A joint birthday celebration with three generations all together—kids and grandkids—plus an overnight stay for my partner and me!

It had been a while since we last gathered—this time, all our children and grandchildren came together to celebrate my wife’s and my birthdays. We chose a long-established Ryokan located at the gateway to beautiful Nara Park, just a 2-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station—an ideal meeting point for our family coming from both the Kanto and Kansai regions. The Shosoin-inspired building we had often admired on the way to Nara Park turned out to be Kasuga Hotel. It was our first stay, and it proved to be a wonderful Accommodation that stands at the entrance to historic Nara Park. Here are a few memorable moments from our visit. With its major restoration now underway—the first in about 120 years since FY2022—Kofuku-ji Temple’s National Treasure Five-Story Pagoda will be something we look forward to enjoying again from our Room once the work is completed.

    All the staff were k...

All the staff were kind and served us sincerely. First, I was surprised by the fluent Japanese of the Nepalese female staff member who welcomed us. I think it’s wonderful how much she has studied Japanese and etiquette. Later, I mistakenly operated the coffee machine in the lounge and spilled hot coffee on my hand, also dirtying a nearby container. I apologized at the front desk, but they cleaned it up without showing any displeasure. I feel very sorry about that. The Room felt compact, but it was clean, and the Japanese-style Room had a sunken kotatsu-style setup that was convenient to use. However, since the floor level of the Japanese-style Room is about as high as a bed and there are no handrails for getting on and off, we felt it could be a bit unsafe for elderly guests like us. We only had breakfast because we had plans in the evening, but we enjoyed healthy dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. We sometimes eat tea porridge when we come to Nara so it didn’t feel particularly unusual, but it did make us feel like we were truly in Nara. The bath was also spacious and nice. Above all, being in such a great location—just a 5-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station—is very appreciated for travelers like us who rely on public transportation.

    Traditional Ryokan

Overall, we had a very comfortable stay. Above all, the location was excellent. It also felt a bit more reasonably priced compared to other areas. The meals were delicious, and the room was comfortable. The 24-hour self-serve drink bar actually had some snacks as well—I ended up having quite a lot. Thank you very much. This is now one of the Ryokan I’d love to visit again!

    Even better than expected.

The Room had tatami flooring. It was very spacious and warm, making for a comfortable stay. The service was just right, and it was very relaxing. We only had breakfast, and it was delicious.

    A clean and well-maintained Hotel

We stayed here for Nara’s Omizutori festival. Check-in was at 3:00 PM, but we wanted to walk around Naramachi, so we were able to park our car around noon. The location next to Kofuku-ji Temple was very convenient for getting to Naramachi as well. The front desk staff told us about the best time to go and what it would be like at Omizutori, and before we left they kindly advised us, “It gets bitterly cold while you’re waiting, so it’s a good idea to bring hand warmers.” Thanks to their thoughtful service, we stayed warm. We really appreciated the care. Breakfast included chagayu (tea rice porridge), and the gentle Japanese-style meal was easy on the stomach—my spouse was happy with it too. The staff were also efficient with serving and explanations, which made us feel comfortable. We’d like to visit again on our final day next time—this is an Accommodation that made us want to come back. Thank you very much!

The Finest Hospitality at a Long-Established Ryokan

What I liked - Above all, the hospitality was outstanding. The staff were attentive to every detail, and I had a very comfortable two-day stay. There were several international guests, and it seemed that all staff could assist in English—adding humor as well—which even made me feel proud. - Next, the baths. Since it’s not an Onsen, I didn’t expect much, but both the large public bath and the bath in the Room were excellent. In particular, I was able to relax in the open-air bath while enjoying the sound of the stream. The bathing area, changing room, and wash area were all kept impeccably clean. The Room bath also had a large tub where I could fully stretch out, and the warm feel of wood against the skin was very pleasant. - The meals. The dishes used plenty of local ingredients and felt wholesome, with more than enough volume. However, on the second night we asked to switch to shabu-shabu as the main dish—and it was almost too luxurious. Even after skipping lunch and walking around sightseeing spots to build up an appetite, I still couldn’t finish everything and ended up leaving quite a bit of food (though it was delicious). Younger guests may be fine, but older guests may want to plan accordingly in advance. What could be improved I truly think this is a wonderful Ryokan; however, I’ll mention a couple of points that stood out in hopes they can be improved even further. - Amenities (toothbrush): Compared with the overall high quality of this Ryokan, it felt a bit underwhelming. - Room air conditioner: At bedtime, when it switched into operation mode (or cycled), the sound was fairly loud and slightly bothersome—perhaps it’s nearing the end of its lifespan?

A satisfying first stay in Nara.

I stayed at Kasuga Hotel during my first trip to Nara. The location is excellent, just a short walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, making it easy to visit tourist attractions. Best of all, you can see Kofukuji Temple from the room! The room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable. Despite being in the city center, the outdoor bath offered a great view and was as clean and pleasant as the room itself. The meals were special New Year’s dishes, each carefully prepared with great taste, presentation, and portion size—absolutely satisfying. The hotel staff were attentive and polite, making my stay very enjoyable. It was such a wonderful accommodation that I’d love to stay here again on my next visit to Nara. Thank you!

