    A Hidden-Gem Onsen in Kameoka!

The staff were very kind. The Onsen felt a bit dated in places, but the water quality seemed excellent. The temperature was just right for a long soak, and the hot spring water flowed generously, which was great. Somehow I felt less tired after my stay. A day-trip Onsen visit might be especially recommended. I was also happy with the amenities—OSAJI and other natural-style products. However, it was disappointing that there was no sauna or cold plunge bath. The Facility seems to have been renovated, but the level of renovation varied depending on the area. For example, the dining venue and the Room were very clean. That said, given its condition, I think it would be better not to open the garden pool at all. Also, it was hard to tell which side to open the bath door from. For meals, I chose a seasonal Plan featuring ayu sweetfish and hamo conger eel; it was disappointing that there was only one ayu dish and that I couldn’t really taste much “ayu-ness” in the ayu rice. Overall, though, everything tasted good. The book lounge had a lovely atmosphere, but many of the books looked quite worn. Putting small details aside, I think it’s a nice Facility overall—but it didn’t feel like good value for money. If the price were lower, I’d consider it a recommended Ryokan that isn’t too far from central Kyoto City. This may be because I chose the seasonal Plan; if I had gone with the standard meal option instead, I might have felt more satisfied in terms of value.

We had a truly wonderful time.

I stayed here for a solo retreat focused on cognitive maintenance—this was my second visit, following my stay in June. It’s just over an hour from home, yet I was amazed at how much it felt like a true escape from everyday life. I was able to spend a wonderfully relaxing time. I love Onsen, and I think I soaked in the open-air bath in my Room about 7–8 times. The meals were also perfect—not too much (as I’ve gotten older and can’t eat as much as I used to). I was able to do things that are hard to make time for in daily life when I’m busy—reading, reflecting, sleeping, resting, and writing. I plan to stay regularly, so thank you again, and I look forward to returning.

Warmed by the smile of the woman who took care of us.

While staying in Osaka, we visited Kameoka and Yunohana Onsen for the first time. It was less than an hour by expressway from home and close to central Kyoto, yet surprisingly quiet and full of charm. After seeing the Sagano Scenic Railway, we stopped by Anotaji Temple before arriving at the Accommodation. We rinsed off in the open-air bath in our Room. Surrounded by lush greenery right in front of us, we enjoyed a forest-bathing experience while listening to insects chirping. As dusk approached, it was time for dinner and we were shown to a private dining room. The food was delicious, and each dish was served with elegance. More than anything, however, Ms. A who assisted us provided outstanding service—always with a lovely smile as she kindly entertained two tipsy guests—making it a truly pleasant time. Over the past few years, my spouse and I have stayed at various Accommodations through IKYU, but this was among the very best experiences we’ve had. My personal priorities when evaluating an Accommodation are: 1) people (service), 2) 4S (organization, tidiness, cleaning, cleanliness), 3) cuisine, and 4) atmosphere. We were able to relax again the next day and headed home smiling as a couple. Thank you very much. If I may mention just one point of dissatisfaction: we were generally very satisfied with the open-air bath in our Room, but there is some kind of duct laid across several meters of ground in the forest directly in front of it; I wished it could be screened from view somehow.

Is this okay for a long-established Ryokan?

After being shown to our Room, we found the Onsen clearly showed its age, but it was pleasantly warm and continuously flowing. Regarding in-room dining, we were very concerned about dust blowing down from the ventilation opening directly above the table and from the air conditioner vent. The next morning’s breakfast in the dining hall had a well-balanced combination of dishes, but there was no call bell, and no attendant came by at all to take requests for tea or rice. When we walked over ourselves, we saw staff chatting in the kitchen—this was the same on both nights of our two-night stay—and it was very disappointing. If you employ foreign staff, I think proper training is necessary. All the more so given this is a long-established Ryokan with pricing to match. We did not feel at all that we would like to stay again next time.

    Solo travel

I suddenly got some time off, so I looked for a nearby Accommodation where I could stay alone in a Room with an open-air bath, and made a Reservation here. When I arrived, I felt a bit uneasy because quite a few large trucks were passing on the road in front of the Accommodation, but it didn’t affect the Room at all. I was able to relax. It would be even better if there were Facilities such as towel racks on the open-air bath side of the Room. I was very satisfied with the meals. I heard the wild boar hot pot is delicious, so I’d like to visit again if I have the chance. On my departure day, due to worsening weather, service on the Sagano Line was suspended, but I truly appreciate that you provided Shuttle Service to Katsuragawa Station on the Tokaido Main Line. Thank you very much.

