    Third Stay

Once again, we stayed in a Superior Twin Room. The renovation has been done well, and it’s a comfortable, well-balanced Room for a couple in our late 50s. The Onsen is also one of the highlights. That said, the main purpose of our stay at this Ryokan—and the true pleasure of staying here—is the cuisine. On our previous two visits, we chose the “Standard Plan: Seasonal Menu,” and enjoyed exceptionally high-quality kaiseki dining that truly felt like Japanese cuisine at its best—seasonal ingredients presented with superb flavor and craftsmanship that delighted both the palate and the eyes. For our third visit, we decided to splurge on the “Chef’s Choice Special Kaiseki Dinner Plan Featuring Seasonal Ingredients.” The first part (up through the tamatebako and small tray) was as refined as ever, but everything changed from the sashimi course onward. Dish after dish arrived in a rush: whole flatfish sashimi (an entire fish!), Shizuoka-raised wagyu sukiyaki, steamed sea bass in a sake flask style, salt-grilled young ayu, salt-grilled conger eel, miso-glazed eggplant dengaku, eel rice porridge, and more. We could certainly feel their generous hospitality, and everything was delicious—but it was simply far more food than we expected. In our 20s we might have managed to finish it all, but in our late 50s we couldn’t keep up. We were grateful for such fine ingredients but unfortunately had to leave some behind. For this visit only, I would rate dinner 4 stars. I was nervous about breakfast the next morning as well, but it had returned to their usual style—and I was relieved (laugh). Next time I’ll go back to the Standard Plan. If you plan to order the “Chef’s Choice Special Kaiseki,” I recommend coming prepared for an extremely generous portion size.

A regular Accommodation for a stopover on the way home to Osaka.

This was a very comfortable Accommodation, and it felt like a good stopover when driving back to Osaka. However, two things were disappointing. (1) The Onsen bath was great, but it was disappointing that the private bath is not Onsen water. Since this is an Onsen area, I wished something could be done about that. (2) The meal portion size—this was probably a Plan with an added eel dish—but because the eel came later in the course, I was already full by the time it arrived. I had hoped to enjoy eel as the main highlight in Lake Hamana. For guests who want eel, I would like to see a bit more creativity in the menu.

    Everything was wonde...

Everything was wonderful. It would have been nice if there had been water available in the private bath. The appetizers were small portions with many varieties, which I appreciated as my appetite has decreased, but the later courses were quite filling and I couldn’t finish them. I would be happy if there were a smaller-portion menu option. I was surprised at how delicious all the dessert fruits—kiwi, melon, and watermelon—were. We made great memories. Thank you very much.

Excellent meals and a fantastic private bath.

Both breakfast and dinner are delicious. Breakfast is served as a set meal at your table, not a buffet. For families, the private open-air bath is great. It is not an Onsen, though!! You can enjoy the Onsen in the large public bath, so for the first soak, I preferred the private bath with the great view.

    This was my first vi...

This was my first visit. We stayed in a Japanese-Western suite Room. The Room was spacious and had a great view, but it was disappointing that the in-room bath was a small unit bath and not an Onsen. Also, this is a minor point, but the toilet door opens inward, and you have to take off your slippers quite far from the door to be able to open it. Considering guests’ convenience, I think it would be better if it opened toward the hallway or were changed to a sliding door (sorry—I’m an architect). Since this is on the floor with the best Rooms in the Hotel, I would have appreciated a bit more attention to these details. As for the meals, we ordered an eel kaiseki dinner, but as we are an older couple, there was too much food and we couldn’t finish it. In terms of quality as well, I wouldn’t say the main eel dish was particularly good. The croquette containing eel had a fishy smell and was very difficult to eat. I appreciate the effort put into creating the menu, but I feel it would be better to reduce the number of dishes and improve the overall quality.

    Anniversary Trip

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary trip. The Room and the private open-air bath were very clean and comfortable. The view of Lake Hamana from the Room was also wonderful. We traveled with our 1-year-old daughter, and it was great that meals were served in a private room with a baby chair provided. The food was truly delicious, and the portions were very satisfying. They even took a photo for us to commemorate our special day. All the staff members were incredibly kind, and we would love to stay here again when we visit Hamamatsu. Thank you very much!

A historic Ryokan with rooms, services, and meals comparable to a luxury Hotel.

A historic Ryokan located next to Kanzanji, its exterior may appear aged (no offense), which initially made me a bit concerned. However, as soon as I was guided from the lobby to the Room, I was impressed by the cozy remodeled Western-style Room and the stunning view of Lake Hamana. What stood out most was how "everything you need is exactly where you want it." A walk-in closet, suitcase stand, separate sleepwear in addition to yukata, appropriately placed trash bins, a mirror on the desk in addition to one at the sink—everything was thoughtfully arranged. The refrigerator came stocked with free drinks and even coffee-making facilities were provided—services that far exceeded my expectations. Although not mentioned on their website, watching the sunrise over Lake Hamana from right in front of the Ryokan was truly breathtaking—a feature worth highlighting! Dinner consisted of beautifully delicate and delicious dishes. Even though I wasn’t very hungry and canceled rice and miso soup, they kindly delivered dessert to my Room instead. I had an absolutely wonderful time here—thank you so much!

