    It was great!

Overall, it was a very satisfying trip. First of all, everyone at the Accommodation was thoughtful and attentive, and they took great care of us. The Accommodation is built spanning a gorge, and together with the surrounding walking paths it was a very pleasant place. The open-air bath in the Room was excellent, and it also had a washing area, so one of the three of us was always in the bath. However, the large public bath felt fairly ordinary, and the hours were short as it was only open until 9:00 a.m. in the morning. Also, we received free café vouchers, but we were told we couldn’t add milk or lemon either, which left us with a slightly stingy impression. That said, as I mentioned at the beginning, our family of three had a wonderful trip overall—thank you very much.

The water rushes swiftly past Oniiwa, heavy with the scent of grass.

The Accommodation consists of several separate buildings set on either side of a fast-flowing river with large boulders. It is surrounded by deep mountain forest. Although a national highway runs just behind the property and an expressway interchange is nearby—so traffic can be fairly heavy—traffic noise is barely audible. Thanks to the location and thoughtful landscaping, the road itself is not visible. Instead, you can clearly hear the sound of the rushing water, creating an authentic mountain atmosphere. On the grounds upstream along the valley stream, there is a café called Ryoan. It’s highly recommended for its wonderful ambiance, but please note that it takes several minutes on foot along a rough mountain path beside the gorge (more like a hiking trail). Guests are warned that it may be dangerous for young children (elementary school lower grades and under). It’s also difficult to access in traditional geta sandals. The renovated Room is clean, with new tatami mats and fittings. A large floor-to-ceiling window opens toward the terrace, with views of lush green mountains that make the space feel open and spacious. The outdoor bath on the wood deck—clean enough to step onto barefoot—is filled at bathing time (automatic setting; just under 20 minutes) before use. There is also a unit bath on the opposite side of the Room, which should be reassuring even in midwinter. Meals are served at tables in a large dining hall separated by low partitions. Dining times are staggered by table, so it remains quiet. The cuisine is excellent. Local junmai sake is also available in small bottles kept chilled in a bottle cooler. With the double-glazed windows closed, you won’t hear even the sound of water at all. It makes for a very quiet night.

    Somewhat dissatisfied

I fully understand that guests are not “gods,” but it was disappointing to encounter a staff member with a poor attitude. The Onsen and the meals were good, but everything else felt below average. Despite the high room rate, there was little service, and even the tsukudani sold as souvenirs was past its best-before date, so I probably won’t stay here again.

    A Trip with My Daughter

I stayed here with my adult daughter while visiting family. Our Room was Senyotei—an elegant, thoughtfully designed guest room that was impeccably clean and offered the ultimate space to relax. My daughter, who was born and raised in the U.S., couldn’t stop expressing how impressed she was—from before stepping through the entrance to taking in every detail inside. I had been worried whether she could handle a traditional Japanese meal often served at a Ryokan, but it must have been so delicious—she finished everything. The hospitality from the front desk staff and attendants was also wonderful, and we had a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much.

    Onsen Accommodation Surrounded by Nature

A wonderful Accommodation nestled in the mountains, built across a river. It reminded me of Senjin Onsen (Iwa-no-Yu) in Nagano that I visited before, but for the price of the Room we stayed in this time, I felt it was a bit disappointing that the private bath costs extra and that you have to bring towels from your Room. That said, if you choose a more affordable Room, I think you’ll be satisfied overall. We also went with my 86-year-old mother to Cafe Ryoan, about a 7-minute uphill walk from the South Wing exit. The atmosphere was lovely and the cake was truly delicious. On the way back down, the cafe staff kindly worried about us and said, “There’s a car heading to the Hotel right now,” and gave us a ride—something we are genuinely grateful for and deeply moved by. If you stay at Ryosan, you should definitely stop by this cafe as well.

    It's not bad at all...

The meals were quite ordinary, without any particularly memorable impact. The private open-air bath in the room was quite small, and the water seemed to differ in quality compared to the large public bath. The large public bath was very relaxing and enjoyable. The staff were extremely kind and helpful.

