I have stayed here several times. As always, I am very satisfied with the Facility and the meals, but it is disappointing that the staff service feels below standard. Last time, there was no explanation of the Room at all, so I had to ask someone else to come to the Room and explain it. This time was almost the same; in addition, there was no explanation whatsoever about the IKYU member benefits, so I had to check at the front desk and receive tickets and other items. Because the in-room bath and meals are excellent, I hope for improvement in staff service.

We had a relaxing stay.
I was able to relax and enjoy the Onsen. Thank you very much. The Facility was clean, and the meals were excellent. I ended up eating too much, haha. Thank you for taking such good care of me.

The Facility is excellent! But...
The in-house guidance at check-in was very minimal (I noticed various things later). At check-out, I dragged my luggage to the shop to make purchases, but the staff acted as if they didn’t notice (especially the more experienced employees). There were many small issues, but overall the service did not match the Room grade. The meals had a good variety and layout, but many dishes tasted watery and were disappointing—it felt like an example of simply thawing frozen food. The open-air bath in the Room was excellent!! It was also great that there were three other baths.

Spectacular views of Sounkyo Gorge, and the bath area was spacious with friendly staff.
Great location—it's a quick walk to the cable car. There are three bath areas to choose from, but unfortunately some were under repair during our stay. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent. A highly recommended hot spring Ryokan.

I was really looking forward to it, so I’m disappointed.
Due to heavy snowfall in the Sapporo area, we left about two hours early and arrived about two hours before the usual check-in time. We entered the Hotel, but no one spoke to us, so we went to the front desk and asked whether check-in was possible. We were told that check-in would be after 3:00 PM. Since our Reservation included early check-in, we checked in at 2:00 PM, but there was no explanation of the benefits. When we asked about them at checkout, we were simply told, “You had benefits included.” We were satisfied with the Room amenities overall, but the bathroom blind control was broken (temporarily patched) and could not be operated. The toilet bidet also had extremely low water pressure and could not be adjusted, so regular inspections and maintenance are needed. The public bath and open-air bath were both very good, but there were issues such as difficulty adjusting faucet flow and a drain cover in the washing area coming loose. The staff in the guest rooms and dining area were polite and helpful. The meals were delicious creative dishes that made great use of Hokkaido ingredients. The Ice Waterfall Festival was wonderful, with seven-color illumination and fireworks. A Shuttle Service bus ran from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM from the Hotel, but it felt strange because the driver did not say a single word during operation (perhaps because most passengers were foreigners?). There was very little greeting or communication from the front desk or staff overall, so the Hotel did not feel lively. Even when checking out and leaving the Hotel, no one said anything to us as we departed Sounkyo Gorge, which left us feeling disappointed.

Could it be a remnant from the era of group travelers?
We are not providing service that matches the price level.

We had a delicious and enjoyable stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed a variety of baths. The meals were buffet-style, but we had fun preparing dishes like steamed clams in sake and Genghis Khan barbecue ourselves, which added a unique touch.

I have visited Hokkaido many times as it is my husband's hometown, but this was my first time visiting Sounkyo, and I was looking forward to it. However, the Japanese-style Room felt like it was stuck in the Showa era. When we were shown to our Room, I thought there might have been a mistake. It was very disappointing. We stayed in the west wing, but the hallways, wallpaper, and carpets were all old and dimly lit. Only the dining area and lobby seemed to be nicely renovated. The bath was average at best, but I had hoped that at least the food would be good. Unfortunately, while there were many options at the buffet, quantity does not equal quality. There wasn’t a single dish that tasted good; it was truly disappointing. Even small details like rubber bands for securing yukata sleeves—something you find almost everywhere these days—were missing here. Overall, it lacked a sense of cleanliness. The futon mattress was so thin that I ended up with a stiff neck the next day. I thought places like this wouldn’t appear on IKYU.com! In hindsight, considering how cheap it was, perhaps it's my fault for choosing this place—but still—I felt bad for disappointing my family as well.

An Amazing Buffet
We reserved the buffet plan for both breakfast and dinner. The menu features local ingredients and offers a wide variety of dishes with generous portions, making it hard to choose. Additionally, drinks such as champagne, wine, and draft beer are available with unlimited refills. There are three bathing areas, including open-air baths and saunas. This accommodation truly reflects a commitment to enhancing guest satisfaction.

Highly rated by families.
The facility has a nostalgic Showa-era feel, as it was built 70 years ago. However, everything else—staff hospitality, creative meals, refreshing highland air, and the introduction to Ainu culture—was excellent. It also received high praise from my accompanying family members. Efforts to attract more visitors and promote the entire region might be necessary. It’s such a hidden gem! But I hope it doesn’t rely solely on overseas guests.

Sound
I stayed in a room with an Onsen, but there was a noise coming from the box next to the air conditioner every few hours. What could this be? It feels disappointing considering the price.

Favorite Hotel
There are three baths, and I used all of them; each had its own charm and was excellent. The meals were delicious with a seasonal touch. I enjoyed the Ainu dance and storytelling at night. The bingo game was also entertaining, making my stay very satisfying, enjoyable, and pleasant. The staff I encountered in the Hotel greeted me with smiles, which I found wonderful. It is a Hotel I would definitely like to visit again.

