    A mediocre Ryokan

    The proprietress clearly hasn’t trained her staff properly. She only thinks from her own standpoint. The glass inside the property is dirty, and even if you give a tip, nothing is done. The Room smells musty, I recommend not going.

    We were very satisfied. We will definitely come again with our family.

    I came here with a friend to relax and unwind in the natural hot spring water. This time we chose a more budget-friendly stay, so we skipped dinner. The Facility has a traditional Japanese design with great atmosphere, and it was truly calming. The hallways are covered with tatami mats, so it felt nice to walk around barefoot. The bath was incredibly relaxing—excellent. I was also able to fully unwind in the lobby. The onsen eggs were delicious, and breakfast was great as well. The Room had beds, so I could relax comfortably. One thing I didn’t expect was how few places there are to eat around the Accommodation. Many restaurants were closed on their regular days off, so finding somewhere for dinner took some effort. Also, when I misplaced something, their courteous support really helped. Every staff member greeted us with a smile and spoke politely—perfect service overall. Highly recommended.

    The Comfort of a Japanese Ryokan

    I enjoyed the charm of a good old-fashioned Japanese Ryokan. Everything was very clean, and the tatami-focused interior meant no slippers were needed, which made it very relaxing. The Japanese-style Room was spacious enough. I was a little disappointed that there were no sweets provided in the Room. The open-air bath was at just the right temperature, and I could unwind comfortably. The food suited my taste, and the portions were filling for an older guest. The beef wrapped in magnolia leaves was difficult to bite through, so I think it would be better if it were cut into smaller pieces or made more tender. Check-out is at 11:00, so we could take our time. I really appreciated what makes a long-established Ryokan special.

    I want to stay here again!

    This time, for my mother’s birthday, our family decided to stay at the Awara Onsen we had been curious about for a long time. From the warm welcome at the entrance, we were impressed by the exceptionally courteous service. The Room was very spacious, spotlessly clean, and well maintained down to every detail. The Onsen and lounge services were excellent, and breakfast was served in a private room with great food and attentive service. Our whole family was very satisfied, and after checking Instagram, they said they would like to stay again with friends next time. When I visit Fukui again, I would love to stay at Tsuruyasan.

    A Cozy Accommodation

    Choosing a Room with an open-air bath was absolutely the right decision! Since the standard Rooms are not Onsen, we opted for one with an open-air bath. When we entered, the main Room felt even more spacious than it looked on the website. Opening the shoji screens revealed a beautiful garden—an unforgettable sight. We were also surprised to learn that two bottles of wine, two bottles of sake, four beers in the refrigerator, and soft drinks were included in the Accommodation Fee. The service was pleasant and the food was delicious. Both our Room and the large public bath featured free-flowing natural hot spring water—truly exceptional. We had a wonderful stay, warmly seen off by the proprietress and staff.

    At Awara Onsen Tsuruya

    This was our first stay. After we made our Reservation, we received a confirmation call and were kindly asked, “Is there anything we can help you with?” When I explained that we were visiting Fukui for my mother-in-law’s interment, you thoughtfully prepared an offering meal for her at both dinner and breakfast. Your warm consideration truly moved me. Every dish was delicious, and we enjoyed the carefully prepared seasonal cuisine at a relaxed pace. In particular, the white rice cooked in a copper pot at breakfast was exceptional—fluffy with just a hint of crispy rice at the bottom—and I savored every last bite with happiness. Everyone who assisted us—the attendant who guided us, as well as the front desk staff and dining staff—provided natural, comfortable hospitality. The attention to detail was thoughtful yet never intrusive, allowing us to spend our time in calm comfort throughout our stay. This trip marked an important milestone for our family, and thanks to you, we were able to quietly remember our loved one together while spending truly peaceful time here. We would love to visit again in another season. Thank you very much.

    Everything is great.

    My spouse and I stayed for one night on June 3. We have stayed at many Ryokan and Hotels, but it had been a long time since we were welcomed with such a truly traditional Ryokan-style reception, and we were genuinely impressed. The entire property is tatami throughout and was spotlessly clean, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. All of the staff were very pleasant as well. After check-out, a staff member kindly offered to take our photo and did so for us. On our way back, they waved to us until the Shuttle Service bus was out of sight. Everything was perfect—this is the first Ryokan that has made us want to stay again without hesitation. Thank you very much.

    A Historic Onsen Accommodation

    It was my first time back in Awara Onsen in a while, and I chose this Accommodation hoping to enjoy a nice stay, but my expectations may have been too high. The Facility, including the toilet in the Room, felt dated but was clean. On the other hand, I found it lacking in small details—for example, there was no pitcher of cold water or deodorizing spray provided. We were able to have both dinner and breakfast in a private dining room, and the staff were kind and attentive. It was also nice to be able to make and eat Onsen eggs. I appreciated the service of having beer and wine available as well. However, overall I didn’t feel the satisfaction matched the price. Perhaps because I often stay at more modern Accommodations, I couldn’t really appreciate what makes a long-established inn special.

