    Your First Charcoal Shop

    As expected of Sumiya, one of Kyoto’s three most renowned Ryokan. I was satisfied in every way. If you request it, you can also use the large public bath. When staying in Kyoto, it’s well worth considering.

    We were able to go out again this year.

    I fully enjoyed the summer setting in my favorite “Izutsu” room. Next time, I’ll visit in winter. I’m looking forward to spending quiet, relaxing time at Sumiya Ryokan, surrounded by crisp air. Thank you very much.

    Be impressed by our summer decor

    Despite being located in a lively part of town, the property felt like a different world—wrapped in serene tranquility. The cool breeze drifting through the reed doors and the pleasantly textured ajiro weaving, which I experienced for the first time, deeply moved me as part of Japan’s beautiful “summer setting.” Listening to the gentle sound of the shishi-odoshi echoing through the impeccably kept garden and spending time in the dignified tea room were truly luxurious moments that soothed my soul. The food and drinks were also exceptional—everything felt wonderfully satisfying to all five senses. Thank you sincerely for your thoughtful touches throughout. It became a wonderful summer memory, and my first visit back to Kyoto in a while was made even more special.

    Disappointing

    As this is a well-known Ryokan with good Reviews, I chose to stay there, but I was disappointed with both the hospitality and the meals. It was as hot as a summer day when I checked in, yet the hand towel provided was piping hot. The tea served with it tasted weak and stale. The rice at breakfast was far too soft, which was disappointing. Perhaps they make it softer in the morning to be easier to digest, but if so, I think porridge would have been better. The service also felt inconsistent; even when I asked for something, it didn’t go smoothly and left me tired. The staff seemed friendly when chatting among themselves, but their expressions toward guests felt rather sharp. It reminded me again that good service should be friendly, kind, and easy to understand. In addition, there were noises above the kitchen until late at night in my Room, and I didn’t sleep well.

    A space that feels like stepping back in time

    I realized I had been assuming I’d enjoyed great food in many places without truly knowing the essence of Japanese cuisine. In the Room adorned with calligraphy by Heihachiro Togo, and with the garden view through bamboo blinds, I felt as if I were living 100 years ago. I enjoyed the Room so much that I didn’t even go out to see the cherry blossoms at night. Thank you for letting me experience what felt like the most “Kyoto” Kyoto has to offer.

    Stay at a home-like Accommodation in Kyoto for Lunar New Year’s Day!

    This was my first overnight stay in exactly four months, and I was able to relax at ease, as if I had returned home on New Year’s Day of the lunar calendar. In the season when spring begins to arrive, surrounded by seasonal flowers that herald early spring, I enjoyed a kaiseki dinner served in beautiful dishes filled with my favorite foods, accompanied by “Sumiya chilled sake.” After the meal, I was also invited to a moonlit tea ceremony in remembrance of previous generations—thank you very much. The next morning, welcomed by the gentle sunlight of early spring, I enjoyed a morning bath soaking in a Koyamaki-wood tub; then, beer in hand after bathing, I savored a morning drink while gazing at the winter garden and indulged in a luxurious Kyoto-vegetable breakfast. Thank you.

    Stayed during New Year's.

    We enjoyed a New Year's decoration and cuisine befitting the name of a long-established inn. The essence of tea ceremony was felt throughout, embodying the spirit of "simple yet sufficient." The hospitality was not overly formal, and we were able to relax while hearing about daily life in Kyoto. However, one suggestion would be to provide cloth towels in the washbasin area as it is separate from the bathroom.

    As expected, an excellent charcoal shop.

    It had been a long time since our last stay, but this time we chose a day with an evening tea ceremony and visited with my husband. We enjoyed hearing various stories about the history of the building from the hostess. The room was a Japanese-style room, and although I usually have trouble sleeping on futons, it seems they use very high-quality bedding as I was able to sleep soundly on a futon at a Japanese-style ryokan for the first time. Both dinner and breakfast were truly delicious, providing much-needed relaxation from daily fatigue. Even though we live within walking distance, we would love to visit again.

    It was surprisingly quiet for being in the city.

