    Even better on your third stay

    This was our third stay—before COVID, during the pandemic, and now. My husband and I visit an Onsen somewhere in Japan every other month, but whenever we stay elsewhere, we always end up comparing it to this place. This time we debated staying two nights; we spent the first night in Yumura and the second night here, but I truly regret not staying here for both nights. The Room attendant who looked after us last time was exceptionally hospitable, and we were delighted to see them again—thanks to them, we had a wonderful time. While the Accommodation shows some signs of age, it seems they have been making thoughtful improvements throughout, and many areas felt more convenient than on our previous visit. You can also enjoy the top-floor lounge at their adjacent group Hotel and book a specially blended aromatherapy massage in the massage room. It rained nonstop during our stay, but on a rainy day it was incredibly relaxing to switch off—no TV—just lounging together on the sofa. In my experience, I have never found an in-room open-air bath better than this one. We’re already discussing when to make our next Reservation on the way home. Thank you for the delicious new rice and all your considerate touches—we can’t wait to return. It’s a wonderfully quiet place where adults can truly unwind. Highly recommended for anyone feeling stressed or worn out.

    Ujo Soan on a Rainy Day

    From arrival to departure, the staff treated us with great care, and we had a very pleasant stay. The service was impeccable. The Room retains the charm of a traditional Japanese house while offering a calm, spacious layout for relaxing. In addition to the deck, there is also an area with a sofa where you can sit and take in the outdoor scenery at your leisure, which made it easy to unwind. Unfortunately, it rained quite heavily during our stay, so we couldn’t enjoy the deck as much as we had hoped. The Onsen was also wonderful—you can soak in free-flowing natural hot spring water whenever you like. The bathtub was spacious enough to relax and fully enjoy the Onsen. There is a separate shower room in front of the bathing area as well, which made it convenient to wash before getting into the tub. What left the strongest impression on us in particular was the cuisine. Fresh seafood was used generously, and every dish was absolutely delicious. Although we weren’t blessed with good weather this time and couldn’t see the sunset we had been looking forward to, we still thoroughly enjoyed simply spending time at this Accommodation. Being able to relax so comfortably even on a rainy day may be something unique to Ujo Soan. We were highly satisfied with everything—service, Room, Onsen, and meals—and it’s an Accommodation we would love to visit again.

    Next time, during the rainy season or when the fresh greenery is at its best.

    Due to bad weather, we changed our travel destination and ended up staying here at short notice as a family of five. Everyone except the person who made the Reservation wasn’t very enthusiastic until we arrived, but our stay here won them over and they were extremely satisfied. We felt truly relaxed by the meals, the atmosphere of the Room, and the hospitality. Personally, I was thrilled to find several types of Isamu Noguchi lighting in the traditional Japanese house-style Room. Next time, I’d love to spend time here during the rainy season or when the fresh greenery is at its best.

    The hospitality is impeccable.

    I’m truly impressed by the attendants. The meals and the Room were wonderful, but the hospitality was perfect. This is a genuinely pleasant and comfortable Accommodation. This was our second stay, and compared to last time, the meals, the Room, and the service were all even better. They even placed chopsticks with consideration for my left-handed daughter, and provided smaller geta sandals for my petite daughter. As a woman, there was so much I could learn from them. I’m looking forward to coming next time with my husband.

    Highly satisfied

    I stay here five or six times a year, and even if it’s a bit pricey, the service is well worth the cost—I’m completely satisfied. Whenever I come to this area, I’ll only stay at Ujosoan. When I come here, it truly feels like coming home.

    The Miracle of Fireflies

    We visited again in a different season. What truly makes it feel like coming home is the warmth of the people. Even though you were handling almost everything on your own, your genuinely heartfelt hospitality really leaves an impression. It also reminded us, in our own work, of what we should value most. It was just a single firefly we found at midnight, but its glow in the palm of our hands soothed us. Thank you very much. We will visit again.

