    Kawadoko (Riverside Dining)

    A summer trip to Kyoto often involves dining on a riverside platform, and after debating between the city platforms or those in Kibune and Takao, I decided on Takao for my first riverside dining experience. Although I was concerned about rising water levels due to the rain from the previous day, it turned out to be an enjoyable trip with a meal in a scenic location, Maiko dances, and commemorative photos. However, I noticed some hair left in the accommodation room, which made me feel that cleaning was not thorough enough. Therefore, I rated it 4 stars.

    Cost-effectiveness

    ① Being a Ryokan in the mountains, cleanliness was lacking. 【2 points】 ② The male staff at the front desk was kind, but the female staff had a bad attitude. 【3 points】 ③ The open-air bath with a view of the garden was nice, but cleanliness was lacking. 【3 points】 ④ Room lighting remote control did not work; phone and refrigerator seemed 20 years old; no safe for valuables. 【2 points】 ⑤ Meals were average. 【3 points】 For a price of over 30,000 yen per person, it does not meet average standards. There were hardly any Japanese guests, so perhaps this is no longer a destination for Japanese tourists? I wanted to experience dining on the riverbed once, so in that sense, I am somewhat satisfied.

    It was a great experience.

    I recently stayed at Kawano-an, a separate building of Momijiya. Located in a quiet riverside area, the room offered beautiful views of the river, which was very soothing. Especially in the morning, waking up to the sound of the flowing river and birdsong allowed me to forget the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy peaceful moments. The room was clean, comfortable, and had a wonderful traditional Japanese atmosphere. The staff were very kind and provided attentive hospitality. The meals were made with fresh local ingredients and were all delicious. The dinner especially showcased seasonal flavors with beautifully presented dishes that were also visually enjoyable. The bath was relaxing and helped relieve my tired body completely. Overall, it was an excellent accommodation where I could feel Japan's traditional hospitality. I would love to visit again if I have another opportunity!

    Following the summer,

    I visited to enjoy riverbed cuisine in the summer. I thought the autumn foliage season would be very beautiful, so I stayed again. The area around the property was filled with colorful autumn leaves, and I enjoyed the scenery. In summer, it didn't bother me, but this time there was something that did. I chose a room with an open-air bath, but the washing area in front was cold and troublesome. Recently, there are not a few properties where shower rooms can also control temperature. It was cold both before and after taking a bath, which is tough for older people like me. Also, the air conditioning in the bedroom wasn't working well. The food was delicious and the service was courteous; other than that, I was satisfied.

    A renowned hidden inn to enjoy a secluded retreat

    Climbing National Route 162, passing the main building of Takao Sanso, turning onto Prefectural Route 138 at Makinono, passing through a toll parking lot, and driving along a narrow road by the Kiyotaki River where cars can barely pass each other, you will see the inn at the bottom of the steep stairs leading to Jingoji Temple. You park along the road further in. Crossing the suspension bridge exclusive to the inn, you reach the reception at the front. The annex and detached buildings are scattered on the lush mountainside. The area is modestly lit from the slope to the river surface. You move around the premises by climbing up and down stone steps and steep concrete paths. It might be a bit tough for guests in rainy weather or those using canes. The recently renovated detached building resembles a mountain house, with a room with a table, a bedroom with a bed, and a round ceramic open-air bath on the veranda. The open-air bath, maintained at a suitable temperature 24/7, is connected to a shower room. Although surrounded by forest, surprisingly few insects come. You can hear the sounds of insects and the river, but it's quiet when you close the sash windows. It's a comfortable room. At the designated time, you descend to the riverside hut where meals begin simultaneously. Small tables and chairs facing each other are lined along the river. The dishes are already set, and a single stove is lit at the right timing. Alcoholic beverages are served without delay. As the sun sets and the lighting becomes more prominent, it turns into a magical world. As the meal is mostly finished, a beautiful maiko arrives, visiting each table and finally performing on a stage set on the floor. The inn's staff takes commemorative photos for you. When you return to your room, it's quiet at night. The lighting among the trees is like a dream. Breakfast is served in the spacious room on the second floor of the annex, Kawa no An, with tables and chairs arranged comfortably. In season, the view of the garden's maple trees below is splendid. We were with a few quiet foreign couples. Both on arrival and departure, they helped carry our heavy luggage from the room to the parking lot across the river.
