  An Unforgettable 60th Birthday Celebration This Summer, Together with Yui

  We were thoroughly satisfied with the many delicious, beautifully presented dishes that captured the transition from summer to autumn. We enjoyed them in a private dining Room with a waterfall right in front of us. We stayed in a detached suite called Suirei, where a small stream runs through the Room. From the spacious open-air bath, there is another smaller open-air bath just down a few steps; each has a different temperature, so you can soak for as long as you like. The garden was also expansive, and we were able to fully enjoy summer and feel refreshed. Thank you very much for celebrating our 60th birthday with us. I hope to visit again even when I’m a grandmother.

This time, you stayed in the Room “Suirei.” Designed to evoke the Meiji and Taisho eras, it offers a nostalgic yet quietly refined atmosphere. We hope that, surrounded by the murmuring stream flowing through the Room, the waterfall just before you, and Okuyugawara’s lush greenery, you were able to set everyday life a little farther away. We are also delighted to hear your kind words about our early seasonal cuisine—“delicious and beautiful to look at”—and our head chef was especially pleased.   It was the perfect way to refresh!!

  I don’t usually post Reviews, but this was such a wonderful Accommodation that I wanted to share it in case it helps anyone considering a stay. I live in central Tokyo, and staying at luxury Hotels in Tokyo is one of my hobbies. A Hotel stay refreshes me and boosts my motivation for work. When I’m craving an Onsen, I choose highly rated Ryokan based on Reviews. YUI has become one of my favorite Accommodations—easily among the top Ryokan I’ve stayed at so far. First, the Room was spotless. I’m a bit particular about cleanliness, but there wasn’t a single thing that bothered me—I was completely comfortable. The meals were delicious, and all the staff were kind and welcoming with genuinely pleasant service. Check-in and check-out are completed in your Room, so you hardly run into other guests. If you want to relax quietly at your own pace, I highly recommend it. I had seen some strict Reviews about the food and was slightly worried, but everything tasted great to me. I was also happy that the drink prices were reasonable (laugh). A river runs right in front of you, and you can fully enjoy nature that you simply can’t experience in the city. The open-air bath in the guest room was especially soothing—I could soak slowly without worrying about anyone’s eyes. Many people dislike insects; what surprised me most was how few came inside. In Rooms with an open-air bath, that’s always something I worry about because I’m not good with bugs—but this time there wasn’t even one insect in the tub or bathroom when I woke up in the morning, which made it extremely comfortable. (You can see insects outside, but somehow they don’t come in.) Also, when it comes to summer Onsen bathing, I usually don’t like stepping outside into heavy humidity before getting in. At YUI, even when going outdoors I barely felt that muggy heat at all, so I could enjoy the Onsen very comfortably even in summer. (I’m not sure if it’s because of Yugawara, the building design, or being surrounded by nature.) This might get me scolded for nitpicking—but if I had to mention any downsides: The towels are clean and fluffy, but their absorbency is slightly weak. Also, if you’re arriving by supercar/low-clearance vehicle (?), you’ll need to choose your Room carefully—advance consultation is essential. To everyone at YUI: thank you very much for taking such great care of us during our stay. Sorry I couldn’t include photos—I’m not good at taking them. We will definitely visit again. I'm already looking forward to deciding which Room to stay in next time.

  Thank you very much for staying at Okuyugawara Yui -YUI-. As someone who frequently stays at luxury hotels, we were truly delighted to read your wonderful Review of Yui. Our housekeeping team, who rarely have the chance to meet guests in person, prepares each room with great care every day while imagining our guests’ happy smiles. We have already shared your Review with them, and they asked us to pass along their message: “We feel truly rewarded—thank you so much!” The clear stream of the Fujiki River flowing in front of Yui and the fragrant breeze passing through the mountains continually refresh the valley air like a natural air purifier. The cold spring water also seems to cool the mountain air even further, lowering the perceived temperature. We are grateful for this gift of nature that can only be enjoyed in Yui’s unique location. Regarding insects, we have long been taking preventive measures, and our specialist team works hard so that everyone can stay comfortably. As we are surrounded by abundant nature, it is difficult to say that none will ever enter; however, if there seem to be more small visitors on a given day, our staff will come to your room and kindly escort them back outside. Regarding towels, we have actually received various comments as well. We are already preparing improvements. As we mentioned at check-out—“Please make a Reservation for one of our detached villas next time”—we would be grateful if you could try the newly adopted towels then and share your feedback again. Regarding parking: as you noted, many guests arrive in rare vehicles. With this recent renewal, we have created a highly secure parking area exclusively for main building guests, featuring a light-blocking roof and surveillance cameras. There is ample space even for low-clearance cars or vehicles with large doors; if you have any concerns, please consult us in advance and we will be happy to assist. We sincerely appreciate the many helpful comments from various perspectives that will also serve as a reference for other guests considering their stay. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts. This evening as well, Okuyugawara is cooled by a refreshing breeze, allowing our guests to enjoy a comfortable time here. When you feel tired from city heat or crowds, please do come visit us again.   Yugawara’s Finest Onsen

