  It was a dream-like stay.

  With only 7 rooms situated on a spacious property, we were able to enjoy a quiet environment. Especially during dinner, we had a dream-like luxurious time enjoying authentic French cuisine while gazing at the serene garden. The meal was wonderfully considerate and not heavy on the stomach. The Onsen was also wonderful.

  We saw many fireflies.

  I was in Fukuoka on business and was looking for an Accommodation in Beppu or Yufuin to enjoy an Onsen on the way home when I found one offering a “firefly viewing tour.” Since it’s something you can only see at this time of year, I made a Reservation thinking, “Why not give it a try?” It’s a calm, intimate place that seems to host only about five groups. The Room was spacious with an adjoining room, and the garden was beautifully maintained. The large open-air bath felt wonderful. I also appreciated the small canned beer they left for us after our bath—this is truly an adults-only kind of retreat. Dinner was delicious enough to stand on its own as a French restaurant, and the warm bread would rank near the top anywhere. Every dish was outstanding. Breakfast was a classic Japanese set meal, and each item was excellent. The firefly viewing tour ran from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. The owner took us to spots where fireflies were flying in abundance, and at the final location we saw an incredible display—like watching a Christmas tree made of fireflies shimmering in the dark. It depends on the year and the weather, so I feel very lucky we were able to see so many. During the day, we rode rental bicycles along the Yabakei cycling road and enjoyed refreshing spring greenery and peaceful satoyama scenery with rice planting underway. Another Accommodation I’d love to return to has been added to my list.

  Thank you very much for staying at “Auberge Kaedenoki.” In addition to the quality of the Yabakei Onsen waters, our open-air bath offers a rustic setting surrounded by nature. For dinner, our chef carefully prepares each dish to suit our guests’ tastes, and for breakfast, the proprietress serves homemade country-style cuisine—both made with heartfelt care. We would be delighted if you enjoyed the contrast between French and Japanese cuisine. Yabakei is well known for its autumn foliage, but it is also beautiful in spring with fresh greenery (green landscapes and flowers such as rhododendrons), in June with fireflies, and in summer with its cool air (around 20°C in the mornings and evenings). You can enjoy the scenery as it changes with the seasons all year round while soaking in the Onsen. If you have another opportunity, we would be pleased to welcome you again in a different season.   The French cuisine was exquisite.

  Everything was satisfying, including the delicious food and the kind service from the staff. It’s a long way from Kansai, so it’s a shame I can’t visit often.
