday as requested in advance, creating an unforgettable memory for her. Although we arrived just in time for dinner and couldn't explore the surroundings leisurely, we look forward to visiting again. Thank you very much!

    Highly recommended in Kurokawa Onsen!

As a returning guest, I can confidently say that Yamamizuki offers an exceptional environment. The spacious grounds allow for leisurely and safe strolls under the starry sky, which is one of its many charms. Of course, the Onsen is absolutely fantastic! Each facility provides hand-sized towels, so you can visit empty-handed. The staff are friendly yet very professional, with impeccable hospitality skills. Their service is truly pleasant, making this my personal number one Onsen in terms of customer care. The rooms are also spacious and comfortable. I definitely look forward to visiting again!

    I was deeply moved.

It felt like discovering a wonderful little paradise in a remote mountain area. We traveled all the way from Tokyo and encountered the nostalgic, traditional scenery of Japan. The beautifully maintained garden in full bloom, the thoughtfully prepared guest rooms, the excellent onsen, and delicious cuisine allowed us to spend a peaceful time. Thank you for your heartfelt hospitality. Wishing continued success for your accommodation. We look forward to visiting again!

    Hatsukurokawa Onsen

This was my first time at Kurokawa Onsen. As rumored, it was an excellent Ryokan. The semi-open-air bath in the room was amazing; I used it about six times. I would love to visit again!

The location of the open-air bath is excellent.

After exploring the center of Kurokawa Onsen, drive about 5 minutes up a mountain road to reach Yamamizuki. Enjoy the open-air bath right away, with a faint scent of sulfur and glimpses of mineral deposits. A river flows nearby, offering the perfect location. The meals are delicious, and it’s an ideal place to unwind from daily fatigue.

We have chosen the best accommodation in Kurokawa Onsen.

Recommended by a friend, we visited Kurokawa Onsen, a region famous for onsen hopping with the "Onsen Pass." Although the accommodation was located away from the central onsen town, our concerns about "onsen hopping" disappeared instantly upon arrival. The building, though old, was beautifully renovated, and the room was excellent. The onsen at the accommodation left us in awe. The men's indoor bath had a slightly retro feel with great ambiance. The open-air bath was breathtaking—situated along a river with a small waterfall right in front of it. My wife mentioned that she even saw deer from the women's side. For dinner, we reserved the small portion course meal. It was outstanding—each dish carefully prepared and delicious until the very last bite of rice. All staff members were kind and attentive. Onsen, meals, and service—all perfect scores! This has become an accommodation we want to revisit.

Kurokawa Onsen - Smooth and Silky Skin

The Onsen water was absolutely amazing. I have visited various places in Beppu and Yufuin in Kyushu, but I liked Kurokawa Onsen the best. The atmosphere at Yamamizuki was also wonderful. The staff were cheerful and provided excellent service. I would love to visit again!

Great people, great Onsen, great atmosphere, great comfort, highly recommended.

People are nice. The staff are kind. They called us several times out of concern due to the blizzard and cold wave warnings. Mr. Utsunomiya, who served us dinner, was cheerful and kind, and shared local information and recommended shrines unique to the area. Onsen is great. The open-air bath with snow fluttering at minus 2 degrees is fantastic. There are several indoor baths with different temperatures to suit your preference. The sulfur-rich, smooth spring quality leaves your skin feeling supple. Atmosphere is good. The snow, night, and softly lit "Yamamizuki" lanterns made me feel welcomed back. A luxury x traditional-modern property. The room is spacious and comfortable. You can use hometown tax, and it's very cost-effective, highly recommended.

It was perfect for a reward trip.

After finishing my business trip to Kumamoto, I stayed here as a reward for myself. The Room was spacious, the bath was spacious, the food was delicious, and everything was just perfect. The only downside was that the road leading there was narrow. I guess that's what gives it that atmosphere in that location. I'm glad I rented a smaller car. It's also a great place to stay before and after climbing Mount Kuju. I will visit again with my mother!

    The Onsen is excellent.

The open-air bath along the river was unforgettable, and I visited for the first time in 30 years. It has become even more wonderful, and I understood why it is difficult to make a reservation. I would like to visit again.

It is truly a Stays ...

It is truly a Stays nestled in the mountains, offering a quiet and calm atmosphere, but I was perplexed by the narrowness of the road on the way. I was very satisfied with the Onsen, using both the open-air and indoor baths multiple times. The changing room exclusively for guests was convenient with face towels available, but there was only one bath towel per person in the Room, which was inconvenient for multiple baths. The Onsen itself was very satisfying. The staff's hospitality was pleasant, as they always greeted us whenever we passed by. The meals were above average, allowing us to fully enjoy the Onsen trip.

    A quiet inn located ...

A quiet inn located in the mountains away from the hustle and bustle of the hot spring town. The service was refreshing and pleasant. The food was also very delicious. The portion sizes and the staff's attentiveness were just right, allowing us to relax at our own pace.

    It was nice hot water.

I stayed in a Japanese-style room with a semi-open-air bath. The service, meals, and facilities were all impeccable. The men's large public bath has only one indoor and one open-air bath, but the open-air bath was particularly spacious and had a great view, which was wonderful. I also used the bath at the annex, Miyama Sanso, which was also excellent. I was impressed that the bath in the room was constantly filled with hot spring water throughout the day and always maintained at the right temperature. The quality of the spring water was also top-notch. The meals were very delicious, showcasing the chef's excellent taste. The only minor issue was the limited number of power outlets in the room, but with some ingenuity, I was able to charge my phone, so it was fine. Although it's quite far from my home, I definitely want to visit again.
