    The Onsen is excellent.

After 25 years of visiting Nozawa Onsen just for skiing without staying overnight, this was my first stay. The Onsen was incredibly relaxing, and since it’s available all night, I went in from around 5 a.m.! Every dish was delicious; being in season, we had bamboo shoot rice. The attendant’s hospitality was wonderful, and we had a great conversation about visiting Togakushi Okusha the next day. Breakfast the following morning was also very enjoyable. I’m grateful to have stayed at such a lovely Accommodation and to all the staff. I’d love to stay again!

The hospitality of everyone at the Accommodation is wonderful.

The Onsen was absolutely wonderful, and we thoroughly enjoyed the delicious meals featuring mountain vegetables, fresh produce, and river fish that let us truly experience the nature of northern Nagano. The staff were attentive without being overbearing, which made our stay very comfortable. We were also happy that the tap water tasted great to drink. The only minor issue was that the shower in the Room bathroom had low water pressure and wasn’t very usable, so we rated the Facility 4 points. Overall, we felt this is an Accommodation we would definitely like to visit again.

    The creative Japanes...

The creative Japanese cuisine and kaiseki dishes looked appealing but were disappointing in taste. However, the greatest delight was the bath, with its traditional charm, excellent water quality, and perfect temperature control, which provided a truly enjoyable experience.

Feeling uneasy due to a bad first impression...

Due to road construction, I called the day before to get directions for driving. However, the directions were incorrect, and the intersection I was told to turn at was closed for construction, causing panic. In the rain, on narrow roads, I had no choice but to keep driving and somehow managed to arrive. Even after reaching the parking lot, no one came out for a while, leaving me feeling uneasy. I was asked to sit down and write my name, and before being offered tea, I was shown to my room. I was told to unlock the door myself, and the staff simply said, "I'll leave your luggage here," and left. There was no explanation about the towels for the bath or anything else. By this point, I was already in shock. It wasn’t late at night; it was 4 PM. I wasn’t expecting tea and sweets, but after finally arriving at the accommodation I had been looking forward to, I felt disappointed by the lack of hospitality. The food and onsen were great, but first impressions are important.

First Family Trip to Nozawa Onsen

For a family trip loving onsen, we booked Sakaya Ryokan without hesitation, and it was excellent. Although we were a bit worried as we heard Nozawa Onsen is quite hot, Sakaya Ryokan had three levels of bath temperatures and an open-air bath with lower temperature, allowing us to soak in comfortably. The natural sulfur onsen with free-flowing spring water and the historical, charming baths were absolutely wonderful. The ryokan seems to be an old building with history but was clean and provided a pleasant stay. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Even my elderly parents went for seconds of rice, which shows how tasty the dishes and rice must have been! The foreign staff provided polite and pleasant service; although there was one small misunderstanding, they promptly corrected it—truly what you’d expect from a long-established ryokan! As someone working in the service industry myself, I found it educational as well. There was a slightly embarrassing incident when leaving, but I deeply appreciated the thoughtful care of the female staff member! It became a memorable trip filled with joy.

Convenient location for exploring the city

Conveniently located near the Nozawa Onsen town, perfect for exploring on foot. Since the streets in the Onsen area are narrow, it is recommended to check your route beforehand if coming by car. During our stay, it was extremely hot, and the air conditioning in the room could have been more effective. Many of the staff were foreigners, likely catering to inbound tourism demand. Meals were partially pre-prepared, which was convenient for us as quick eaters. More explanation about using the public bath (e.g., availability of towels) would have been helpful. Each room had only one basket for bath items; having at least two would be better. The 24-hour flowing Onsen in the public bath was very satisfying—thank you!

Thank you for the courteous service.

We stayed with our children, their spouses, and two young grandchildren to escape the summer heat. Despite the unusually hot weather this year, we enjoyed playing with our grandchildren at the pool and sports park surrounded by nature in the Nozawa Onsen area. The historic Onsen at this accommodation, which retains its traditional charm, was well-maintained and very pleasant to use. Throughout our stay, the staff provided exceptionally courteous service, allowing us to have a comfortable and enjoyable time. Thank you very much!

Repeat guests of our nostalgic and welcoming accommodation

I have visited every year for the past few years, and the compact room has become my usual room, where I enjoy the view and feel comfortable. Since my hometown is Tokamachi, I have been taken care of by Sakaya since childhood and have many memories. It was more than 50 years ago... When I visited again, there were changes with time, but the bath remained as it was after being rebuilt long ago, and the Nozawa Onsen water soaked into my body. "This water really works"—that's how it felt. The highlight is dinner; since both my spouse and I are not fond of river fish, we chose the meat course. While shabu-shabu is the main dish, each item on the menu reflects the heart of this accommodation. We finished everything completely. The number of dishes may be fewer than expected but just right in portion size; with carefully prepared dishes and delicious white rice made from excellent quality rice—it’s simply perfect!

You can enjoy cherry blossoms from the open-air bath, and the quality of the hot spring water is excellent. Highly recommended! Would love to visit again.

Very satisfied with the facilities and hospitality that exceeded expectations.

The entire facility was very well maintained, and everything was very clean both inside and outside the Room. The service provided by the staff was very kind and courteous, reflecting a high level of quality. The open-air bath amidst the falling snow was very magical, allowing us to enjoy an extremely elegant and luxurious moment. The food was also very delicious, but the children's meal differed from the information we received from IKYU.com, so we hope for closer coordination with Ryokan Sakaya.

    It was a wonderful Stays!

My first time at Nozawa Onsen. I was excited even before going, and as I imagined, it was a wonderful property & onsen area! Upon arrival, I immediately went to the nearby Oyu. It was really a hot onsen, but once I got in, it seemed like I could get addicted to it. The ryokan's onsen was also somewhat hot, but the open-air bath was at a comfortable temperature, and I ended up soaking for a long time. The private bath was also excellent, and although I intended to just wash my body, the water and atmosphere were so good that I enjoyed the bath until the last minute of the 40-minute session. The meal suited my taste and was delicious, so I finished it completely. The gentleman in charge was very friendly and shared various information about the local area & Hokushin. As an aside, along Route 117 from Iiyama to Nozawa Onsen, Nozawana was planted. I heard the nanohana flowers are also beautiful! My first visit to Nozawa Onsen was truly a wonderful property, making it a highly satisfying trip.
