    The top Accommodation in Yumura Onsen

    I had been wanting to visit Yumura Onsen, and I made a Reservation here after hearing it was the best Accommodation in the area. The Room we stayed in included a renovated Western-style room and was clean, but because there was no washing area or shower, having to wash and bathe in the bathroom next to the entrance was extremely inconvenient. The Facility has a retro Showa-era feel and shows its age, but it seemed to be properly cleaned. As for the meals, I may have expected too much since they were said to be supervised by “Iron Chef” (a long time ago). Honestly, my home cooking tastes better. Breakfast in particular looked lavish, but once you started eating it, pre-made items like kinpira stood out. If they are only included to make up the numbers, I think it would be better not to include them at all. For people who dislike leaving food behind, being forced to eat food that isn’t good is very unpleasant. I considered using the karaoke room, but at 4,400 yen per hour it was too expensive so I didn’t. There isn’t anything noteworthy around this location; I wanted to relax slowly, but the TV in the Room was an older model and couldn’t stream on-demand content these days. Combined with the bath situation mentioned above, I couldn’t really unwind—so I ended up with nothing to do and went to bed early. It was relatively inexpensive at around 60,000 yen for two people so I wasn’t angry about it, but I wouldn’t stay again. Nor would I recommend it to others. I think you should reconsider and improve the food offerings.

    While the meals and Facility were great, the Room and service were disappointing.

    This was my first stay here. With the high Review ratings and its reputation as a long-established Ryokan, I was really looking forward to it. However, after arriving, I found many aspects of the service and the Room condition disappointing. First, the explanations and hospitality from the staff member who escorted us to our Room were honestly very different from what I expected from a long-established Ryokan. We were hurried to the Room without any guidance such as a welcome drink. The explanation about the Accommodation was hard to hear, and I had to ask several times. There was also almost no explanation about the Room itself. Then, the moment we entered, there was a strong musty smell like mold, which shocked me. I opened the window for ventilation when we went out, but when we returned the smell had hardly improved. As I gradually started feeling irritation in my throat, I requested a change of Room. The new Room had no issues; however, in the first Room there was also white discoloration on ceiling panels that looked like mold. I could not understand why guests would be placed in a Room in that condition. I would like you to check Rooms before guests arrive. I was very satisfied with both the Facility and the meals. That is exactly why it was so disappointing that both the service and initial Room condition fell short. Even after this stay, my throat has not returned to normal and I still feel concerned about my health. Of course, I cannot say for certain that there is a direct connection between my throat symptoms and the odor in the Room, but because I had been looking forward to this trip so much, it is truly regrettable that I could not fully enjoy it. As a long-established Ryokan, I hope you will improve not only your Facility and meals but also your hospitality when welcoming guests and your checks of each Room. I am writing this candidly in hopes it will be helpful for future guests.

    This Hotel is highly recommended.

    Whenever I visit Yumura Onsen, I always stay here. The staff are kind, the food is delicious, and I always leave satisfied. This time, I rated the Facility amenities 4 stars because the white towels in the bath area felt very linty. Perhaps they were over-dried or old—when I dried my hair, it felt like towel lint stuck to it. The towels in the washroom were the same. Other than that, it’s a truly wonderful Hotel and highly recommended.

    Obon Holiday Season

    In some areas, the Facility felt old, and I was bothered by an odor. They didn’t help carry our luggage, and when asked whether the staff service—such as guidance in the parking lot—was good, I have many doubts. The meals were delicious. The bath also felt old, and I was a bit concerned about cleanliness. Since the water temperature is on the hot side, I would like a cold bath as well.

    It was a hot trip.

    I stayed at Izutsuya again for the first time in decades. When I was younger, I went to Yumura Onsen by car with coworkers on what we called a summer trip, and as the organizer I chose Izutsuya because the Onsen and cuisine looked excellent. I don’t remember much from back then, but I clearly remembered the food and baths, and this time as well we enjoyed delicious meals and the Onsen just as before. However, since we visited during an extremely hot midsummer period, the strong sun and Arayu left us a bit tired. Next time, I’d love to come when the courtyard has an autumn feel. Thank you very much for your hospitality. The attendants were also very polite and attentive, so aside from the heat it was a wonderful trip.

    Lost...

    We visited as a family of three. At check-in, my husband and child (not me) were taken “this way” and served tea and sweets. I wanted them to hear the detailed explanation of the facilities together with me during check-in, so I wish they hadn’t been taken away. My husband also said he wanted to Reserve a massage, so I had to call him back to the front desk again. The Hotel layout was complicated, and we got lost several times. I think it would help to have more floor maps on the walls showing “You are here.” Other than that, the staff and breakfast were excellent. The staff member seeing us off kept waving until the end, which made me very happy. I’d love to visit again!

    A convenient Accommodation tailored to your needs

    Last time, we enjoyed the Plan with dinner and breakfast, so this time we chose the breakfast-only Plan and ate at the izakaya in the Hotel. The food and drinks we ordered came out quickly, and everything was delicious. If you want to relax at the Hotel, a Plan with dinner is ideal. If you just want to enjoy the Onsen casually, using the izakaya is a great option. I also liked being able to choose what suits your stay.

