    A Cup of Free-Flowing Onsen Water

    I made a Reservation at this Onsen Accommodation I’d been curious about for some time. Only the cheapest Room was available; it was dark and a bit small, but the private open-air bath with free-flowing hot spring water was excellent. There are also about three reservable private open-air baths, each secluded and wonderfully rustic. You can enjoy stunning views and great hot springs. There’s a large indoor bath as well as an open-air bath—both spacious. It’s truly an Onsen paradise, with everything fed by free-flowing spring water. As expected of Miyanoshita, this area has an abundant supply of hot spring water. Meals are served in the Room, and both the quantity and taste were very good. Next time, I’d like to stay in a larger, higher-priced Room.

    This was my first stay here. The Room was clean, with a great view, and when I looked down from the open-air bath I could see the mountain railway tracks; when a train passed by, I could hear the clattering sound, which added to the atmosphere. However, it felt inconvenient that the bath and washbasin area were separate and required passing through the Room. I also wished there had been a shower hook at a lower height, and that the bathtub had been a bit larger. The meals were delicious, but the champagne we requested during meal preparation arrived late—only after several dishes had already been served—so if it was going to take time, I would have liked to be informed at the start. We also enjoyed having tea sweets in the Room as something to look forward to as souvenirs, but they weren’t available in the shop, which was disappointing.

    The Onsen water qual...

    The Onsen water quality was excellent, and the private open-air bath had a wonderful natural atmosphere. However, as mentioned in Reviews, the staff guidance was somewhat lacking, and I felt uncomfortable walking barefoot in the hallway. The suite Room was spacious with a great view from the terrace, and the futon bedding was very comfortable.

    We’re sorry to hear that.

    It was my first time back in Hakone in a while, hoping to relax in the Onsen. When I was shown to my Room, I was shocked—it got no sunlight at all and felt like it was surrounded by stone walls, with no view and completely dark. Of course, the open-air bath in the Room was also pitch-dark. Since this wasn’t clear from the Room information provided in advance, I honestly felt it should have been discounted. It turned into a disappointing trip.

    Overall, it was an old Ryokan. It was during a holiday period, so the staff were likely very busy, but I felt the in-Room meal service could have been handled more smoothly. However, they were friendly and worked hard to provide good service.

    Birthday

    We stayed one night at Horai during my birthday month. The proprietress kindly prepared a flower arrangement in our Room, and we truly appreciated her thoughtful gesture. Perhaps because the Facility is old, the bathtub in the Room wouldn’t fill with hot water, one TV was broken, and two hair dryers were also out of order. However, both the large public bath and the open-air bath were spacious and very relaxing, and we enjoyed delicious meals. The Room had a kotatsu and two separate spaces, which made it convenient to use, and it was nice and easy to spend time inside the Accommodation without slippers. The private bath was also free of charge, so we could soak for a long time. We were a bit worried because there were some negative Reviews, but overall there were no major issues and it was a good stay.

    I stayed for one night with my parents and we were able to relax in a quiet, peaceful setting. Because my parents are elderly, we chose the small-portion meal Plan, and it was delicious and very satisfying.

    Cleanliness needs improvement.

    We stayed as a group of six spanning three generations. The meals were outstanding above all else. This time, we stayed in a spacious VIP Room. I think the food was truly top-class. However, the Facility is quite aged and clearly in need of maintenance. The windows in every Room were left dirty. Mold could be seen on the walls in many places. Small issues like burnt-out night lights were also disappointing. As things stand, it would be difficult for us to return. It’s a shame, because the food was delicious and the staff were very pleasant.

    Family-friendly, with exceptional hospitality

    We stayed here on a weekend of heavy snowfall so severe that the Hakone Tozan Railway was suspended. As noted in the title, our overwhelming impression was that this Accommodation is exceptionally welcoming for families with children. We requested a children’s meal, and it was so lavish it could rival an adult’s—truly impressive. It was wonderful to see our child happily eating. In the shared private open-air Onsen, they had thoughtfully provided a baby bed and children’s soap, so even kids (and babies) can enjoy the Onsen with peace of mind. Both dinner and breakfast were served in our Room, which allowed us to relax and enjoy our meals even with a child. Since dining at a restaurant for an extended time is often difficult with kids, being able to calmly enjoy a full-course meal as a couple was such a treat. Lastly, as mentioned at the beginning, there were issues due to the weather—including the suspension of the Hakone Tozan Railway—but we greatly appreciated how flexibly they supported us, such as keeping us updated by contacting our Room from the front desk with the latest information. The Room also had a lovely hinoki bath, but we did find the changing area somewhat cold. Although there was a circulating room heater installed, it didn’t seem to be working…? That said, since there was also air conditioning and a kotatsu in the Room, we didn’t feel too cold overall.

    Accommodation with private Onsen and delicious seasonal cuisine

    The accommodation offers abundant onsen options, including a large public bath, family baths, and private open-air baths, all available 24 hours—a great choice for onsen enthusiasts. Due to my mobility issues, I used a room with a small private open-air bath and the family bath. It had been over 15 years since my last visit, so it was nostalgic to stay here again. With age, I noticed the lack of handrails in the bathing areas made it slightly inconvenient. The meals were seasonal and beautifully prepared; everything was delicious. However, likely due to staff shortages common everywhere these days, the entire Japanese course meal was served within about an hour. I wished I could have enjoyed such wonderful food at a more leisurely pace. While some parts of the ryokan show signs of aging and lack repairs, the reception service and cleanliness were satisfactory overall. There seemed to be many foreign guests staying as well.