An accommodation you'll want to visit every season
This was my second visit, and as always, the view from the large public bath was stunning. Being able to enjoy the same scenery from the private open-air bath in the guest room was also wonderful. The amenities were excellent as well. The food was delicious, and I was very satisfied with the attentive yet unobtrusive service provided by the staff member in charge. Although it may have been my misunderstanding, I thought that the coupon given at check-in would be automatically applied at checkout since it was mentioned "at checkout" multiple times. Perhaps saying "You can use it anytime you like" would be clearer. Everything else was so great that this small detail stood out to me. As for international guests, it's a common situation everywhere, so we Japanese just have to accept and adapt for now. This has not affected my overall rating of this stay.

A long-awaited couple's trip with my husband. We had been looking forward to it since making the reservation six months ago. The weather in Sounkyo was unusually nice, and the view of the valley from our room was stunning. Our "Yukibana" room came with an open-air bath, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful scenery while soaking multiple times. Being on a special floor, it was quiet, and even the tatami-lined hallways made for a comfortable stay. The meals were buffet-style, featuring free-flowing delicious wine and plenty of appetizers and dishes that paired perfectly with drinks. Above all, every staff member greeted us with warm smiles and excellent service, making our one-night stay truly enjoyable. We created wonderful memories together as a couple. Thank you very much!

The amenities were abundant and great. The meals had a variety of options and were delicious. I wanted to try everything, but I was too full to eat more! Two disappointing points: 1. I couldn't make a reservation for body scrubbing or massage because it was closed. 2. The tea snacks in the room were so tasty that I wanted to buy them as souvenirs, but they were out of stock at the shop... On the first day of a holiday weekend? Really? These two points were disappointing.

The Room was excellent.
The room had an open-air bath. The size, ambiance, and the quality of the water in the room's open-air bath were excellent. I enjoyed soaking in the room's bath multiple times. The Plan included both dinner and breakfast, which were delicious, but due to my age, I couldn't eat as much as before. It would be nice if there were buffet options or Plans without meals available.

There were many foreign guests, but the staff was doing their best. The location is good, and both the Onsen and meals were excellent. A comfortable hidden Onsen Hotel that combines convenience, modernity, and a blend of old and new.
For a double celebration of my 76-year-old mother and my husband, who both have birthdays in the same month, we visited the historic Sounkyo Onsen "Hotel Taisetsu" in Hokkaido. This was actually our second visit. As it is a milestone year celebrating its 70th anniversary, we once again fully enjoyed its charm! Sounkyo Onsen is the inner sanctum of Kamikawa, revered by the Ainu people as "the land where gods dwell." Originally popular with mountaineers, it has recently gained attention as a resort destination for foreign tourists. We were moved by the pioneering spirit of the predecessors who opened an Onsen Hotel in this undeveloped land 70 years ago. The predecessor of Hotel Taisetsu was a Tyrolean-style hotel built in this area reminiscent of European nature. The warm atmosphere is still intact. Among the three large baths, the most historic indoor bath "Chinita no Yu" retains the atmosphere of a therapeutic bath, with a unique structure where water flows from tiered layers. Wrapped in the rich quality of the spring, you can relax endlessly in the sleeping bath. The other two panoramic baths also offer beautiful skin water that makes your skin smooth, with a view of the great outdoors even on snowy days. Although it was a two-night, three-day stay, the second day was unfortunately a blizzard. However, the spacious interior and enjoyable bath hopping kept us from getting bored! Dinner was at the private room Japanese restaurant "Inankuru." We were amazed by the sophisticated creative kaiseki cuisine using plenty of seasonal Hokkaido ingredients, thinking, "Wow, such fresh seafood in such a remote mountain area!?" However, for dessert, a fully ripe dragon fruit appeared unexpectedly! While being surprised by the unexpected choice, we enjoyed the playful spirit of the chef. The local "Kamikawa Taisetsu" brewery's limited edition sake and the hotel's original collaboration sake were also plentiful. The hospitality of the staff warmed our hearts. The attendant who remembered our previous visit offered a complimentary drink for the celebration, and such subtle attentiveness was very pleasing. After dinner, there were events like a bath stamp rally and bingo tournament, with plenty of activities for couples and families to enjoy! The breakfast and café bread were also exquisite. And the greatest attraction is nature. This area often has highway closures in winter, and on the way back, there was a moment of tension due to the blizzard, but it truly offers a secluded hot spring experience. I definitely want to visit again in another season.

First time at Sounkyo Onsen
It was so clean and comfortable that it didn't feel like a property celebrating its 70th anniversary. The bingo game and other plans were good, but it was a shame they weren't implemented. I thought it would have been better to sell tickets at check-in. Displaying the prizes would also create excitement, wouldn't it? Being told that sales would start at 6:30 PM after entering the room felt a bit inconvenient. The meals were wonderful! I usually don't opt for dinner at local hotels because I have the image of buffets being full of frozen fried foods, but since there were no places to eat nearby, I chose the two-meal plan, and it was the right decision. It was a trip with two female friends, but next time I'll bring my husband along. Thank you for taking care of us. Coming from Okinawa, I was happy to experience snow.

