    Maple Shade Hermitage

This was my third stay. After arriving while it was still light out, I first enjoyed Goshobo’s semi-mixed Onsen and the large public bath with its golden Onsen. Since it was summer, even a short soak left me sweating nonstop. In the large bath, I shared the water with someone for the first time here; we had a pleasant chat and ended up soaking a bit longer. Dinner was a lighter, seafood-focused course. The chilled Awaji spiny lobster soup was a perfect match with Koshu wine. The highlight began with sashimi of meita-garei flounder and aged sea bream, followed by more Akashi-ura fish to enjoy. The charcoal-grilled Spanish mackerel and the Akashi sea bream acqua pazza were both seasonal specials you can only have here at this time of year. The broth in the acqua pazza was much lighter than last autumn’s filefish version. To finish, the cheese course left me fully satisfied in both quality and quantity—thank you for the wonderful meal. For breakfast, I switched back to the standard menu: milk, soup, vegetables—an all-around delicious plate—beautiful French toast, and yogurt meant to savor the jam and honey. Everything tasted exactly as good as expected. Even the mini breads were great; this time, the buttery croissant was my favorite. In my Room bath, I topped up little by little while letting it cool slightly, enjoying a pleasantly lukewarm golden Onsen. The breeze through the window felt wonderful: lush greenery everywhere, distant summer skies, murmuring sounds of life outside—and cicadas loud enough not to lose to them. Summer Onsen really is something special. After breakfast I alternated between the golden Onsen and the low-temperature sauna. It was an extremely satisfying holiday stay. Thank you very much. P.S. As always, before check-in I stopped by Sabor for a Tajima-gen burger and a café au lait.

    Exceptional hospitality

I was soothed by the slow pace of time. It felt like the fatigue of everyday life just melted away. With your wonderful smiles, attentive service, and warm conversation, the comfort was truly exceptional. I’ll be back again. Thank you.

I felt relaxed again this year.

The property itself is a one-of-a-kind presence in nature. Meals begin with the head chef explaining the care and attention behind each dish. The baths—both the large public bath and the in-Room bath—feature Kinsen (golden hot spring water). The mystical large public bath is so relaxing you may drift off to sleep. They can also arrange surprises for birthdays and other occasions—you’ll be amazed!

This is a very nice accommodation.

From the moment I stepped through the entrance, I was captivated by its presence. It was calm and quiet, almost like a museum. There was a beautiful cherry tree in the courtyard.\nThe Room was a villa-style unit with the entrance on the second floor and the bedroom on the first. I could constantly hear the sound of a waterfall, which made my stay very peaceful.\nThe food was delicious, and we were able to enjoy it slowly in a private dining room. They kindly made rice balls for a late-night snack from our leftover rice, but since it was just plain rice, I thought it would have been nice to have some pickles or something to go with it.\nOther than that, this is truly a wonderful Accommodation. I would love to visit again.

An Early Spring Day at Arima Sanso Gosho Bessho

This was my second stay. It was in the building next door to last time and felt a bit more compact. More than that, I felt the taste of the Watanuki artwork displayed in the Room, as well as the bathroom layout and the view from the tub, were better during my previous stay. For dinner this time, I had the Tajima Gen course. Since everything other than Tajima Gen was fish, I enjoyed again the delicious white wine I had last time. The tempura served as a surprise before the course was an exquisite taste of early spring. The fish from Akashiura was just as wonderful as before—dishes that made the most of excellent ingredients. The broth in the clear soup was delicious and paired perfectly with the wine. The warabi mochi that didn’t absorb any broth, though—I wasn’t sure about that. I’ve also had Tajima Gen by delivery before, and once again this time I found the fat quite heavy, to the point that it left me feeling so full it affected my enjoyment of the bamboo shoot rice and dessert afterward. The bamboo shoot rice also felt like spring. It was a clay-pot rice with only cubed bamboo shoots; lightly seasoned, elegant in flavor, letting you taste even the richness of the rice itself—truly delicious. All of breakfast’s breads were excellent. Aside from the croissant they were miniature-sized, yet I was surprised they still kept that same balance between crisp exterior texture and fluffy interior. The French toast looked beautiful, and since even the baguette itself was delicious, it was outstanding. Also, perhaps because it suited such a lovely lobby so well, even the financier served at check-in tasted especially good to me. I also loved—and use every day—the wonderful zodiac-themed plate we received as a surprise. At lunch we went to your affiliated SABOR and had a Tajima Gen burger there. It became my personal best—I could really taste how it brought out all of meat’s natural umami while making full use of what makes Tajima Gen special. It was such a happy day. Thank you very much. We’ll be back again.

The cuisine is now even more delicious.

