A cheerful hostess!
We stayed for two nights and had a wonderful time. In addition to the Onsen, we were soothed by two different types of baths. During the day, we enjoyed soba in Tsumagoi Highlands and made the most of our trip from Shiga Highlands to Yamba Dam. The proprietress kindly shared tips on how to enjoy Yubatake and suggested nearby scenic drives, which helped us have a truly fulfilling holiday. We also thoroughly enjoyed the TsuruTaro Art Museum on site. Everything was perfect, and we were completely satisfied.

Very good.
Since it has been renovated, the interior is clean and beautiful, and the Room, Facility, and Onsen were all excellent!

A truly Japanese Ryokan! It had a wonderful atmosphere and was very enjoyable.
My stay was very comfortable and pleasant. The meals were delicious, and I was very satisfied. Breakfast was also great, but I would be even happier if there were an option to freely add items like natto or a small selection of additional menu items. Regarding the morning coffee, I wasn’t sure how to request it, so I felt that a brief note or guidance would make it easier for first-time guests. The property was clean and didn’t feel old at all. At times I could hear some footsteps from the floor above or below, but it wasn’t bothersome, and overall I had a very comfortable stay. I would definitely like to stay again if I have the chance. Thank you very much.

It was better than expected.
The building was wonderful. It has been renovated while preserving the charm of the old architecture, and it felt clean and well maintained. The wooden windows and veranda create a lovely atmosphere. Quiet jazz plays throughout the Accommodation, and the photo books in the lounge are tastefully chosen—I never expected to come across a Geoffrey Bawa book in Kusatsu. For me, the location was perfect. You can easily take a walk to Sainokawara Park early in the morning or at night, and it’s also convenient for restaurants near the bus terminal and public baths. Compared with the Yubatake area, this side is less crowded yet still has great places to eat and good public baths. The staff also seem well trained—slippers and outdoor sandals were always neatly lined up, and everyone was pleasant. However, there was no guidance about morning coffee or the in-room safe unless I asked, and information about towel or yukata exchanges was only provided after I inquired. For future guests: Be careful—the bath area is slippery. There is no lotion or makeup remover in the Room. Morning coffee: when I stayed, it was free on Sunday, but on Monday it cost 400 yen per cup. There is no drinking water in the changing area. Perhaps due to the older construction, soundproofing is very poor. You can hear normal conversations from next door, and noise from above/below carries strongly as well. I’ve stayed at over 100 Accommodations of various levels in Japan and abroad, and this was among the worst—I could barely sleep on my first night. During the day as well: cleaning noise echoed through much of the morning; afternoons were quiet enough for a nap. Even with that lack of soundproofing, it’s an Accommodation I’d like to stay at again—the architecture and Onsen were that wonderful.

This is a very good Hotel.
This was my second stay since March this year. I enjoyed my previous stay so much that I chose to stay here again. The Room is very clean and comfortable. We only had breakfast, but it was very delicious. It’s also great that you can quickly get to Sainokawara Onsen, so you can enjoy the open-air bath in the morning when no one else is there. It was also nice to meet the proprietress at check-out and have a chance to chat about various things. I would like to visit again.

It exceeded my expectations.
We had booked our stay without dinner until the day of arrival, but at check-in we were advised that dinner could be arranged, so we decided to add it at the last minute. It turned out to be an excellent meal and we were very satisfied. Since it was cold and started raining that day, being able to have dinner at the Hotel was especially convenient. It was a wonderful Accommodation, with a modern design after renovation while still retaining over 100 years of history. My wife and I would love to visit again.

Enjoy Kusatsu Onsen at a traditional Ryokan
This was my first time in Kusatsu Onsen, and we had a wonderful stay. It’s a bit of a walk from Yubatake, but since you pass through the Onsen town, it never feels boring, and it was also great that it’s close to Sainokawara Park and the open-air bath. The Room was a traditional Japanese-style tatami Room where we could relax, and above all, the baths—fed by two different natural hot spring sources—had excellent water quality and were truly enjoyable. Breakfast was served in a large hall, but the spacious setting was comfortable, and next time I’d like to take my time with a plan that includes dinner as well.

The food is unbelievably delicious!
My husband, our friends, and I (four of us) stayed here and had a wonderful time. The food was very delicious, and it was served at just the right timing. It would be helpful if bath towels were provided in the large public bath. This is an Accommodation I would like to recommend to friends.

There was a relaxed, spacious feel throughout.
We stayed here during the Golden Week holiday. From the moment we stepped inside, we could feel the charm of a bygone era, yet it was well equipped with modern amenities. Whenever we headed out to places like Yubatake, the staff warmly saw us off, and when we returned they welcomed us back—something that felt truly comforting. This has become an Accommodation we would love to visit again. Thank you very much for a wonderful stay, even though it was short.