Onsen indulgence
A Long-Awaited Visit to Sounkyo I decided to go because I remembered the buffet being delicious. I was satisfied with the abundance of meat. The staff cleared the used dishes, but it would be nice to have a space where I could place them myself. The onsen was pleasant, but the outdoor bath was too windy and cold to stay in for long, which was unfortunate. I enjoyed the stamp rally at three locations and the gacha, which added to the fun. A 11:00 AM checkout at an onsen property is very appreciated. Since the purpose is to enjoy the onsen, this extra hour is very important. Haha. It's helpful because I can't take a break for sightseeing or therapeutic bathing. I want to visit again.

I make sure to visit at least once a year. The Onsen is fantastic, and above all, I really love the buffet. Next time, I want to do a Multiple Night Stay, so I'm thinking of going again next month.

I used it for the first time. The Kaiseki cuisine was all delicious, with a variety of flavors, and I felt the chef's dedication. I was also satisfied with the Onsen, both in the large public bath and in the guest room. If I may say, I slipped and fell in the washing area of the large public bath and scraped both knees, so it would have been nice to have something to hold onto.

Terrible
The onsen was so-so, the room was so-so, and the food was terrible. Even though it was a buffet, I expected sashimi, sushi, crab, and seafood in Hokkaido, but there was almost none. The buffet venue was overflowing with Chinese guests, ignoring the rules, which was extremely unpleasant. The bath was also uncomfortable due to their inconsiderate behavior. This is a property specialized for Chinese guests. Currently, the property may be thriving with Chinese guests, but Japanese tourists, including myself, will never visit again.

Noise
I stayed in the Japanese-style room Yukihana with an open-air bath. Since traveling in Hokkaido tends to be long and tiring, I chose this place to rest quietly and peacefully. While relaxing in the room after check-in, I heard the sound of children running around from the upper floor, "thud, thud, thud"... It didn't stop for quite a while, so I checked the facility map and found that the large public bath was directly above. I was informed that the property was almost fully booked with over 400 guests on the day of my stay, so the footsteps continued late into the night. My wife had to use earplugs, and I had to sleep with headphones on. I tried to call the front desk via QR code to discuss the noise, but couldn't get through. When I spoke to the staff during dinner, they said, "I think it's the noise from the large public bath. I'll inform the higher-ups," without any sign of surprise, indicating that similar complaints had been made multiple times. Recently, there are many high-priced onsen bath rooms available, and while they might be suitable for those who are not bothered by noise, I don't think they are suitable for those who want to rest quietly. I usually don't write reviews, but since no one had mentioned the noise issue, I decided to write this for future guests.

Unbelievable Front Desk
At the front desk for early check-in with the IKYU Diamond benefits. A considerable number of people were waiting in the lobby for check-in (15:00). The welcome drinks, coffee, and juice were empty. I passed through the lobby several times afterward, and they were always empty. Unbelievable. During the procedure, they didn't even ask for my name, just said check-in is at 3 o'clock. I was puzzled about how the front desk distinguishes between those who arrive early and those who arrive just in time. I was shut out and stunned. When I explained about the Diamond benefits, they suddenly started guiding me from there with an "Ah!" The room had a significant draft, more than just a breeze. In hindsight, I should have asked the hotel to change the room. It felt like a strong wind from a fan. Paying 20,000 yen per person for this small room with a draft was disappointing. The weather was clear, and the view was beautiful, which was a relief. The bath was good, but at the Onsen, which closes at 10:00, I was told at 9:45 that cleaning starts at 10:00, and at 9:58, I was told again that cleaning starts at 10:00, and men will enter. If men need to start cleaning at 10:00, they should close at 9:30. Even at checkout, there was no thank you. The buffet was quite delicious. Everything about this Hotel was concerning, and I won't be repeating my stay. I took the ropeway and lift together. The weather was perfect, which lifted my spirits! It feels a bit pricey, but I highly recommend it. Those who rate it highly might have stayed with a Plan that was a good deal for the price. When four people laid out futons, there was no room to step.

Buffet offers a wide variety, fresh ingredients, and delicious taste!
Since it was a large-scale inn with a buffet, I honestly didn't have high expectations for the meals, but both dinner and breakfast offered a wide variety. Not only local and Ainu cuisine, but also Chinese, Western, and even South American dishes! The vegetables and seafood were fresh, the crab meat came off easily, and above all, it was delicious. There were families with children and groups of foreign tourists, but everyone observed good manners, allowing us to enjoy our meals in a pleasant atmosphere. The large public bath can be enjoyed privately if you choose the right time. The warm service from the staff was also comforting.

Stayed in the West Wing with a semi-open-air bath. The bath in the room was spacious, had a great view, and was excellent. However, I think it might be due to the training of the staff who guided us to the room, but there was no explanation of the room's facilities. They left after placing our luggage, so we weren't informed that there was no telephone (QR code system), and after finishing our meal, the futon was not prepared, which made the stay stressful each time.