My third stay at Gosho Bessho after a long time. I was surprised at how much the food has improved—it was already delicious when I stayed about two years ago, but it’s been upgraded even further! Since it was early spring, the course featured plenty of seasonal mountain vegetables. I was especially happy to be able to enjoy so many wild plants like bracken and zenmai (royal fern), which are a hassle to prepare at home. Even with the sashimi—where you’d normally pair it with soy sauce—they served a sauce made from the fish’s liver, and for the shrimp they prepared a shrimp-based sauce as well. I was truly impressed that they put this much care into each plate. Overall, you can tell every dish is thoughtfully and carefully prepared, and every single plate was genuinely delicious. Breakfast has also leveled up—the bread and French toast were on par with specialty shops. Even at high-end Hotel breakfast venues, it’s rare to find bread dough this good—especially considering Japanese cuisine is the main focus here! It looks like the bath area has been renovated too; it felt almost ceremonial in an innovative way. Arima can be crowded, but once you step onto this property, you’re soothed by birdsong and the sound of running water. When I’m tired, I’ll come back again to Clear my mind.

    Accommodation for Adults

It was a long-awaited family trip. The rain-soaked autumn leaves and the mist rising from the back mountain were breathtakingly beautiful and magical, while the mystical atmosphere of the large public bath left a deep impression. Every detail, from tableware to everything else, was carefully curated. During meals, we received thorough explanations, and thanks to the attentive care of the staff, we were able to enjoy a relaxing stay. My husband mentioned that it felt like an ideal place for literary figures to stay for extended periods while writing. Truly, one night was not enough; it’s an accommodation where you’d want to stay for several days. This is more of an adult-oriented accommodation that can be fully appreciated at a mature age rather than with small children. Thank you so much for sending back our forgotten folding umbrella—it arrived on a rainy day and was incredibly helpful! We are truly grateful for everything!

I had a relaxing and comfortable stay.

Ten years ago, my husband and I stayed at Goshoboh and had only wonderful memories. I always hoped to revisit Arima Onsen with our child someday and stay at one of the accommodations related to Goshoboh. This time, my wish came true, and we were able to stay at Gosho Bessho as a family of three with my husband and son. We were very excited about this trip. The staff's hospitality was excellent, and the maisonette-style room was fantastic. Our elementary school-aged son also thoroughly enjoyed it. We had dinner at Goshoboh, which brought back fond memories from 10 years ago while creating even more wonderful new ones. Not only did we enjoy the private onsen in our room, but we also relaxed in the reserved bath. The Western-style breakfast was also incredibly delicious. We spent a truly happy time as a family together. If we have another chance to visit Arima Onsen again, I would love to return to one of the accommodations related to Goshoboh!

A Relaxing Getaway with Golden Hot Springs at Hermitage

We enjoyed the golden Onsen in a private room bath. The preferred temperature, a low-temperature sauna, and windows that open both above and below allowed us to stay comfortable without feeling cold or overheated. Bathing with the built-in Bose Speaker playing at high volume was an unforgettable experience that redefined our standards for Onsen satisfaction. For dinner, we had a light fish-focused course meal. Most ingredients were local specialties, including Tajima duck, autumn Spanish mackerel from Akashiura, red shrimp, scorpionfish, and clay pot rice with salted butter. The variety of flavors offered here exceeded our expectations. The exquisite scorpionfish acqua pazza paired perfectly with white wine. Dining while enjoying the softly lit autumn foliage in shades of orange and pink spreading across the night view like Monet's water lilies was truly unforgettable. Lastly, we appreciated the thoughtful handwritten letter provided to us. Thank you for Kousuke Watanuki's mystery-solving explanation as well! It was a wonderful holiday—thank you very much!

    Impressive.

The room we were guided to was different from the reserved room—a surprise. Why? During dinner, dessert was served with a lit candle. That’s when I realized—it was my birthday month. It was an accommodation that impressed me with its thoughtful attention to detail.

    It was a long-awaite...

It was a long-awaited family trip. Although it was just one night, the peaceful and unique atmosphere helped us relax and unwind from our daily fatigue. We were grateful to be allowed into the room about an hour earlier than scheduled. The bath was very mystical and wonderful. It was my daughter's birthday, and they celebrated it for her. While we were told her name would be written on a plate, they surprised us with an even cuter gesture, which made her very happy. Not only the hotel staff but also the shuttle service driver were all friendly and kind, making it a truly pleasant holiday. We look forward to visiting again!

    A delightful space

A long-admired accommodation turned out to be an even more wonderful place than imagined. The onsen was, of course, exceptional, and the interior featured Watanuki's works harmoniously blending with Arima's nature, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. The meals were made with carefully selected local ingredients and were truly delicious. The staff provided attentive service, making the stay very comfortable. I look forward to visiting again in a different season.

