The food was delicious, and we were able to relax at a leisurely pace!
It was my birthday, and my partner chose this Accommodation for us. We visit Nishi-Izu often, and this was one of the places I’d had my eye on. The summer cicadas and the view from the hilltop were wonderful—slightly hazy, but incredibly relaxing. As soon as we arrived, we enjoyed a beer on the terrace. Even though it was hot outside, the sea breeze unique to Nishi-Izu felt pleasantly cool. (I did notice significant wear on the surface of the hinoki bath, so I think it would be best to address this as soon as possible.) From check-in through restaurant service, we didn’t see any Japanese staff members, which made us a little uneasy at first. Some explanations were hard to understand, and we had to fill in the gaps ourselves. This may be a matter of personal preference. That said, we didn’t feel inconvenienced during our stay, and everyone worked proactively—it made us want to support them. Their smiles were lovely! (I think clearly designating Japanese staff for support would help prevent issues and provide reassurance.) As mentioned in other Reviews, the food is simply excellent—delicious! My partner was very satisfied as well. There’s no flashy presentation, but each dish is carefully crafted, and great food really makes you glad you came! What surprised me most was how good the rice was!! Apparently they use “Sakihokore” rice from Akita. We’ve traveled quite a bit, and it’s definitely in my top three. They also prepared a birthday plate for us—thank you very much! It was a wonderful meal. That day there were fireworks in Toi nearby, so we went to see them. The birthday fireworks became a truly special memory! At night, the starry sky from our Room was beautiful, and with comfortably warm water I spent a relaxing evening for the first time in ages. Thank you so much for accommodating an unexpected request as well. We’ll be back!

Highly satisfied
The weather on the day of our stay was cloudy, so we couldn’t see Mt. Fuji—but even so, this Accommodation exceeded our expectations. The meals were made with local ingredients and were absolutely delicious. The next morning, we could see Mt. Fuji from our Room and the open-air bath, which made us even happier. It would be even more moving in a season when you can see snow-capped Mt. Fuji. This was a wonderfully satisfying, adults-only style Accommodation that made us want to come back just for the stay itself.

The meals and views are excellent, but we hope to see improvements in the service.
The Room was spacious and comfortable, and every dish at both dinner and breakfast was exceptionally delicious—this was the most satisfying part of our stay. Everyone in our group also said the meals were outstanding. The view of Mt. Fuji straight ahead was hidden by clouds when we arrived, but the next morning it appeared clearly against a cloudless blue sky, which was truly moving. It was also wonderful to be able to see Mt. Fuji from the in-room bath. On the other hand, there were some concerns regarding service. From the Check Reservation phone call onward, I felt slightly uneasy about communication in Japanese, and after arrival most of the staff at the front desk and in dining were non-Japanese. There were moments when explanations were difficult to understand, and for a high-end Onsen Ryokan where guests come to relax, I would prefer to receive service confidently in proper Japanese. We stayed as a group of four, but we were surprised to find two futon sets already laid out in the tatami room upon entering. While I understand it may be extra work, it would be more comfortable to keep space available for relaxing on tatami and have futons prepared during dinner or similar times. In addition, along the area from the sink/changing space to the toilet, a seam in the cushioned flooring had peeled up; walking barefoot felt prickly and bothersome. Considering this Room grade, that part was quite disappointing. The artificial flowers placed directly in front of the dining area also felt uncoordinated and did not match the Ryokan atmosphere. The “three terraces” have a lovely ambiance as well, but in midsummer it is hot not only during daytime but also at night, so we hardly saw any guests using them. The IKYU.com Diamond member benefit initially applied to only one Room; however, once we pointed it out they adjusted it for two Rooms as appropriate. Also, while there seemed to be plenty of staff during dinner service, only one person appeared to be present at checkout time—I felt staffing allocation was somewhat unbalanced. We visited with high expectations due to its Michelin Key award: while dining exceeded expectations by far, I hoped for another level of attentiveness in services beyond meals. This time we were satisfied because we could stay at a reasonable rate using discounts and points; however at full price value for money would feel somewhat questionable.