This was a three-generation trip to celebrate my mother’s birthday. Her legs have gotten worse, so she can no longer travel far or go sightseeing. Even so, we enjoyed plenty of delicious food, she was delighted with the massage, and the Onsen helped relax both her body and mind. Thank you for being so kind and attentive to my mother. P.S. It was our first time having a foot bath in the Room, and it was wonderful. We will choose this Room again next time.

It was different from what was stated on the website.

I decided to stay here after viewing the website, but in the end it was very disappointing. The website stated “free-flowing Onsen open-air bath,” but I believe it is actually a semi-open-air bath. It was completely different from the photos on the website: all sides were covered with glass, and even the ceiling was covered with a bamboo roof—an indoor bath. As described on the website, there was no way to “enjoy the moon and stars in the night sky.” I don’t know how it was originally, but if things have changed, I think the website should be promptly updated with current information, and posting photos that are so different is unacceptable. Both the photos and descriptions were entirely different, which is simply disappointing. Also, although Onsen water did come out, despite there being a “HOT” sign, only cold water came out and it was not warm at all. I have stayed at many Ryokan and rooms with open-air baths before, but this is the first time I have felt this disappointed. I will not be returning, but for future guests as well, I hope you will urgently revise and improve your website.

    Exceptional hospitality

We visit every year as a family. When our children were little, they used to avoid certain foods, but after trying dishes served at Sumiya, they found them delicious. Since then, those foods have become favorites—and now they’re among their top choices. Now that the kids are older, we enjoyed the adult meal course this year. The Onsen is also outstanding. The water feels smooth and light, and the temperature is comfortable—not too hot. The open-air bath has a different charm depending on the weather, and it’s wonderful even in the rain. We alternated between the large public bath and the in-Room bath and felt truly refreshed. In summer there is also an outdoor pool, which we were able to use privately—something we really appreciate when traveling with children. The kids are already saying they want to come again. It’s an Accommodation with a refined atmosphere, but it’s also considerate toward children, so I highly recommend it for family stays as well.

Seasonal Dishes Featuring Pike Conger and Sweetfish

My 84-year-old mother wanted to eat conger eel, so the three of us visited together with my niece. We had a Reservation for the Yama-no-Iori Room, but since there was a cancellation, we were upgraded to a Room with an open-air bath, which made us very happy. There were many international staff members, and their service was truly pleasant and welcoming. The food was consistently delicious as always—nothing to complain about. We enjoyed conger eel in many different dishes: sashimi, grilled, shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, and more. The salt-grilled sweetfish was also excellent, and it was my first time trying sweetfish rice—delicious and very satisfying. My mother and I have visited several times before; it was my niece’s first visit, but she really liked it too, which we were glad to see. Just one thing: my niece said the pillow was a bit low, which was the only disappointment. We will be back again in October for the matsutake dishes with three families—my parents’ family and my sister and her husband’s family as well. Thank you very much!

