    We stayed here on a ...

    We stayed here on a family trip. It was our first family trip in a while, and since I had made a Reservation thinking it seemed like a wonderful Ryokan, I was looking forward to relaxing and forgetting the busyness of everyday life. Upon arrival, there was one pair of in-house slippers missing, so I informed the staff member who was in charge of our meals. Perhaps because dinner time was approaching, there was no apology at all—just a dismissive “Yes, yes.” While we were changing clothes and getting settled, they came into the Room as-is and left the slippers. Also at breakfast, they came to our Room about five minutes before the scheduled time and told us, “It’s time for breakfast.” We hurried to the dining room, but before anyone had even sat down they began explaining the meal; some guests couldn’t hear the explanation at all before breakfast started. The food itself was delicious, but I couldn’t help feeling that the service was rushed and lacking consideration. Many of the other staff were courteous. We appreciated their detailed guidance to Mt. Konpira and their prompt Shuttle Service from the parking lot. There is also a back path from the Ryokan leading toward Mt. Konpira, allowing you to take a cool mountain trail. As for Facilities, there is an Onsen both outdoors and indoors; in particular, the open-air bath felt wonderful. The shared area also had computers and massage chairs. There are paid services such as karaoke and table tennis; we enjoyed karaoke. Because JOYSOUND karaoke equipment is installed in a spacious room with many song options available, we were able to have an enjoyable time. At the lounge bar we had drinks after 10 p.m. We had hoped for a quiet evening; however, what appeared to be a large Chinese family group brought small children who watched videos while others talked loudly and laughed, so it wasn’t relaxing and felt disappointing. It’s such a lovely space that measures such as an age limit might be worth considering. Because we visited with high expectations, there were various points we noticed and wanted to share. I hope this feedback can help improve service going forward.

    Reconfirmation of Amenities

    This Ryokan has hosted many renowned writers, and my wife and I stayed in the detached guesthouse, Sentei, to relax together. With 400 years of history and a subdued, rustic atmosphere, it’s definitely a matter of taste. We chose it without much prior research. If you’re looking for modern comfort and the latest amenities, you may be better off choosing a Hotel. This was our first trip to Kagawa, prompted by my wife’s wish to relive the nostalgia of a school trip. We did some preparation, but as always with travel, things didn’t go exactly as planned. What truly helped us was the Ryokan staff—they gave us detailed advice. Many of them were from Nepal. Setting comparisons aside, they answered all our questions with clear information and solid Japanese. They could explain which udon shops had what kind of broth and texture—because they had tried them themselves—and even shared their own comparisons. They also explained the history of the Ryokan. When it came to ingredients and their commitment to local production for local consumption, they spoke from firsthand experience after visiting places themselves. I was genuinely impressed by their professionalism and dedication—something I feel we Japanese could learn from. My wife was happy to recreate her school-trip memories, and we both left satisfied with the Accommodation’s atmosphere, the food, and above all the staff’s attitude toward their work.

    I stayed one night t...

    I stayed one night to visit Konpira Shrine. I considered Shikishimakan in the bustle along the main approach, but Kotohira Kadan, located a little farther away, was calm and relaxing. Because it sits on higher ground, the views were excellent. The food was neither particularly good nor bad, but the staff were very attentive, so I had a comfortable stay. The Onsen was very spacious and well maintained, which made it especially enjoyable.

    The Room is wonderful.

    My family of three stayed in Sansuikaku’s Japanese-Western Room E. Since the Accommodation is located at the foot of a mountain, there are significant elevation changes throughout the property, including the parking area. They provided a Shuttle Service between the parking area and the Accommodation. The Room was new, and both the view and the open-air bath were wonderful. I also liked that the door closes slowly on its own. I felt so happy relaxing with a cup of coffee. The private open-air bath was clean and very nice as well. Dinner at the dining venue was delicious. The beef and matcha shiruko were especially good—I ate too much. Breakfast felt light, perhaps because it was summer; I wouldn’t have minded something a bit more classic. All staff members were pleasant, but after checkout I felt slightly rushed during the Shuttle Service to the parking area (perhaps they wanted to combine rides with other guests). We did want to leave promptly as well, so I would have appreciated being asked, “We can take you right now—what would you prefer?” As an aside, after returning home I learned that my favorite celebrity had stayed here too, which made it feel even more special. Thank you very much for taking care of us!

    It was great.

    I thought this was an excellent Hotel, with impeccable staff service and great on-site Facilities. However, when pulling up to the Hotel to load or unload luggage, the entrance layout makes it unavoidable to make a U-turn somewhere, which felt inconvenient even though Shuttle Service is available.

    I think it’s worth staying in a special room at least once.

    Staying in the historic annex was a wonderful experience. The overall atmosphere of the Accommodation, the private bath, and the warm, kind service from the staff were all excellent, and I can recommend it as an Accommodation unique to this area. On the other hand, the meals felt average and did not have any particularly standout features. However, there was a wide selection of sake, which was appealing for enjoying local varieties.