    I made a bit of a sp...

    I made a bit of a splurge with this Reservation, so I don’t think I can visit often, but I definitely want to come again. I visited on a day with light rain and strong winds, and the atmosphere was wonderful. The Room was surrounded by bamboo and greenery, which felt very soothing. The view from the annex lounge was also beautiful, and since it was sunny the next day, I enjoyed a different scenery as well. Of course the Room, Onsen, and meals were excellent, but I was especially moved by the hospitality of the attendant who took care of us. Without us even asking, she took photos for us in various spots, prepared multiple colors of yukata for us to choose from, and even arranged late-night snacks so we could eat in our Room at night. Her thoughtful attention to our needs made us feel truly comfortable. The next day we also visited the sightseeing spots she recommended, which made for a very fulfilling trip. This trip has become an unforgettable memory. Thank you so much. I felt that many guests might be couples or spouses—do you also accommodate families? I’d love to visit again with my parents.

    Both Ryokans and schools exist because of the people who make them possible.

    A major reason to stay at this Accommodation is her warm hospitality. She laughs and says I’m like a rock star, but I’m just a high school teacher and local public servant. Talking with her reminds me that in both a Ryokan and a school, people are the greatest treasure—and that any Facility shines only because of the people there. I’m sure I’ll come back to see her again.

    First Visit to Yuhigaura Onsen for Crab Delicacies

    I stayed alone at the accommodation. The room was a detached unit, allowing me to enjoy a very quiet stay. The Japanese-style room felt a bit old, but the living room seemed newly renovated and was very clean. With floor heating and a large sofa, it was so comfortable that I spent most of my time there. The drinks in the refrigerator were complimentary, and when they found out I couldn't drink alcohol, they replaced everything with soft drinks for me. The bathroom in the room was spacious, and I enjoyed soaking multiple times while admiring the snowy scenery. However, since it seemed to be circulating water rather than free-flowing hot spring water and there was a slight smell of disinfectant, I deducted one star for this aspect. The crab dinner exceeded expectations in both quality and quantity. The plan included two small Matsuba crabs per person; however, having two crabs all to myself turned out to be quite overwhelming! From raw to grilled, steamed, shabu-shabu style, and even porridge at the end—it was all absolutely satisfying. As for service, young female staff members handled tasks like showing me around my room and serving meals with wonderful smiles that left a great impression. Although there was an unexpected situation where all trains were canceled due to heavy snow on my departure day, their affiliated accommodation arranged a bus that took us as far as Fukuchiyama Station—an act of kindness for which I am truly grateful. Thank you very much!

    Accommodation for a 2-Night Stay

    The hospitality of the staff, the high quality and generous portions of the cuisine, the impressive selection of local sake, the wonderful room with an onsen open-air bath—this accommodation offers an unparalleled level of satisfaction. The only regret is not booking a multiple night stay... The room was so spacious and beautifully arranged that I wished to enjoy a relaxing second day from breakfast until evening. This time was during crab season, but I would love to stay again outside crab season to see what other dishes they offer. Truly an excellent accommodation.

    I have stayed at this accommodation multiple times. The rooms have been renovated, and the finer details are now beautifully improved. The open-air bath is spacious, and I really like this ryokan. I was also happy to be able to use the lounge in the adjacent building. This time, I chose the crab-focused course, but it was disappointing that there was no crab hot pot as it didn’t warm me up. I would love to enjoy crab shabu-shabu and drink delicious broth as well. If it's only steamed or grilled... it gets a bit monotonous. With two crabs for two people, we’d like to try various ways of eating them. Additionally, when eating steamed or grilled dishes, if the serving plates aren’t warm, they cool down quickly which is unfortunate. It seems that some changes were made to the cuisine because there’s a new head chef. This is a wonderful ryokan with attention to detail in its tableware and other aspects; I hope my feedback will be considered...