    Wonderful Hotel

I chose this hotel because it was close to the station without high expectations, but the staff were lovely, the cleaning was thorough, and it exceeded my expectations. I had a relaxing stay and would love to come back if staying in Nara again.

For several years now, I have been taking my elderly mother on a one-night trip within driving distance as a birthday gift. Due to her chronic health conditions, we prioritize location and the bath facilities for a relaxing stay, without expecting much more. However, we were pleasantly surprised to experience the traditional Japanese hospitality that is often missing in international hotels these days, and we returned home completely satisfied. A small but thoughtful touch was the pot filled with ice water, which has become rare recently and was very convenient. The foot massage machine, bright bathroom lighting with a chair for makeup application, and the magnifying tabletop mirror were all senior-friendly features. The Room was clean and comfortable as well. The staff were all kind and attentive; they even extended birthday wishes to my mother, which made her very happy. We only had breakfast during our stay, but it included tea porridge, handmade tofu, and other delicious dishes that we thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience!

There is a 24-hour drink bar and snack service on the first floor, which was excellent. Although it seems to be an older Hotel, there is no excessive service like attendants constantly assisting you; instead, there are convenient self-service options throughout. The Room I stayed in even had a massage chair, which was fantastic.

    Very nice Hotel.

Located just a 1-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station and Kofuku-ji Temple, this property offers exceptional convenience. The staff are genuinely kind and attentive. The bath facilities are spacious relative to the number of guest rooms, providing a truly relaxing experience. You won’t need to wait for your turn in the shower, which is especially helpful during the hot summer months. Meals were delicious, featuring traditional Japanese set menus—highly recommended for those who enjoy this style of breakfast over bread and coffee. If I visit Nara again, I would definitely stay here!

    Exceptional hospitality in every detail

The bath is not an Onsen, but it includes an indoor bath, waterfall shower, open-air bath, and a garden designed to enhance the ambiance. The Room is well-prepared with details such as ice water and toothpicks. There is also a foot massager available, carefully selected lighting, and the front desk and lobby are exceptional.

    Accommodation with exceptional hospitality

The meals were delicious, and despite being a Saturday, the large public bath was not crowded, allowing us to enjoy it almost privately. Above all, the staff were warm and welcoming, making our stay incredibly comfortable. The location is also excellent.

    Conveniently located near Nara Station.

The location is excellent, with Kintetsu Nara Station nearby and Nara Park within walking distance. The large public bath is also a great feature. I stayed in a room with a bed, but since the window only had shoji screens, it became bright early in the morning and woke me up. It would be better if curtains or something to block outside light were provided. However, I would still like to stay here again.

A 2-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, offering an excellent location. While it may not be a brand-new facility, the cleanliness is impeccable. Unlike some other hotels or ryokans where even clean-looking rooms might have lingering toilet odors, this hotel was praised by even the most sensitive guests for being odor-free. With a limited number of rooms, the bath area is spacious and comfortable. We chose a No Meals Included Plan but added breakfast for one day—it was hearty and delicious. We stayed for three nights and used this as our base to explore various destinations. Whether renting a car or using trains and buses, it was extremely convenient.

Just steps from Kintetsu Nara Station

I stayed here for my first visit to Nara. The accommodation is very close to the station, which was a pleasant surprise. The service and meals were excellent, and the warm local dialect was comforting—thank you. The room was a stepped Japanese-style room with a sunken kotatsu, but personally, I would have preferred having a sofa. If I have another opportunity, I would like to stay at Kasuga Hotel again.

    まぁちゃん!

I used this place to celebrate my mother's birthday.

I reserved a room with an open-air bath for my mother, who has difficulty walking, but we decided against using it due to the cold weather with sleet, considering her health. However, she was very happy to be able to use the large public bath both at night and in the morning, which we thought might not be possible. The room was spacious enough for her wheelchair to move easily between the sink, toilet, bed, and other areas, which was a great help. The meals were all incredibly delicious, and thanks to the staff's attentive care that allowed my shy mother to relax without worry, she even enjoyed a birthday cake as an extra treat. We truly made wonderful memories. Thank you very much!

    Hotel Kasuga Again

A few years ago, I had a very good impression when I stayed for the first time, so I chose it again. The warm atmosphere created by the staff, their courteous, sincere, and friendly service. It didn't feel formal, but rather something that naturally emanated, which was very moving. The room was also perfect for relaxing, and I felt reluctant to leave after just one night. The food was rich in local flavor, and I was able to enjoy it both visually and with my taste buds. It was very delicious. I think I would like to stay again when I come to Nara.

    Above all, excellent location.

Stayed for two days and one night. The location was excellent, just a short distance from Kintetsu Nara Station and major tourist attractions like Nara Park. The hotel offers great access to everywhere, making it easy to sightsee. The meals were delicious and seemed to be prepared with care. Although the building itself is old, the rooms were renovated in 2023 and were very clean. The Onsen also has an open-air bath, providing a pleasant experience.

    A relaxing accommodation.

Many Hotels these days have sealed windows, but here you can open them. Beyond the window is Kofuku-ji Temple, and I woke up to the sound of birds singing in the morning. Breakfast had a gentle flavor, and everything was delicious. Choosing a spacious Room was absolutely the right decision—I was able to relax very comfortably. I visit Nara often and used to stay at foreign-owned Hotels, but from now on I would like to stay at Kasuga Hotel.
