    First Time in Ginzan Onsen

Planning a summer vacation trip to Tohoku, I searched for Ginzan Onsen on IKYU and happened to find availability at Fujiya (maybe due to a cancellation), so I made a Reservation right away. I was thrilled—my long-awaited Ginzan Onsen stay, and at Fujiya. However, due to a typhoon, it poured all day. I had been looking forward to the night view, but couldn’t go for a walk and could only enjoy it from the Accommodation. Still, every Room has a large window overlooking the entire Onsen townscape, and the atmosphere is perfect. There are no curtains or blinds, so you may make eye contact with guests at the Ryokan across the way—please be careful when changing clothes. There are five baths in total, each with its own concept, and every one offers an extraordinary experience. Bathing is available 24 hours; when I went in late at night, I couldn’t find the light switch and ended up bathing in the dark. Dinner is served in-room and was satisfying overall, but the attendant was extremely rushed—trying to clear plates while we were still eating—so we couldn’t relax during the meal. That was disappointing. The Room has an outstanding “escape from everyday life” feel, but outlets and light switches are hidden away in hard-to-find places; honestly speaking, it isn’t very user-friendly. Breakfast was excellent: a large grilled salmon fillet, yudofu served in an earthenware pot, simmered fried tofu pouches, and more—truly superb. After check-out, someone providing Shuttle Service to the parking lot kindly took photos for us—but they were backlit… Fujiya offers an extraordinary stay, but it may not be ideal for those accustomed to more conventional Onsen Ryokan experiences.

A Fantastical Ryokan in Ginzan Onsen

I was finally able to stay overnight at Ginzan Onsen, which I had always wanted to visit for years. Once I arrived, I found Fujiya to have the most beautiful exterior and atmosphere in Ginzan Onsen—and it’s right in the very center. From my Room, I could enjoy the best view of the nostalgic scenery along the river. All of the staff were kind and attentive, and the meals were delicious. There are five private baths, each with its own charm; however, as someone with presbyopia, I found it hard to see in darker areas at night and couldn’t clearly make out my surroundings near the tub. If you have similar eyesight concerns, I recommend bathing while it’s still light outside. The Room was wonderful as well. Some reviews mention that things can be confusing, but basically: pull to enter and push to exit where there is a keyhole. The sliding doors also have proper finger holds. If you find the washbasin small, washing in the bath might be easier. Because it’s such a beautiful building, it made me want to take good care of it. The veranda-like space facing Ginzan Onsen was perfect for slowly enjoying the view outside. Everything—from the stairways to how the lights illuminate each area—was simply enchanting. At night, with frogs calling in the background like natural music, I felt truly immersed in a travel mood. When I asked a staff member about it, they said winter is indeed the most popular season—snow on that scenery must be unbeatable. Thank you very much for providing Shuttle Service both ways from Oishida Station. Fujiya was lovely even in the rain when we left. Thank you again for taking such great care of us throughout our stay.

The design is prioritized over usability.

The bathroom, storage, vanity area, and closet are stylish, but far too impractical to use. It might feel easier after several nights, but for a one-night stay it was stressful.

    湖大好き

I visited again for the first time in 20 years.

It was my first time back in Ginzan Onsen in a while, and once again we stayed at Fujiya. The building’s exterior is striking, and the nostalgic view of the Onsen town from the window was just as wonderful as before. The staff were excellent—polite and attentive—and we had a truly enjoyable stay. I would definitely like to stay at Fujiya again for a third visit.

A Property I Wanted to Stay At

Reservation for a cancellation slot This is a Property I had always wanted to stay at. I had very high expectations for this Property. It was the smallest and most affordable Room (around 90,000 yen for two people). We were told that dinner would start all at once at 6 PM, and of course, we agreed. The amenities for women were at the level of a Business Hotel. Although there were five private Onsen baths, each person was only provided with two towels. Since this Property serves meals in the Room, the staff brought the food to the Room, but the way they served it was truly terrible. There was no sense of hospitality, and the dishes were served one after another, making us feel extremely rushed. It was to the point where I wondered, "Is this really a Ryokan?" The serving was rough, with loud clattering noises. The staff seemed too restless while serving... Everything was done too carelessly by the female staff member. The food looked luxurious, but there was nothing particularly noteworthy. Even the timing of laying out the futon was not according to our preference, but rather at the Property's convenience. The futon was laid out in a very rough manner, even while we were in the Room. Moreover, the futon mattress was thin, and since there was no heating except for a kerosene heater, it was cold. It made us wonder if this was the way the Property trained their staff, as their behavior felt so pressuring. Even if they were busy, it was blatantly obvious that they were giving off an "I'm so busy" aura. For breakfast, the same staff member attended to us, but before serving, they said, "We want to clear the futon, so we'll come to clean up at 8:15," but they actually came at 8:10. Then breakfast was served before 8:30, and everything was cleared out before 9:00. For us, who had been looking forward to this Property, it turned out to be a truly unpleasant stay. However, the location in the center of Ginzan Onsen was perfect. The view of Ginzan Onsen from the Room was absolutely stunning and left nothing to be desired. The reception at check-in was very good and pleasant. But we will never stay here again.