    An almost perfect Accommodation

From the Shuttle Service, welcome, check-in, guidance to the Room, dinner service staff, check-out, and the return Shuttle Service, the hospitality was flawless. However, there was one unpleasant experience with service. At breakfast, the person who brought grilled fish and matsutake mushroom sticky rice had a blank expression without even a hint of a smile, and placed the dishes down noisily. I was disappointed by the contrast compared with everyone else. She was an older woman wearing a kimono. It ruined what should have been a delicious meal. Our Room was “Seone.” It was spacious and clean, with two toilets, so we stayed very comfortably. There is only one bath towel and one face towel per person, but there is a towel warmer so it wasn’t an issue. There are both yukata and something like loungewear, but they are basically the same design with different fabric. It would be better if one option were a two-piece set so you don’t have to worry about it coming loose while sleeping. The private open-air Onsen felt even more deep in the mountains than I expected (in a good way). It takes about 5 minutes on foot from the cooling area to get there. In summer there are lots of insects, so if that bothers you I recommend using the large public bath instead. It’s also hard to understand when and how you can make a Reservation for the private bath Onsen—I'd like that information to be included in the questions from the Accommodation at Reservation time. The large public bath has both an outdoor bath and an indoor bath, and I loved being able to use it from check-in until check-out. It was also great that draft beer was available at a discounted price for a limited season. A cold beer after bathing is perfect. And dinner: Everything from appetizers onward was delicious. The most impressive dish was salt-crusted steamed abalone—it became unbelievably tender, and my boyfriend and I kept saying how good it was. The Tanba beef was also excellent; we really enjoyed Kyoto flavors. We were very satisfied. The inari sushi served as a late-night snack was such thoughtful hospitality. Breakfast tasted very good as well, but as mentioned above it ended up being very disappointing. Lastly: the open-air Onsen in our Room was unbelievably lukewarm—so much so that it felt cold when our bodies were warmed up in summer. We had to run hot water for quite some time before it became comfortable enough to enter at all; it didn’t feel like true free-flowing hot spring water anymore. Overall this Accommodation had many great points—but since we travel mainly for Onsen and food—and unless something can be done about water temperature—we don’t think we would return.

    Always delicious

The food is outstanding, and I have stayed here many times. Because you can relax in the Onsen at your own pace, this Accommodation helps you unwind when you’re tired and leave feeling refreshed. However, every time I stay, I’m disappointed that the view from the Room isn’t very good. The windows also don’t seem to be cleaned well due to insects and such, so I end up closing the shoji screens right away. I wish I could sit back with a coffee while enjoying the green mountain scenery. I’d be happy if there were some changes so repeat guests could enjoy something new as well. I’d like to visit again for the food.

The sukiyaki portion was a bit too large.

I wanted to stay in a Room with an open-air bath, but unfortunately there was no bed-type option, so I stayed in a Room with an indoor Onsen bath. The indoor bath was great, and both the large public bath and the open-air bath were also excellent. We chose sukiyaki, but it felt like about three servings. I felt bad leaving any, so I overate and ended up feeling uncomfortable in the middle of the night and couldn’t sleep. I think it would be better if the portion were just enough to leave you wanting a little more.

    Wonderful Accommodation

The Accommodation was even more wonderful than it looked in the photos. A staff member was waiting in front of the Accommodation and took care of us from start to finish. We stayed to celebrate a birthday, and they prepared a cake and made the meal feel truly special for the occasion. We were able to enjoy dinner at a relaxed pace, and the food was delicious. Thank you as well for accommodating us even though we got the breakfast time wrong. Everything was excellent—the sashimi at dinner, the conger eel dishes, and at breakfast the miso minced topping, tofu, and warm rice. The Room was very clean, and the surroundings were lush with greenery and beautiful. The bath attached to the Room stayed wonderfully warm and helped melt away our fatigue! It’s an Accommodation that made us want to come back again. Thank you very much!

    This is a wonderful Accommodation.

Both the food and the service were excellent. The only slight disappointment was that at breakfast, the grilled fish and chimaki were served after I had already eaten more than half of my meal, and I ended up not having enough rice.

    I was satisfied.

I stayed for two nights in Honami, a Room with a free-flowing natural hot spring bath. Honami has beds and a table in the living area, making it the most suitable Room in this Ryokan for me, as I have knee and lower-back issues. It happened to be available for two days, and I made a Reservation at a special “limited conditions” rate due to the renovation of the large public bath. The young manager at the front desk was very attentive, and the woman who served dinner also provided excellent service. As always, the meals were even more delicious than expected, and this was my most satisfying stay so far. The price was reasonable, and the value for money was outstanding.

In contrast to the exterior, the inside was modern and stylish. The front desk service was excellent, and the kashiwa-mochi and kuromame tea served upon arrival were very delicious. I asked various questions at dinner, and everything was handled politely. Thank you very much. Regarding the Onsen, I noticed a small step between the changing area and the bath entrance (it’s easy to miss), and I slightly stumbled on it, so it concerned me. Other than that, everything was perfect. The food was also very delicious. The Room had a wonderful “house in the woods” atmosphere. It was truly relaxing for a while. Thank you very much.