Spectacular Views of Mount Fuji
I found this property on IKYU and decided to make a Reservation. When I arrived, I was disappointed because Mt. Fuji wasn’t visible. However, the staff member who showed me to my Room told me that Mt. Fuji would be beautifully visible the next morning. I wasn’t completely convinced, but the view in front of me the next day truly moved me. Many of the staff were from overseas, yet their service was smooth and stress-free. The meals were delicious, and honestly, I wondered if this price was really okay—I felt like I got an amazing deal. If I have another chance, I would definitely like to visit again.

I’d love to visit again just to stay at this Accommodation.
We stayed at Fugaku Gunjo as a couple during a summer holiday we were able to take at short notice. Away from the bustle of everyday life, we were able to spend unhurried time together in a quiet setting. Even though it was a short stay, it felt deeply fulfilling. Although we were blessed with clear weather on the day of our stay, the typical summer haze meant we couldn’t see Mt. Fuji clearly during the daytime. Then, around 6:00 the next morning, I happened to glance outside and there it was—Mt. Fuji standing out in crisp detail. Its powerful, beautiful summer presence—so different from its snow-capped 모습—left a lasting impression. Listening to cicadas, simply taking in the view and enjoying time doing nothing. Even moments when we would normally keep ourselves busy felt like a luxury here. It was an experience unique to Fugaku Gunjo, where only the sounds of nature blend into the stillness. The dining was also exceptional. The French kaiseki dinner showcased each ingredient with great care, and every course was a pleasure. Japanese and French elements came together naturally, creating refined dishes that remained enjoyable through to the end. Breakfast was equally memorable. The rice cooked in a traditional pot was truly delicious—we realized we had finished every last bite between us without even noticing. We also learned that some of their rice and vegetables are grown on their own farm, and we were impressed by how seriously this Accommodation values its ingredients from the very source. Not just presentation but attention to these details is what elevates the entire stay. What especially stayed with us this time was the hospitality of all staff members. From Shuttle Service to check-in and dining, everyone we met was friendly and welcoming with genuine smiles—and their sense of distance felt perfectly comfortable as well. Their warm hospitality never felt formal or scripted; it put us at ease again and again throughout our stay. Though it was only one night and two days, everything from arrival to departure felt consistently pleasant. Beyond the spectacular views, beautiful rooms, and wonderful food—from growing ingredients on their own farm to thoughtful attentiveness by staff—you can feel careful dedication throughout this Accommodation. Looking back on this trip, it feels less like “an Accommodation you stay at for sightseeing somewhere else,” and more like “a place you travel for in order to spend time here.” Next time, we’d love to visit in another season—and enjoy a trip where staying at Fugaku Gunjo itself is our main purpose once again as a couple.

Unlike the tradition...
Unlike the traditional image of a Ryokan, both the cuisine and the building felt modern, and it really made me realize this is the direction things are heading. I was very satisfied.

With this, it’s hard to see guests returning.
We stayed here for my wife’s birthday. I mentioned it when making the Reservation, but there was no acknowledgment at all on the day. We weren’t expecting a cake or anything (neither of us likes sweets), but I felt at least a brief comment would have been appropriate. Also, we couldn’t see Mt. Fuji—the Hotel’s biggest selling point—which can’t be helped due to the season and weather, but there was no comment from the staff about that either. If they had shared even casual information—such as which season is best, or that it was visible on some days a week earlier—it would have helped us think about when to visit next… Perhaps because most of the staff are foreign nationals (they did try hard), information wasn’t shared well or there were language limitations. I also didn’t notice anyone like a manager in charge (they may have been there, but I couldn’t tell). It felt like service was left entirely to individual staff members rather than being hospitality provided by the Hotel as a whole. My wife also said she was disappointed to see artificial flowers displayed inside the Hotel; she expects top-tier Hotels to use only fresh flowers. P.S. At dinner we ordered wine, and it was served to me first. It is standard etiquette to serve women first, so I think staff training should cover this. Also, white wine should be served with an ice bucket/chiller available.

Enjoy the ultimate bath with a view of Mt. Fuji.
The food was delicious, and the view was great. However, there was a family with small children, and the vibrations and noise from them running around the Room and terrace spoiled the otherwise relaxing adult atmosphere. I felt that soundproofing/vibration control measures or usage restrictions for children of elementary school age or younger may be necessary.