    Wonderful, long-established Ryokan

    No matter when you visit, the Onsen is wonderful. The scenic hinoki bath has a great view. The large public bath in the basement is spacious and relaxing, and with two private hot spring sources, there’s plenty of water and it’s free-flowing. Breakfast was included, with lots of side dishes that go perfectly with rice. I stayed in a single Room; the Room was nice, but the bathroom area feels a bit dated. The Ryokan as a whole is old, but it’s well cleaned and well maintained. The staff are also very polite and pleasant. If you come to Yumura, this place is the only choice—this time I traveled solo, but next time I’d like to come with my wife.

    A long-established Ryokan with its own free-flowing natural hot spring source

    We were looking for an Accommodation near A Onsen for our wedding anniversary, and happened to find Izutsuya on IKYU at a very reasonable price, so we booked immediately. They kindly accommodated an early check-in, which really helped as I was feeling slightly unwell from the heat at Arayu. The furnishings and garden were exactly what you would expect from a long-established ryokan—an unhurried, relaxing space that made us forget everyday life—and thanks to the excellent hospitality skills of all the staff, we had a very comfortable stay. (The non-Japanese staff member’s fluent Japanese and graceful manner were especially impressive.) We also enjoyed the meals; the portions were just right. Breakfast was a Japanese set meal rather than a buffet, which we appreciated. They even served sekihan for our anniversary in bite-sized portions, and it was delicious. The baths were another reason we chose this Accommodation: there is an open-air bath underground as well as a stone sauna. The large public bath underground has different themes and is switched between men and women, while the rooftop hinoki bath is not very large and does not rotate. However, we were told that the rooftop bath uses free-flowing water directly from their private source, with temperature adjusted using cooler spring water (discarded overflow). As Onsen lovers, we rate this kind of true free-flowing spring water very highly. Our Room did not seem to be fully non-smoking, but perhaps because they had already turned on an air purifier, we had no issues despite not feeling 100% due to mild heat exhaustion. Towels are stocked in the bathing area so you can use them freely without hesitation. There was also complimentary draft beer in the rooftop post-bath lounge area, plus jelly dessert and green tea service in the post-bath area by the underground large public bath. We almost missed it, but learned there is a guided tour—led by the proprietress—of “Rakuan,” a separate villa where Their Majesties stayed (the Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita), so we joined before checkout. It became a truly memorable trip. If we have a chance to return, next time I’d like to try their “Senior Plan,” which I didn’t notice on IKYU before—and experience the private bath as well.

    We were very satisfied with the bath.

    The Onsen baths were wonderful, and since there were several, we were able to enjoy many of them, including the private bath and the one in our room. Also—perhaps it was just by chance—there were hardly any foreign guests at the Accommodation, or even in Yumura Onsen itself. At other Onsen areas, I have occasionally seen visitors with different lifestyle habits and, to be honest, have felt uncomfortable at times. So it was very nice to be able to relax and enjoy the Onsen without that kind of experience. Even though this is such a great Onsen area and a great Accommodation, is it because access is a bit inconvenient that it was mostly Japanese guests? Dinner was extremely satisfying in both quality and quantity. However, having only two options for the dinner start time—6:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.—was a bit tough. Is this due to staff scheduling? I wished there had been an option from 7:00 p.m., at least (we normally don’t eat dinner in the 6 o’clock hour). As for breakfast, we felt it was too salty overall. Since it’s a traditional Japanese breakfast, that may be unavoidable, but doesn’t it exceed the recommended daily salt intake from breakfast alone (both my spouse and I work in healthcare)? It was also a little disappointing that there was no fruit at all to help promote sodium excretion. We would like to visit again in search of such wonderful Onsen baths.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    This was our first stay at Izutsuya, and we truly enjoyed it. The meals were delicious, and we were able to relax in the baths.\nAll of the staff were very pleasant.\nWe were also upgraded to a better Room, and it felt like a waste to stay only one night—we would have loved a Multiple Night Stay.\nWe would love to visit again.

    Exceptional hospitality

    I stayed here for the first time during Golden Week. Every staff member was smiling and worked efficiently, which made the stay very pleasant. All of the dishes we were served were outstanding. From start to finish, every course was thoughtfully prepared. We also thoroughly enjoyed the baths. We would love to visit again. If possible, I would appreciate an 11:00 a.m. checkout—so I’m giving four stars with that in mind.

    Dinner was average, including the presentation and ingredients. Breakfast, honestly, felt far too careless. The bath was excellent. After all, isn’t the food a key part of an Onsen Ryokan? But breakfast… that was unacceptable.

    For the price, this is what you get??? Dinner was underwhelming, and the kids’ menu was especially disappointing. Eating in an open space with children meant we had to be mindful of others and couldn’t relax and enjoy our meal. We went to unwind, but ended up even more tired.