    Happy Journey

A trip for my father's 88th birthday with my mother, making it a group of three. Since they are elderly, we planned to stay at Ryosan, which is nearby. My father loves Onsen and seemed very satisfied. The accommodation was spotless and well-maintained, allowing us to enjoy a comfortable stay. The meals were absolutely delicious as well. Ryosan is amazing! The autumn leaves were beautiful, the air was fresh, and we had a relaxing time. Thank you for even giving us a birthday gift! We definitely want to visit again.

Open-air bath with the soothing sound of water against large rocks

The approach to the accommodation from the main road is a bit complex, so it’s recommended to check maps in advance. Upon parking in front of the accommodation, staff greeted us and helped carry our luggage. From the front desk, you’ll reach your room via an enjoyable pathway with some elevation changes and an elevator. The room is calm and has been renovated for convenience. Although a main road runs nearby, it’s very quiet. The private open-air bath in the room allows guests to fill it according to their preference. It takes about 20 minutes to fill completely with automatic hot water supply. The terrace offers a serene view of green mountain slopes and includes a washing area for one person. The bath area is clean and well-maintained, with no roughness even when walking barefoot. The refrigerator contains canned beer for your enjoyment. The large communal bath features a spacious open-air section that is bright and comfortable. Dinner was set as "in-room or dining area," but since we requested chairs and tables in advance, it was served at a table partitioned off within a large hall. Meal times were carefully arranged individually to minimize contact with other guests—a thoughtful touch! The food was exquisite; the fresh sweetfish stood out particularly well, complemented by local sake. However, there was no draft beer available, which was slightly disappointing. At night, it’s peaceful—you can hear the sound of the river flowing nearby. Breakfast was served at the same location as dinner. The staff's attentiveness and kind words ensured a stress-free stay throughout our visit. Despite concerns mentioned about "various insects," there were absolutely none during our stay!

    Sauna Thank You

I used the private sauna, and it was amazing. 60 minutes felt too short, so I plan to book 120 minutes next time.

    Delicious

The room is in good condition. The meals are not extravagant, but each dish is carefully prepared and delicious. The water in the large public bath is pleasantly warm, not too hot. While the large public bath is not flashy, it was clean. This is an accommodation I would like to visit again.

    It was comfortable.

The Room, bath, and all areas within the Ryokan were impeccably clean, allowing for a very comfortable stay. The staff's hospitality was also excellent. As a suggestion for future visits, it would be wonderful if tea bags could be added to the Room's beverages (as I am not fond of coffee). Additionally, having a brochure or map of the Ryokan in the Room would be appreciated.

We had a relaxing stay with our children.

This was our baby's first trip. The staff were very accommodating during the Reservation process, and on the day of our stay, they prepared a cushion and blanket for the baby in our Room for dinner. They also reassured us that it was okay if the baby cried, so we could enjoy our meal without worry—it was a wonderful experience to dine out again after such a long time. Since the Ryokan is quite large, walking to the public bath with a baby was challenging, and there wasn't a baby crib available. We used the Room's private bath for bathing our baby while taking turns visiting the Onsen in the public bath ourselves. As for the Onsen, it was unfortunate that there wasn’t much of an Onsen aroma; however, being able to relax in a hot bath after so long made us very happy. To be honest, we didn’t have high expectations for the food—but what a surprise! The meals were absolutely delicious. The sashimi featured unique ingredients instead of ordinary tuna; fish dishes were carefully deboned and easy to eat; every dish reflected meticulous preparation. It wasn’t overly luxurious or too simple—just wonderfully flavorful! It far exceeded our expectations. Although it's close by and we hadn’t considered visiting before, this nearby trip turned into such an unforgettable memory!

    It was excellent!

The Room, meals, atmosphere, and service were all satisfying! The room with an open-air bath was especially relaxing, and the attendant's hospitality was absolutely wonderful. They even came in singing a birthday song, which completely won me over. This time was just a day trip, but I hope to stay overnight next time!

