It was a cozy and comfortable accommodation.

We stayed here during the summer holidays. True to its reputation as a hidden hot spring in Tohoku, the location was quite challenging to reach, but it was a wonderful Accommodation. The interior was kept very clean, and arrangements of lisianthus and asters placed here and there were soothing. One minor point—perhaps due to the deep mountain setting and humidity—the indoor toilet had a slight musty smell at times, but otherwise it was a very comfortable Ryokan.

I was able to relax and feel refreshed.

It was an Accommodation where we could spend a quiet stay without running into other guests. The meals featured seasonal local ingredients, and everything was delicious. Each dish was carefully prepared to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients. The watermelon dessert was exceptional, and we stopped by the farm we were told about to buy some as a souvenir on our way home. The bath was fed directly from the source and gentle on the skin—a soothing Onsen that melted away our fatigue. Next time, we’d like to visit during cherry season.

    The building is old ...

The building is old but clean, and it has been renovated in a modern style, so we didn’t feel any inconvenience in the Room. The Onsen had wonderful water, and the meals were delicious—especially the dishes made with wild mountain vegetables that we don’t usually eat—and we left feeling completely full. Because it’s a small Accommodation, it was quiet and relaxing, which we really appreciated.

    Onsen Accommodation in the Mountains

I wanted to stay here, and when I heard the rumor in early July that there might be availability, I checked and was able to make a Reservation. The location is great, the Room was spacious, and I was very satisfied. With fewer Rooms available, it allowed for a relaxing stay. The Onsen was also very pleasant, and I enjoyed it multiple times in the indoor bath. Improvement points: - Please provide amenities such as lotion, cleansing products, and hairbrushes. Highlights: 1. The bed - It was incredibly comfortable for sleeping. 2. Healthy meals - Great even for those with diabetes. 3. Morning market - The seasoned rice was delicious! Highly recommended!

A quaint small Onsen accommodation in the mountains, with room and meal improvements needed.

The unique quality of the Onsen's water was intriguing and was the main reason for our visit. However, the view from the window of the assigned room was just a neighboring house's exterior wall, which felt quite confined and not ideal for a guest room. The meals were primarily focused on mountain vegetables, but the seasoning was somewhat monotonous. Adding more variety such as simmered or vinegared dishes could enhance the experience. It seemed to be a season with fewer mountain vegetables suitable for tempura, but tempura made mostly with common vegetables was underwhelming. While marbled beef was served, it would be considerate to offer options with less oil for guests who may not prefer rich dishes. The young couple managing this accommodation provided warm and pleasant service, leaving a positive impression overall. We look forward to seeing their continued growth in hospitality!

    A Relaxing Accommodation for Adults

This was my first visit to Hijiori Onsen. Unfortunately, it rained, so I couldn't enjoy the night market or the dam illumination, but Maruya was a wonderful accommodation that made up for it. I stayed in a room called "Hayama," which was divided into two spaces: one with futons laid out for sleeping and another for relaxing. Since the number of rooms is limited overall, I could always use the baths, including private ones, at my leisure. The public bath across from the accommodation could also be used at a discounted price. For dinner, there were plenty of local mountain vegetables, and the steak was cooked by myself on a grill, allowing me to enjoy it at my own pace. Breakfast was delicious as well; I ended up eating more rice than usual. Hijiori Onsen is a tranquil onsen town that I'd love to visit again. When I do return, I'll definitely stay at Maruya again!

    Thank you for your patronage.

Freshly picked mountain vegetables and Tsuyahime rice offered a meal that truly showcased the richness of Japanese cuisine. The historic hot springs of Hijiori were exceptional, allowing me to rediscover the charm of Yamagata. Every corner of the Ryokan was impeccably maintained, reflecting the passion and heartfelt hospitality passed down through generations. Thank you for your wonderful care.

    I was very satisfied...

I was very satisfied with the opportunity to enjoy many local specialties such as imoni, mountain vegetables, natto soup, new rice, and sake. Listening to stories about how to preserve mountain vegetables and how to make imoni also became a memorable part of the trip. Additionally, I was very impressed by the retro and solid atmosphere of the dining area's table, which was made by reusing a storehouse door.

Hot spring with a 1200-year history, inn with a 160-year-old building

A lodging that retains a quaint appearance while being renovated with the latest facilities and cleanliness. The hot water contains iron, is slightly milky, and is adjusted to be a bit hot, flowing directly from the source. As expected of 1,200-year-old water, the components and temperature seep into the body, and even after getting out, the warmth lingers, and the sweat doesn't easily subside. It is said to be a famous hot spring for therapeutic baths. The meals are carefully prepared with mountain vegetables, mushrooms, and river fish harvested from the mountains, offering a deep flavor. The salt-grilled sweetfish is specially grilled by a fishmonger in the town, and being nearby, it was tender with a gentle aroma of river algae, making it delicious. The menu also includes hearty dishes like Yamagata imoni and Yamagata beef steak. Although the portions are small, they are well-balanced, and it was just the right amount for me. It was a historic hot spring inn that makes you want to visit again. Thank you for taking care of us.