We had a relaxing stay.
Because two typhoons were approaching, I wasn’t sure whether to go until the morning of the day, but I’m glad I was able to make it. All the staff were kind, and it became a memorable trip. I would definitely like to stay again. The reason for my 4-star rating was the weather, so I hope we have better weather next time. Thank you very much.

The food and the view were both excellent.
I visited with a friend who had returned to Japan after a long time. Dinner was absolutely delicious, and in the morning we enjoyed the open-air bath while looking straight at Mt. Fuji—making it a truly satisfying trip. The staff and spa therapists were very kind, and my friend was delighted. Thank you very much.

The food is outstanding!
This was our first visit. The cuisine was truly outstanding, and we were deeply moved from the bottom of our hearts. Creative cuisine can sometimes become self-indulgent in its pursuit of originality, but here each dish was clearly crafted with care—original yet respectful of the ingredients. The mushroom soup with foie gras was so delicious it brought tears to my eyes. While the focus is French, we could also enjoy sashimi, and we were grateful for the freshly cooked rice and homemade pickles at the end—it reminded us how wonderful it is to be Japanese. Everything from appetizers to dessert was delicious, and my wife and I were amazed throughout. Of course, breakfast was just as expected: everything handmade and very tasty. We were especially impressed by a single piece of rolled omelet (dashimaki tamago). It reminded us again that cooking is about quality, not quantity, and we felt that such consistently handmade delicious food reflects the chef’s great dedication. The Room furnishings were also wonderful, and Mt. Fuji seen through the large window looked like a framed painting. The local coffee milk you placed in the refrigerator was perfect after enjoying the open-air bath! Perhaps this is nostalgia from someone born in the Showa era, but it was a thoughtful touch that made us very happy. The open-air bath wasn’t working well the next morning so we felt a bit cold, but it didn’t bother us at all—it was such a fulfilling stay overall. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

It was almost a perfect score, but…
Just as everyone says, the open-air bath offers a spectacular view, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious with just the right amount. When we entered the restaurant, the staff lined up to welcome us, and I wondered if it was a Michelin-starred restaurant. At bedtime, it seemed the Room next door was occupied by Western guests, and we could hear steady snoring—maybe they heard ours too (lol). There was just one spot where I thought, “Please don’t ever forget to clean here,” so I deducted a little point, but it was a wonderful Accommodation you won’t regret visiting.

A Relaxing and Comfortable Stay
This was our second visit. We first stayed here last Christmas and had such a wonderful experience that we returned to celebrate both my husband’s and my birthday. This time, we also brought our elderly parents and booked two Rooms. Just like last time, we were able to see beautiful Mt. Fuji on the second day. Our parents were truly delighted as well. The open-air bath while gazing at Mt. Fuji across Suruga Bay seemed absolutely exceptional. Although it was our second time, we were once again moved by the views from the Room and the open-air bath. Regarding the meals, thank you for accommodating our dietary dislikes as requested in advance. Every dish was beautifully presented and delicious, and we were completely satisfied again this time. Another great point is that Fugaku Gunjo offers a 12:00 checkout, which allows for a relaxing stay. Thanks to that, we could enjoy the Onsen even after breakfast. I truly recommend this Accommodation to anyone who wants an unhurried getaway. Since our elderly parents are no longer able to do sightseeing that involves long walks, they especially appreciated being able to spend extended time here. If there was one minor issue during our stay, it would be that the hot water function on the water dispenser in our Room (Umi no Oka) did not work. We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food and beautiful scenery from the Room, making this another set of wonderful memories. Thank you very much to all of your staff. We would love to return again if given the opportunity.

Adult Getaway: Izu Edition
This was a two-family trip with my wife’s older sister and her husband in 2026. The delicious French kaiseki-style cuisine and the view of Mt. Fuji from the Room alone make this Accommodation more than satisfying. The weekly forecast suggested we might not be able to see Mt. Fuji, but we were able to enjoy the view throughout our stay. However, one concern—also mentioned in other Reviews—is that while all of the international staff work very hard, there were times when our questions or requests did not come across clearly. If possible, it would be reassuring to have at least one Japanese staff member on site at all times. Also, I would prefer a better selection of drinks in the refrigerator. The outdoor living area in front of the Room is lovely, but it felt underutilized. I personally hoped it could be a space where guests could enjoy alcohol after dinner.