    Everything was very clean, and we had a very comfortable stay. The food was also perfectly seasoned, and we were very satisfied. It would be great if the Room had a tabletop stand mirror or something similar. We would definitely like to come again.

    A charming Accommodation with a sense of history

    I stayed in the annex, and the private baths inside the Accommodation were especially wonderful. The garden was beautiful and gave a real sense of history. It was also nice that you can enter the Accommodation from a back street off the Konpira approach. The many foreign staff members are well trained, but I sometimes had to listen carefully to understand what they were saying. Some foreign guests were speaking loudly in English and debating in the open-air bath; I could understand them even without trying, so I moved to the indoor bath. They left after washing thoroughly at the end without getting back into the tub, which left me wondering whether they had entered the tub before washing. Breakfast was good.

    As expected of the Awaji Group.

    The car parking area surprised me a bit, but once I was guided into the Hotel, the maze-like path from the entrance to the lobby made sense—it felt calm and well designed. The Room came with an open-air bath, so I was able to enjoy a wonderfully open and elegant time. Both dinner and breakfast were completely satisfying and reminded me how great Japanese cuisine is. The Awaji beef roast beef was outstanding, and I’m already craving the fish-ball hot pot, braised pork, firefly squid, and more. Breakfast was excellent as well. It’s definitely worth staying at least once.

    Although many of the staff were from overseas, the service and hospitality were excellent. During meals, they didn’t just serve us—they were attentive and we enjoyed chatting about various things, which made for a wonderful time. Thank you very much.

    An Accommodation with Stunning Views and Exceptional Hospitality

    The view from the Room was wonderful, and we were able to relax and enjoy a very comfortable stay. We traveled with our 3-year-old and 0-year-old this time, and thanks to the excellent hospitality of all the staff, we had a pleasant stay and were very satisfied. The meals used local ingredients, and everything was delicious. However, getting to the inner shrine of Kotohira-gu the next day was tough with two kids (lol).

    We were very satisfied.

    My mother, who is nearly 90, and I—her daughter nearing retirement—stayed for one night as a little self-reward. The barrier-free Room was spacious with a wonderful view, and perhaps because many of the guests were adults, it had a calm, relaxing atmosphere rather than being lively. Choosing this Accommodation was absolutely the right decision. The in-room setting and service were attentive and beautifully done, and we felt genuine warmth. The cuisine was seasonal, beautifully presented, and truly delicious. We were also happy to dine in a private room. I tend to plan busy trips packed with sightseeing and events, but from now on I’d like to travel at a slower pace—and I think Kotohira Kadan is perfect for that kind of trip. Thank you for such a comfortable time.

    An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return to Again and Again

    Every time I stay here, I leave with a warm feeling. The service is never excessive and the style is not overly trendy—yet it is by no means outdated. The staff are always very kind, and the international staff also provide high-quality hospitality. It is a beautiful Accommodation that I am truly satisfied with. The on-site spa is also a calm Facility, and I was very pleased with both the treatments and the therapists. Thank you very much.

    All the staff were kind, which made our stay truly heartwarming. Each dish was carefully prepared and absolutely delicious. The rice was exceptional as well! The detached Room and the large public bath were both clean, and we had a very comfortable stay.

    I have used other Awaji Group facilities multiple times.

    Compared to others, everything felt careless. During my Multiple Night Stay, I found unfamiliar trash after cleaning. The explanations, consideration, and meals were better at other Awaji Group locations. Since this is a tourist area, foreign visitors or those from outside the prefecture who haven't experienced other Awaji Group facilities might rate it positively without knowing better. It was simply disappointing.

    We wish you a safe and successful visit to Kotohira Shrine.

    The entrance is located at the top of a steep slope, and the Ryokan consists of several buildings intricately built on the hillside. From the third-floor lounge of Shogetsu Terrace, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Sanuki Fuji and the Sanuki Plain. However, in contrast, our Room on the fourth floor was disappointing as it faced a garden pathway due to its hillside location and complex structure with roads. This allowed people to look into our Room through the window. It would be better if there were some kind of fence or screen for privacy. The food was delicious, as expected from a gourmet Plan crafted by the head chef. We particularly enjoyed Kotohira Kadan's signature Koumi Nabe hot pot. The broth was rich in flavor, so much so that we drank it all without leaving any behind. However, perhaps for efficiency reasons, most dishes except for covered items like soup bowls and desserts were served all at once at the beginning, which felt slightly overwhelming. While explanations were provided properly, receiving them all at once made it hard to fully understand each dish. It would be appreciated if dishes could be served one by one. The Room was clean and well-maintained with nice amenities including an open-air bath; however, only the view was disappointing. The staff seemed sincere and down-to-earth locals who provided polite service but appeared to smile less than expected. Regarding Konpira Shrine—an essential part of this Ryokan’s appeal—we found that as elderly guests we struggled with its steep stairs lacking handrails despite having landings between sections. Using walking sticks also proved difficult here. While locals seem aware of these issues but cite historical preservation as a reason against modifications such as installing handrails or other aids—it is crucial to prioritize visitor safety in order to attract more tourists effectively moving forward! We humbly hope local authorities along with tourism industries & shopping districts collaborate further ensuring this cultural treasure doesn’t go underutilized!

