    Trouble in the Large Public Bath

    I booked this Ryokan because it was described as one of IKYU’s top-tier luxury properties, and it was even featured in the Michelin guide—so my expectations were high. I was shocked by the gap between its reputation and reality. First, the building felt damp. Even as I thought, “Seriously?”, the tatami mats in the hallway to the Room were wrinkled and worn. And yes—my bad feeling was right when I entered: the tatami in the Room actually sank underfoot, which felt unpleasant. Since it’s a renovated annex-style Ryokan, I could understand some wear and tear to a certain extent. Before dinner, I went to their proud open-air bath—but there was only enough water for a footbath. Apparently a pipe hadn’t been secured properly. Please check these things before check-in!! As for the food: it was creative kaiseki that showed the head chef’s skill, and the sashimi was delicious. Overall, at this price point I would not consider returning. IKYU should reconsider its rating criteria. That said, one saving grace: at checkout, a young female staff member waved to us until our car disappeared from view.

    I stayed here with my sister and her husband while it was snowing heavily. The Accommodation has both a first and second floor, making it a Room layout I had never experienced before. The in-Room bath had plenty of hot water flowing continuously, which was perfect for a morning soak. The meals were also very delicious.

    A tranquil Ryokan with a beautiful garden

    It was our first time, but this Ryokan, located in a quiet residential area with only 9 rooms, offered a relaxing stay. Originally said to be a retreat for a bank in Kobe, the lobby, garden, and front desk retained traces of its history, creating a calm and serene atmosphere. At check-in, we asked about the private Onsen and were able to reserve it immediately. We enjoyed it together as a couple. In the morning, my wife used the open-air bath in our room while I went to the public bath. Though not very spacious, it had an open-air bath which was nice. The room was clean and comfortable with beds where we slept soundly. However, since there was only a low table on tatami mats for seating, it became uncomfortable for my knees; I would have preferred chairs and tables (I’ve seen other Ryokans use extendable legs under tables). There wasn’t a coffee maker in the room but coffee could be made at the lobby which worked well enough. We were told meals could be served in-room but opted for private dining due to knee discomfort. Dinner was delicious overall though slightly lacking impact; the main dish—a single slice of Wagyu beef cutlet—felt insufficient. My wife appreciated that everything was beautifully presented as she has a smaller appetite. Breakfast included many dishes; we especially enjoyed starting with porridge (the Ishikawa Koshihikari rice was also excellent) and found the large bowl of chawanmushi particularly delightful. The attendant who looked after us during our stay shared interesting stories and helpful tips—when we mentioned wanting fresh fish before leaving they consulted with their chef who recommended shops at Hashidate Fishing Port. As we prefer smaller Ryokans with around 10 rooms over larger ones—this place perfectly matched our preferences: from its Onsen facilities to cuisine quality/service level/garden design/building layout/atmosphere like that seen within its cozy lobby areas etc., everything aligned wonderfully! We hope someday soon another opportunity arises allowing us return again!

    This Ryokan faced challenges in continuing its operations.

    We stayed in a special room to celebrate his birthday, but everything was disappointing. The Room had a view of the garden on two sides, but the garden was overgrown with weeds and untrimmed trees, creating a desolate and neglected atmosphere. Is this garden supposed to be a highlight? Please take another look. It’s not something you can proudly show to guests. The walking path in the garden is fully visible from the second floor and lounge area, so we gave up going outside. Not that it’s worth stepping into anyway. The private open-air Onsen attached to our Room was small and filled with insects. Looking out of the window, it seemed like people from residential houses across the narrow road could see us bathing. This requires more consideration—on your part as a Ryokan. What we were most looking forward to was the meal mentioned in Reviews, but it turned out to be fried dishes smelling of reused old oil and creative cuisine with strange odors. The main beef cutlet dish was about 2cm in diameter—overcooked and reeking so much of old oil that it became unclear whether it was meat or fish. Since it was his birthday celebration, we chose an anniversary course that included a bottle of champagne as part of our Reservation. However, when serving champagne, the staff couldn’t open it themselves and made him do so instead. Perhaps you should discontinue this champagne service? After all, it's included in your pricing. Later on, we received Wajima lacquer chopsticks as a gesture; however, they were handed over with comments like “These are just ordinary items found anywhere.” If this is meant as humility—it’s better avoided altogether. The only redeeming points were some sashimi served as palate cleansers and rice made from Ishikawa-grown Koshihikari rice which tasted good. Also appreciated were well-stocked towels provided during our stay. Other than these minor positives? Nothing else stood out positively at all—not even what they call "semi-open-air baths." This isn’t really an Onsen Ryokan—it feels more like staying at someone’s rural family home instead! For those seeking relaxation at an authentic Onsen Ryokan elsewhere would be better suited for their needs here! I will never return again; I feel deeply sorry towards him for such disappointment ruining what should have been special celebrations together! Despite high ratings seen online through platforms such as IKYU.com Reviews—I wonder why? Our Room had peeling wallpaper patched up using duct tape—is this truly deserving according IKYU standards?! Please reevaluate thoroughly once again!

    Some parts of the facility felt a bit outdated, but the room was spacious and allowed for a relaxing stay. The meals were very delicious.

    This was my first stay, and overall, I am very satisfied. The best part was the food; combined with the atmosphere of the dining area, it was extremely delicious. The Onsen in the room was a bit hot, but when I contacted them, they adjusted the temperature for me. I had a quiet and relaxing stay. I would love to stay again if I have the chance.