It may depend on the weather.
What I liked most was the Room and the view. This time we stayed in Umi no Oka. The view of Mt. Fuji from the Room is simply amazing. The layout flows well, and the space is more than sufficient. It was very comfortable and relaxing. Each Room has different interior design, so I’m curious about the other Rooms as well. In terms of the view, I feel the Rooms on the left side when facing from reception may have a better angle. The meals served in a private dining room were not mind-blowing, but they were quite good overall. The tableware is beautiful and really lifts your mood. I also thought it was nice that you can take the chopsticks home. On the other hand, what concerned me was hospitality. To mention small details: when I called to confirm our pickup, the senior staff member who answered sounded somewhat curt, and they hung up abruptly before I did. I don’t know if it was a busy time, but it made me pause for a moment. During our stay as well, there were times when we called reception and no one answered—something that’s quite rare at other Accommodations. Many of the staff are foreigners. That itself is not an issue at all, and you can tell they are working very hard—I genuinely want to support them—but there were many moments where it felt like they are still in training. Given this price range, I think it would be better to provide more thorough training before assigning them full responsibilities; there were simply too many questions they couldn’t answer or things they didn’t know (and to be clear, this is not meant as criticism of them). We were lucky with great weather this time, but if it had been bad… those concerns might have stood out more strongly for me. It’s such a wonderful Accommodation that it feels like a missed opportunity.

Incorrect menu item
I have stayed at many luxury Ryokan, but as someone who paid a high price to stay here, I was left with doubts about this Accommodation. First, at check-in I was given an explanation by a foreign staff member, but their Japanese was not fluent and I could not understand it well. Also, when I was shown to my Room, the explanation felt rushed and did not reflect genuine hospitality. To make matters worse, during dinner they seemed to have made a mistake with the menu list and changed it partway through. Honestly, it would have been better to finish without changing it—the change only made me feel worse, especially since I had already been served and eaten the wrong dish. The food itself was delicious, which made it even more disappointing. I think staff training needs improvement.

Because there are so...
Because there are some areas that are difficult to walk on, we had asked for consideration regarding where to park the car. However, the staff member who guided us said, “Please park wherever you like,” without confirming our name. Since there were only a few parking spaces, it didn’t make much difference, though. During dinner service, one staff member noticed I am left-handed and was very attentive about the placement of the knife and fork; at breakfast the next day, chopsticks were set out for a left-handed person as well, which impressed me—but then the rice and miso soup were placed as if for a right-handed person. The in-room 안내文 stated that smoking was allowed on the balcony, but in reality smoking was only permitted at the designated smoking area next to the entrance. It feels like things were just slightly short of perfect. Since this is a Michelin-star Accommodation, I’m being a bit strict.

The water is too cold to take a bath. Is there no one available at night?
The water temperature in the open-air bath in my Room was low from the moment I entered after check-in, so I asked for it to be raised once. After that, the temperature stayed comfortable for a while, but around 10:00 p.m., the flow from the Onsen hot-water faucet almost stopped. The bath water kept getting colder and it was not a situation where I could bathe at all. The Room guide says that after 10:00 p.m. the front desk cannot assist and guests should call an external mobile number, but since there would be no staff on site, I assumed they could not handle this situation and did not call the emergency number. Just after 8:00 a.m., I called the front desk but no one answered, so I called the emergency number. I explained that no hot water was coming out and that it had become like a cold-water bath. About 30 minutes later, hot water finally started flowing again, but it took a long time for all of the bath water to warm up. One hour later, it stopped again. When I contacted the front desk again, a foreign staff member responded unbelievably by saying “It will come out soon.” A few minutes later, this time someone from the front desk called my Room and a Japanese staff member explained that an error message was showing on the temperature control system. In the end, even though there was plenty of time until checkout, I could hardly use the bath at all and left feeling extremely upset. Issues: (1) Why did no manager or person in charge come in person to explain how they would handle repeated malfunctions or to apologize? (2) Under our agreement, we had the right to enjoy our stay including use of the open-air bath in our Room; we paid a substantial amount for this—doesn’t being unable to bathe constitute breach of contract? (3) If nighttime support is only via an emergency phone line, then if something unexpected happens—such as a fire—are guests supposed to escape on their own? This Hotel’s governance is extremely poor. (4) Having used many Hotels in Japan as well as Europe and North America, in situations like this both domestically and abroad either management or even ownership promptly apologized directly and arranged an immediate move to an equivalent or better Room; this Hotel showed none of that consideration. It did not feel like a guest-first Hotel at all. Finally, when leaving they handed me some sweets “as an apology,” which also felt unpleasant rather than sincere. There was a Michelin 2025 plaque displayed at the front desk counter; it looked ridiculous to me. In my experience French people only see what is convenient for them—I laughed at it repeatedly while looking at that plaque.”

