    The Ryokan building ...

    The Ryokan building stands quietly near the entrance to Kamome Island. Surrounded by a fence, it has such an understated exterior that you might walk right past it if you didn’t know it was there. Step inside, however, and the impression changes completely. Multiple guest rooms are skillfully arranged within a limited site, creating a design that balances privacy with a sense of openness—truly impressive. The guest rooms strike an excellent balance between functionality and comfort, and the Onsen water quality is outstanding; overall, the Facility and amenities are very well maintained. What left the strongest impression at this Accommodation was the dining. Japanese cuisine featuring local ingredients from Esashi was served, and it was so refined that I felt it would be worth visiting for the meals alone. The only point of concern was the door leading from the room to the garden. It appeared to be a custom-made item rather than domestically produced, but it required some technique to open and close and took quite a bit of time. The architecture, Onsen, cuisine, and staff service were all of a high standard. Esashi isn’t somewhere you can visit on a whim, but that is exactly why this is an Accommodation worth going out of your way for—one that can be regarded as among Hokkaido’s standout places to stay.

    My first visit to Esashi through the hometown tax donation program. A stylish, modern property along the coast. It was a bit disappointing that the TV was small and the Wi-Fi was weak, but everything else was flawless. First of all, both dinner and breakfast were outstanding. Dinner featured mainly local ingredients—salmon roe, sea urchin, abalone, and snow crab—and to top it off, we could also enjoy lamb raised on their own farm. The herring in particular was delicious! Drinks were unlimited refills except for a few items. Breakfast was also perfectly portioned and very tasty. I felt the head chef is truly exceptional. When we left, someone who seemed to be the owner came out of their way to see us off; it was a kind and warm Ryokan until the very end. A place that definitely makes you want to come back again.

    I extended my trip f...

    I extended my trip from Hakodate and stayed for one night. It takes about two hours by bus from Hakodate, with only a few buses per day, so Esashi is not easy to access, but there were sightseeing spots nearby such as Kamome Island. The Room and the entire Facility were spacious, the bath was large, and the hot spring was free-flowing directly from the source. The locally sourced meals felt like a great value, with sea urchin and crab (apparently red snow crab can be caught until August). It was also nice that alcohol at dinner was included in the price. I had heard that you could order alcohol via room service, but that seems to have ended and there was no 안내내 about it; even so, I think it offers great value for money that’s unique to Hokkaido.

    Make the trip—it's worth it!

    The cuisine was outstanding and truly moving. Each dish reflected careful selection of fresh local ingredients and meticulous preparation. Given the location, I expected excellent seafood, but the vegetables were beyond anything I imagined. This Accommodation is well worth going out of your way for.

    A Gourmet All-Inclusive Accommodation

    I was able to relax and enjoy some peaceful time on my own at this lovely Accommodation in a fishing town. Soaking in the bath in my Room and enjoying a draft beer from room service was pure bliss. Above all, the food was delicious! Both dinner and breakfast were wonderful, featuring plenty of local specialties. I was also happy that the free-drink menu included Okushiri wine! All of the staff were very pleasant. At checkout, I even had the chance to be greeted by the owner, which made for a truly wonderful stay. I’ll be back again—thank you for taking such good care of me.

    The finest dining, a relaxing space, and an Onsen

    I stayed for one night from Friday. With only seven groups staying, it feels very private. Rather than a Hotel, it feels like seven standalone houses connected together. Because the Rooms are slightly separated even though they’re connected, there was no noise at all, and I didn’t run into other guests whatsoever. Dinner and breakfast were also served in private rooms, which added to the sense of privacy. There’s truly nothing around the area, so it’s quiet both day and night. I took my time to relax and unwind in the Onsen, which is available 24 hours a day—it warmed both my body and mind. Since it’s an Onsen, I thought an open-air bath might be nice, but I was more than satisfied with the indoor bath as well. The dinner and breakfast featured local ingredients, with vegetables and meat that are homegrown/house-made as well. The seasoning brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients. Everything was delicious. The staff were calm and mature, which made me feel at ease. I’d love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    We were able to relax at a very leisurely pace!

    This was my first stay here. All of the staff were extremely courteous, and I was able to relax and unwind. The calm, thoughtfully designed atmosphere made time feel like it flowed gently, and it was truly soothing. The Room’s private free-flowing hot spring bath was wonderful, and being able to enjoy it as many times as I liked—at night and again in the morning—was especially great. As for dinner, which I had been looking forward to most, everything from the very first dish was delicious. The crab, sea urchin, flounder sashimi, abalone, and whelk sashimi were outstanding. In the morning, the freshly cooked rice was excellent as well—I even finished a bowl of rice with egg in no time. The owner also saw us off at the end of our stay, making this a truly heartwarming trip. I will definitely come again.