    Accommodation with Stunning Views

I stayed here for the first time last year and had a wonderful experience, so I decided to visit again after a year. The location is perfect with Lake Hamana right in front of you. While the building has an older charm, it is well-maintained and clean. The Japanese-Western style room I stayed in this time was renovated, making it very stylish and beautiful. The hospitality was excellent! As soon as I arrived at the parking lot, a staff member came to assist me with my luggage. Although I arrived slightly earlier than planned, they were flexible and accommodating—thank you for that. The food was absolutely delicious. The portions were just right, allowing me to enjoy everything evenly. Since there didn’t seem to be too many guests overall, I could relax in the Onsen without feeling rushed, and the quiet atmosphere throughout the accommodation was very pleasant. Here are some suggestions for improvement: - The Wi-Fi signal within the facility seemed a bit weak; improving this would be great. - It would be helpful if meal options could accommodate allergies. Although I've mentioned some requests above, overall this accommodation exceeded my expectations! I definitely want to stay here again. Thank you very much!

Had a great stay at the accommodation.

Our family of four stayed here on our way to visit Ise Shrine. The price was similar to accommodations in Ise, but the experience here was overwhelmingly satisfying. - The staff provided very polite and kind service. - When deciding on drinks for dinner during check-in, we were informed that "you are free to enjoy drinks from the refrigerator in your room," allowing us to choose different beverages. - The public bath was comfortable with perfect water temperature. - Although dinner did not feature branded ingredients like Ise lobster or Matsusaka beef, every dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Breakfast also showed great attention to detail. - After giving a small gratuity to the staff who guided us to our room, another staff member expressed their gratitude at checkout, which surprised us pleasantly. Thanks to this wonderful experience, we had a delightful stay! Thank you very much!

    Very satisfied!

The exterior feels old, but the interior is clean. I was pleasantly surprised by the free drinks in the refrigerator in the Room! They were delicious. The food, service, and private bath were all very satisfying. Although the weather wasn't great this time, I imagine the view from the Room on a sunny day would be amazing.

I experienced a touch of the extraordinary.

I treated myself to a solo trip, staying at a lovely accommodation. Since I’m not confident driving, I took the bus from Hamamatsu Station. I arrived earlier than the check-in time due to scheduling, but when I called, they kindly came to pick me up right away, which was incredibly helpful (especially since it was very hot). The building has a historical charm, and upon entering, the refined scent of incense made me feel at ease. The tea served during check-in was also delightful. The staff (including those with "in training" badges) were polite and professional in their demeanor, making my stay very comfortable. The room was spacious and cozy. The plan allowed me to enjoy drinks from the refrigerator and coffee in the room, which added to my relaxation. By choosing specific times for bathing, I could enjoy the open-air bath almost privately. It might have helped that my visit avoided peak busy periods. The meals were luxurious with beautiful presentation and featured many local ingredients that left an impression. The seasoning suited my taste perfectly. Breakfast included many side dishes that paired well with rice; some might want seconds (though I didn’t muster up the courage to ask—it was delicious nonetheless). This accommodation had such a pleasant atmosphere that it made me want to visit again during another season. It felt like a little escape from everyday life—a rewarding trip for myself where I could truly unwind. Thank you for providing such a wonderful experience!

I would love to stay here again!

All categories deserve 5 stars as I was completely satisfied with everything. The meals were excellent, and the staff provided attentive service. The Onsen was very relaxing, and I was impressed by the availability of baby baths and chairs for elderly guests. Although it is a traditional establishment, renovations have been made to keep it clean and beautiful. Thank you for a wonderful trip!

    We chose this accomm...

We chose this accommodation for a trip to show appreciation to our parents. We stayed in a standard Japanese-style room. The view of Lake Hamana was stunning, and the spacious room was very comfortable. The semi-private dining experience was delightful, with unique dishes served one after another. The food was incredibly delicious, and we ended up eating for about two hours despite feeling full! For breakfast, there were no standard items like natto or seaweed, which felt refreshing and everything tasted truly amazing. My husband even had three servings! The onsen was wonderful as well. However, the showerheads were positioned too low, making it slightly challenging to wash my hair. The cypress bath and open-air bath were also very relaxing. If we have another opportunity, we’d love to try staying in a different type of room next time!

The meal portions are overwhelmingly large.

Stay in the top-floor suite Japanese-style room with a special Kaiseki course selected by the head chef. The building feels reminiscent of the bubble era, and the room is just spacious without much character. It would be better to add some unique features, such as an open-air bath. As for the food, to be honest, it feels like a waste of ingredients. With that amount served, only someone with extraordinary capacity could finish it all. We would prefer more focus on quality over quantity.