    Solo Trip to Kanazawa

    If you're visiting Kanazawa, you might want to enjoy an Onsen as well. I chose this accommodation because of its delicious meals and relaxing atmosphere (I prefer a Japanese-Western style room). The shuttle service from the nearest station was also a deciding factor. I opted for a spacious room even though I was staying alone, which allowed me to relax comfortably. The room had a semi-open-air bath with free-flowing hot spring water (you can open the window), which was amazing. Being able to soak in it anytime I wanted was definitely a highlight. There were also private baths available, and I tried one of those too—it was spacious, had the perfect temperature, and was simply wonderful. During dinner time, I noticed a beautiful red sunset from my room. However, since my room was on the first floor and partially obscured by trees, it wasn’t fully visible. A staff member kindly suggested that we could see it better from the second floor and took me there. Watching the vivid red sunset together from the hallway upstairs made for an unforgettable moment. Meals were served in-room and every dish tasted fantastic. It had been quite some time since I'd experienced in-room dining, so not having to move around added extra comfort. The staff were excellent—quick to respond and very attentive—no complaints at all! That said, there were minor issues: the noise from the ventilation fan in my room bothered me slightly; there were cobwebs in the toilet; and long black hair on the floor (I have short blonde hair). While these details could be improved for cleanliness, everything else—including their lovely garden—was clean enough for me to fully enjoy my stay. On my way back to the station via another route lined with blooming satsuki azaleas on both sides of a long path—it felt like such eye candy! Unfortunately, this scenic route wasn’t part of our journey when arriving at check-in. Thank you so much for your hospitality! It truly was an enjoyable stay with great Onsen experiences!

    I enjoyed reading while soaking my feet in the footbath. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. I was able to relax and rest well.

    Buvons du Champagne

    We visit every year.

    I have been visiting during the ski season in January or February for about 15 years. Along the way, I visited the sister inn Tagawa Ryusenkaku twice, but I always feel most at ease at Manyo. I have tried various Rooms (each with different baths, so I never get bored) and have experienced the unique charm of each one as they have been renovated over the years. The head chef has changed several times, but the food has always been delicious, and noticing the subtle changes and preferences has been enjoyable. In recent years, more Japanese restaurants have started pairing wine with their cuisine, but in the past, it was a rare luxury to bring wine to pair with the seasonal local dishes—especially after a relaxing soak in the Onsen! Every year, I find myself thinking, "If I were to die, now would be the perfect time" (laughs) as I enjoy these blissful moments. The attendants assigned to the Room have always been pleasant, and even after the retirement of the person who had been taking care of us for many years, the service has remained excellent. I look forward to your continued hospitality and hope to visit during a different season as well.

    I am satisfied with the hospitality.

    For the first time during the New Year, we stayed with three generations of our family. My father in his 90s appreciated the tatami-floored interior that didn't require slippers and the Room bath facing the garden. The content and taste of the cuisine were exceptional. It was satisfying for all generations. The service from the staff and front desk was attentive, allowing us to spend a peaceful New Year. We hope to visit again on another occasion.

    The lobby was clean ...

    The lobby was clean and as expected, but the tatami in the Room was partially bumpy. The food was ordinary except for the delicious persimmon appetizer. It's a matter of preference, but the outdoor bath in the bathing area was lukewarm and cold, while the indoor bath was too hot. It was quite noticeable that a maid with difficulty walking was muttering complaints while walking, and someone was talking loudly in front of the front desk between 8 and 9 PM, possibly because they didn't know guests were nearby. It's none of my business, but I think they should consider employment. This is my opinion as a guest.

    The luxurious facility exudes a sense of elegance and was originally a retreat for a second-tier regional bank, renovated from the president's villa. The garden is spacious, and while we enjoyed the beautiful autumn leaves this time, I believe the winter snow scenery will be delightful. The rooms are all spacious, and each room has an onsen, allowing you to warm up quickly when it gets cold. Being an onsen, the water is always at the perfect temperature, creating a luxurious atmosphere. There is apparently one room without an onsen, but it comes with other perks, making it recommended for those not particularly interested in baths. There are also private baths and a large public bath, and the interior seems to have been recently renovated, as the walls and such were very clean. If I may say one thing, the showerheads felt reminiscent of the Showa era, and I sensed a level of wear not often seen in the homes of those staying at a property of this class. In an era where a showerhead that ranks third in Kakaku.com's satisfaction ranking costs less than 3,000 yen, replacing the estimated 20-25 heads in the large public bath, private baths, and each room could reduce water usage and further increase satisfaction among women. Since the plumbing was by TOTO, it seemed possible to replace the heads oneself. Next to the large public bath, there is a private room where you can relax after a bath, with free drinks and even handmade warabi mochi, providing a thoroughly satisfying experience. It was delicious. In case this area is crowded, there is another room where you can enjoy music while having tea (coffee). The meals were also wonderful, featuring fresh and delicious seafood that evoked the atmosphere of Ishikawa. The meals alone were very satisfying, and it was great to have such a well-maintained facility. The proprietress was courteous and seemed very approachable, showing consideration from start to finish (including the senior proprietress). It was a luxurious facility filled with elements that would particularly impress older guests. I would like to use it again.

    It was very good.

    There was a warm welcome, and the option for in-room dining was excellent. It was great that the room also had a bath. The room was also clean and well-maintained. I felt like there were a lot of citrus dishes, which made me crave fresh fruits.

    It became the best memory.

    I stayed with my mother and aunt. Before entering the room, we were served matcha, which was very delicious. The garden visible from the lobby was also well-maintained and beautiful. The room was spacious, and the bathroom had a large bath with a view of the garden. The amenities were good and had a sense of cleanliness, which was nice. The attendant who served us was elderly but provided attentive care and enjoyable service, making us feel very comfortable. The food was truly delicious, and the portions were large, leaving us very satisfied. The breakfast was impeccable in both taste and variety. Since both my mother and aunt are in their mid-80s, there may not be many more opportunities for them to travel, but I believe it became a good memory. Both of them were very pleased. Thank you very much.