    Sincere gratitude

I went for an afternoon walk from Ryosan to Oniiwa Park. In the mountains, it gets dark early, and it seemed like it would be dark by the time I returned to Ryosan. When I reached Matsunoko, I called to request a taxi, and a staff member kindly came by car to pick me up at Matsunoko. I am very grateful.

    Staying on New Year's Day

I stayed at Gero Onsen from Tokyo and stayed after visiting Gifu Castle. Although I checked in late around 6 PM, the meal was prepared immediately, and the guidance to the room was smooth. The service was pleasantly casual, giving an at-home feeling. The person in charge of serving was energetic and articulate, leaving a very good impression and allowing us to have a pleasant stay. The room was very nice. Both the open-air bath and the indoor bath in the room were excellent. There were many points where I felt that the designer who renovated the room had a great sense. I was impressed that they worked with careful consideration of maintenance and the user's perspective. The chairs inside the room and on the terrace were comfortable, allowing us to relax while enjoying the view. I forgot to mention at checkout, but I noticed that the cover of the ceiling ventilation fan in the indoor bath was bent, and one of the wire fasteners had come off. It can be fixed quickly. We enjoyed our meal leisurely in a private room. The salt-grilled amago (my wife was impressed as we rarely have the opportunity to eat river fish) and coconut almond tofu were particularly delicious. Overall, the flavors were a bit strong. The only dish that wasn't tasty was the glutinous rice wrapped in yuba with pumpkin inside. Around 10 PM, the number of staff decreases, so the service becomes a bit thin, but when we made requests, they promptly brought alcohol and ice to the room, accommodating sudden requests willingly. One point for improvement is that when going out into the hallway (such as during checkout), you can see inside the utility room and staff room. Seeing scattered sheets and such brings you back to reality, so it would be better if they could make it so guests can't see these areas. (Since we're there to escape reality, haha) However, overall, it was very good. The room renovation is well done, and I believe the common areas will continue to be renovated successfully, so I would like to visit again. I look forward to the next opportunity to visit.

    The meals are wonderful!

This is my second stay. I stayed in a room with an open-air bath both times, and during my first stay, I was bitten by ticks in six places on my abdomen the next morning. However, the dinner was excellent, and I was curious about the dishes from other seasons, so I decided to stay in a different room this time. This time, there were no insect bites, and I enjoyed a delicious meal, experiencing a blissful moment.

    Conveniently accessible Valley Hot Springs

After passing the Toki IC and climbing Route 21, you will soon find the entrance to the hot spring area after passing the roadside station. Entering from the sign immediately on the right after passing under the pedestrian bridge leads to a narrow path where you approach the inn's premises. It seems easier to reach the inn's entrance from the next sign. On the north bank of the Kani River, with its large boulders, stands the two-story main building (front desk), and on the mountainside across the river are the four-story South and East buildings in a V-shape. Since the premises are on a slope, there are entrances on the fourth floor as well. A corridor spanning the river connects the buildings on both banks. The rooms are thoroughly cleaned and so pristine that you can smell the wood of the fittings. The glass and metal parts are polished to a shine. From the full glass windows on the northeast side of the room, you can see the Kani River and hear the sound of the river. It seems that insects can enter if you open the window, but even when closed, the air conditioning works quietly, making it comfortable. The bathroom in the room felt smaller than in the photos. It takes about 20 minutes to fill the tub. There is no reheating function. If you fully open the window facing the garden, it feels like an open-air bath. The large bath is in a separate building next to the main building. Although surrounded by walls and lacking a view, it is spacious and clean. The open-air bath, where you can bathe with the leaves while looking up at the garden trees, is also comfortable. Meals are served in the room at a low table, with each dish brought out at the right timing. The menu was freely arranged to accommodate allergies and other needs. Breakfast is set at table seats partitioned in the large hall. Perhaps due to the timing adjustments, it is not crowded and remains quiet.