    Company Retreat

    Thank you for your hospitality. The Onsen suited me well, and my skin became smooth. I was looking forward to using the massage chair, but I did not use it as the cover was torn and stuffing was exposed, making it unsanitary. Additionally, I felt there was no added value in using the lounge, which was disappointing. The person in charge of the Shuttle Service was kind and left a great impression on me.

    Everything was handled with care.

    Pick-up service from the parking lot to the accommodation. Introduction and guidance about the accommodation. Details of meals. The wine paired wonderfully with the food. Staff were approachable, kind, and shared stories about a delicious udon restaurant, which was much appreciated. At check-out, when mentioning plans to visit Konpira-san shrine, I was kindly lent a walking stick that was long and slightly thick, making it very comfortable to walk with. Thank you very much!

    A wall directly in front of the bathtub.

    Fujimidai - Japanese-style room with private open-air bath. The bathtub faces a black wall, and beyond the wall seems to be some kind of circulation system for the floor? You can hear motor noises while bathing and staring at the wall. It's just an outdoor tub, very different from the photos, so be cautious. The bathroom in the room has a warped floor that feels like it might give way. The sink is old, narrow, and difficult to use. The craft beer ordered for dinner had only two days left before its expiration date, though my companion's had about a month remaining. This raises questions about quality control standards. For what I consider a fairly high price point, it was surprising. Upon checkout, I mentioned that it couldn't really be called an open-air bath and was too different from the photos provided; however, their response felt dismissive with something like "Oh...and?" While they may not have intended it that way, my companion also perceived it as such—something to watch out for. It's unfortunate because staff handling parking shuttle service and check-in left good impressions; however, this final interaction turned what could have been a pleasant stay into disappointment at this accommodation.

    I would love to visit again.

    The traditional Japanese-style Ryokan has been beautifully renovated. Both dinner and breakfast featured delicious dishes made with local ingredients. Breakfast was served in a set meal style rather than a buffet, and the staff provided excellent service with detailed explanations. The grilled horse mackerel cooked over a net was exceptional. Its location is within walking distance to Konpira-san, so we went for a stroll after check-out, and they kindly allowed us to continue using the parking lot.

    40th Wedding Anniversary Celebration

    The service was excellent, and I was impressed by the high quality of the foreign staff. I used the bath right after check-in and again first thing in the morning, and it was a private experience both times, which was very satisfying. My wife felt the same way. Both the Room and meals were great.

    Revisiting Kotohira: A Comfortable Accommodation Experience

    In 2017, I stayed at "Kotohira Kadan" during my visit to Kotohira. This historic and renowned Ryokan has hosted many notable guests over the years. At that time, I was able to visit Kotohiragu Shrine via the exclusive path for the Ryokan, and I wanted my wife to experience that same sense of wonder, which led me to decide on this revisit. It turned out to be a perfect choice. This time, we stayed in "Sentei," a private villa (one of only three exclusive villas at the Ryokan). On our way to the room, we walked with a staff member through a beautiful garden while admiring the pond right in front of our villa. The room had a traditional ambiance but featured very comfortable beds and all necessary facilities, leaving us with no inconvenience at all. The meals served for breakfast and dinner were exceptionally delicious, and by the end of our trip, my wife remarked that "Kotohira Kadan was the most comfortable part of this journey." It truly was an outstanding stay for which we are deeply grateful. I will definitely recommend it to friends who have yet to discover Kotohira!

    View from the Open-Air Bath

    The room at Fujimidai had some issues, possibly due to its age. The room key was difficult to turn, the floor creaked, and when the lights were turned on, a thin layer of dust became visible on the walls. Upon closer inspection, less noticeable areas seemed similar. The meal we reserved was a special Kaiseki course that we were very much looking forward to. While it wasn’t bad in appearance or taste, it lacked a sense of uniqueness. Breakfast was satisfying, and the barley rice was delicious. The staff member who attended us was foreign but provided polite language and excellent service. After visiting Konpira Shrine, we enjoyed the private open-air bath attached to our room with views of Kotohira town through the trees—it truly washed away our fatigue.

    I stayed for a Multiple Night Stay when I visited this year's Shikoku Konpira Kabuki. Watching the Konpira Kabuki, which I had always dreamed of experiencing at least once in my life, combined with staying at the Ryokan made it an incredibly special memory. The unique entrance and building design initially caused me to get lost in various places, but that only enhanced the sense of being away from everyday life. Due to the location and structure of the building, I could enjoy a panoramic view from high up, which felt refreshing for my eyes that are usually focused on close-up screens like PCs. The garden with cherry blossoms still blooming was beautiful, and the meals were delicious as well. One morning's breakfast was served in a glass-walled area where the garden looked like a painting—I could have gazed at it forever. After sweating profusely climbing up to Konpira-san’s inner shrine and returning exhausted, soaking in the bath felt absolutely amazing. Since I spent so much time outside during my stay, if there’s anything I didn’t fully enjoy this time around, I’d love to visit again someday. Thank you very much!
