A nostalgic atmosphere that feels like stepping back into the Showa era.
Stayed for a family birthday trip. The accommodation had a charming, retro atmosphere that felt like stepping back into the Showa era. There were various rest areas throughout the accommodation, perfect for relaxing with a book or simply unwinding. The retro-style chairs were very comfortable, and even the scent carried an old-fashioned charm reminiscent of the past. Some rooms were located quite far from the bath area, making it feel like navigating a maze at times. In winter, the hallways seemed like they could get very cold. A few minutes' walk from the accommodation was an exclusive bathing area for guests featuring five private semi-open-air baths and one non-private semi-open-air bath. It might be challenging to visit in bad weather, but we went both in the evening and morning to enjoy 100% natural hot spring water that kept our bodies warm—truly excellent Onsen water! However, some parts of the bathtubs and floors had sharp textures due to mineral deposits from the Onsen water, so caution was needed (laughs). The large open-air baths offered three temperature options: cold-feeling lukewarm, very lukewarm, and very hot—but unfortunately none at just-right temperatures. Dinner by an irori hearth was delicious; however, it could get smoky so clothing care is advised. All staff members were warm and provided excellent hospitality throughout our stay!

It was comfortable.
The Ryokan had a nostalgic atmosphere throughout, creating a comfortable stay. The meals were well-portioned and delicious. The bathroom was clean, allowing for a relaxing soak in the Onsen. It was a Ryokan I would love to visit again.

We had a great time.
This is my second stay. Last time, it was a snowy day, and I couldn't forget the warmth of the irori (traditional Japanese hearth), so I chose a room with an irori again this time. The accommodation has an old charm that feels comfortable, and it's easy to see why it attracts many guests from overseas. The room, bath, and dining area are all well-cleaned and exude a sense of cleanliness. The bathwater is at just the right temperature, allowing for a relaxing soak that warms you to your core. Meals are served around an irori with a sunken kotatsu-style seating arrangement, where you can enjoy warm dishes like char-grilled fish (iwana), gohei mochi rice cakes, and seasoned fried tofu. Breakfast includes hearty miso soup warmed over the irori; it was delicious enough to make me go for seconds on rice! Waking up to the sound of birds singing at dawn added to the refreshing atmosphere and made for a wonderful experience. I hope to visit again if I have another opportunity!

Excessive expectations
I love the Okuhida Onsen Village and have been staying at the ryokans in this area in order. This ryokan, which has been around for a long time, was a grand presence, so I had deliberately avoided it until now. It was my first stay, but the building, bath, and various places had cobwebs, indicating that cleaning was not thorough. The open-air bath also had a nice atmosphere, but the surrounding trees were not well-maintained, making it look untidy.

Yumoto Choza, I visi...
Yumoto Choza, I visited for the first time in a long time since staying with my parents about 30 years ago. However, the Room (Matsu no Ie type) we were shown to was broken in various places, and when we checked in at 15:00, the futon was already laid out. There was no space to relax. It was disappointing, perhaps due to a lack of staff. In the Onsen, there was only one bath available, with no change between men and women. The meal was deliciously enjoyed around the irori. Perhaps it has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I stayed on a chilly...
I stayed on a chilly rainy day, but it was nice to be able to warm up by lighting a fire in the irori. However, it was a bit disappointing that the entrance was hard to find when I arrived at the property, and the person to greet me didn't come immediately, so I wandered around in the rain. The room being old didn't bother me as it is an old folk house, and the meal by the irori was delicious. I would like to visit next time during the winter scenery.

A Ryokan representing the Fukuji Onsen Village
This is a Ryokan that must be mentioned when talking about Fukuji Onsen. Given the current times, about a quarter of the guests on the day I stayed were foreigners. However, most of them were from Western countries and had a calm demeanor, quietly enjoying the old Japanese atmosphere. The Ryokan's features are its indoor and open-air baths, allowing for a relaxing stay compared to the number of rooms and capacity. Especially the private baths (family baths) can be enjoyed leisurely by up to four adults, both indoors and in the open-air. Of course, the large bath is also more than spacious enough, both indoors and outdoors. The water temperature is exquisite, and I think it rivals the commitment to the source of "Magokuro" across the way. The vast grounds are dotted with several old wealthy farmer houses, and you might get lost if you're not careful. It is a representative Ryokan of Fukuji Onsen, which shines with the image of Okuhida even among the Okuhida Onsen Villages.

Onsen is the best
After all, the Onsen was great. Especially the riverside Onsen was wonderful. I have stayed here many times, and the detached room is calm and the best. The food seemed to have declined a bit. The miso ponzu was not on the pork spare ribs with miso ponzu, and I told the staff, but there was no response. The charcoal grill was also cold and not very good. The female staff who guided us to the room when we arrived was pleasant. However, I still want to visit again.

Very satisfied
We used this place as a family for the first time in over ten years. The atmosphere of the inn was excellent, and the staff were very kind and appreciated. There were many foreign groups, but the dining venue was also private, with consideration for privacy in everything, making it very comfortable. The food was excellent, and the Hida beef was delicious. I definitely want to use it again.

The best bath
The hot springs, location, and building are among the top-class inns in Japan. The sight of the family staff working diligently is very heartwarming. However, despite the current labor shortage, it seems they are struggling with the maintenance of the extensive grounds.