  No matter how many times I visit, I always want to come back, but my wallet won’t allow it—so this time I stayed without meals. As expected, it’s the best in Yugawara.\nIn November during the autumn foliage season, I’d like to try staying in the Room I stayed in this time again.

  The long-awaited main building has reopened after renovation.

  I stayed in Fuka on the 3rd floor. Since it’s the only Room on that floor, it feels very peaceful. It’s incredibly spacious—even all the way out to the open-air bath. I also really enjoyed the sauna, and I loved soaking in the bath while listening to the sound of the large river. For older guests like me, it would be nice to have a chair in the shower room. The ReFa hair dryer was a small, portable latest model, but it’s hard to dry hair with. It’s fine for carrying around yourself, but as an amenity, wouldn’t a larger one be easier to use? The meals were extremely satisfying! Delicious and thoughtfully prepared, with no shortcuts even at breakfast. After eating that food, I felt that price was understandable. All of the staff were wonderfully attentive and considerate—I truly had a very comfortable stay.

  This is an excellent accommodation.

  This was our second stay. I visited with my husband the first time, and the Accommodation was so wonderful that I came back for a second visit with my son. Even though the dates were close together, we were surprised and impressed that, thanks to the head chef’s thoughtful consideration, we were served a different menu. Everything was delicious again, and we are truly grateful. Thank you very much. My son loved not only the food but was also amazed by the selection of alcoholic beverages available—he couldn’t decide because there were too many he wanted to try. He also said he had a great time chatting with your staff about the GR86. Thank you for taking such good care of us. We will definitely visit again next time as a family of three.

  I had a wonderful birthday.

  We visited on the Anniversary Plan. We were truly impressed by the wonderful service. The Room was spacious with a great layout, and the bed was large. The open-air bath was also large. The washroom was spacious as well. We were able to relax and unwind completely. I smoke, and being able to enjoy a footbath on the outdoor terrace while smoking... it was perfect. Of course, the meals were delicious too. My husband said the optional horse sashimi we ordered was even better than what you get in Kumamoto, where it’s famous. We also ordered abalone for two, and at dinner the proprietress kindly prepared it both grilled in its shell and sautéed in butter, which made us very happy. The late-night inari sushi was delicious as well. This is a Ryokan we definitely want to visit again. We already made a Reservation right away. We’ll be visiting again soon with our son.

  I was satisfied.

  We visited to enjoy the Onsen after celebrating a birthday in late February. The Onsen was pure bliss for both body and mind. The meals made us feel that the same head chef is still refining their craft, and we enjoyed every dish with gratitude. The portions were a little too large for us as seniors, and we regretted not being able to finish everything. On our way home, my spouse and I talked about coming back again soon.

  Impulse buy based on the cover

  It was our first time staying here. As an older couple, we found the maisonette with stairs a bit challenging. We also would have liked a TV in the bedroom. The food was very delicious, and we especially had a wonderful encounter with some sake. It was sake from Setoichi Shuzo, with a truly beautiful label—an item we chose at first sight. The Uguisu-naki tokkuri (sake flask) that was served was stylish and added to the enjoyment. As soon as we got home, we bought the sake online. When I looked it up, I learned that Setoichi is also served at Chef Kei Kobayashi’s restaurant in France.

We are truly grateful to have had the pleasure of welcoming you, JAKEGAI, from so far away. Our sake vessels have been carefully collected one by one by the proprietress. To help you enjoy your selected sake with all five senses, we thoughtfully choose a vessel for each order. We would be delighted if you were able to enjoy that moment not only in taste, but also with your eyes. We are also honored that you took interest in the sake from Seto Shuzo that you brought home. They are a highly regarded and fast-growing brewery here in Kanagawa, and we confidently recommend their creative and deeply flavorful lineup. For this stay, you used our Asagi -ASAGI- Room, the only two-story layout among our four detached villas. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by going up and down the stairs to access the bath and other areas. At Yui, our other three detached villas include single-story layouts and options with partial mezzanines, offering more convenient choices depending on your needs. In addition, we will begin accepting Reservations for our newly renovated main-building Rooms after Golden Week. With easier access to the dining area as well, we hope you will try a different Room next time and enjoy our cuisine and sake even more. All of us look forward to welcoming you again.