    Every year during this season, I stay in Kyoto to enjoy the autumn leaves. I choose a traditional Ryokan in the bustling downtown area to savor the meals and atmosphere of the Ryokan. Staying at Suiran Ryokan was just as I expected, with its thoughtful design and excellent hospitality providing a relaxing experience. Despite being a historic building, it is well-maintained, allowing me to spend a pleasant time. I will visit again.

    This is the quintess...

    This is the quintessential Kyoto accommodation! Upon being shown to the room, I was delighted to find the bath already filled with warm water. The meals were delightful Kyoto cuisine, both in taste and presentation. The rice was specially grown using organic farming methods—delicious! Of course, you can enjoy your meal leisurely in your room. I also had the chance to visit a famous tea room.

    Everything is excellent.

    I arrived early and felt a bit apologetic about leaving my luggage, but the young hostess greeted me with a refreshing smile. The traditional Sukiya-style architecture is beautifully maintained and exudes cleanliness. Last year, I noticed the toilet lock was slightly loose, but this year it had been properly repaired—truly impressive attention to detail. The highlight is undoubtedly the cuisine. It’s not just visually stunning but also makes you feel grateful to be in Japan. The dishes reflect Kyoto's deep respect for nature’s bounty and the spirit of minimizing waste, offering a profound sense of Japanese culture. Being able to enjoy such exquisite meals and then rest immediately after is pure bliss. The cypress bath is wonderful, and this year I had the chance to experience the Tsukigama bath as well—a truly special experience (the coffered ceiling and small garden courtyard are remarkable). I understand this Ryokan has its roots in tea ceremony traditions. While I may not fully grasp its essence yet, even as an amateur, I could sense that spirit alive here. If you love Japan’s traditional culture, you’ll find countless unforgettable experiences here. Over recent years of traveling to Kyoto, my desire to stay at Sumiya again has only grown stronger.

    I felt at home and had a relaxing stay!

    A stay for the fourth time in just a year felt like returning home, allowing us to relax at ease. In a Room imbued with the spirit of tea ceremony, we enjoyed kaiseki cuisine paired with "Tsumaya Reishu" alongside seasonal autumn ingredients. Thank you for inviting us to the moon-viewing tea gathering after dinner. Despite being in the heart of Kyoto, we cherished the ancient city's breeze and relished a serene and luxurious morning listening to the sound of water flowing in the garden. Starting our day warmed by a bath made from Koya-maki wood and nourished by a healthy breakfast featuring Kyoto vegetables was truly delightful. Thank you!

    It was blissful.

    I initially considered staying at a Business Hotel since I was traveling alone, but I decided to stay here instead. Although I felt a bit nervous as it seemed too luxurious for me, from the moment I stepped in, I was warmly welcomed and had the most relaxing stay. The polished wooden hallways, staircases, and courtyard were pristine and gave me a refreshing sense of peace. The bath in the room was already prepared with warm water when I arrived, which deeply impressed me. (The soothing scent of cypress wood was truly calming.) Dinner was served dish by dish directly to my room. The seasonal fish and vegetables were not only visually stunning but also incredibly flavorful and nourishing. To the proprietress, staff members who attended to me, and those who prepared such wonderful meals—thank you for recharging my energy! I feel ready to tackle tomorrow with renewed strength!

At Sumiyoshi Ryokan, however, the head chef offers captivating cuisine even during the challenging summer season for ingredients. Kyoto's summer cuisine is not just about hamo (pike conger). Each time you dine here, you'll be impressed by the chef's talent and profound knowledge of Kyoto cuisine.

    "Glad I chose 'Sumiyano Guest'!"

    It had been a while since my last visit. During this stay, I had two sets of visitors. One of them came to apologize to me. While I won’t go into details here, the accommodation made me feel as if I were the true "master of the house," naturally and strongly supporting me in front of my guests. After handling an important visit, I enjoyed a delicious meal in my room as usual and attended a tea ceremony in the tearoom during the evening. The next day, a local friend from Kyoto who is knowledgeable about tea ceremonies visited me. They were deeply impressed by being able to enter this historic accommodation associated with Urasenke and showed great interest in its interior design—more than I had expected. For me, without even thinking about such things, it’s all about how delicious the meals are! How perfectly comfortable the pillows are! The way they prioritize guest comfort over appearances by placing air conditioning throughout each part of the room! That’s why I keep coming back—it’s so comfortable here that perhaps it’s like "casting pearls before swine" for someone like me! Still, I'll definitely return again for those meals and pillows!