    It was an amazing stay.

    This was my first stay in Awara Onsen, and choosing Tsuruya was absolutely the right decision. It is a long-established Ryokan with a rich history, yet it is very well maintained. The lobby and hallways are spacious, and the Room was spotless and impeccably clean. While some Ryokan have been renovated in a modern style, I prefer refined places like Tsuruya. We were able to enjoy our meal quietly and at a relaxed pace in a private dining room, and everything tasted excellent. We also thoroughly enjoyed the free-flowing hot spring bath fed directly from the source. The proprietress, attendants, and all staff were consistently warm and welcoming, making our stay extremely comfortable—truly an outstanding experience. Thank you very much!

    The hospitality was exceptional.

    I stayed here with my wife and grandchild during a history-focused trip visiting Maruoka Castle and Ichijodani. From check-in to check-out, the staff’s polite manner and warm smiles were truly soothing, and we felt heartfelt hospitality from everyone. At dinner, each dish was briefly explained in terms of ingredients and preparation, which made the meal even more enjoyable. Every course was highly satisfying. The recommended sake called “Okami” was also excellent—even my wife, who doesn’t usually drink much alcohol, enjoyed it and said it was delicious. We purchased some as a souvenir on our way home. The Onsen features free-flowing natural spring water, warming us through to the core and leaving our skin smooth. We look forward to visiting again in a different season next time.     A Welcoming Accommodation with Warm Hospitality

    I stayed in mid-March. I was looking for a Hotel or Accommodation where I could eat Echizen crab, but it was already late in the season and Tsuruya was the only place still offering it, so I made a Reservation. The town of Awara Onsen itself felt uniquely charming—there’s a nostalgic atmosphere with Showa-era streetscapes, blended with fresh ideas from newer commercial facilities. At the Accommodation as well, the young proprietress and long-time staff provided warm hospitality throughout the Hotel, and I felt very comfortable. There were plenty of things to enjoy, including a lounge available 24 hours a day, a footbath, bathing areas, and even a spot where you can make onsen eggs. It was wonderful to see such a wide range of guests—from elementary school children to elderly visitors likely in their 80s using canes—everyone spending time with smiles. The meals were not overly seasoned, so we could enjoy them with peace of mind. And most importantly, the Echizen crab was outstanding. Since there is Shuttle Service from the Shinkansen station, it seems reassuring even in midwinter; next time I’d like to bring my mother, who turns 88 this year. At checkout, it left an impression on me when two elderly couples warmly said goodbye to each other with “Let’s stay healthy and meet here again next year.” Thank you very much for everything. As for the guest room: outside lighting came into the bedroom quite a bit. It was convenient when getting up at night to use the restroom, but since I had trouble falling asleep, I’m giving 4 stars for that reason. I think it depends on each person.

    We were truly able to relax.

    Thanks to the attentive hospitality, I was able to truly relax. Even with the course focused on quality over quantity, I was completely full. The entire Accommodation was quiet and calming. Making my own Onsen egg was fun. I think it could have been even more enjoyable with a few more ideas on how to eat it.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    While the building itself has a sense of history, it is thoroughly well maintained down to every detail, and we did not feel any inconvenience or age-related discomfort. All of the staff were extremely kind and attentive, making our stay a warm and wonderful memory. We sincerely thank you. Also, the Onsen eggs we made ourselves were delicious—I ended up having them again and again. As a long-established Ryokan in Awara Onsen, I think this is a truly wonderful Accommodation where you can fully experience its charm. The only disappointing point was that we noticed black mold on the tip of the washlet nozzle. We cleaned it lightly ourselves, but for hygiene reasons I recommend addressing this as soon as possible. Because of this, I had no choice but to lower my rating; however, overall we were very satisfied with our stay and would definitely like to visit again.

    A bit disappointing.

    I stayed at this Accommodation on my birthday. I chose a slightly upgraded dining course, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. It wasn’t that the food was bad, but it didn’t feel satisfying. I go to an Onsen about ten times a year, but the Ryokan and Hotel I like are more than 500 km from my home. Now that I’m 72, I visited hoping to find a favorite closer to home. However, for an Accommodation in this class, the only disappointment was the meals. The staff provided excellent service throughout, and I also appreciated the greeting from the proprietress, which is rare these days. Still, both dinner and breakfast felt somewhat lacking. I would be willing to pay a bit more if the food were improved to something truly satisfying—then I would stay about twice a year. Overall, it ended up being a somewhat disappointing stay.

    From the pick-up bus to our departure, we received wonderful service. The Room was clean and spacious, and we were able to relax comfortably. The meals were very refined and delicious. The white rice in particular was exceptionally tasty and truly impressed us.

