Both the space and the staff were warm and welcoming.
I’m so glad I was lucky enough to get a Reservation at the Accommodation I’d been hoping to stay at when visiting Shodoshima! Thank you for emailing me in advance to confirm that my stay date fell on your Children’s Day, and for your very attentive support even before we arrived. The meals were excellent—we enjoyed plenty of Shodoshima’s local vegetables and fish, and we were completely satisfied. Thank you as well for the careful explanations of each dish and for adding a final message. The Onsen was private and wonderful. It was a shame that our timing didn’t work out, and in the end we couldn’t use one of them no matter when we checked… I also really appreciated the free drink service. We were too full to try the homemade fruit drinks or alcohol, so next time I’d like to come with more time (and room in my stomach), haha. Breakfast was delicious too—I finished everything! It was fun chatting about wanting to go to live shows, haha. I hope you enjoy your private time as well, so you can do even more wonderful work. One small thing: I wish the blind on the Room bathroom window could be adjusted. It felt like it might be visible from outside… haha Other than that, it was an incredibly relaxing space—perfect. Shodoshima is such a wonderful place. I’ll be back!

It was great.
We stayed here to celebrate my mother’s 88th birthday. We really appreciated the warm hospitality. The portion sizes were just right—not too much. The vegetables in particular were delicious. Breakfast was also very enjoyable. Thank you very much.

We had a relaxing stay.
The Room features a Western-style sitting area on a slightly lower level, and the faint sound of water from the small courtyard garden seemed to deepen the tranquility—I sat there alone for quite a long time. There is also a small study next to the bedroom; when I lifted the yukimi shoji, I saw olive branches filling the view, with cherry blossoms in full bloom beyond them, where Japanese white-eyes were pecking at the flowers. The spacious terrace offers distant views over the townscape of Shoyu and out to sea, and at night in particular we enjoyed a sky full of stars. (As it was that season, small flying insects were around, so we opened and closed the doors carefully.) We slowly savored an Accommodation-exclusive soy sauce kaiseki dinner in comfortable chair seating; every dish was thoughtfully prepared, and the island vegetables were wonderfully fresh. The final dish—local mixed rice—was truly delicious, and I regret that I was already too full to have seconds. The rare metasilicic-acid hot spring water had a well-balanced pH level and felt pleasantly moisturizing for me, as my hands tend to get dry. I would love to stay again next time and look forward to trying a different Room as well. Thank you very much.

This was the Accommo...
This was the Accommodation my husband had said he wanted to visit at least once. We are truly grateful for the wonderful meals and the proprietress’s thoughtful hospitality. I hope to stay healthy so we can visit again. For the first time at this age, I came to understand just how deep and complex soy sauce can be.

A wonderful showroom-like Accommodation on Shodoshima Island
I’d long heard this Accommodation was the sure choice for a small-scale stay, so I arrived with high expectations. With attentive service, Facilities filled with thoughtful details, and cuisine that truly embodies Shodoshima, it was wonderful—about as close to a perfect 100 as you can get. From the welcome ice cream at check-in onward, everything is crafted with care, and the flavors are outstanding. If I had to mention just one request… I would have liked the staff to be a bit more proactive in engaging with us. This may be a matter of preference either way, but it felt very hands-off—neither too close nor too distant. That said, I’ve already recommended it to many people I know. I hope this kind of Accommodation continues for a long time—I’m cheering you on. It’s truly excellent!

It was a meal that offered an authentic taste of Japan’s soy sauce culture.
This was our first stay on Shodoshima, and we had the pleasure of staying at “Shimayado Mari.” The Room was spacious, and although it was Japanese-style, it had twin beds—more than enough to rest after our travels. We had reserved a private bath in advance, so we were able to relax and enjoy a soak before dinner. For dinner we chose counter seating, and the meal prepared by the kind-hearted head chef exceeded our expectations. Being on Shodoshima, there were various types of soy sauce to try, and some dishes used moromi as well; we enjoyed them all while having lively conversation. After dinner, we joined the “Night Walk” and were guided on a nighttime visit to Goishiyama Shrine, where we gazed at the starry sky for the first time in quite a while. Breakfast was also carefully prepared, and it was wonderful to have crispy scorched rice again after so long. Both dinner and breakfast included plenty of vegetables, which we truly appreciated as a couple. On our way back to the Room after breakfast, we were surprised to see staff cleaning guests’ cars. At check-out they asked about our plans for the day and recommended a soy sauce producer; being able to tour their wooden-barrel soy sauce brewing was a great experience. There may not be many staff members, but you can really feel how sincerely everyone works for their guests. We would love to stay here again.