    Thank you for a wonderful stay.

    The Room was spacious, and the Facility, amenities, meals, and service were all excellent. The meals featured seasonal ingredients and were served perfectly. However, since it is a fully private suite and everything can be completed within your own Room, I wished there were easy-to-use shared spaces such as a lounge or a large public bath. There was no interaction at all with other guests, so I had no sense of what kind of people were staying there. Also, perhaps due to Golden Week pricing or being geared toward inbound travelers, I felt the value for money was slightly questionable.

    This was our fourth ...

    This was our fourth visit in four years (I think?), and each time we’re able to relive the excitement we felt on our very first stay—thanks to everyone’s heartfelt hospitality. We truly felt your wish for guests to relax in comfort and enjoy delicious food (the perfectly hot, exquisite dashi soup bowl, in particular—and both dinner and breakfast were outstanding). This time, I also read one of the books in the Room, which helped me learn more about Esashi’s history, how Tabiniwa Gunrai came to be, and the owner’s thoughts. It made me understand even more clearly why staying here moves us so deeply. On our way home, we stopped by Kamome Island and saw the crystal-clear water full of fish (I took photos, but what kind of fish are they?), the rocks from the Orii legend, traces of Kitamaebune moorings, and remnants of banquet sites at Senjojiki. Having read about them beforehand made it even more fascinating. Esashi really has so much to see. From Hakodate it’s a bit of a detour, but we recommend taking the coastal route while hopping between roadside stations—stopping along the way at Cape Shirakami at Hokkaido’s southernmost tip (spectacular views) and Matsumae Castle—then heading on to Esashi and Tabiniwa Gunrai. This is an Accommodation we’d love to visit again and again!

    It was a wonderful stay.

    This was my second visit. When I came by bus from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, the staff kindly picked me up at the bus stop. The ride from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station also felt very quick. It was a snowy winter with a cold wind, but the building blended in beautifully with the town’s atmosphere, which I felt was part of its charm at this time of year. Breakfast and dinner were both excellent—every single dish, from the ingredients to the seasoning, was wonderful. After a delicious meal, I enjoyed the Onsen to my heart’s content and was able to truly relax. I’ve come to love Esashi as well. I will visit again. Thank you very much.

    Highly recommended.

    This was an accommodation I had always wanted to visit. For me, everything was perfect—the quality of the onsen water, the room's decor, the meals, the amenities, the soaps, the quality and number of bath towels, and above all, the kindness of the staff. While this price is not something I can easily afford, it felt like an exceptional value for such high quality. It was a truly wonderful accommodation.

    I stayed here as my main purpose and rented a car in Hakodate to visit Esashi. From various photos, I had high expectations, but the accommodation exceeded them beyond imagination. The modern architecture that suddenly appeared in the quaint town of Esashi excited me even before stepping out of the car. The room featured a serene interior design reminiscent of "wabi-sabi." It seemed like reclaimed materials were used—old wood and tatami integrated into the modern architecture—evoking a sense of connection to the land's history. The door leading to a terrace resembling a tea room and the minimalist garden paved with round stones created an isolated yet beautiful atmosphere from the outside world. It was truly a garden you could gaze at endlessly. There was an exquisite harmony between newness and antiquity, tension and relaxation—a coexistence that felt incredibly comfortable. The sunset and pre-dawn sky viewed from the terrace were breathtakingly beautiful. Shortly after arriving, I unfortunately fell ill with stomach issues, which prevented me from enjoying most of the meals I had been looking forward to—a regretful experience for me. My apologies go out to those who prepared such wonderful dishes as well as all staff members involved. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude along with my sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. A female staff member (possibly the manager) kindly arranged meals in my room during this time; her kindness left an unforgettable impression on me—not only her wonderful personality but also her heartfelt hospitality stood out remarkably. Thank you very much for everything! I realized that what makes this facility truly special is its people. I will definitely visit again!

    The dinner was excellent, but...

    Dinner was undeniably delicious. However, breakfast was disappointing; despite the claim of being from their own farm, the salad consisted only of shredded cabbage and a single tomato. Considering it was June, I expected fresh options like mizuna, baby leaves, or snap peas to be available. The concept seems to focus on an extraordinary experience, but being surrounded by high concrete walls along the Esashi coastline felt more isolating than relaxing. The garden had no greenery—just stones—which gave an impression more akin to a prison or desolate landscape rather than a serene retreat. A single tree in the minimalist design could have added modern beauty but sadly wasn’t there. The Room wear from a designer brand was heavy and uncomfortable in both material and design; I ended up taking it off quickly. For over 100,000 yen per night for two people with dinner and breakfast included, it felt significantly overpriced.

