    A tranquil Accommodation overlooking the Tsugaru Strait

    This is a quiet, relaxing Accommodation overlooking the Tsugaru Strait. The meals were especially delicious, with each dish carefully prepared. The tableware also reflected the value and tradition of a Ryokan. With heartfelt service, it was a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much.

    Couples’ Trip

    My spouse and I traveled to Hokkaido and were looking forward to the meals and the Onsen, and it was just as satisfying as we had hoped. The Ryokan’s hospitality—from the first tea and sweets on arrival to the atmospheric first floor—along with the meals and attentive service, was excellent.

    I stayed at this Accommodation at the end of June. Overall, I was extremely satisfied. At check-in, I was served delicious matcha. The staff were great to talk to and showed thoughtful, subtle hospitality. The meals I had been looking forward to were truly wonderful in both presentation and taste. The salted squid served at breakfast was especially delicious. I also enjoyed the bath while listening to the sound of the waves. Thank you very much.

    A refined, authentic Onsen Accommodation near Hakodate Airport—perfect for your second night.

    On the first night, we stayed near the lively Hakodate Station area. Dinner at an izakaya was fine and tasty enough, but to end our trip we wanted a good Onsen and delicious meals, so we chose this Accommodation. We were soothed by the atmosphere unique to a long-established Ryokan and by the warm hospitality of the staff. Both dinner and breakfast left us completely satisfied. Even amid global warming and today’s wave of price increases, we could feel the chef’s heartfelt care in every dish, and we enjoyed it with deep gratitude. The traditional tableware was also beautiful, making each bite even more enjoyable. In the bath area, ancient hinoki cypress is used in key places, filling the space with a wonderful fragrance. According to an information board, two massive logs—about 2 meters in diameter and 200–250 years old—had remained submerged deep under the sea for some 2,000 years after falling while still alive. Because of this, they did not decay; their natural components were preserved within the old wood and gently released into the bathing space. The water temperature was just right—comfortable and not taxing on the heart—so we could soak with peace of mind. The Room had two Japanese-style rooms with low beds, which were very comfortable. Because of the layout—with some distance to reach the toilet—guests with mobility issues or those who need frequent nighttime bathroom visits may find it slightly inconvenient at first. Once accustomed to it, however, there is a changing area, a bedroom, and even a tea-ceremony-style preparation space; overall it felt like a thoughtfully designed setting full of character. The TV was not one of today’s large-screen models; it sat in one corner of a spacious veranda furnished with wicker chairs. We took that as part of the travel charm. After bathing before bed, I really wanted to watch soccer news while lying down; by sliding one side of the shoji partition over, I managed to find an angle where I could watch. Some people may prefer modern luxury Hotels above all else—but this stay reminded us how enjoyable it can be to sense an Accommodation’s spirit while savoring rich local character. It was a wonderful experience. The view from the large dining hall was stunning: windows designed like framed paintings transformed everything from evening waves rolling in to midnight-black moonlit scenery into something like Japanese art. We were truly moved. We occasionally saw other guests inside—from older travelers to young people—some in groups and some solo. We found their choice reassuringly tasteful. To all of you who handled what must be one of the most demanding roles—the meal service—thank you for your gracious hospitality in kimono that suited each person so well! When we left this Accommodation and were seen off by everyone in such classic fashion as only Japan does best, something warm stirred inside me as Japanese. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

    Wonderful Room

    The Room offered a wonderful panoramic view of the ocean. It was very clean, with beautiful fresh flowers, drinks provided, and well-stocked amenities—we were very satisfied. The Onsen was also clean and we were very satisfied. We did notice that the in-room TV was small and that the two-seater sofa in front of it wasn’t very comfortable, but overall it was a great stay. It’s a historic Ryokan with plenty of charm, and we’re glad we chose it.

    It might be a bit disappointing.

    The beautifully presented dishes were delicious and truly enjoyable. However, I felt the overall balance could have been better. Two fish courses were served consecutively at the end, and both used rather bold cooking methods. I think it would have been even better with some variation to break up the flavors, such as adding a vinegared dish. As for the Room, with the bed in place the entrance feels narrow and it is easy to trip, so I think elderly guests need to be especially careful. It may be worth asking guests’ ages in advance and, depending on that, placing them in a larger Room as shown on your official website. In particular, my companion said they were concerned about this when going to the toilet at night.

    Onsen and Cuisine

    We cannot include detailed comments here. The quality of the Onsen is good, but it was small and not very relaxing. As for the food, it earned a Michelin star 7 years ago, but that may no longer be the case now.

    Everything was simply outstanding. The cuisine, in particular, was truly moving. It made me feel so grateful to have been born Japanese. I would love to experience the seasonal dishes again, so I will definitely return.

    This trip to Hakodat...

    This trip to Hakodate was themed around relaxing at Yunokawa Onsen, and we were excited to visit this Ryokan. At check-in, we received explanations about the private bath service for first-time guests and complimentary drinks during dinner, which we were looking forward to. Additionally, the delicious original dacquoise served as a tea snack impressed us and made for a wonderful start. Of course, the meals were highly satisfying, and we enjoyed an amazing time in our room while admiring the snowy scenery.