Because departures are timed to match sunset, in July the tour leaves after 6:00 p.m. (sometimes overlapping with dinner time or the private Onsen), while in mid-December it departs after 4:00 p.m. (and some guests have not yet checked in). Although there have been various challenges, we have been deeply moved by the blessings of nature. A Safe and Comfortable Accommodation
It had been seven years, but thanks to your thoughtful attention to detail, the Accommodation has become even better. It seems you now offer tours as well, so I imagine that staying two nights would allow guests to fully enjoy everything—but in that case, what would the meals be like? I found myself wanting to visit Shodoshima again just for this Accommodation. Thank you very much to all the staff. *Request: The washbasin bowl is a bit small and tends to splash, which is slightly concerning.

60th Birthday Trip
To celebrate my 60th birthday, my wife and I took a trip just for the two of us, and at her request we chose Shodoshima Onsen Mari. The meal was a soy sauce kaiseki featuring Shodoshima specialties—gentle on the stomach and truly delicious. Shodoshima may not have much, but it is a calming island, and we enjoyed connecting with it.

Highly Satisfied
A beautifully designed accommodation where old and new coexist, offering a cozy yet stylish atmosphere. Check-in was smooth, and the guidance ensured minimal interaction with other guests during meals, allowing for a very relaxing stay. The meals were delicious, with creative touches such as menu presentation and fresh soy sauce extraction that made the experience enjoyable. I would love to visit again when staying in Shodoshima. The reason I rated 4 for the facility and meals is because in "O" room, there were no outlets near the bedside or desk, making it difficult to charge devices or work on a PC. Additionally, the rice served during meals felt plain and slightly lacking in flavor. However, these are minor points as everything else was perfect. Thank you very much!

Regarding the issue of "bedside outlets in Ono Room" that you pointed out, we have consulted with our architect and added additional outlets, including USB ports. As for the "bland taste of rice," currently, Mari's rice is contract-produced annually (approximately 1.5 tons) from the Hetsuyama and Yasuda districts of Shodoshima Island. The rice is stored as brown rice in an agricultural cooperative's low-temperature storage facility and milled at our accommodation as needed before serving it fresh to guests. We are discussing this matter again with our head chef regarding its flavor profile. Additionally, starting September 1st this year, we have switched to new Koshihikari rice harvested in 2025 from Hetsuyama district. Using your valuable feedback as motivation, we will continue making steady efforts to create an even more wonderful and comfortable accommodation experience. Kaiseki Meal to Savor Soy Sauce
We had a wonderful stay in the room. The staff were calm, kind, and created a relaxing atmosphere. The highlight was the Soy Sauce Kaiseki meal, where we could compare four types of soy sauce. The seasoning of the dishes was excellent, enhancing the quality of the ingredients. If I had to mention one downside, it would be that in our detached room, the air conditioning in the second-floor washroom was not very effective. The luxurious sake bath with an entire bottle of sake in our room's bath was truly impressive. We also enjoyed a private bath and were able to relax thoroughly. This is definitely an accommodation we would love to visit again!

This year, we have chosen Soy Sauce Kaiseki at Mari.
I stayed at Mari's accommodation after a long time. The food is delicious, and I could relax in the room. It's my favorite accommodation. Of course, I purchased olive oil again this year. I'll visit again when it runs out. Thank you in advance. Next year, should I choose the soy sauce kaiseki or the olive kaiseki? I'll enjoy deciding from now on!

Truly inspiring and impressive
You will be greeted at the port by the owner herself in a luxury car, and during the approximately 30-minute drive to the accommodation, you can enjoy detailed stories about the history of the accommodation and Shodoshima. The room, bath, and meals all provided exceptional hospitality for an unforgettable experience. The stargazing tour starting at 9 PM was also led by the president himself, who drove the bus while sharing fascinating insights about the island's history and tourist information for a full hour of enjoyment. The dark mountain path leading to Temple No. 2 of Shodoshima's Eighty-Eight Temples offered unique experiences like encountering raccoons—something you wouldn't normally experience. This accommodation is simply outstanding!