    The meals were absolutely delicious.

    This was my first stay at this accommodation. The room was very spacious and clean, with an onsen attached, which was amazing! There were even two air conditioners, making it very comfortable to stay on a hot day. As for the meals, I mentioned that I am not fond of raw food, and they kindly steamed the sashimi for me. Even with my picky eating habits, I was able to enjoy every dish—it was truly delicious! This is the first time I've been able to eat all the dishes in a kaiseki meal. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive. This is an accommodation I would absolutely love to stay at again. Thank you so much!

    For the Best Memories with Your Mother

    I visited with my mother. I often go on luxury hotel tours with him, and it's always a joyful and fulfilling time. While planning a trip to Hakodate, I recommended this accommodation to my mother and made the reservation at Kurumai. There didn’t seem to be any luxury hotels in Hakodate City, but during my research, I was surprised to find such a luxurious hotel in an unexpected location. The reviews looked very promising. The meals seemed incredibly delicious, and I saw reviews saying it’s "a hotel worth visiting just for the stay." Believing that my mother would love it too, I made the reservation. The result was an extremely satisfying experience, and my mother was delighted! What moved us most was learning about how this hotel came to be built. During dinner when they brought out our dishes, they shared various background stories about the owner’s vision as well as efforts by the then-mayor and staff members—it deeply touched us both; my mother even shed tears of emotion. (They mentioned intentionally keeping pre-visit information minimal so guests could fully experience the surprise upon arrival—be sure to ask about it when you visit!) At this accommodation, you can enjoy vegetables lovingly grown on a farm operated solely for this hotel by its owner, along with lamb meat or eggs from chickens raised there—it became such a memorable and wonderful experience for us! Needless to say, every dish was intricately prepared and absolutely delicious; among nearly 10 luxury accommodations I've visited so far—this became one of my favorite dining experiences! The entire story moved me so much that I shared it with friends on Instagram as well. As for sightseeing spots nearby: Goryokaku Fort or Kaiyomaru Ship Museum (connected historically through Edo Shogunate) are just around 3 minutes’ walk away; after watching historical explanation videos there one day—we visited Goryokaku next morning which enhanced understanding & enjoyment greatly! Similarly located within walking distance (~3 mins), Inishie Kaido Street also impressed us despite heavy rain limiting exploration—but renovated warehouse cafes etc., added charm nonetheless. Thank you very much once again! If given another chance someday—I’d love returning here wholeheartedly while continuing cheering/supporting your endeavors ahead too!

    岩海苔に魅せられた旅人

    Especially, the meals are excellent!!

    With a limited number of rooms, it offers a serene and relaxing space where you rarely encounter other guests. Previously, due to my schedule, only my family stayed here without me, but they said the meals were the best among all accommodations they had ever stayed at, so I decided to visit this time. This time during Golden Week, our sons were traveling separately, so it ended up being just my spouse and me. The room is bright and perfect for relaxing with a book. The dressing area is equipped with floor heating for added comfort, and each room has its own onsen with free-flowing hot spring water for an elegant relaxation experience. As expected from my family's high praise beforehand, the meals were absolutely delicious! My spouse is vegetarian, but they fully accommodated her dietary needs with carefully prepared dishes. We would love to visit again in another season!

    Couple of Sainokuni

    Traveled to Esashi, a place not easily reached, by rental car from Otaru. The accommodation was simple yet modest, with a clear concept and philosophy that left me very satisfied. It would have been even more fulfilling if the staff had shared insights about the charm of local Esashi as part of their hospitality.

    It was very nice and relaxing.

    I liked the calm atmosphere with a black theme. The Room and garden were spacious, and you could slightly see the port of Esashi. Next time, I want to come in summer, go out to the garden, and enjoy a beer while cooling off. Drinks were all-inclusive, so I enjoyed various drinks while lounging in the Room. The meals were satisfying with seafood and mountain delicacies. Even though the price is high-end, it was justified by the substantial content. I recommend it.

    A hospitable inn

    Ever since I saw it recommended on Ikkyu, I had been longing to visit, and it was a much-anticipated stay. When traveling in Southern Hokkaido, one tends to focus on Hakodate, and there aren't many opportunities to visit the Sea of Japan side like Esashi or Matsumae, but it's definitely worth going. The architecture is modern and stylish, yet it blends into the town of Esashi, giving you a nostalgic feeling. You can endlessly gaze at the sunset over the stone garden from the terrace with a drink in hand. A walk around Kamome Island before breakfast is also recommended. The food is not only delicious but also conveys a sense of hospitality. As many people have mentioned in their reviews, the service is very pleasant. Knowing the background of how this inn was established makes the experience even more profound. Next time, I want to see the winter Sea of Japan from Kurumai.