I was able to immerse myself in Dr. Watanuki's unique world.

From the moment you pass through the gate, you feel immersed in the world of Watanuki-sensei. The atmosphere is consistently unified throughout both the lobby and the room, making for a truly blissful experience. Having an Onsen in the room is a luxurious touch, but the sacred and serene ambiance of the large public bath was also remarkable. The cuisine was exquisite, with each dish thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented, allowing us to experience Watanuki-sensei's aesthetics through food as well. Visiting during cherry blossom season was stunning, but it seems that every season offers its own unique charm. During our stay, there was a passing rain shower; listening to the sound of raindrops on trees was so soothing that I would love to visit again during the rainy season.

    It was a relaxing accommodation.

We had a relaxing and leisurely stay, including enjoying the large public bath. The Shuttle Service to the Onsen town was also a positive point. However, it wasn't perfect due to some minor issues such as dishes being cleared too quickly during meals, staff engaging in excessive private conversations, the refrigerator not being conveniently located on the first floor for post-bath drinks, and amenities feeling inadequate for the establishment's standard.

A first-time experience with hot springs and crab.

The bath has been renovated. As if symbolizing the sacredness of Arima's Onsen, a dimly lit corridor leads to an illuminated bathhouse. The bathhouse is surrounded by a sacred rope, with a single bamboo stalk standing in the center of the tub. Immersing yourself in this precious water enhances the benefits of Kinsen, making it feel even more effective. I felt this strongly as I happened to be alone in the bathhouse. Even after leaving the bath, the warmth lingered—truly characteristic of Arima's Onsen. Notably, since there is now only one bathhouse, designated bathing times are set for women and men respectively, and after meal hours, it becomes available for private family use. Considering how special bathing in Arima Kinsen is, you might need to plan your stay at the Ryokan around these bathing times; otherwise, visiting with plans to explore the Onsen town could pose some challenges. It seems both guests and staff are still adjusting to this new system. For dinner this time, we requested crab dishes. While I've had crab from Japan Sea regions before, being able to enjoy it nearby in Arima was wonderful—it was delicious! Comparing it with past experiences from Japan Sea areas: grilled crab served hot right off the grill would have been appreciated more here as well (though I understand concerns about lingering smells at a Ryokan). The crab hot pot seemed slightly too rich for my taste. Perhaps offering dishes that reflect unique characteristics of Arima could add an extra touch—just a thought born out of indulgence!

    The hot water was excellent.

I visited Arima Onsen looking forward to enjoying the onsen, but the system that doesn't allow unlimited access at any time is disappointing. The only large bath is a private one that cannot be reserved, and even if you call the front desk in advance to check availability, someone might start using it while you're walking from your room to the front desk, leading to a wait of up to 40 minutes (I actually waited about that long in the lobby). The room's bath has a limit of four uses. The meals were average; the rice was undercooked and inedible. The dessert was the best part. It's too expensive for just enjoying the atmosphere.

With high hopes for the future

This was my first visit. Upon arrival, I was guided to a sofa seat for the check-in process and took a seat, but I was a bit surprised when two servings of tea and snacks were placed on the table even though my husband had not yet entered the building. I subtly mentioned to the staff that it would be better to wait until both of us were present, as the tea would get cold, but they didn’t seem to fully understand. The room was spacious, but I didn’t find the sofa height comfortable—it felt awkward to sit on. This is just my personal opinion, but instead of placing the same type of sofa everywhere, it might be worth considering what would truly delight guests in that space. There’s also room for improvement in how the wiring and cords are arranged. As for the meals, there was sashimi as well as French-style dishes, which made it a bit challenging to select the right alcoholic pairing. Overall, my evaluation is on the stricter side, but considering the cost-effectiveness relative to the price, I hope there’s room for improvement.

I was able to relax ...

I was able to relax both mind and body in a quiet and calm atmosphere, perfect for an adult getaway. They arranged everything, including the Shuttle Service, to ensure I could enjoy my stay in Arima to the fullest. I would definitely like to visit again.

    This price is unbelievable.

Over the past 10 years, I have stayed at over 100 luxury ryokans domestically, but this was my first experience like this, and it was a very disappointing stay. The facility is clean but not cost-effective. Both dinner and breakfast lack creativity. The amenities are also insufficient. For nearly 200,000 yen for two people, I felt the content did not match the price. I don't usually write harsh reviews, but I was disappointed.

    I had a relaxing time.

This was my second time using it, and the Onsen was really great, and the food was delicious! My family of three was able to relax. Thank you very much!
