    Extremely disappointing!

    Truly a treasure hunt on the riverbed! Dig into the gravel with a shovel and Onsen water springs up everywhere! Even if the source is too hot, you can cool it by letting in river water and create your own “My open-air bath.” Yuamigi (bathing wear) is also available for rent, so women can enjoy the open-air bath with peace of mind. A winter specialty, when the river level drops, is the large open-air bath called “Sennin-buro,” made by damming the river. Steam rises from the surface—an open-air bath wonderland! ...Inspired by descriptions like these from various Onsen writers, I visited with high hopes—but it was extremely disappointing. They said, “It rained last night, so the river level rose and the water temperature dropped,” but there was no steam on the river at all. Everyone in Sennin-buro was shivering from cold and couldn’t bring themselves to get out. No one was digging their own “My open-air bath,” and I ended up returning to my Accommodation while trembling. Some people coming back from Sennin-buro even advised me, “We can’t recommend bathing.” I want to urge those Onsen writers who omit key details and only emphasize dreamy content—leaving readers disappointed—to seriously reflect on what they publish. As for Ryokan “Fujiya,” I chose it because (1) it’s close to Sennin-buro and (2) I’d heard that the riverside in front of the Accommodation has the most hot spring flow. I didn’t have high expectations from the start—but it really was a terrible place. The rooms were old; cleanliness (housekeeping) was inadequate; amenities were poor; and for the first time ever, my futon had already been laid out when I entered. The front desk was staffed by a foreign employee who did not understand Japanese well. They gave me a manual-style explanation, but could hardly answer any questions. So what about renting shovels or yuamigi? It was simply not workable. That said, the quality of the Onsen water in their baths was excellent. Unfortunately, however, faucets were rusty and cleaning did not seem thorough, so I have no choice but to rate it a “3.” The food quality was awful—I didn’t even feel like ordering drinks at dinner. Overall satisfaction: there are no positives other than the Onsen water quality in the baths! In general, I don’t think this is an Accommodation I can recommend. If you visit Kawayu Onsen, it may be better suited to enjoying summer activities such as camping and playing in/around the river.

    Delicious meals and ...

    Delicious meals and warm hospitality, excellent location and views. Shuttle service to Kumano Kodo. It was a very fulfilling and wonderful trip.

    Sennin Buro is the best!

    I wanted to experience the Sennin Buro, so I stayed at Fujiya, a nearby property. It was a cold day with snowflakes dancing in the air, and although it was chilly before entering, once I bathed, I warmed up to the core and had no issues on my way back. The indoor bath was also clean and spacious, providing a pleasant experience. The meals were more luxurious than expected and very satisfying. It was a property I'd like to use again. Thank you very much.