Relax and unwind in comfort
We were able to relax and fully enjoy our first visit to Kusatsu Onsen. From the warm welcome to the send-off, all staff members treated us with great care. As this is a long-established Ryokan, we were informed that due to the building’s structure, sounds from upstairs Rooms and the hallway may carry. During our stay, we did hear some rattling noises from the Room above a few times, but they stopped after a while and didn’t bother us much. It’s close to Sainokawara Park and set slightly away from the busier area, so it was quiet—yet still within easy walking distance of Yubatake. That location was excellent. The Japanese sweets served in the lounge only in the morning would have been nice to have at check-in or available in our Room as well. We’d love to visit again with our family. Thank you very much.

Wonderful
I stayed during the last week of March. The weather was great, and I was able to enjoy a wonderful time in Kusatsu. Before my stay, I looked up various information about this Hotel, and it turned out to be even better than I had imagined. The exterior is a traditional Japanese-style building, but inside everything was spotless and very clean down to every detail. All the Hotel staff were kind and courteous, and their warm hospitality really stood out. My Room may have been in a renovated wing, but it was very clean and spacious, and I was able to relax comfortably. The baths were large, and above all the quality of the hot spring water was excellent—just what you’d expect from Kusatsu. The Hotel is within walking distance of both Sainokawara Park and Yubatake, which made it very convenient. Yubatake and Sainokawara during the day—and again at night—made for a truly fulfilling stay. I only had breakfast, but it was served as an individual set meal rather than a buffet, which I preferred by far, and it was delicious. The dining staff also greeted guests cheerfully in the morning, which was wonderful. This review has gotten long, but overall I was extremely satisfied with this Hotel. As soon as I got home, I made another Reservation right away. I’m looking forward to my next visit. One thing I noticed: there were tissues only in the bathroom; it would be nice to have them in the bedroom as well. Also, the amenity area at the front desk was a bit hard to find. It was a short stay, but I made great memories in Kusatsu.

I stayed in a Room with an Onsen. It was a beautiful, relaxing Room. The service and meals were excellent. It’s also close to Yubatake, making it a great location for exploring Kusatsu Onsen.

It would be perfect if there was an elevator.
The entire facility has been renovated and is very clean. Meals in the spacious dining area with high ceilings were delicious, and the location is close to both Sai-no-Kawara Onsen and Yubatake, making it ideal for an Onsen tour. However, it was unfortunate that there was no elevator, which made moving around difficult. The convenient location is highly recommended.

If you want to visit Kusatsu and have no other options, this could be a practical choice.
Recently renovated. Check-in at 2 PM, slightly earlier than usual, is convenient. The room was clean and comfortable if you're just looking for a place to sleep. However, there are no outlets near the bedside table, and the placement of the personal chair isn't ideal for two people to relax and enjoy tea together. The Onsen is decent but lacks a sauna. No elevator was found in the facility. Communication with foreign staff in Japanese can be challenging, while Japanese staff tend to be formal and businesslike. Although I understand that the Hot Spring Tax is settled separately, explanations during payment were rushed and hard to follow. While they do see you off at the entrance upon departure, smiles were rare. For this price point, I might consider staying elsewhere next time... That said, perhaps this level of service is common across famous Onsen destinations?

First visit to Kusatsu Hotel in 16 years
The newly renovated Kusatsu Hotel retains some of its traditional charm, though certain aspects have been lost. The Onsen was very relaxing. The food was good, but it was disappointing that there were no explanations or occasional misunderstandings. The Tsurutaro Kataoka Art Museum was inspiring no matter how many times I visited.

The Room and the bath were excellent.
The Room has been renovated and features a bed in a tatami-style setting. The tatami was very soothing. As for the bathroom in the Room, it seemed to be using natural hot spring water. The water was excellent, leaving the skin soft and smooth. However, the shower temperature adjustment might have been broken, as it felt cold when taking a shower after getting out of the bath. It made my warmed-up body feel chilly again. Breakfast was good, but unfortunately, perhaps due to an oversight by the staff, a side dish arrived late after I had finished one bowl of rice, which was disappointing. Overall though, it was very good!

Enjoy Kusatsu Onsen
I stayed at the accommodation for an onsen trip. The onsen had pleasantly hot water. The layout of the facility was somewhat complex, and it was a bit inconvenient as the dining area and large public bath were far away and accessible only by stairs. The meals were fairly enjoyable. I stayed in a Japanese-style room, but the futon mattress was thin, which was slightly uncomfortable for me.