Relax and unwind as a couple

A one-night, two-day trip starting on the first day of Golden Week. It’s not a tourist spot, but we were able to relax at the Ryokan. From the moment we entered, we were captivated by the tasteful decorations and ornaments. All of the meals were delicious, and the rice cooked in the traditional kamado was truly outstanding. However, it was disappointing that we couldn’t book a spa treatment on the same day. There are many maple trees, and we would like to visit again in autumn.

It was a kind and comfortable Accommodation for my elderly mother.

When staying at an Accommodation for the first time, I usually refer to the low-rated Reviews. This time the ratings were polarized and I was a bit unsure, but after our stay, I felt that the points needing improvement had been properly reviewed and addressed. Noticing my elderly mother, who has limited mobility and a visual impairment, you immediately prepared a wheelchair and welcomed us. We truly appreciate your thoughtful care. In the in-Room open-air bath, you provided a fixed step and handrails to make it easier for her to get into the tub despite her limited mobility, and also placed a stable chair in the washing area—this genuinely moved us. Every month, three generations of our family visit various Onsen Accommodations, and whether my mother can step over into the tub is extremely important. In that respect, this setup was truly helpful, and we felt this Accommodation (Room) can be recommended with confidence to guests in similar situations. Because we had pre-ordered extra meat for dinner, the portion size was just right and we were satisfied. Younger guests might enjoy having one additional dish alongside the standard course. My daughter was especially happy with the late-night “inari sushi,” breakfast was also delicious, and I ended up having two bowls of rice. All staff members across departments were consistently courteous from arrival through departure, and we felt heartfelt hospitality throughout. If I were to mention areas for improvement: the manually opened door leading to the women’s open-air bath closes with slightly strong force, and there is a somewhat sharp section near its lower edge; consideration from a safety standpoint would make it even more reassuring. Also, although we stayed in a Room on the second floor this time, noise from above (the third floor) carried somewhat. That said, it was within reasonable hours so I consider it something that can happen either way. The sofa in our living space was very helpful; if possible, having back support would make it even more relaxing. In addition, since there are relatively few Rooms overall here، offering light drinks、ice cream، or small snacks in the lounge would further enhance guest satisfaction. While this is an older Accommodation، it was very kind to my elderly mother with limited mobility، allowing her to stay comfortably with peace of mind. What people seek in an Accommodation varies، but for us، this has become one of our cherished places—an Accommodation we definitely want to visit again.

The food and service were excellent. The bath in the Room was very relaxing. However, it might have been even better if there had been a privacy screen for changing. It was a very nice accommodation.

The Room was very clean, the service was excellent, and the meals were outstanding. We chose a Room with a private jacuzzi and a hot stone sauna, so we were able to relax at our own pace and were very satisfied. We also used the large public bath; although the facilities are older, everything was clean, the water temperature wasn’t too hot—perfect for me—and the open-air bath was great as well. Next time, I’d like to try the private bath too. All in all, it was an Accommodation close by that I found truly satisfying.

An Accommodation where you can enjoy beautiful birdsong

The Onsen was soothing at a perfect temperature—neither too hot nor too lukewarm—so I could relax and unwind. I thought it would already be warm since it was after the cherry blossom season, but I felt cold while walking through the nature-lined corridor to the large public bath. I wish I had brought thick socks for getting around. Since there are very few Ryokan where you can dine in a private or semi-private room, we really appreciated being able to use a private room for dinner. After checkout, I’m sorry for the trouble we caused due to our carelessness. Thank you very much for the two wonderful days.

We were very satisfied and could see the attention to detail throughout.

This was our first stay here on a long-awaited trip with my mother. The Accommodation features artworks throughout, and the Room was thoughtfully designed for a comfortable stay, even down to the flooring, which really showed the care and attention to detail. The in-room bath was also wonderful. The meals were delicious in every way—taste, presentation, and tableware. Above all, the warm hospitality from the staff who guided us to our Room and took care of us during meals made a lasting impression; both my mother and my wife were very happy. We could see thoughtful touches everywhere, including a strong focus on wine as well, and next time we would like to visit with our children too. Thank you very much.

I felt that the quality of service had declined.

This was my third stay, but I felt the quality of service declined each time. I understand that many places are dealing with staff shortages, but I was surprised by some unpleasant remarks from a staff member. The meals also didn’t taste as good as before—perhaps my tastes have changed—but to be honest, I wasn’t satisfied overall. The only highlight was the open-air bath, where I could relax and was pleased with it.