    A truly exceptional accommodation that warmly welcomes you with a heartfelt "Welcome back." From the driver who kindly picked us up at the station to the attentive service throughout our stay and even at our departure, every staff member's thoughtfulness was genuinely moving. The cuisine, as always, showcased impeccable taste and balance. This time, we indulged in over 1kg of crab to our heart's content—both flavor and portion were absolutely satisfying.     I used this accommod...

    I used this accommodation to celebrate his birthday. The food was generally average, but the dish offered as an apology was delicious. However, there were noticeable shortcomings in the service. Items that were supposed to be delivered to the room did not arrive, and the breakfast time communicated the day before was incorrect, resulting in a 30-minute wait for white rice to be served. Additionally, a commemorative photo was taken during dinner and we were told it would be given later, but we never received it. We assumed it would be inside the bag of roasted sweet potatoes given as a souvenir and did not check at that moment, only realizing later that it wasn’t included. Considering its positioning as a luxury ryokan and the accommodation fee charged, basic checks and handovers seemed insufficient, leaving us feeling underwhelmed for a special occasion stay.

    The Best Ryokan of the Year

    There are so many great aspects, but to mention areas for improvement first: the parking lot (covered) is a bit narrow. Since many guests may arrive with larger vehicles, this could be considered. Additionally, during winter, having lap blankets in the room would be helpful (even though there is floor heating, it can feel slightly chilly when dozing off). From the warm welcome to the detailed explanation of the room, preparation of outdoor cloaks, well-stocked amenities, and thoughtful timing of meals—how such wonderful service is achieved is truly admirable. The service was impeccable overall. Personally, I was deeply moved by how everything down to details like soy sauce by the chef, pickles, and sansho chirimen (the crab dishes were exceptional as well) felt "handcrafted." The breakfast also impressed with its variety of dishes, delicate flavors, beautiful tableware for each item served—and even different types of tea offered one after another—leaving my heart completely satisfied. The garden view from the Onsen changes between day and night; true to its name as a place often graced by rain—it rained at night during our stay—but that only added an enchanting touch to what was already a magical Onsen experience. I also had the chance to see a large lantern made by my friend; it brought such calmness and relaxation. Upon departure came more delightful surprises: sansho chirimen prepared by your chef along with sweet roasted sweet potatoes (so sugary they seemed ready to drip honey), plus some tea tucked in for us—all making our drive home wonderfully pleasant. Thanks to this incredible experience... I gained 3kg! So dieting starts tomorrow! If given another opportunity next time—I’d love nothing more than meeting your talented chef in person. Thank you very much!

    Accommodation with Exceptional Hospitality

    We were extremely satisfied with the hospitality. Since both of our mothers had difficulty walking, we greatly appreciated being accommodated in a location close to the dining area and provided with shuttle service for transportation. The meals were delicious, with just the right portions, and both elderly mothers finished everything, leaving them very satisfied. The room was well-stocked with a variety of beverages, ensuring we never ran out—thank you for that thoughtful touch. Additionally, the sweet potatoes given to us upon departure were enjoyed by our mothers in the car on the way home. Thank you very much!

    It is indeed a great accommodation.

    This was our first visit in two years, as per my mother's wish. Due to her mobility issues and food allergies, we made several requests during the reservation process, all of which were kindly accommodated. We are truly grateful for the thoughtful consideration. The facility, service, meals, and hot springs were just as wonderful as we remembered. Although the head chef has changed and the style of cuisine felt slightly different, everything was still delicious. As always, I couldn't finish the chestnut rice at the end due to being too full; however, they kindly made it into rice balls for a late-night snack that I enjoyed with a touch of guilt later on. One thing that caught my attention was that during dinner service there seemed to be long intervals between dishes—perhaps due to staffing shortages? Breakfast was also delightful but left me too full again; unfortunately, I couldn’t finish the locally sourced Tango Koshihikari rice either—I almost wished I could take it home as rice balls! The red rice served with white porridge reminded me fondly of their previous red rice porridge offering. Two minor points worth mentioning: 1) Upon arrival, there was no guidance provided about Fuuka’s large bath or Aoi facilities. We weren’t informed that Aoi could only be used from 5 PM onwards and ended up using it earlier than allowed—causing inconvenience for Fuuka’s staff members. 2) The surface of the outdoor geta sandals felt very slippery despite having anti-slip socks provided; walking in them still felt challenging. These are small details and did not detract from an otherwise wonderful stay. With summer's intense heat finally subsiding somewhat—it turned out to be a great trip overall! My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone at this accommodation who took care of us so well—I look forward eagerly toward visiting again someday soon! Thank you very much!