    A historic Onsen Ryokan offering authentic Kaiseki cuisine

    The hospitality was excellent, and both the kaiseki cuisine and breakfast featured local ingredients at this historic Ryokan. While the Facility is a bit outdated, it left a positive impression. It's a place you'd want to visit again.

    A serene and traditional Onsen accommodation. From the stately entrance to the tranquil hall featuring a massive wooden table made from a single slab of timber, and the polished staircase exuding the charm of a long-established inn. On the day of your stay, it coincides with the Harvest Moon, and the seasonal decorations include autumn harvests such as the seven autumn flowers, chestnuts, taro, sweet potatoes, and large edamame, along with delightful moon-viewing sweets. The room offers a breathtaking view of the Tsugaru Strait. Head straight to enjoy the Onsen. The water here is neither too hot nor too cold, with a silky texture that feels soothing on the skin, melting away your stress. The sight of squid fishing boats illuminated in the distance from the open-air bath evokes a nostalgic sense of travel. It’s been a while since I’ve experienced such a wonderful accommodation. The cuisine is a traditional kaiseki meal. While not extravagant, the dishes are meticulously prepared, allowing you to fully savor the high quality of the seafood and vegetables. The rice cooked with root vegetables at the end of the meal is exceptionally delicious. Although the Harvest Moon was hidden behind scattered clouds, the warm, unpretentious hospitality of the staff made the dinner truly enjoyable. The final dessert was, of course, the moon-viewing sweets. This is an accommodation you’ll want to visit during seasonal transitions.

    A Wonderful Kappo Ryokan

    This is a wonderful Ryokan that makes you feel grateful to be born in this country. The cuisine is exceptional, showcasing the seasonal flavors of Hokkaido, and even as an amateur, I can only say, "It was absolutely delicious." From the room, you can see Mount Hakodate, and in the private dining area, you can enjoy your meal while gazing at the horizon. The Onsen was also fantastic and provided a relaxing experience. The intricate latticework at the room entrance, well-maintained furniture despite its age, and the thoughtful hospitality of staff embodying a classic yet not excessive Japanese Ryokan style—all were exactly what I was looking for. It was a perfect accommodation to heal my tired body and mind from work.

    It was the best accommodation!

    I was looking for an accommodation by the sea in Yunokawa Onsen and found this place. The reviews were good, so I had high expectations, and it did not disappoint. From the attentive service starting at the entrance to the solemn atmosphere of the interior, it felt like a traditional luxury accommodation in a good way with no vending machines or shops inside. They upgraded our room to a wonderful one on the top floor, offering breathtaking ocean views from the window. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and very satisfying. The best part was the private onsen bath—it was by far the most beautiful private bath I've experienced among all accommodations I've stayed at. Spacious, clean, and flawless. I heard they also have another location in Yugawara, so I would love to stay there next time. A black-tailed gull perched on the railing outside our room, so I couldn't resist taking a photo!

    A mix of the charm and quirks of a long-established inn

    I often stay at accommodations with onsen featuring natural hot spring water. While some places claim to have natural hot springs but use chlorine, this was not the case here. The onsen water was excellent. Towels were provided in the bath area, which is a great service for someone like me who enjoys multiple soaks in the onsen. The room was spacious with a stunning ocean view, and having it all to myself made for a wonderful experience. However, the meals were disappointing. I had high expectations as it is described as a kaiseki ryokan, but there wasn’t anything particularly delicious or memorable about the food. The whale miso soup had an overpowering smell and was undrinkable. While the staff member assisting me seemed experienced, during my room orientation they mentioned that solo female travelers are sometimes turned away because they might be traveling due to heartbreak—this comment felt unnecessary and left me uncomfortable even if it referred to past practices. I frequently travel alone for onsen trips and have noticed that many ryokans now cater well to solo travelers. As for amenities, there was an Illy espresso machine in the room which delighted me as a coffee lover; however, it was extremely difficult to use and not enjoyable—the capsules were over-pressurized and didn’t taste good either, likely due to low usage by guests. Additionally, the hairdryer in my room was broken. Although I don’t plan on revisiting this accommodation again, I would recommend their excellent quality of onsen water!

    Another highly satisfying trip to Hakodate!

    We are an elderly couple from Kansai who are big fans of the Tigers. This was our second visit, as we couldn't forget the wonderful experience we had two years ago. We were warmly welcomed by the same staff member who assisted us last time, and their heartfelt hospitality truly touched us. The cuisine surpassed even that of Kyoto's finest restaurants, with exquisite presentation and meticulous attention to detail in every dish—it was truly impressive. This Ryokan undoubtedly deserves its Michelin one-star rating. The view of the Tsugaru Strait from our room was breathtaking, and watching ships pass by added to the enjoyment. A seagull even perched right outside our window as if welcoming us, which made us very happy. We stayed at Wakamatsu for two nights during our three-day trip to Hakodate, and it was a perfect experience with exceptional food, warm hospitality, and cherry blossom sightseeing in Hakodate, Hokuto, and Matsumae. It was a thoroughly satisfying trip! Thank you so much to everyone at Wakamatsu Ryokan—we would love to visit again!

    Recommended Accommodation in Yunokawa Onsen

    The Japanese-style dinner was delicious. The view of the sea from both the room and the open-air bath was fantastic. Unlike large hotels, there were no group tourists, so it was a quiet and peaceful stay. Highly recommended accommodation if you're staying in Yunokawa Onsen.
