A cozy, relaxing Accommodation.
I stayed here in August. As an Accommodation affiliated with the Japan Association for the Protection of Secret Hot Springs, it was incredibly quiet—and I was surprised when the inn suddenly appeared in such a secluded setting. Surrounded by greenery, I was soothed by the sound of the river and insects. The main building has a wonderful sense of history, while the Room had been renovated and was very comfortable. Overall, it isn’t overly luxurious, but it feels cozy and relaxing. The mineral-rich Maki no Shimizu spring water could be enjoyed even inside the Room, and it tasted great. For bathing, you can reserve Mountain Bath (Deep Bath / Stone Bath) for private use depending on the time slot. If you want to secure your preferred time, I recommend checking in early. The large public bath that’s available anytime also had a pleasant open-air bath. However, in summer there are horseflies around, so it may be hard to fully relax. The Onsen water quality was excellent—my skin felt silky smooth afterward. Meals were served in a private dining room; both the sliced raw carp and meat dishes were generous portions. The breakfast rice porridge cooked with hot spring water was especially outstanding. They also offered many local sake options, all of which were delicious. There is a smoking area near the front desk, and at certain times I noticed a lingering cigarette smell. Overall though, I was very satisfied. I’d love to stay again. Thank you very much.

We visited again this year to enjoy the wild vegetable course! The full-course meal packed with seasonal mountain vegetables was absolutely satisfying!!

A wonderful Ryokan.
This is our favorite Ryokan, and we have stayed here many times. With Shuttle Service from Tsubame-Sanjo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, it’s easy to reach even though it feels like a hidden hot spring retreat. The meals are outstanding, and we are always completely satisfied. As a member of the Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns, the Onsen is, of course, wonderful as well. My husband and I are already talking about when to visit next. We will definitely be back.

A hidden hot spring I’d love to visit again!
Returning for the first time in over a decade, I thoroughly enjoyed the large public bath along the gorge and the private bath. The familiar salmon and wild mountain vegetable dishes brought back fond memories, and in addition to the breakfast rice porridge cooked with this Accommodation’s salty spring water, the freshly cooked white rice made with Maki spring water was also exceptional. The Accommodation is well maintained, with some things unchanged and others more convenient than before, making for a comfortable and nostalgic stay. Thank you very much.

Your First Trip to Niigata
There was no snow in the city, but as we got closer to the Ryokan, the remaining snow got deeper—and my hay fever symptoms even eased up lol. The inside of the building feels like a maze due to multiple additions over time, but it’s wonderful: solid, stately architecture with a real sense of history. Every dish was delicious, made with local ingredients and prepared to bring out their natural flavors. And of course, the sake was excellent! It might feel a bit small for some men, but for me it was just the right amount. The baths were great too—nice atmosphere, perfect temperature, and high-quality water. Next time, I’d love to relax with some sake and enjoy the lush green scenery.

The bathroom is disappointing.
First stay after becoming an Onsen Sommelier Master. Upon entering the large public bath, there was an indescribable strong smell, possibly disinfectant? The onsen water should be odorless and colorless, but it had a strong disinfectant smell. The small space between the changing room and the bath area had a bath mat laid out, but it was very dirty. The concrete floor underneath was peeling with debris scattered around, making me hesitant to walk barefoot. Don't staff check these areas occasionally? In contrast, the private bath was quiet and decent; however, the stones in the stone bath were slimy. It made me wonder how often they drain and clean it thoroughly. As for meals, I was surprised by how small and thin the meat portions were during dinner. The sauce was delicious enough that I could have eaten ten times more! Perhaps increasing portion sizes would be better? After breakfast, I enjoyed some delicious coffee in the lobby area; however, it felt too cold there—perhaps adding a fireplace would help? I brought my coffee back to my room to enjoy drinking it there instead.

I was drawn to the wild vegetable course and decided to visit. The private open-air bath and massage were excellent!

Onsen, a property with a good bath
I often travel to Niigata Prefecture, but this was my first time using this property. The staff at Stays were very kind and attentive, which deeply impressed both my wife and me. The quality of the onsen water was very pleasant, making our skin smooth, which my wife also enjoyed. However, I honestly expected it to have more of a hidden onsen feel, so I was a bit disappointed by its modernity. Overall, it was a very satisfying property, and I would like to visit again.

I deliberately stayed in a Room that is a registered tangible cultural property of the country, but...
We enjoyed delicious cuisine at a secluded Stays in the mountain stream, with a wonderful building and garden. The rich, strong saline spring was amazing... We deliberately stayed at the Ryokufukan, a nationally registered tangible cultural property... Despite the staff's diligent efforts to exterminate them, stink bugs were swarming, unfortunately, flying around the Room one after another... I think we exterminated more than 50 in one night... We couldn't open the windows at all... That was the only disappointment...

The charming building, the private open-air bath, and the cuisine—all of these make it one of the best accommodations I've ever stayed at.

Amidst the abundant greenery
The path to the entrance is lovely and raises expectations. The room was on the second floor of the main building and did not have a toilet or washroom, but it was a corner room with two windows offering views of both the garden in front of the entrance and the valley side, providing an excellent location. Although the building is old, it is well-maintained. I was very satisfied with the open-air bath, which was not enclosed by bamboo screens. The food was elaborate, and the pumpkin gratin was served in a small hollowed-out pumpkin, perfect for the Halloween season. I enjoyed all the baths, but since it's a hot spring inn, it would be nice to have one more bath towel.