It was a very disappointing stay.
On the day of my stay, I was able to enjoy a special, out-of-the-ordinary experience, including the Onsen, meals, and service, and went to bed satisfied. The next morning, I tried to enjoy the Onsen again and took a morning bath, but the water was cold like tap water, so I had to get out in a hurry. I called the front desk to ask about it and let it ring about 10 times, but there was no answer and no return call. When it was time for breakfast, I went into the breakfast venue and asked the butler. I was told that a system error had occurred but had been restored and that I could use it after my meal. After eating, I checked the Onsen temperature again, but it was still low and not suitable for bathing at all. Although I was told that as a Diamond member my stay could be extended until 12:00 p.m., I checked out at 10:00 a.m. I was also disappointed that there was not even a brief explanation about the open-air bath system error at checkout.

Thank you very much.
This was our first trip to Nishi-Izu, and we carefully chose this Accommodation through the website. The view of Mt. Fuji across the sea from our Room was breathtaking. The open-air Onsen bath on the terrace was exceptional as well, and we were able to truly relax in the morning under a blue sky with birdsong. Breakfast and dinner served in a private dining room were delicious, and we enjoyed them at a calm, unhurried pace. It was a birthday trip, and we were deeply moved by the surprise “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” message on the plate. The Room had motorized blinds—and even an electric toothbrush. With a ReFa hair dryer, a larger brush, special shampoo and conditioner plus skincare items, a spacious indoor bath with bath salts provided, and more, both the Facility offerings and amenities far exceeded our expectations. Since you can make Reservations for each of the eight uniquely designed Rooms, we would love to stay in a different Room next time. Thanks to you, it became a truly wonderful commemorative trip. Thank you very much.

The view of Mt. Fuji from Fugaku Gunjo in Toi on the east coast of Izu is breathtaking!
The hospitality from the staff at Fugaku Gunjo was very pleasant, and the meals were truly delicious. The tableware was also beautiful and enhanced the dishes. The Room has both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and they are spacious enough to soak in comfortably. The view from the open-air bath is outstanding—Suruga Bay, the townscape of Fuji City across the water, and Mt. Fuji! Even the amenities surprised me—the toothbrush is electric... It was an amazing stay! If I had to point out something to improve, I noticed the lobby sofa that you see first at check-in. As for loungewear, I personally prefer jinbei... Enjoy exclusive views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay from the open-air bath.
This was my first visit in six years. I was thoroughly satisfied with the same wonderful views and delicious meals as ever. My Room was the westernmost one, “Niji no Hashi,” because I prefer an open-air bath with a square stone tub. We were lucky with the weather and could see Mt. Fuji straight ahead. The weather is always a matter of luck, but this Accommodation feels even more uplifting when Mt. Fuji is visible. In a quiet setting where you can hear little more than birdsong and the wind, you can enjoy the luxury of taking in breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay from the open-air bath. The Room also had a water dispenser that provides both cold and hot water, making it easy to stay well hydrated. Meals were served in a private dining room. The menu felt like a fusion of Japanese and French cuisine, featuring mainly local seafood and mountain produce from around Izu. The food was every bit as impressive as the view. What has changed since six years ago: - Instead of a basic disposable toothbrush, I was surprised to find an electric toothbrush in the amenities box. - It felt like there are more international staff members now, but their service is polite and excellent. - The chopsticks at dinner had the date and “Fugaku Gunjo” branded on them; after the meal, you can place them in the provided chopstick case and take them home as a keepsake. A wipe for cleaning them after use is also provided. - There used to be an electric kettle in the Room, but it has been upgraded to a water dispenser. - The loungewear and pillowcases used to have “Fugaku Gunjo” printed on them, but that logo is no longer there. My last visit was before COVID, so this time was my first in six years—and it was still outstanding. I will definitely return.