    Accommodation with Excellent Cuisine

I thought it was an old accommodation, but the tatami mats had just been replaced, and the fresh scent of tatami from the hallway was delightful. The meals were not only abundant in variety but also tasted excellent. The presentation was Instagram-worthy, and I got so absorbed in taking photos that I kept the server waiting. It was a bit disappointing that the large public bath did not have alternating times for men and women. The service was polite and attentive, leaving me very satisfied. Thank you!

    A Relaxing and Unpretentious Accommodation

A cozy accommodation with a stunning view of Lake Hamana right in front. As the oldest accommodation in Kanzanji Onsen, while the exterior shows its age, parts of the interior have been renovated for a comfortable stay. We stayed in a renovated Superior Twin Room with a serene Japanese-modern design that perfectly matched the photos. The room included complimentary drinks as part of the Accommodation Fee, had Bluetooth speakers installed, and even featured tea incense for relaxation. The meals were gentle in flavor and primarily seafood-based courses, offering satisfying content overall. The staff maintained an appropriate distance while serving, making it a pleasant experience. Personally, I found breakfast slightly lacking; adding egg dishes would enhance satisfaction further. Overall, it was an excellent accommodation!

    I had a relaxing stay.

We chose this place because of its highly-rated meals. The dishes were not only delicious but also beautifully presented, satisfying both the palate and the eyes. The private dining room offered a sense of privacy, allowing us to enjoy our meal at a relaxed pace. While the building is not new, it offers stunning views of Lake Hamana right in front of you. Both the Room and facilities were clean and comfortable, making our stay pleasant. The staff provided attentive service, leaving us completely satisfied.

Satisfied with the location and meals

The location and scenery were excellent, being close to Kanzanji and the Onsen town. The meals were carefully prepared, with just the right amount and very delicious. However, many of the Facility and services followed traditional methods, and I thought it could become a wonderful Ryokan if improvements are made in the future. Thank you very much.

    Very satisfied.

This Property offers a stunning view of Lake Hamana. The interior design of the Room is a blend of Japanese and Western styles, with indirect lighting creating a warm atmosphere. You can also enjoy the view of Lake Hamana while lying on the bed. The kaiseki cuisine served is excellent, with great taste and creative presentation, making it a luxurious experience. Additionally, the private bath can be reserved for free, which was greatly appreciated.

    It was the best stay.

It was said to be the oldest established Ryokan in Kanzanji Onsen, but the rooms have been beautifully renovated and were wonderful. As I get older, staying on tatami mats is a bit of a struggle, but with a bed and sofa, I was able to stay comfortably. The large public bath and private open-air bath were also excellent. Additionally, the meals were elaborate, with each dish carefully prepared, and the portions were more than sufficient. Thank you for allowing me to have a relaxing stay.

    The food was delicious.

The rooms were very clean, and the food was delicious, but considering the building is old, I think it's difficult to rely solely on traditional hospitality nowadays. It seems that having items like Dyson or NanoCare, at least Ionity-class hair dryers, Nespresso machines, vending machines within the facility, and free drink spaces are becoming a must even for a Ryokan. Since you have a wonderful view and cuisine, I wrote this with the hope that you will strive together with the entire region.

    Musty smell

The Western-style room had a musty smell, and I couldn't sleep. Everywhere with carpets, such as the hallway, elevator, and Western-style room, has a musty smell. I think it would be better to change all the carpets. It's a shame because the Room itself is not bad. The meals are not bad either, but the staff makes a lot of noise, so I think it would be better if they were a bit more careful.

    Delicious Hamana Lake Trip

Three people greeted us at the parking lot. I told my name to two of them. At check-in, we were offered tea. Snacks are placed in the room. Being guided to the room is becoming rare these days, but I was informed by a trainee staff member. It felt nice to see them trying hard! The building is a bit old, with a men's urinal in the toilet. There was mold around the sink in the toilet, and another spot visible when sitting on the toilet. It bothered me, but everything else was clean. The private bath, which is not an Onsen, is free and offers a nice view, which is delightful. For meals, you order drinks at check-in, so you won't be asked later, which is nice. The portions are quite large, with many dishes, and there are two eel dishes, which is pleasing. When there are few people in the bath, you can relax. The view from the open-air bath is almost nonexistent. From the private bath, although through a net, it's nice. I can't go often, but I would like to use it again when I visit Kanzanji Onsen at Lake Hamana.

    I was healed.

As you enter the lobby, you are greeted by the stunning view of the lake's surface, creating an impression as if it seamlessly extends from the Hotel. Many have written in the Review that the meals are delicious, and indeed, they were truly satisfying. We enjoyed our meals in a spacious private room, with not only great taste but also visually delightful presentations. For three housewives on a reward trip, it was a brief escape from household chores, rejuvenated by delicious meals and hospitality. This is a Property you would want to recommend to someone special. I would love to visit again in a different season.