    An exceptional and luxurious experience.

    I was nervous upon arrival, but the staff provided exceptionally courteous service from check-in to farewell. Despite being located in the city center with many tourists, the Room was quiet and allowed for a relaxing stay. The meals were outstanding. Served in the Room, each seasonal dish was carefully explained, making for an enjoyable conversation and an absolutely delicious experience. The Room was clean, and the bath was comfortable. Both the Room attendant and the hostess were kind, graceful, and wonderful. Thank you very much!

The kaiseki meal, prepared without using game meat, was truly satisfying in both quantity and quality. Thank you very much for the wonderful experience.     I had a relaxing time in the historic Room.

    I chose Sumiyoshiya Ryokan for a solo overnight stay after work, seeking a relaxing time and delicious Kyoto cuisine. My wish was fulfilled. The service provided by the room attendant was excellent and courteous. The meals were delicious, with flavors that highlighted the natural taste of the ingredients. It would have been nice to have a menu available. While the cleanliness was impeccable, it was unfortunate that the veranda carpet and slippers appeared worn out. There was also matcha tea service, allowing me to relax until the 11:30 AM checkout time at this satisfying Ryokan. Thank you very much!

    It was a wonderful time.

    This was our first stay at this accommodation, and everything from the service to the room and cuisine was exceptional. The staff were attentive yet approachable, and the lady who assisted us showed great attention to detail and shared delightful conversations with us. Thanks to her, my spouse and I had a truly wonderful time. Thank you so much. The room had a charming Kyoto-style ambiance that we loved. The bath, in particular, with its soothing aroma of Japanese cypress (Koya-maki), was so relaxing that I ended up using it three times! As for the cuisine, from appetizers to dessert over approximately two and a half hours, every dish was incredibly delicious and left us deeply impressed—it felt like time flew by! We would love to visit again during another season for a more leisurely stay. Thank you very much!

    The excellence of hospitality

    The lady who assisted us appeared to be a young woman, but she provided us with meticulous attention. Although we had informed them in advance about my mother-in-law's leg condition, they not only prepared a table seat for us but also added extra mattresses to the futon to make it easier for her to get up in the morning, which was a truly satisfying hospitality. We also troubled them by requesting to change ingredients we were not fond of in the dishes, but thanks to their efforts, we were able to enjoy our meal. If we have the opportunity, we would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    Kyoto Gosanke

    Thank you very much for your hospitality. I thoroughly enjoyed the "wabi-sabi" of the Kyoto Gosanke, including the service and cuisine. I especially felt that the cuisine was excellent. The farewell greetings from the proprietress and the staff left a lasting impression. One thing, it was unfortunate that there was no courtyard garden because the Room was on the second floor. I look forward to meeting you again during my next visit to the grave.

    A property where you can enjoy the flavors of autumn.

    Dinner began with a conversation with the Room attendant who always welcomes us with a warm smile. The appetizer included snow crab, and the exquisite toro was sandwiched in the hassun. Everything was delicious, but the matsutake rice and the persimmon dessert were especially delightful...! I'll visit again!

    We made very good memories.

    I stayed with my 91-year-old mother. Since it is a prestigious Ryokan, we were initially nervous, but the attendant was very kind in guiding us and talking with us, which made both my mother and I very satisfied. The dishes were full of seasonal flavors, the seasoning was elegant, and everything was delicious and visually pleasing. At the end of the meal, before our departure, we were served matcha, which was also delicious. My mother and I are talking about wanting to stay here again next time.

    Completely satisfied with the moment that felt like living in Kyoto!

    Everything allowed us to enjoy a time as if we were living in Kyoto. Additionally, after a colorful dinner centered around autumn ingredients, we were invited to the moon tea ceremony held twice a month (on the 7th and 17th), allowing us to savor a luxurious atmosphere. I definitely want to choose a different season for my next visit! Thank you for taking care of us.
