This long-established Accommodation rests on its reputation and offers the worst service.
There were many issues, but since the price was just under JPY 90,000—these days not outrageously expensive, more of a mid-range level—we put up with it. In the end, however, we had an awful experience. Checkout is at 11:00. About 10 minutes before that, a staff member in a kimono (the proprietress?) suddenly opened the door and peeked into our Room. She did knock, but she opened the door instantly before we even had time to respond—making the knock meaningless. I had just finished showering and was shirtless, but she didn’t seem to care. I complained, but she showed no remorse and simply said, “Well… it’s time.” It felt like she thought we were being difficult. Even if it was close to checkout time, it still wasn’t past 11:00. Her reaction showed zero awareness that looking into a guest Room without permission is an invasion of privacy. It made me wonder if they think they can do anything because “they’re letting us stay at their Ryokan.” There were other problems as well. While we were at dinner they laid out the futon; since we had no valuables we left without locking the Room, but when we returned from dinner the Room had been locked. If they locked it for security reasons, they should tell guests. If your key is inside you could be locked out—yet they clearly didn’t think of that. After breakfast our futon was automatically put away. Some guests may want to lie down again right up until checkout; not only did they fail to confirm this with us, they don’t even seem to have the basic idea of informing guests in advance before entering their Room. Again, it seems like the Ryokan believes staff can enter guest Rooms whenever they want. While someone is staying there, that Room is private space—but their awareness of that is zero. Our belongings were moved without permission and it was unpleasant. Drinks were also cleared away without asking. Was this their way of saying “leave immediately after breakfast”? As for meals: nothing stood out at all—no memorable dishes or ingredients I would call delicious—just sparse items like something you’d find at a Ryokan from 50 years ago. As expected, much of it seemed pre-made. Not that it matters now anyway, but there was no explanation of any dishes. The serving timing wasn’t considered at all—they just brought things whenever suited them and set them down. The hair dryer in the Room looked decades old and had weak airflow. Amenities were public-bath level. Towels didn’t dry well. The futon was thin and uncomfortable for anyone used to beds. There weren’t adequate shutters or curtains; light leaked in early in the morning and made it hard to sleep. We are a couple who stays about 300 nights a year on average; this was one of the worst three Ryokan experiences we’ve ever had.

I made a Reservation on IKYU with a non-smoking request, but...
Perhaps because I am used to staying at atmospheric registered tangible cultural property accommodations and high-end Ryokan, I was not satisfied with many aspects of this stay. First, regarding the Room: as it is the long-established “Yoro-no-Ma,” the ink paintings and deer carvings were wonderful. However, I was bothered by odors coming from various places. In particular, the sewage-like smell from the bathroom was unbearable. The toilet light bulb was out, and a metal fitting on the bath bucket came off. The bath itself was extremely small by today’s standards, and I also noticed slime on the underside of the floor chair in front of it. There was no bath mat, the face towels were very thin, and amenities were minimal. Since I usually stay at places that provide skincare items, it was inconvenient not to have them here. What surprised me most was that large ashtrays were placed all around the Room. These days there are fewer places that allow smoking indoors, and I really dislike cigarette smells—so when choosing a Ryokan, I always select an Accommodation on IKYU that meets non-smoking criteria. Even though I set non-smoking conditions this time as well, it turned out to be a smoking Room!! The Room also felt cramped once the futons were laid out. After they were set up, we spent most of our time in the anteroom; however, there were no chairs with back support—only floor cushions—so my back hurt. The tatami mats also showed noticeable wear. As for drinks, there were only green tea bags; no mineral water and no black tea or coffee. Water in a pot was provided at night, but since I do not drink tap water unless it has been boiled thoroughly, it wasn’t useful for me. As for breakfast—perhaps my expectations are too high—but there wasn’t anything particularly tasty. The dashi didn’t suit my palate either. Overall, it felt like staying at a simple guesthouse that doesn’t fit modern times; in that case, a Business Hotel might be easier because you don’t have to worry as much about etiquette or consideration for others around you. The Ryokan staff worked very hard, which made it all the more disappointing that shortcomings in facilities and maintenance stood out so clearly.

I would like the quality of the food to be improved, even if the quantity is reduced. The Room was a suite. The Room was spacious and nice, but the stones were stylishly scattered, making it easy to trip at night, so it would be nice if you could consider that. It was a wonderful Room with Kofukuji Temple right in front.