    A high-quality Onsen Ryokan

    The Onsen features natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source, with complimentary onsen eggs and a foot bath, making for a delightful stay. We stayed in a Japanese-Western style room, which was spacious and had incredibly comfortable beds. Both dinner and breakfast were served in just the right portions with an emphasis on quality. Thanks to Tsuruyasan, I’ve become a big fan of Awara Onsen!

    It was a great accommodation.

    Thank you for your hospitality. I stayed at Tsuruyasan for the first time, looking for an Onsen accommodation where I could relax with a friend I hadn't seen in a year. From the moment we were picked up at Awara Onsen Station, the warm welcome from an older gentleman made us feel comfortable and relaxed. The young room attendant from Myanmar was also very polite and attentive, and every dish served was incredibly delicious and impressive. Additionally, the young and charming proprietress came to greet us personally, which made it clear why this accommodation has such a warm atmosphere created by its staff members. My friend was delighted as well, making it a truly memorable experience. Later on, I learned that the proprietress had previously worked at Kagaya. After my marriage, my husband and I traveled to Hokuriku because we wanted to stay at Kagaya back then; this brought back fond memories of that trip as well. We are now planning to visit again next year together with my husband. Thank you so much!

    Everything was excellent.

    We stayed at the accommodation for the first time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The staff provided warm and attentive hospitality, which was truly soothing. The facility was clean, with a calm atmosphere that made it very comfortable. Each dish was carefully prepared, incredibly delicious, and served at perfect timing. To commemorate our special day, we even received a lovely keepsake and were able to spend an unforgettable and special time. It was an absolutely wonderful ryokan with no complaints whatsoever.     We arrived late as we came after the children finished school, but we were deeply moved by the warm welcome, with staff waiting for us outside and greeting us at the entrance. The proprietress, attendants, and all staff were friendly, kind, and welcoming, creating a pleasant atmosphere. In the lounge, there was an unlimited supply of Onsen eggs to enjoy along with coffee, alcohol, and ice bars. The meals were visually delightful and delicious as well. The tatami flooring in the hallways made walking comfortable. The bath area featured a relaxing reclining bath with excellent water quality for a soothing experience.

    The bath and the food were excellent.

    The large public bath operates on a morning and evening rotation system, allowing guests to enjoy different garden views. The Onsen water is silky smooth, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. You can also relax at your own pace by using the Room's private bath anytime you like. The food was delightful, especially the nodoguro fish. The Sokaku Room was absolutely wonderful, and I left feeling refreshed and light-headed. Thank you so much!

    This is my third stay this year. Every time, I leave with a great impression. I wanted to stay during the New Year as well, but unfortunately, it was fully booked from the end of December to January 3rd. I understand many guests visit every year during this time.     I chose to stay here...

    I chose to stay here again because my previous experience was excellent. The food is delicious, and the building has a traditional charm. The staff, including the Nakai-san and Okami, are kind to children, making it a favorite accommodation for our family. We stayed in the spacious Daikan Room with an attached bath and a tea room. It was convenient as one of our children could study in a separate space while we enjoyed other areas of the room. The hot water in the room was so pleasant that we didn’t visit the public bath. However, one downside was that construction work on an adjacent property affected the atmosphere; although it wasn’t active during our stay due to it being a holiday, during daytime hours, scaffolding and pipes were visible from the open-air bath area, which detracted from its ambiance. As for Awara Onsen as a whole, vacant lots and aging buildings stand out in some areas, which unfortunately diminishes opportunities for enjoyable walks or appreciating its charm fully.

    Simply amazing!

    I stayed here for the first time with my mother and daughter on our trip. Although we were not used to traveling and even got on the wrong train, we were so grateful that someone came to pick us up at the station where we got off. The room was spacious and clean, and the bath was absolutely wonderful. Thanks to it, my tired skin became smooth and radiant. Everything in the accommodation, even a single flower placed inside, was beautiful. My mother, who is very particular about interiors, was deeply impressed. The staff who provided shuttle service and the attendants were incredibly kind. We had no specific plan for Fukui but thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tsuruyasan. On our way back, my daughter—who is very particular about beauty—was secretly admiring how "beautiful" everything was when she met the elegant yet friendly proprietress. Through casual conversations with staff members, I could feel the warmth of this accommodation deeply. Even now, I am filled with fond memories of how wonderful this place is. This time we only had breakfast during our stay; not being able to try dinner remains a regret. I definitely hope to visit again in the future!

    It was absolutely amazing!

    This is my second stay. Just like last time, I experienced the warm hospitality of the staff and was able to relax. It’s truly excellent. Due to the location of Awara Onsen, there are no views of the sea or mountains, so the scenery isn’t great, but staying at this accommodation alone makes it worth visiting. I would definitely like to stay again. Thank you very much!