  A Variety of Dishes to Celebrate the New Year — Yui’s New Year Cuisine

  This was my first visit of the year. We enjoyed New Year’s dishes such as sweet black beans, herring roe, and ozoni soup. I felt happy to be able to relax in Yui’s bath again in the new year. However, because of the size of the bath, construction seems to be difficult and it has been under renovation for a long time. Since the corridor was being demolished and a tower structure was under construction, we were taken by shuttle car to the dining area. We received even more dishes than usual, plus a late-night snack, and we were very satisfied, though we found the crab difficult to eat. At night it was windy and the open-air bath was cold, but soaking in an Onsen in the cold is exceptional—it left both body and mind feeling lighter. On departure, we did not receive the drink that is usually given to us. I hope the construction will finish soon. It somehow didn’t feel possible to relax during our stay.

  Open-air bath with blooming camellias: Spend a serene and enriching New Year's at Yui.

  Eighth stay this year. Thank you so much for your hospitality. This time, we stayed in a maisonette-style private villa with an open-air bath overlooking the river on the second floor. By closing the glass doors, it becomes an indoor bath, allowing us to enjoy the natural hot spring water all night without feeling too cold even during late hours. The camellias that bloomed last winter were beautifully in season again this year. Dinner was served at the main building's dining room, which is currently under renovation. Every dish—from grilled items and dobin-mushi to shabu-shabu with golden-eye snapper and the main meat course—was delicious and exceptional. My husband, who has many food preferences, couldn't eat duck this time; we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by his dietary restrictions. Dessert was brought to our Room so we could enjoy it while soaking our feet in a footbath and leisurely writing New Year's cards. Breakfast was served in our Room with an array of small dishes and freshly cooked rice from a traditional pot. We savored steamed tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet), meat dishes, chimaki (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), and more. Thank you for not only providing beverages after breakfast but also preparing drinks for us to enjoy during our car ride home. Once again, it was a truly satisfying stay. We were deeply touched by the unexpected and delightful surprise during your farewell. The New Year's card, written at the footbath, included an adorable photo of your cat along with a picture of the two of you taken at our inn. It was such a heartwarming gesture to see that memories from YUI became part of your family’s special moments—it felt like an irreplaceable surprise and an early Christmas gift for us! As mentioned in your kind comments about the camellias, our landlady has carefully selected and planted flowers throughout YUI's grounds so that there is always something blooming year-round. From winter to spring, we have camellias and daffodils; in spring, cherry blossoms; hydrangeas during the rainy season; crape myrtles in summer; and vibrant autumn foliage across our property and surrounding mountains in fall. We’ve nurtured these plants with hopes that guests visiting from urban areas might recall fondly saying things like, "We came here around this time before," during their stay.   Satisfied.

  Repeat guest. Once again, very satisfied. The semi-open-air bath was especially wonderful, surrounded by autumn leaves and the gentle sound of the stream, allowing for a truly precious experience. One minor issue was that during meal service, there were moments when the scent of perfume was too strong this time as well. Looking forward to my next visit!

  Seasonal Delights: Matsutake Mushrooms and Abundant Hot Spring Waters

  Another unforgettable stay. The deep greenery shielding us from the midsummer sun and the abundant natural hot spring water were perfect. The Onsen temperature was always just right, providing ultimate relaxation. Dinner was exceptional, featuring creative dishes with ingredients like corn and matsutake mushrooms. Although my husband, who dislikes shellfish, jokingly said it might be traumatic for him, the fresh abalone grilled to perfection—even its liver—was incredible. It truly felt like a seasonal transition. We enjoyed a private and serene space with no sense of others around us, allowing for quality time together as a couple. Since we tend to get hungry at night, we appreciated the late-night snack provided—Inari sushi filled with plenty of summer vegetables—it was absolutely delicious! Thank you so much. While enjoying our snack, we played Othello; my husband wanted to quit when his loss seemed inevitable but played until the end—and I won again this time! At breakfast, we noticed that the tableware had changed from before; it brought a refreshing new atmosphere which we loved. The small bowls featuring seafood were delightful alongside steamed egg custard and tender meat dishes that left us fully satisfied.   Perfect Hospitality Clear Your Mind and Body