An extraordinary and special time.
The changing room in the large public bath was spacious and well-designed. The two open-air baths, featuring the Nishinokawara and Bandai hot spring sources, had a charming atmosphere, were clean, and allowed for a relaxing soak. I only had breakfast, but the variety was sufficient, leaving me satisfied in the morning. There were also foot baths, a terrace, and coffee service available. Although more than half of the guests were international visitors and the facility was fully booked, I was able to enjoy a pleasant and extraordinary time.

Regrettably
There was no elevator, so it was difficult to go up and down, and since the Hotel itself is on a hill, I do not recommend it for those who move around a lot or have a lot of luggage during a Multiple Night Stay. There wasn't even a shower in the Room, and the usage time for the large public bath was limited, which was inconvenient. I don't know where it came from, but there was a bee in the Room. The Hotel is clean. The service depends on the person, but it was good.

The bathwater had drained out.
The location was excellent. However, the bathtub was half-drained (I made the reservation because I was told I could enjoy two types of hot water), and it remained that way until I called. Furthermore, the meals were all lukewarm and not warm, which surprised me. The breakfast was the same. When I ordered a non-sweet brand of alcohol, a sweet one was served. It was disappointing as it was used for a company trip.

Anyway, the Onsen felt absolutely amazing!
My elderly mother wanted to visit Kusatsu, so I brought my parents to this Hotel. The hospitality of the staff was wonderful. There were also foreign staff during meals, and their warm hospitality was heartwarming. The large public bath was very pleasant, and since my parents were satisfied, I was also very satisfied. Thank you very much.

One night on New Year's Eve
We stayed for one night on New Year's Eve with my partner. It was a No Meals Included stay, but the service was courteous, and the property was well-cleaned, allowing us to have a very comfortable stay. Being an established property, footsteps can be slightly audible, but the guest room's bathroom, toilet, and washroom have been renovated and are very clean. Having stayed at various Stays, this Ryokan left a very high-level impression. The quality of the hot spring water is also excellent, leaving the skin smooth. My partner seemed satisfied as well. However, one point of concern was the use of many pieces of furniture from a well-known overseas brand. If it is a luxury Ryokan, the charm is in experiencing the extraordinary. Seeing furniture that I own made me feel momentarily brought back to reality. It doesn't need to be luxury furniture, but a selection that doesn't convey a sense of cost would further enhance satisfaction. Nevertheless, it was a very wonderful Stay, and next time, I would like to repeat with meals included. Thank you for the wonderful time.

First time at Kusatsu Onsen
I stayed for one night at the end of November. Since it was my first time visiting Kusatsu Onsen, I was quite indecisive about choosing a property. The main deciding factors were the location and the elegance. The area around Yubatake is noisy and the parking is far, so I decided on Kusatsu Hotel 1913. The history and cleanliness of the building were impeccable, the meals were delicious, and the baths were clean and pleasant, leaving me very satisfied. As for the location I was concerned about, it was in a good spot and very convenient. Thank you very much to the staff who took care of us.

It was a very nice accommodation, but
Our family stayed at a traditional Japanese-style hot spring inn to celebrate our older elementary school daughter's birthday, as she wanted. At check-in, we were shown the dinner menu and asked if there were any allergies or dislikes (we had no particular allergies). The menu seemed extensive, so to enjoy the dinner, we refrained from letting our daughter eat the grilled sweetfish she wanted during our stroll around the hot spring town, and headed to the dinner venue with an appetite. However, we expected our daughter to be served a Japanese-style meal similar to the adult menu, including fish and roast beef, but she was given a kids' plate with items like omelet rice and fried chicken, which are more suited for young children. This was not mentioned or confirmed in the menu we were shown at check-in. Our daughter is not fond of kids' menus, but realizing we hadn't confirmed this, we requested additional plain rice and miso soup. Without any particular confirmation, we were served corn rice and a special egg drop soup instead of miso soup (adults received regular miso soup). In the end, I shared my adult meal with my daughter, regretting not letting her eat the grilled sweetfish during our stroll. The adult menu was also unclear whether it was Japanese or Western cuisine. We had informed them at the time of booking that it was our daughter's birthday, but this was not acknowledged at all. The room and overall atmosphere were impeccably clean, not showing any signs of age, and truly wonderful. The large public bath was new, and the hot water was excellent, making us want to return from the moment we arrived, which made the dinner a bit disappointing. We decided not to mention the meal to make it a fun memory for our daughter and enjoyed the hot spring, room, and foot bath.