    New Year's Trip with Family

    Since my grandchild is in the crawling stage and cannot move freely in our usual Hotel, we decided to visit Hakone from New Year's Day for the first time in a while. The building is old, and the food is average, but that's understandable during the New Year season. Surprisingly, the Room's bath had a hidden hot spring feel which was nice, and we also enjoyed having a kotatsu.

    The food was delicious, but we would have appreciated more attention to the Facility.

    We stayed for one night and two days as a family of four. The dinner featured a variety of creative dishes, so delicious and abundant that we couldn't finish them all. Breakfast also offered unique and tasty dishes not found in everyday life. However, the building seemed to be old-fashioned; the toilet seat in our private Room was not heated. Even after checking with the staff, it couldn't be fixed, which was particularly uncomfortable for my family members who are all women except me. The changing rooms in both the men's and women's baths were cold, and the men's bath itself was chilly as well. It was hard to endure while washing up, so I quickly got into the tub to warm up. The private bath also felt cold according to others in my group. If these issues were improved, it might have been a 5-star experience!

    There is an issue with the bedding.

    Every time I stay at the accommodation, I inform them that a single thin futon causes back pain when lying on my back and shoulder pain when lying on my side, making it difficult to sleep. The duvet is small, and when lying on my back, my feet stick out from the bottom. When I mentioned this to the staff, they said, "This has been our futon for years. Why not tell the front desk upon checkout?" I have brought this up every time I visit, but there has been no improvement. Honestly, it remains unresolved each time I stay here, and I cannot sleep properly.

    I enjoyed the pure essence of Japanese tradition after a long time.

    An accommodation I had always wanted to visit. I enjoyed the relaxing onsen, dining in the room, and above all, the warm hospitality of the hostess and staff. I look forward to visiting again when I have time.

    Celebrating the 80th Birthday

    We celebrated my mother's 80th birthday with a girls' trip. The free private Onsen was wonderful. The quality of the Onsen was excellent, warming us to the core without causing dizziness even after a long soak. Since we stayed in a corner Room, we could enjoy the autumn leaves from various angles in the Room. There was also a kotatsu, making our stay very comfortable. My mother was overjoyed, and we created beautiful memories together. Thank you very much!

    For the first time in 30 years

    I stayed here 30 years ago with my two elementary school-aged sons. The Room has aged, but it now has a charming atmosphere that made our stay very relaxing. The meals were all excellent and extremely satisfying. Both the private bath and the regular bath were clean and pleasant. This is a Ryokan I would love to visit again with my family someday.

    The food was absolutely delicious. We were very satisfied with the elaborate kaiseki dishes. Additionally, we stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, and the atmosphere of the Room was excellent. Even though we had a baby with us, we were able to stay without any inconvenience. Thank you very much!

    I stayed at the acco...

    I stayed at the accommodation with my 1.5-year-old daughter. The female staff who served our meals was incredibly kind. She remembered my daughter's name and called out to her many times. My daughter was overjoyed and even followed the staff to the serving room. Although my daughter is usually shy around people and unfamiliar places, thanks to the kind staff, she didn’t cry even once during our stay! After checking out, while waiting for a taxi in the lobby, that same staff member came by to say goodbye. Thank you so much for your warm hospitality! I look forward to staying again and seeing you next time!

    We stayed with our two grandchildren, two daughters, and my husband. Both dinner and breakfast were served in the room, allowing us to relax completely. The special menu prepared for the pregnant member of our group was very thoughtful and much appreciated. The attention to detail was heartwarming. The Onsen was wonderful, and we loved that there were three private baths available for free use. We would definitely love to stay again! The greenery visible from the window was also beautiful.     Despite having a private open-air bath.

    We stayed in a room with an open-air bath and were looking forward to enjoying the natural hot spring, but in the morning, the water was too lukewarm to enter. It was not possible to increase the water flow or make it hotter. We were very disappointed as we had been looking forward to using the open-air bath in our room. The floorboards leading to the open-air bath were damaged, which felt unsafe. The meals were beautifully presented and delicious. During breakfast, we were served porridge, but it felt insufficient; much later, we were asked if we wanted white rice. Both of us requested it but wished they had asked from the beginning. The large public bath was excellent.

    Everything felt outdated, and the bathroom lacked a sense of cleanliness. For some reason, the water pressure was weak everywhere, making both the toilet and shower inconvenient to use. The food was mediocre. The staff were pleasant, but their service was average.

    This was my second visit.

    We visited for the second time in summer after enjoying our stay during winter. I went with my husband and our 2-year-old daughter. The private open-air Onsen was a bit hot but still very nice. The Room's bath was also great, and the meals were delicious—our daughter loved them and ate a lot. The staff were friendly and kind to our daughter; thank you so much for that. We hope to visit again around autumn!

    It was excellent.

    The shuttle service from Miyanoshita was prompt and convenient. While some reviews mentioned negative aspects, we experienced no issues at all. The ryokan staff were all very pleasant, especially the young foreign female staff member who was exceptionally friendly and wonderful. The baths offered a variety of options and were very relaxing. This ryokan truly embodies the best of traditional Japanese hospitality.

    I have used this place multiple times. I am satisfied with the Room, food, and bath. However, it was disappointing that traditional Japanese sweets and other items were no longer available at the shop.