    A celebration of four mature women’s 70th birthdays

    Although the weather was unfortunately rainy, it was a fun and memorable trip. When visiting Yumura Onsen, we always choose “Izutsuya,” and my friends were absolutely delighted and fully satisfied. The meals were delicious, with generous portions and a great variety—we were completely full. They even dressed us in celebratory red vests for a photo—pose! We thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen and the post-bath relaxation area, soaking many times. The next day, we also tried making Onsen eggs and Onsen sweet potatoes, and took another photo with Yumekiyo—pose! We also used the Shuttle Service, and the driver was wonderful as well. Thank you for taking such good care of us. Thank you very much.

    The Onsen was very relaxing and enjoyable.

    We stayed at a great last-minute rate. Because it was inexpensive, we were a little worried about the meals and the Room, but those concerns were completely unfounded. The Room was spacious and overlooked the courtyard, and we could enjoy our meals while looking out at the beautiful garden with a waterfall flowing in the morning and evening. The food tasted great; there was almost too much udon and rice with the sukiyaki, but we enjoyed everything all the way to the final pudding. The free-flowing Onsen was definitely comfortable! The 7th-floor panoramic bath had a hinoki-wood tub throughout with a pleasant feel on the skin, and both the indoor bath and open-air bath in the large public bath were spacious—we truly enjoyed the Onsen.     Guest Satisfaction at a Large Ryokan

    I finally visited Yumura Onsen, a place I had long wanted to stay. Choosing an Accommodation was difficult, but I decided on Itsuzuya because the Reviews were very positive. I stayed two nights in a special Room. The Room and the open-air Onsen bath were satisfying. However, the meals were underwhelming. This is common at large Ryokan, but before we even sat down, small plates of sashimi and similar items were already set out on the table. They were covered with paper to prevent drying out, but it still took away from the experience. Some dishes were good, but overall the flavors were just so-so. In particular, breakfast on the second day was not good. At that point, it might be worth considering a buffet instead. It may be unavoidable at a large Ryokan, but I wish they would simplify the number of dishes and serve them in order. I liked the Onsen and would like to return, though I’m not sure whether there is a better Accommodation in Yumura than this one.

    In celebration of the crab season opening

    I chose this place to enjoy a crab feast and because the Onsen seemed appealing. The meals were disappointing, but the bath was excellent! The staff provided pleasant service. I could also take a stroll to Ara-yu, which was very close by!

    It became a wonderful memory.

    Thank you for upgrading our Room. The east-facing Room offered a wonderful view of the illuminated courtyard, annex, and surrounding mountains. The meals were carefully prepared, showcasing excellent knife skills and were very delicious. It was easy to understand why the accommodation was fully booked even on weekdays during this season.

    We were able to relax and unwind as a couple.

    Right after arriving, we enjoyed the large public bath on the rooftop and the large public bath in the basement (the men’s and women’s sides switch, so we went in the evening and again in the morning). We also fully enjoyed the Onsen in our room bath with a hinoki cypress scent, and in our guest room with an open-air bath. We were able to relax. It was so much fun. The sukiyaki dinner and breakfast were delicious, and more plentiful than anywhere we’ve stayed before. I felt bad that we couldn’t finish everything. The sashimi before the sukiyaki dinner and each individual dish were exquisite—especially the chawanmushi! It was wonderfully delicious. We didn’t choose in-room dining, but dinner was served in a private dining room, so as a couple we could eat without worrying about anyone else. For breakfast, I went to get coffee from the buffet, but it wasn’t an issue even while passing other refined guests along the way. Come to think of it, there weren’t any large groups of foreign tourists—sorry to say this, but thanks to that we were able to spend our time relaxing without any unpleasant experiences at all. The sake after using the large public bath, along with sweets and matcha tea, was great—and everyone at the Ryokan as well as other guests were wonderful too. It felt both old and new at once—a classic Japanese Onsen experience at its best. It’s close by, so I’d like to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Dinner is not recommended. The meal was already prepared and cold, with the food hardened. While there were warm dishes like sukiyaki and tempura, it left a disappointing impression. The waitress during dinner was an unfriendly elderly woman working alone, giving off the vibe of a cheap diner rather than a Ryokan experience. The Room was old, and I got a splinter from the threshold. The bath made my hair silky smooth, which was nice. Breakfast wasn’t particularly special either, but I felt that a buffet-style dinner would have been better in comparison.

    The hospitality at this accommodation was excellent.

    The staff's attentiveness and thorough training were evident, from the warm welcome at the entrance to the guidance to the room and meal service. The dinner was luxurious, delicious, and allowed us to fully enjoy autumn flavors. The rooftop open-air bath with tatami flooring was excellent, providing a safe and comfortable experience without worries of slipping. If I had to point out a drawback, it would be that accessing the basement bath requires using stairs (though an electric chair is available), which might be challenging for those with mobility issues. Additionally, having baskets for carrying belongings to the bath would have been appreciated. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay and would love to return if given another opportunity at this accommodation.

    Thank you for your hospitality. Although we arrived before check-in time, we were allowed to park our car and enjoy sightseeing. All the staff were very polite, making our stay pleasant. My husband also said, "This place is great," and seemed very satisfied. The food was exquisite, and breakfast was so plentiful that I wondered if I could finish it all. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because adjusting the air conditioning was a bit difficult. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much!