  This was our best stay yet, even after visiting multiple times. The chef kindly accommodated my husband's preference to avoid shellfish except for shrimp and sea urchin, and for the first time, he said the meal was absolutely delicious despite his picky tastes. Thank you for considering our preferences in the menu. The bright blue summer sky stretched above the open-air bath, with lush greenery and the soothing sound of a waterfall creating a truly relaxing Onsen experience. There was an Othello game in our room, and I had an intense match with my husband where I made a comeback victory! He kept reflecting on where he went wrong afterward, but it became a wonderful memory of this trip. We deeply appreciate your exceptional hospitality and hope to visit again soon without much delay.   Early Summer Yui: Relax to the Soothing Sound of Waterfalls

  I chose the "Room Assigned on Arrival Plan" and ended up in the same maisonette-type room called Asanegi as last time. The greenery was vibrant, and since it had just rained, the river flowing in front of us had more water, with the sound of waterfalls audible throughout the night. The Onsen featured a semi-open-air bath that was very comfortable, and the terrace with a footbath on the first floor was also pleasant. Staying as a couple felt spacious enough to not even notice each other's presence. Dinner was served in a private room at the main building under renovation. Thank you for accommodating my husband's many food preferences when planning the menu. The late-night meal was also incredibly delicious. It was our third stay here, and we were thoroughly satisfied again! Looking forward to visiting next month!

  The service and meals were excellent.

  Previously, I stayed in a different Room at Shiyo without meals. This time, I stayed with two meals included, and although the upsell for just the meals cost nearly 70,000 yen, I was thrilled to find that the service and taste were worth every penny. It exceeded my expectations. It seems there are some very spacious and luxurious Rooms not listed on IKYU.com, so I would like to consider them if I have another opportunity in the future.

  Accommodation for a spring journey with the sound of a flowing river and birdsong

  We stayed in a maisonette-type room as a couple, and the space was more than enough for just the two of us. The bedroom was located on a mezzanine halfway up the stairs, and there was an open-air bath on the second floor. The only sounds were the murmuring of the river flowing in front and birdsong, creating a completely private space where we could enjoy a relaxing time. The Onsen featured free-flowing hot spring water at just the right temperature. There was also a footbath on the deck space on the first floor, which we used while waiting for breakfast to be prepared. Dinner was served in the main building under construction, accessed via a corridor walk. Since we had visited just last month, the chef kindly adjusted our menu accordingly. However, it happened that my husband is not fond of grilled Ise lobster and I am not fond of venison, so unfortunately we couldn't fully enjoy it this time around. We felt sorry for requesting last-minute changes but appreciated that they replaced my husband's lobster with grilled scorpionfish instead. We ordered several types of sake to pair with our meal; each time they brought out different sake bottles (tokkuri), including one that made bird-like chirping sounds when poured—an amusing touch! The ice cubes were shaped like roses or floating penguins—such creative details added fun to our dining experience. For late-night snacks, they prepared six small rice balls along with salmon fillets for us—it was incredibly delicious! Thank you very much. After breakfast during checkout, they thoughtfully handed iced coffee to my husband and herbal tea to me as parting gifts. Although dinner fell short this time around due to personal preferences regarding certain dishes—we would love another opportunity someday soon!

Yugawara is a charming hot spring town offering unique seasonal attractions year-round. In spring, the "Plum Blossoms Festival" at Makuyama Park (February to early March) features thousands of blooming trees. In summer (late June to mid-July), you can experience the enchanting sight of fireflies at night. Autumn brings vibrant red, orange, and yellow foliage from late November to early December in the mountains and parks. Thank you again for staying with us.   Spacious private space with beautiful starry skies

  Each accommodation is an independent building, ensuring complete privacy. An open and private space for relaxation. The bath is spacious, and lying in the outdoor bath offers a stunning view of the starry sky. The room includes a flowing hot spring indoor bath, which was incredibly soothing. The wooden sink was unique and impressive. When I arrived wearing a kimono, they kindly offered to provide a kimono hanger and full-length mirror in the Room. Dinner was served at the main building with perfect timing for each dish, making it an enjoyable dining experience. The highlight dishes were beef fillet topped with sea urchin as the main course and rice cooked together with eel egg casserole—both were deliciously timed perfectly. Breakfast was prepared in the Room so I could enjoy it leisurely at my own pace. The steamed vegetables and meat served using an electric steamer called "Mushi Zanmai" were so delicious that I purchased one on Amazon afterward! When I requested rice balls as a late-night snack, they kindly made four pieces accompanied by grilled salmon—such thoughtful service! As part of the Diamond Member benefits, we received Koshihikari rice; upon returning to Tokyo, we cooked it immediately while reminiscing about this wonderful stay. We will definitely visit again!