    The facility itself shows some signs of aging, but it is well-maintained and impeccably clean. The quality of the cuisine, the spacious bath, the service, and attention to detail are all excellent. This accommodation is perfect as a hidden retreat for adults.     Guest satisfaction is exceptionally high.

    We stayed during the Obon holiday, and my pregnant wife and I were well taken care of. The staff showed great consideration for my wife, and our attendant was exceptionally hospitable, which made us understand why other reviews are so positive. The cuisine was of a high standard, with delicious Japanese dishes that exceeded our expectations. The room's private bath was thoughtfully designed and spacious, making it the most frequently used among all the ryokans with private baths we have visited so far. It was a wonderful ryokan that we would love to revisit if given the chance.

    First Stay

    This was my first stay at this accommodation. I was completely satisfied with everything, including the room, meals, onsen, and the staff's hospitality. I also used the spa and lounge at the sister facility, which were equally satisfying. This trip was meant to relieve work fatigue nearby, and my family of three truly felt refreshed and forgot about daily life. Next time, I plan to visit again during crab season.     Impressed by the crab and hospitality

    We visited in time for the crab season. As our purpose was to enjoy crabs, we were very satisfied to have one high-quality live crab weighing over 1 kilogram per person. Considering the price of tagged live crabs alone, staying in a Room with an open-air bath at this price offers great value for money, and we were extremely pleased. The Room had a modest and refined charm, and we were able to relax in the spacious open-air bath. The view from the lounge of the adjacent Kashoen Villa Fuuka was excellent, and we could enjoy the sunset. After breakfast, we visited the lounge for coffee and were deeply impressed by the highly hospitable staff we encountered there. The Room and all the other staff maintained a perfect balance of attentiveness, allowing us to spend a very comfortable and pleasant holiday.

    This is my second stay, and I've never had an unpleasant experience at the property. Everyone is very courteous, and the meals are absolutely delicious. The portions are quite substantial, so make sure to come with a good appetite.

    I was disappointed because my previous experience was too good.

    During my previous visit, I was impressed by both the service and the food, so this time, for my mother's birthday, we decided to visit again as a family. We were informed that we could use the newly opened Fuka Lounge before dinner, so we did. A young woman who had just joined the staff attended to us, but her overly familiar way of speaking was not what one would expect at a luxury Ryokan. Perhaps because there were no other guests, she stood by our family and kept talking, not leaving us alone. It was very uncomfortable. In a luxury Ryokan lounge, we wanted to relax, so small talk from the staff was unnecessary. After leaving the lounge, we returned to Ujo Soan and had dinner, but again, the staff was overly talkative. It was the first time at a luxury Ryokan that I experienced such excessive conversation, and it was unpleasant. Additionally, it seems the head chef had changed since our last visit, as both the quality and quantity of the food had significantly declined. The meal was supposed to feature autumn ingredients, and while we were served matsutake mushroom dobinmushi, we expected matsutake rice at the end, but it was chestnut and sweet potato rice instead. I was surprised to see sweet potato rice at a luxury Ryokan. Furthermore, when the final rice was served, there was no soup, and when I asked, I was told to drink the shabu-shabu broth, which was shocking. Perhaps because our previous visit to this luxury Ryokan was so exceptional, this time was truly disappointing.