  The best Ryokan in your life

  We visited on a special occasion. We stayed in a Room called "Toka" in the detached area, and the interior was absolutely stunning. The high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a cozy sunken kotatsu living area, a footbath terrace, and a riverside view leading to a water basin—all of it was spacious yet refined without any waste. The highlight was the Onsen in the bathroom. We heard it was a natural hot spring with free-flowing water, and the large bathroom, the sound of the river, and the nature spreading out before us made for an incredibly luxurious experience. Of course, we couldn't hear any sounds or voices from neighboring guest Rooms, ensuring a completely private space. For dinner, we brought our own wine, and the corkage fee was reasonable, which left a good impression. Naturally, the menu also offered reasonably priced options for glass wine and sake, which we found thoughtful. The food was, of course, delicious, but the rice stood out as exceptionally tasty—it was the best rice we've ever had. It seemed to be their own brand of rice, and we could feel the care put into it. After returning to the Room, we were able to order snacks through room service. The quality exceeded the price, in our opinion. Overall, it was a truly special experience, and we left with a strong desire to return. The service was incredibly attentive yet natural, and we were pleasantly surprised in many ways. We would love to visit again on another special day!

  A Property with excellent service, delicious cuisine, and beautiful Rooms.

  This Property, which I had been curious about due to its high reputation, left me deeply impressed during my recent visit. First of all, the hospitality was outstanding. From the Shuttle Service staff to the dinner staff and those who guided us from the Room to the dining venue, everyone treated us with great care, allowing us to enjoy a pleasant stay. Additionally, they were very attentive to even the smallest details. For example, during breakfast, they placed the beverages—tea or coffee—in the appropriate positions without asking, based on prior conversations. Such meticulous service was truly remarkable. The Room was also exceptional, well-maintained, and clean, while preserving the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese house. With underfloor heating, it was warm even in winter, and the view from the Room and the bath were both stunning. As for the meals, having visited numerous Ryokans, it had been a while since I was so moved by the taste. From the moment of arrival, the hospitality and the Room instantly captivated me, and the meals made me feel that I must visit again. One regretful point was that the Diamond benefits were not recognized, and I missed out on receiving them. However, I only realized this on the train ride home, so it was mutual oversight, and given the level of detailed service, it is understandable. I deeply regret not being able to experience the tea selection of such a wonderful Property that offers such exquisite cuisine. This disappointment reflects the high expectations raised by the satisfaction during my stay. The meals were so exceptional that I could think this way. Even with the oversight of the benefits, I still rated the service 5 stars. That’s how excellent the hospitality at this Property is. The service, the Room, and the meals—all are equally remarkable. This is a wonderful Property that fulfills such desires, so I strongly recommend making a Reservation if you are considering it.

  This is my first time using this service.

  The wear and tear around the washbasin and bathtub was noticeable. The overall lighting is dim, so elderly guests might need to be careful with their footing. The service might depend on compatibility, but it did not match well with us. The meals, both breakfast and dinner, were excellent. The Shuttle Service to Yugawara Station is a pleasant service.

  I stayed at Hanare S...

  I stayed at Hanare Shiyou Suirei. From the moment I arrived, I received courteous service, which made me feel at ease. Suirei is a three-story structure from the bedroom to the indoor bath, and there are additional stairs to move from the indoor bath to the open-air bath, which might be a bit challenging for those with weak legs. However, the ambiance is superb. The room is clean, and amenities like yukata and towels are sufficient, making it comfortable. Both the open-air bath and the indoor bath were slightly warm, but the water was good for a long soak. There is a river weir right in front of the open-air bath, and the dynamic sound of water like a waterfall was extraordinary and pleasant. I felt that a little more privacy screening at the entrance area, which you pass through when moving from the bath to the living room, would be nice. Dinner was fulfilling in both quality and quantity, with good tableware and decoration, making it delicious. Breakfast was also tasty. The ingredients filled with the landlady's love for Akita were also great. It was a wonderful property that I would like to visit again.

  It was the worst meal.

  I was honestly surprised by the extremely poor meals. It was shocking considering the charge of over 100,000 yen per person. The dinner was at the level of a 5,000 yen set meal, and the breakfast was like a 1,500 yen meal. I can't say it was delicious at all... It was a property I never want to visit again. It's disappointing!
